CHAPTER 10 — THE WAR INSIDE SAINT CLAIRE

CHAPTER 10 — THE WAR INSIDE SAINT CLAIRE

Emily stared at the photograph.

Her fingers refused to move.

Her mind refused to understand.

Her mother.

Clara Saint Claire.

The woman she had buried decades ago.

The woman whose voice existed only in old recordings.

The woman whose perfume she remembered from childhood but whose face had slowly faded from memory.

Alive.

“No.”

This time, the word came with anger.

Not confusion.

Not disbelief.

Anger.

Because death was painful.

But false death was something else.

It was a lie that stole years.

Raymond looked away.

That was all Emily needed to see.

“You knew.”

His silence answered.

“You knew.”

“Emily
”

“How long?”

Raymond’s voice was barely audible.

“Since the beginning.”

The room became silent.

Alexander stood in the corner, watching.

Not with satisfaction.

With sadness.

Because he understood that feeling.

The feeling of discovering everyone you loved had been hiding the truth.

“You knew my mother was alive.”

Raymond closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe she was dead.”

“Yes.”

Emily stepped back.

“Why?”

The question was not loud.

That made it worse.

Why.

The simplest question.

The hardest answer.

“Because she asked me to.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Raymond looked at the photograph.

“Your mother made a choice.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“My mother would never abandon me.”

“She didn’t.”

A pause.

“She protected you.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

Raymond looked at her.

“Because it is true.”

Alexander suddenly spoke.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

His expression was cold.

“But that is not the whole truth.”

Raymond’s face changed.

“Alexander.”

“You owe her the truth.”

A pause.

“After everything you took from us.”

Emily looked between them.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander stepped forward.

“The truth is not that Clara disappeared.”

A pause.

“The truth is that she chose who would disappear with her.”

The words hit like a weapon.

Emily stared.

“Explain.”

Alexander looked at Raymond.

Then at her.

“Your mother discovered something bigger than Adrian’s investigation.”

Thirty years ago, Adrian Saint Claire discovered corruption.

But Clara discovered something worse.

A system.

A secret organization hidden inside the medical industry.

A group of people who did not just manipulate research.

They controlled entire companies.

Hospitals.

Political connections.

They decided which treatments survived.

Which disappeared.

Which people became powerful.

And which people vanished.

“Your father wanted to expose them.”

Alexander continued.

“But your mother realized something.”

“What?”

“She realized exposing them would not destroy them.”

A pause.

“It would only make them hide.”

Emily listened.

“And?”

Alexander looked at her.

“So she created a plan.”

A plan that required sacrifice.

Adrian would disappear.

Clara would disappear.

Alexander would disappear.

Even Emily’s identity would be hidden.

The Saint Claire family would appear weaker.

Broken.

Defeated.

While secretly preparing for the right moment.

Emily looked at Raymond.

“You agreed to this?”

Raymond nodded.

“I hated it.”

A pause.

“But yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me when I was older?”

Raymond looked at her.

“Because you were happy.”

Emily almost smiled.

“Happy?”

A tear appeared.

“I spent years believing everyone I loved was gone.”

Raymond looked devastated.

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t.”

The pain was not only about the secret.

It was about every birthday.

Every achievement.

Every moment she wished her mother was there.

Someone had chosen for her.

Again.

Meanwhile, across the city, Preston discovered his own family was collapsing.

His father Edward had disappeared.

The investigation had reached him.

But before authorities could question him, Edward left one message.

For Preston.

I protected this family the only way I knew how.

Preston read it again.

Then destroyed the paper.

Because he finally understood.

His entire life was built on excuses.

Vanessa found him later.

She looked different.

Scared.

“You need to leave.”

Preston looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because they are coming.”

“Who?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“The people behind everything.”

Preston laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Vanessa placed a folder on the table.

“You should.”

He opened it.

Inside were records.

Payments.

Names.

Connections.

And one name repeated everywhere.

THE ORCHID GROUP.

Preston looked up.

“What is this?”

“The people who funded your father.”

A pause.

“The people who gave me instructions.”

His expression changed.

“You worked for them?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

The revelation destroyed the last illusion.

Vanessa had not been a random affair.

She had been placed into his life.

Manipulated.

Used.

Just like him.

“Why?”

Preston asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you were close to Emily.”

A pause.

“They needed someone near the Saint Claire heir.”

For the first time, Preston understood.

His affair.

His marriage.

The custody battle.

The scandal.

Everything.

Not a series of accidents.

A plan.

At the hidden Saint Claire facility, Emily finally met her mother.

Not through a photograph.

Not through a letter.

Through a door.

A door that opened slowly.

And behind it

was Clara Saint Claire.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Emily could not move.

Clara could not either.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of waiting.

Then one moment.

“Emily.”

Her voice broke.

Because she had imagined this moment thousands of times.

But never enough.

Emily stared.

“You’re alive.”

Clara nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words.

They should have fixed everything.

They didn’t.

Emily stepped back.

“Sorry?”

Clara lowered her head.

“I know.”

“You missed everything.”

“Yes.”

“You missed my childhood.”

“Yes.”

“You missed my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“You missed knowing your own daughter.”

Clara cried silently.

“Yes.”

The anger finally broke through.

“Why?”

Clara looked at her.

“Because if they knew you mattered to me
”

Her voice trembled.

“They would have used you.”

Emily wiped her tears.

“They used me anyway.”

Silence.

Because Clara had no answer.

Then Emily asked the question that mattered most.

“Did my father know?”

Clara looked away.

And that hesitation was enough.

Emily’s heart sank.

“Mom.”

Clara whispered:

“Your father is alive.”

The room froze.

Again.

Another impossible truth.

Emily closed her eyes.

“How many more secrets?”

Clara looked at her daughter.

“One more.”

“What?”

Clara reached for a file.

A file marked:

SAINT CLAIRE FINAL INHERITANCE.

She placed it in Emily’s hands.

Inside was a document.

The final page contained a sentence.

A sentence written by Adrian Saint Claire.

THE TRUE HEIR OF SAINT CLAIRE IS NOT EMILY.

Emily stared.

Her entire body went cold.

Below the sentence was another name.

ALEXANDER SAINT CLAIRE.

Emily looked up.

Her brother.

The lost heir.

The child who was forgotten.

Alexander looked away.

Because this was the truth he had carried his entire life.

He was not the backup.

He was not the replacement.

He was the original choice.

Then the alarms started.

Everyone froze.

Raymond moved instantly.

“What happened?”

A security officer appeared.

“Someone breached the facility.”

“How many?”

The officer looked terrified.

“All of them.”

Clara’s expression changed.

“They found us.”

Emily looked around.

Her family.

Her mother.

Her brother.

Her uncle.

The people she spent her life believing were gone.

Now they were all together.

And someone wanted to destroy them.

Outside the facility, dozens of vehicles stopped.

A man stepped out.

He looked at the building.

Then smiled.

“Thirty years.”

He whispered.

“Finally.”

Inside, Emily held the inheritance document.

The war was no longer about her marriage.

No longer about Preston.

No longer about the Whitmore family.

This was bigger.

Older.

More dangerous.

The man outside looked at the building.

His name was unknown to Emily.

But everyone else knew.

Because he was the person who started everything.

The person who destroyed Adrian Saint Claire.

The person who erased Clara Saint Claire.

The person who created the lost heir.

He looked at the entrance.

And said:

May you like

“Bring me my daughter.”
