CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST MOVE OF VANESSA CROSS

CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST MOVE OF VANESSA CROSS

Vanessa Cross had spent her entire life learning one rule.

Never stand on the losing side.

She grew up watching powerful people destroy those beneath them.

She watched wealthy families rewrite the truth.

She watched innocent people disappear while the guilty ones smiled at charity events.

So Vanessa made a decision early.

She would never be powerless.

Never again.

But power was a strange thing.

The harder she chased it

the more she became a tool for people who already had it.

The first time Victor Laurent approached her, she thought she had won.

He knew her ambition.

He knew her weaknesses.

He knew exactly what she wanted.

A place among the elite.

A name people respected.

A life where nobody looked down on her.

And he offered it.

All she had to do was one thing.

Enter Preston Whitmore’s life.

At the beginning, Vanessa believed she was controlling the game.

She convinced herself she was smarter than everyone.

Smarter than Preston.

Smarter than the Whitmore family.

Smarter than Emily.

But she learned too late.

A person who designs the game never loses.

Only the players do.

Now Vanessa sat alone in a small apartment she barely recognized.

No designer clothes.

No expensive jewelry.

No security.

No invitations.

Everything she thought made her important had disappeared.

Her phone remained silent.

For the first time in years

nobody needed her.

Then the message arrived.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

YOU STILL HAVE ONE USEFUL MOVE LEFT.

Vanessa stared at it.

She should have ignored it.

She should have destroyed the phone.

She should have walked away.

But Vanessa had survived by making one mistake over and over.

She always believed she could outsmart danger.

The second message arrived.

MEET ME IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR FAMILY DIED.

Her expression changed.

Because there was one thing Vanessa never talked about.

Her past.

Everyone thought Vanessa Cross was just an ambitious woman chasing wealth.

Nobody knew where she came from.

Nobody knew why she hated being poor.

Nobody knew why she feared losing everything.

Nobody knew why she would do anything to belong.

Three hours later, Vanessa arrived at an abandoned building.

She expected Victor.

Instead, she found someone else.

A woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold.

Vanessa stopped.

“You.”

The woman smiled.

“You remember me.”

Vanessa’s hands tightened.

Because she did.

Margaret Whitmore.

Preston’s mother.

The woman who had always looked at her like she was beneath the family.

“You were working with them.”

Margaret did not deny it.

“Yes.”

Vanessa laughed.

“So everyone was lying.”

A pause.

“Everyone.”

Margaret walked closer.

“You want revenge.”

Vanessa looked away.

“No.”

A lie.

Margaret smiled.

“You want answers.”

That was worse.

Because it was true.

“Why did you choose me?”

Margaret looked at her.

“I didn’t.”

A pause.

“Victor did.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“He saw something in you.”

“What?”

“Someone willing to become cruel to survive.”

The words hurt.

Because Vanessa hated that they were true.

“Your job was never to destroy Emily.”

Margaret continued.

“You were never important enough for that.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“What?”

“You were a distraction.”

Every memory returned.

The affair.

The hospital scene.

The public humiliation.

The custody battle.

All of it.

A distraction.

“While everyone watched you and Preston
”

Margaret said quietly.

“Victor moved closer to the Saint Claire secrets.”

Vanessa felt something break.

Because she finally understood.

She had spent years trying to prove she belonged among powerful people.

And powerful people had spent years proving she never did.

“What do you want from me?”

Margaret placed a small device on the table.

“Information.”

Vanessa looked at it.

“About what?”

“Victor.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You think I can defeat Victor Laurent?”

“No.”

Margaret looked at her.

“But Emily can.”

Meanwhile, Emily continued preparing for the final confrontation.

The Saint Claire team had located several hidden Orchid Group facilities.

But Victor was always one step ahead.

Every location was empty.

Every file was incomplete.

Every lead disappeared.

Daniel entered the office.

“We have a problem.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

“Someone accessed the Saint Claire security system.”

Raymond immediately became alert.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa Cross.”

The room became silent.

Emily leaned back.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Raymond frowned.

“Impossible.”

“No.”

Emily looked at the screen.

“Not impossible.”

A pause.

“Expected.”

Everyone looked at her.

Emily continued:

“Victor always uses people after breaking them.”

She looked at the access records.

“He doesn’t throw away tools.”

A few hours later, Vanessa appeared at the Saint Claire residence.

Security surrounded her immediately.

She raised her hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

Raymond looked suspicious.

“Then why are you here?”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“Because I know who killed your father.”

The room froze.

Emily stepped forward.

“Explain.”

Vanessa looked exhausted.

Not arrogant.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“I was never Victor’s partner.”

A pause.

“I was his weapon.”

Emily studied her.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked down.

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer surprised Emily.

“I lied.”

Vanessa continued.

“I manipulated Preston.”

A pause.

“I hurt you.”

Her voice became quieter.

“I hurt your baby.”

The room became still.

Emily looked at her.

For a moment, Vanessa expected hatred.

Instead, she saw something worse.

Disappointment.

“I can’t forgive you.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“But I need the truth.”

Vanessa looked up.

“That’s why I came.”

She placed a file on the table.

Inside were documents.

Victor’s plans.

Financial networks.

Names.

And one final piece.

“The person who helped Victor enter the Saint Claire system
”

Vanessa looked at Raymond.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Raymond’s face changed.

“No.”

Vanessa whispered:

“It was someone inside your family.”

Emily looked at Raymond.

Again.

The same name.

The same fear.

“Who?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer

The lights went out.

Everyone moved.

Security alarms.

Emergency systems.

Footsteps.

Someone had entered.

When the lights returned

Vanessa was gone.

Only one thing remained on the table.

A message written on paper.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

STOP LOOKING FOR THE PAST.

THE PAST IS LOOKING FOR YOU.

Emily picked it up.

She recognized the handwriting.

Her heart stopped.

Because it belonged to one person.

Someone who should never have been able to write anything.

Clara Saint Claire.

Everyone froze.

“No.”

Raymond whispered.

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

Raymond’s face was pale.

“Clara never wrote that.”

Emily stared.

“Then who did?”

A security officer rushed inside.

“Miss Saint Claire.”

“What happened?”

The officer looked terrified.

“We found Vanessa.”

A pause.

“She’s unconscious.”

Everyone turned.

“Where?”

The officer swallowed.

“In the old Saint Claire family cemetery.”

Emily felt cold.

Because that cemetery held only one important grave.

Her mother’s grave.

The group rushed there.

The grave was untouched.

The stone still carried the name:

CLARA SAINT CLAIRE

But beside it

was a second name.

Freshly carved.

A name Emily had never seen before.

ADRIAN SAINT CLAIRE

Emily stared.

Her father.

A man who was supposed to be alive.

A man whose grave should not exist.

Then Vanessa slowly opened her eyes.

She looked at Emily.

Her voice was weak.

“He wanted you to find this.”

Emily knelt beside her.

“Who?”

Vanessa looked at the grave.

“The man who controls everything.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“Victor?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“The man Victor answers to.”

The world went silent.

Because everyone believed Victor Laurent was the final enemy.

The person at the top.

The beginning.

The end.

But Vanessa’s next words changed everything.

“Victor was never the king.”

She whispered.

“He was only the servant.”

Emily looked at the grave.

At the hidden name.

At the secrets that kept multiplying.

And she understood.

The war was not ending.

It was revealing itself.

Somewhere far away, Victor Laurent watched a screen.

He saw Vanessa disappear.

He saw Emily find the grave.

And for the first time

he looked afraid.

Because someone else had made a move.

Someone even he could not control.

The screen showed one name.

A name hidden for thirty years.

A name erased from every record.

A name that belonged to the first person who started the entire war.

ADRIAN SAINT CLAIRE.

Victor whispered:

May you like

“He came back.”
