CHAPTER 7 — THE SECRET OF EMILY’S MOTHER

CHAPTER 7 — THE SECRET OF EMILY’S MOTHER

Emily had spent her entire life believing she understood her mother.

A woman who loved quietly.

A woman who sacrificed everything.

A woman who smiled even when life gave her every reason not to.

Clara Saint Claire had never been the kind of person who demanded attention.

She did not attend every charity event.

She did not appear on magazine covers.

She did not care about being known.

She cared about people.

That was what everyone said.

But now Emily wondered if that was only part of the truth.

Because people who carried dangerous secrets often looked the most peaceful.

The morning after the mysterious phone call, Emily sat in Raymond’s office.

The same office where she had learned about her father.

The same office where she had learned her life was built on hidden truths.

Raymond stood by the window.

He had not slept.

She could tell.

“You know who called me.”

It was not a question.

Raymond remained silent.

That was enough.

Emily looked away.

“Why does everyone keep deciding what I can handle?”

Raymond closed his eyes.

“Because we love you.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“Because you are afraid of losing me.”

The words hurt because they were true.

Raymond had spent years protecting Emily.

But protection had become a wall.

And walls could keep enemies out.

They could also keep loved ones trapped inside.

“Tell me about my mother.”

Raymond turned.

“I already have.”

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“You told me the version that made me sleep at night.”

Silence.

“I want the version that kept you awake.”

Raymond sat down.

For the first time, he looked older.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man carrying regret.

“Your mother was the strongest person I ever knew.”

Emily smiled sadly.

“I know.”

“No.”

Raymond shook his head.

“You don’t.”

A pause.

“Because you never saw what she did when people tried to destroy her.”

Clara Saint Claire was not born into power.

She married into it.

But unlike many people who entered wealthy families, she never cared about status.

She cared about consequences.

When Adrian discovered corruption inside the medical industry, Clara was the first person who believed him.

Not because he had proof.

Because she knew him.

She knew he would never accuse someone without reason.

“She helped him investigate.”

Emily listened carefully.

“She collected information.”

“What kind?”

“Financial records. Research documents. Internal reports.”

Raymond looked at the old files.

“Everything they tried to hide.”

Emily felt a chill.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew someone wanted to hurt my father.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she leave?”

Raymond looked down.

“Because Adrian refused to run.”

That sounded exactly like the man Emily barely remembered.

Someone who believed doing the right thing mattered more than being safe.

A beautiful belief.

A dangerous one.

“She should have taken me and disappeared.”

Raymond’s expression changed.

“She tried.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Raymond opened a drawer.

He removed an envelope.

“This was found after the accident.”

Emily took it.

Her hands trembled.

Inside was a letter.

From Clara.

Another letter.

Another truth waiting to hurt her.

Raymond,

If you are reading this, then Adrian was right. They are watching us.

Emily stopped.

Her breathing became shallow.

She continued.

I know you will want to protect Emily. I know you will want to hide everything from her.

A pause.

But promise me one thing. Do not let protection become another prison.

Emily closed her eyes.

Because her mother had understood something before everyone else.

The difference between protecting someone

and controlling their life.

The letter continued.

Emily must know the truth one day. She must know that her father did not die because he failed.

He died because he succeeded in finding something people wanted buried.

Emily looked up.

“What did he find?”

Raymond hesitated.

Then answered:

“A list.”

“A list of what?”

“The people who controlled the medical network.”

The names were not random.

Doctors.

Executives.

Investors.

Government officials.

People who could destroy anyone who exposed them.

But Adrian had found something worse.

A connection.

“He discovered that the corruption was connected to the Whitmore family.”

Emily froze.

“Preston’s family?”

Raymond nodded.

“Not everyone.”

A pause.

“But someone.”

At that exact moment, Preston sat across from his mother.

Margaret Whitmore looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not yet.

But tired.

“How long did you know?”

Margaret did not answer.

Preston laughed.

“You knew Emily was the heir.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was connected to Saint Claire.”

“Yes.”

“You knew everything.”

Margaret looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I knew enough.”

Preston stood.

“You used my marriage.”

Margaret looked away.

“I protected this family.”

“You destroyed it.”

The words surprised both of them.

Because Preston had never spoken to his mother that way.

Not once.

Margaret opened the hidden file.

The one she had kept for decades.

“You want to know why I helped you?”

Preston stared.

“Yes.”

She pushed the file toward him.

“Because Emily is not the only person who lost something.”

Inside were old photographs.

Adrian.

Clara.

Raymond.

And Margaret.

Young.

Together.

Friends.

Not enemies.

Preston looked confused.

“You knew them?”

Margaret nodded.

“Before your father.”

The truth was more complicated than anyone knew.

Before the Whitmores became rivals.

Before the Saint Claires became powerful.

There had been friendship.

Trust.

Shared dreams.

Until ambition destroyed everything.

“Your grandfather worked with Adrian.”

Margaret’s voice became quiet.

“They wanted to create a better medical system.”

“What happened?”

“Money happened.”

She looked at the photograph.

“Power happened.”

Preston looked at the last picture.

A picture of Clara holding baby Emily.

On the back was a handwritten note.

She will finish what we started.

His face changed.

“Finish what?”

Margaret closed the file.

“That is the question everyone is afraid she will answer.”

Back at the Saint Claire residence, Emily finally saw her father’s investigation files.

Thousands of pages.

Years of work.

At the center was one document.

The list.

She scanned the names.

Some were familiar.

Some were not.

Then she saw one name.

Her heart stopped.

Because she knew it.

Everyone knew it.

EDWARD WHITMORE.

Preston’s father.

Emily stepped back.

“No.”

Raymond watched her carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“But you let me marry into that family?”

Raymond’s silence hurt more than any answer.

“You thought I would hate Preston.”

Raymond nodded.

“And?”

Emily looked at the file.

“I don’t know.”

Because Preston was not innocent.

But maybe he was not the mastermind.

Maybe he was just another person raised inside a machine.

Then Daniel rushed into the room.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“What?”

He held a document.

“We found something.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at Raymond.

Then at Emily.

“The person who leaked your identity to the media
”

A pause.

“It came from inside Saint Claire.”

The room froze.

Emily slowly looked around.

The people she trusted.

The people who protected her.

The people who claimed to love her.

One of them had betrayed her.

That night, Emily stood alone outside the hospital.

The place where everything started.

The place where she was humiliated.

The place where the world learned her name.

She touched the glass wall.

The letters reflected in front of her.

WHITMORE–SAINT CLAIRE MEDICAL CENTER.

Two families.

Two legacies.

One hidden war.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, Emily answered immediately.

“Who are you?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

A man’s voice.

Not old.

Not familiar.

“You are searching for the person who killed your father.”

Emily froze.

“Who are you?”

The man laughed softly.

“I’m the person your mother spent thirty years trying to hide.”

The call ended.

Emily stood motionless.

Because for the first time

she realized something terrifying.

Her mother’s secret was not only about the past.

It was alive.

May you like

And it had just found her.
