CHAPTER 3 — THE HUSBAND WHO SOLD HIS SOUL

CHAPTER 3 — THE HUSBAND WHO SOLD HIS SOUL

The first thing Emily noticed when she returned home was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the silence of a house where someone was resting.

The silence of a place where a battle had already begun.

The Whitmore estate had always been beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Tall windows.

Polished marble floors.

Expensive paintings chosen by people who wanted visitors to know they had money.

Everything looked perfect.

But Emily had learned something over the past few months.

Perfect things often hid the most damage.

The front door opened.

The house manager looked surprised.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Emily nodded.

“Where is Preston?”

The woman hesitated.

That hesitation told Emily everything.

“His office.”

Of course.

Preston always went to his office when something went wrong.

A room where he could close the door and pretend he still controlled the situation.

Emily walked upstairs slowly.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was tired.

The baby was heavier now.

Her body was carrying a life.

But her mind was carrying years of disappointment.

She stopped outside the office door.

She could hear voices.

Preston.

And Vanessa.

Emily did not open the door.

She listened.

Not because she wanted to spy.

Because she needed to know exactly what kind of people she had married into.

“You said your uncle wouldn’t interfere.”

Vanessa’s voice was angry.

Preston sounded frustrated.

“I didn’t know he would show up.”

“You told me this hospital was basically yours.”

“It is.”

A pause.

“No. It was.”

The silence afterward was revealing.

Emily closed her eyes.

So that was the truth.

Preston had not only lied to her.

He had lied to Vanessa too.

Vanessa continued.

“You made me look stupid.”

Preston snapped.

“Do you think I wanted that?”

“I trusted you.”

Emily almost smiled.

Trusted him.

The irony.

The two people who betrayed her were now upset because they could not trust each other.

Emily opened the door.

Both of them stopped.

Preston’s face changed.

“Emily.”

Vanessa immediately became defensive.

“You were listening?”

Emily looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“I was arriving.”

The answer was simple.

But it made Vanessa uncomfortable.

Because Emily was no longer reacting the way she expected.

Preston stood.

“We need to talk.”

Emily looked around.

The room.

The woman.

The husband.

The life she thought she had.

“Do we?”

Preston frowned.

“Yes.”

“About what?”

“About what happened today.”

Emily nodded.

“Okay.”

She sat down.

Calmly.

And that scared Preston more than anger would have.

“I made a mistake.”

There it was.

The sentence every unfaithful person eventually used.

A mistake.

As if betrayal was an accident.

As if months of lies happened without choices.

Emily looked at him.

“A mistake?”

“Yes.”

“With her?”

Preston looked away.

Emily noticed.

“You can’t even look at me.”

“That’s not fair.”

She almost laughed.

“Fair?”

Her voice remained quiet.

“You stood there while another woman attacked your pregnant wife.”

Preston’s jaw tightened.

“She didn’t mean to hurt you.”

The room became still.

Emily stared at him.

And there it was.

The final piece.

Not the affair.

Not the lies.

Not Vanessa.

This.

The defense.

“Say that again.”

Preston realized too late what he had said.

“Emily—”

“No.”

She stood.

“Say it.”

He was silent.

Emily nodded.

“I understand.”

“You understand what?”

“That you are not sorry.”

A pause.

“You are sorry you got caught.”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Because even she knew Emily was right.

Preston stepped forward.

“You’re being emotional.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

Her hand rested over her stomach.

“I’m being clear.”

For years, Emily had been the wife who compromised.

The wife who understood.

The wife who forgave.

When Preston worked late, she understood.

When his family criticized her, she stayed quiet.

When he missed anniversaries, she made excuses.

She thought love meant patience.

She thought marriage meant protecting someone even when they failed you.

But she finally understood something.

Love without respect was just a slower form of abandonment.

“Vanessa.”

Both Preston and Vanessa looked surprised.

Emily turned toward her.

“You should leave.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“You don’t own this house.”

Emily looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I know exactly who does.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Because she remembered Raymond.

Preston stepped between them.

“This is my home.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

The word was gentle.

But final.

“It’s the Whitmore family home.”

She looked around.

“The same family that is currently being investigated.”

Preston’s face hardened.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Emily looked genuinely confused.

“Enjoying what?”

“Watching me fall.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m watching you reveal yourself.”

That night, Emily did something Preston never expected.

She did not scream.

She did not throw his clothes outside.

She did not call reporters.

She simply went into their bedroom.

And packed a small suitcase.

Preston watched from the doorway.

“You’re leaving?”

Emily zipped the bag.

“Yes.”

“You’re my wife.”

She looked at him.

“Am I?”

The question hurt him.

Good.

Because for the first time, he felt something close to what she had felt.

“Where will you go?”

Emily looked at him.

The old Emily would have answered.

The old Emily would have reassured him.

The old Emily would have tried to make things easier.

The woman standing there now did not.

“That’s no longer your concern.”

After she left the bedroom, Preston sat alone.

Vanessa had already gone.

The house that once felt like an achievement suddenly felt empty.

His phone rang.

It was his father.

He answered immediately.

“Dad.”

The voice on the other side was furious.

“What did you do?”

Preston froze.

“What?”

“You embarrassed the Whitmore name.”

Preston closed his eyes.

“I can fix it.”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“You don’t understand what happened today.”

A pause.

“Raymond Saint Claire didn’t come because Emily was attacked.”

Preston frowned.

“What do you mean?”

His father lowered his voice.

“He came because someone touched what belongs to him.”

Preston became quiet.

“Emily?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You have no idea who your wife really is.”

The next morning, Emily woke up in a guest suite at the Saint Claire residence.

For the first time in months, she slept peacefully.

No pretending.

No pretending everything was fine.

No pretending Preston was still the man she married.

Raymond entered quietly.

“You should rest.”

Emily looked at him.

“I’m fine.”

He smiled sadly.

“That’s what strong people say when they’re exhausted.”

She looked away.

“I don’t want revenge.”

Raymond nodded.

“Good.”

A pause.

“Because revenge is for people who want to hurt others.”

He looked at her.

“What you need is justice.”

Emily looked at the city outside.

A city that had known her as Preston Whitmore’s wife.

Soon, they would know her differently.

“Uncle Raymond.”

“Yes?”

“I want the truth.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Raymond became silent.

Because he knew what she meant.

The hospital.

Her mother.

The Saint Claire legacy.

And the one secret Emily had never been told.

Meanwhile, across the city

Preston sat in his office.

His suspension letter on the desk.

His reputation damaged.

His marriage collapsing.

Then a woman entered.

Not Vanessa.

Someone older.

Someone from the Whitmore family.

His mother.

She placed a folder on the desk.

“We have a problem.”

Preston looked up.

“What?”

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

With Emily Whitmore’s name.

Preston’s face changed.

“What is this?”

His mother looked at him.

“The reason you should have never married her.”

The final page contained one sentence.

EMILY WHITMORE IS THE DESIGNATED HEIR OF THE SAINT CLAIRE MEDICAL EMPIRE.

Preston stared.

Unable to breathe.

The quiet wife he ignored.

The woman he betrayed.

The woman he thought had nothing.

Was the person who owned everything.
