CHAPTER 5 — THE SAINT CLAIRE LEGACY

CHAPTER 5 — THE SAINT CLAIRE LEGACY

Emily did not sleep that night.

The letter remained on the desk in front of her.

The words remained in her mind.

Your father did not die by accident.

For thirty years, she had lived with a simple story.

Her father was gone.

A tragedy.

An unfortunate accident.

A painful memory her family avoided because it hurt too much.

That was what everyone told her.

That was what Raymond told her.

But now, holding her mother’s handwriting in her hands, Emily realized something.

People did not avoid painful memories.

They avoided dangerous truths.

The Saint Claire archive was cold.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Every room in the building carried history.

Names.

Decisions.

Sacrifices.

Generations of people who built something larger than themselves.

Emily had always respected that.

But she had never wanted to belong to it.

She wanted a normal life.

A small house.

A loving husband.

A family.

She wanted the things money could never buy.

And she had believed she found them.

Until Preston proved otherwise.

At six in the morning, Raymond found her there.

He did not ask if she slept.

He already knew.

“You read it.”

Emily did not turn around.

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Raymond stepped inside.

“I wanted to tell you myself.”

“When?”

Her voice was quiet.

“But after I discovered it?”

Raymond stopped.

Because that was the question he deserved.

Emily turned.

Her eyes were not filled with anger.

That made it worse.

“I trusted you.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t.”

A pause.

“You protected me from the world.”

Her voice lowered.

“But you also protected the world from me.”

Raymond looked away.

Because she was right.

“My father.”

Emily held up the letter.

“What happened?”

Raymond remained silent.

Too long.

And that silence answered before he did.

“You know.”

“I know parts.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Raymond closed his eyes.

For years, he had protected Emily.

From enemies.

From politics.

From family conflicts.

But the one thing he could not protect her from forever

was the truth.

“Your father was Adrian Saint Claire.”

Emily knew the name.

But only from old photographs.

“He worked with me.”

Raymond walked toward the window.

“He was brilliant.”

A small smile appeared.

“The kind of person who could walk into a room full of people with more money and more power than him and make them listen.”

Emily looked down.

“That sounds familiar.”

Raymond smiled sadly.

“It should.”

Adrian Saint Claire was not interested in wealth.

He was interested in medicine.

Saving lives.

Creating treatments that ordinary people could afford.

But that created enemies.

Because not everyone wanted medicine to be accessible.

Some people saw healthcare as a business.

Not a responsibility.

And Adrian discovered something dangerous.

A network of people inside the medical industry was manipulating research.

Changing data.

Hiding failures.

Profiting from suffering.

“He wanted to expose them.”

Emily’s voice was soft.

Raymond nodded.

“Yes.”

“And someone stopped him.”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Emily felt a chill.

“Who?”

Raymond looked at her.

“That is the question we never answered.”

Before Emily could respond, Daniel Hart entered the archive.

His expression was serious.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“What happened?”

He held a tablet.

“The hospital situation has escalated.”

Raymond frowned.

“Explain.”

“The media has discovered the incident.”

Emily remained calm.

“That was expected.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not the assault.”

A pause.

“Your identity.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

“The news is reporting that you are Raymond Saint Claire’s chosen successor.”

Raymond’s expression darkened.

“That information was confidential.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Who leaked it?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already suspected.

Within hours, the city changed.

The woman everyone believed was an ordinary teacher’s daughter became the center of attention.

News channels repeated her name.

EMILY WHITMORE: THE SECRET HEIR OF THE SAINT CLAIRE EMPIRE.

Photos appeared.

Her wedding.

Her charity work.

Her quiet life.

Suddenly, strangers who never cared about her had opinions.

At the Whitmore estate, Preston watched the news.

He looked sick.

Vanessa sat beside him.

“You knew?”

She asked quietly.

“No.”

“You were married to her.”

Preston ignored the accusation.

The television showed Emily leaving the Saint Claire headquarters.

Calm.

Elegant.

Surrounded by security.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“She made us look like fools.”

Preston stared.

“No.”

“What?”

He looked at the screen.

“She made herself look small.”

A pause.

“And we believed it.”

That was the part that hurt him.

Not losing power.

Not losing status.

The realization that Emily had never needed him.

She chose him.

And he treated that choice like weakness.

Later that afternoon, Preston’s father arrived.

Edward Whitmore.

The head of the Whitmore family.

He entered the house without greeting anyone.

“Where is Emily?”

Preston looked at him.

“She’s gone.”

Edward’s face hardened.

“You let her leave?”

Preston laughed bitterly.

“You knew.”

Edward said nothing.

That was enough.

Preston stood.

“You knew who she was.”

Edward looked away.

“We knew the Saint Claire connection.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you would have married her for the wrong reason.”

Preston froze.

The words hurt because they were true.

Edward continued.

“We needed access.”

The room became silent.

Preston looked at his father.

“What?”

Edward did not deny it.

“The Whitmore family has been losing influence for years.”

A pause.

“Your marriage gave us a connection.”

Preston felt disgust.

“You used me.”

Edward looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“We all made sacrifices.”

For the first time, Preston saw his own family clearly.

He had spent years judging Emily for being naive.

But his entire life had been built on manipulation.

At the Saint Claire residence, Emily met the board members.

People who had known her since childhood.

People who had waited for this day.

One elderly board member stood.

“Miss Saint Claire.”

Emily corrected him.

“Emily.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

He looked around the room.

“Your father would have been proud.”

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“I am not my father.”

“No.”

The man nodded.

“You are not.”

A pause.

“That is why Raymond chose you.”

The meeting began.

Reports.

Financial statements.

Future plans.

Emily listened.

She asked questions.

Difficult questions.

Questions nobody expected from someone who had spent years away from the empire.

By the end of the meeting, the room was silent.

Because they understood.

Raymond had not chosen Emily because she was family.

He chose her because she had something rare.

Power without arrogance.

That evening, Emily returned to the archive.

She opened her father’s files.

One document caught her attention.

A list of names.

Executives.

Doctors.

Investors.

People connected to Adrian’s death.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Not from her father.

From Raymond.

I found them.

Emily’s heart stopped.

Because beneath it was another sentence.

But one of them is still inside the Saint Claire family.

Emily slowly looked up.

Her entire life had been built on trust.

Her marriage collapsed because she trusted the wrong person.

Now she wondered if she had trusted the right family.

Across the city, Vanessa received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

The girl knows about Adrian.

She stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Stop her before she discovers the rest.

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

Because she finally understood.

She was not fighting Emily anymore.

She was caught in something much bigger.

Something that had been waiting for thirty years.

Emily stood alone in the archive.

Holding the past.

Carrying the future.

And for the first time

she was not afraid of what she would find.

Because the woman who once stayed silent had learned something.

Silence was not surrender.

Sometimes silence was preparation.

And now

Emily Whitmore was ready to speak.
