Chapter 1 – The Woman at the Bottom of the Stairs

Chapter 1 – The Woman at the Bottom of the Stairs

The first thing Khloe Harrington felt was cold.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Cold.

The marble beneath her cheek felt impossibly hard, like the entire world had turned into stone beneath her.

For several seconds, she didn't understand where she was.

There was only darkness.

A distant ringing sound.

Voices.

Hundreds of voices.

Then came the pain.

A wave so intense it stole every breath from her lungs.

Her hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.

"My baby..."

The words barely escaped her lips.

And that was when Harrison Cole knew.

His sister wasn't worried about herself.

She was worried about the child who had not even entered the world yet.

"Khloe."

Harrison's voice was different.

Everyone who knew Harrison Cole knew his courtroom voice.

The voice that made billionaires suddenly remember honesty.

The voice that caused witnesses to change their stories before he even finished asking questions.

Cold.

Precise.

Unforgiving.

But now...

None of that existed.

Now he was simply a brother.

A terrified older brother kneeling in blood beside the only person in the world who could still make him afraid.

"Stay with me."

His hands trembled as he pressed them against the side of her face.

"Look at me."

Khloe forced her eyes open.

There he was.

Her Harry.

The man who had protected her since their parents died.

The man who taught her how to ride a bicycle.

The man who sat beside her hospital bed when she broke her arm at fourteen.

The man who promised their father before his funeral:

"I will take care of her."

"The baby..."

Khloe's voice cracked.

Harrison immediately looked toward the paramedics rushing up the stairs.

"Do everything."

His voice turned sharp.

"Save my sister."

Then his eyes dropped toward her stomach.

"And save my niece."

Above them...

Vanessa Kensington stood frozen.

The woman who had pushed Khloe down those stairs was no longer confident.

No longer elegant.

No longer the woman who walked into restaurants wearing designer clothes and believed the world belonged to her.

She looked terrified.

Her hands shook.

Her face had lost all color.

Because she finally understood something.

She had not attacked a helpless pregnant woman.

She had attacked Harrison Cole's sister.

Richard Harrington still hadn't moved.

That was the detail Harrison noticed.

Not Vanessa.

Not the crowd.

Not the courthouse security officers running toward the scene.

Richard.

The husband.

The father of Khloe's unborn child.

The man who had watched his pregnant wife fall thirty steps...

And had remained standing.

Slowly...

Harrison stood.

Blood covered his expensive suit.

His palms were torn open.

But he didn't seem to notice.

His eyes locked onto Richard.

The courthouse became silent.

Everyone knew that look.

Everyone who worked in Pennsylvania's legal world knew Harrison Cole.

They knew he didn't scream.

He didn't threaten.

He didn't make emotional promises.

He simply collected facts.

And then he destroyed people with them.

"Richard."

The sound of his name coming from Harrison's mouth was worse than being shouted.

Richard swallowed.

"Harrison..."

"Why didn't you move?"

The question was simple.

Almost gentle.

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

"I..."

Harrison stepped closer.

"My sister was thrown down a staircase."

His voice remained calm.

"You were six feet away."

"You watched."

Richard looked around.

The witnesses.

The cameras.

The police officers.

The judges standing frozen near the courthouse entrance.

He realized something.

Everyone had seen.

"She pushed her."

Richard finally pointed toward Vanessa.

"Vanessa lost control."

Harrison looked at him.

A strange expression crossed his face.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

"You still don't understand."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"You think the problem is that she pushed my sister."

A pause.

"The problem is that you stood there."

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Khloe disappeared inside.

Harrison followed.

But before entering...

He turned back.

"Detective."

A police officer approached immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Cole?"

"Do not question Vanessa Kensington without recording everything."

The officer nodded.

"And Mr. Harrington?"

Harrison looked at Richard.

"Do not let him leave."

Richard's expression changed.

"You can't do this."

Harrison stared at him.

"Actually..."

He glanced at the courthouse behind him.

"I can."

Two Hours Earlier

Nobody knew the courthouse staircase would become the place where the Harrington empire began to collapse.

Nobody knew the woman covered in blood would become the reason one of Philadelphia's most powerful families lost everything.

Because before the attack...

Richard Harrington believed he had already won.

His divorce attorney had prepared everything.

The paperwork.

The financial documents.

The public explanation.

A perfect story.

Khloe was emotionally unstable after pregnancy complications.

Khloe was unable to accept the marriage had ended.

Khloe was obsessed with controlling Richard's life.

And Vanessa?

Vanessa was simply the woman who came after.

A fresh beginning.

A better match.

A woman who understood Richard's ambition.

Richard had even planned the announcement.

After the divorce.

After Khloe signed away her rights.

After the baby was born.

The world would see him as a man finally choosing happiness.

He never expected Harrison Cole.

That was his mistake.

Montgomery County Hospital

The emergency room doors opened.

Doctors rushed Khloe inside.

Harrison followed until security stopped him.

"Family only."

Harrison looked at the nurse.

"I am family."

The nurse hesitated.

"My sister."

Something in his voice made her step aside.

Thirty minutes later...

A doctor walked out.

Harrison immediately stood.

"How is she?"

The doctor removed his mask.

"She lost a dangerous amount of blood."

Harrison's face tightened.

"But?"

"She is stable."

A breath escaped him.

"And the baby?"

The doctor paused.

"The baby is alive."

For the first time since the courthouse steps...

Harrison closed his eyes.

Relief.

Just for one second.

"However..."

His eyes opened.

"What?"

"The fall caused trauma."

The doctor spoke carefully.

"Her pregnancy is already advanced, but we need to monitor both mother and child."

"She may go into early labor."

Harrison nodded.

"Do whatever is necessary."

Hours passed.

Harrison sat outside Khloe's room.

His suit was still stained with her blood.

His phone had not stopped ringing.

News reporters.

Partners.

Other attorneys.

Everyone wanted information.

But Harrison ignored every call.

Except one.

His investigator.

"Tell me."

A voice answered.

"We checked the courthouse cameras."

"And?"

"There is no doubt."

"Vanessa pushed her."

Harrison remained silent.

"There's more."

"What?"

A pause.

"Richard knew Vanessa was going to confront Khloe."

Harrison slowly looked up.

"Explain."

"Vanessa called him twenty minutes before the incident."

"Richard didn't stop her."

Another pause.

"He actually told her..."

The investigator hesitated.

"To make sure Khloe understood she was finished."

The hallway became very quiet.

Harrison stared at the hospital room door.

Behind it was his sister.

The woman who spent years believing she had a perfect marriage.

The woman who endured miscarriages alone.

The woman who was betrayed by the person she trusted most.

"Send me everything."

"Already doing it."

"And one more thing."

"Yes?"

"Find every account connected to Richard Harrington."

The investigator paused.

"Financial?"

"No."

"Everything."

Harrison's voice became colder.

"Every message."

"Every payment."

"Every person he thought would protect him."

The investigator understood.

This was not a divorce case anymore.

It was war.

Midnight

Khloe finally woke up.

The room was dark.

Machines beeped softly beside her.

The first thing she saw was Harrison sitting beside the bed.

Still wearing the same suit.

Still covered by the evidence of what happened.

"Harry..."

He immediately stood.

"I'm here."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"The baby?"

"She's okay."

Khloe let out a broken breath.

A daughter.

The daughter she and Richard had dreamed about.

Then she remembered.

Vanessa.

The stairs.

Richard.

Her expression changed.

"He was there."

Harrison didn't answer.

She looked at him.

"Richard was there."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"He watched."

Harrison reached for her hand.

"I know."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"I loved him."

"I know."

"I really loved him."

"I know."

Her voice broke.

"How could he hate me enough to do this?"

Harrison looked at his sister.

And for the first time in years...

He allowed his anger to show.

"He didn't hate you."

Khloe opened her eyes.

"Then why?"

Harrison leaned closer.

"Because people like Richard don't destroy what they hate."

A pause.

"They destroy what they think they own."

Khloe was silent.

Then she whispered:

"Harry..."

"What?"

"Don't ruin your life because of me."

Harrison looked at her.

A small, terrifying smile appeared.

"Khloe."

"Yes?"

"You know what everyone says about me?"

She swallowed.

"That you're the most dangerous attorney in Pennsylvania."

He nodded.

"They're wrong."

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward the courthouse photo on the television screen.

Toward Richard.

Toward Vanessa.

Toward the two people who had nearly killed his sister.

"They're about to find out."

Outside the hospital...

Richard Harrington watched reporters gather.

His lawyers told him everything would be manageable.

A public relations issue.

A temporary scandal.

Nothing more.

But Richard didn't know what Harrison Cole had already begun.

He didn't know his accounts were being investigated.

He didn't know every lie he had ever told was about to become evidence.

And most importantly...

He didn't know that the woman he tried to erase had just awakened the one person in Pennsylvania who could destroy him.

The next morning...

Every major news channel reported the same headline:

"Pregnant Wife Attacked Outside Courthouse — Husband's Mistress Accused."

But beneath the headline was another name.

The name that made executives, politicians, and billionaires nervous.

HARRISON COLE TAKES THE CASE.

And everyone knew one thing:

When Harrison Cole entered a courtroom...

May you like

Someone always lost.
