Chapter 3 – The Divorce Trap

Chapter 3 – The Divorce Trap
Richard Harrington had always believed there were two kinds of people in the world.
Those who controlled the game.
And those who didn't know they were playing.
For six years, he had convinced himself that he belonged to the first group.
He built skyscrapers.
He controlled investments.
He negotiated with politicians and billionaires.
People shook his hand and called him visionary.
But Richard had made one mistake.
He believed his marriage was just another business deal.
And he believed Khloe was an asset he could quietly remove.
He learned the truth three days after the courthouse attack.
Khloe Harrington was no longer alone.
She had Harrison Cole.
And Harrison Cole did not negotiate with people who tried to destroy his family.
Harrington Commercial Group – Executive Boardroom
The room was filled with tension.
Twenty executives sat around the polished mahogany table.
Usually, this room represented power.
Today, it represented fear.
The company's stock had already dropped.
Investors were asking questions.
News reporters were digging.
And now...
A lawsuit from Harrison Cole had frozen several major accounts.
Richard stood at the end of the table.
"This is temporary."
Nobody responded.
He hated that.
Silence from employees was normal.
Silence from executives meant they were losing confidence.
"Mr. Harrington."
The CFO, Michael Reeves, cleared his throat.
"There is a problem."
Richard looked at him.
"What problem?"
"The lawsuit requested a forensic review of company transactions."
"So?"
Michael hesitated.
"If the court approves it..."
He lowered his voice.
"They will see everything."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Everything is clean."
Michael looked away.
That tiny movement told Richard everything.
"Michael."
The CFO swallowed.
"Yes?"
"Are you questioning me?"
"No."
"Then don't look guilty."
But everyone in the room knew.
The problem wasn't what Harrison might find.
The problem was what he already knew.
The Divorce Papers
That afternoon, Richard received a call from his divorce attorney.
"Richard, we need to talk."
The tone immediately bothered him.
"What happened?"
"The divorce petition."
"What about it?"
"Withdraw it."
Silence.
"What?"
"Withdraw it."
Richard stood.
"Absolutely not."
The attorney sighed.
"You don't understand the situation."
"I understand perfectly."
Richard walked toward the window.
"Khloe attacked my reputation."
"Your wife was pushed down courthouse stairs."
A pause.
"By the woman you were having an affair with."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"That is not the point."
"It is exactly the point."
The attorney continued.
"You filed for divorce expecting a quiet settlement."
"You expected Khloe to sign."
"You expected her to disappear."
"That is no longer happening."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Because of Harrison."
"Yes."
For the first time...
Richard admitted the possibility.
Maybe he had underestimated the brother.
"What do you suggest?"
The attorney answered carefully.
"Stop fighting the divorce."
Richard frowned.
"Explain."
"Change strategy."
The New Plan
Richard's new strategy was simple.
If he couldn't make Khloe disappear...
He would make the world believe she was unstable.
His lawyers prepared documents.
Psychological evaluations.
Medical history requests.
Private investigators.
Everything designed to create doubt.
The story would be:
Khloe was emotionally traumatized.
Khloe was unstable after pregnancy complications.
Khloe's brother was influencing her decisions.
Khloe was using the attack as revenge.
Richard believed public opinion mattered.
He believed judges cared about appearances.
He believed money could create enough confusion.
But he forgot something.
Harrison Cole knew exactly how people like him thought.
Cole & Associates
Harrison sat across from his legal team.
The divorce documents were displayed on a large screen.
Daniel Pierce looked angry.
"They're going after her mental health."
Harrison didn't react.
"They always do."
"They're claiming she fabricated emotional distress."
Harrison nodded.
"Expected."
Daniel looked confused.
"You expected this?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Harrison leaned back.
"Because men like Richard have one weakness."
"What?"
"They cannot imagine losing."
He tapped the document.
"When someone like Richard realizes money won't save him..."
"They attack credibility."
Another attorney entered.
"Harrison."
"Yes?"
"We found something."
She placed a file on the table.
"Richard wasn't just hiding money."
Harrison opened it.
Inside were transfer records.
"These are not business accounts."
"No."
"What are they?"
"Divorce preparation accounts."
Harrison studied the documents.
Richard had been moving money months before filing.
Not after.
Before.
"He planned to leave."
"Yes."
"He planned to hide assets."
"Yes."
"He planned to make Khloe pay."
"Yes."
Harrison closed the file.
"Good."
Daniel looked surprised.
"Good?"
"Now we know the story."
Khloe Learns The Truth
That evening, Harrison visited the hospital.
Khloe was sitting near the window.
She looked exhausted.
But stronger.
"Harry?"
"I found something."
She looked at his face.
"Bad?"
"Yes."
A pause.
"But useful."
He handed her the documents.
She read quietly.
Every page hurt.
Every number.
Every hidden account.
Every plan.
"He was going to leave me."
Harrison didn't answer.
"He wasn't waiting until after the baby."
"No."
"He was already gone."
Her voice broke.
"Was anything real?"
That question hurt Harrison more than anger.
Because he knew what she meant.
Not the money.
Not the marriage.
The memories.
He sat beside her.
"Khloe."
She looked at him.
"Some people can love you and still become selfish."
"But that doesn't mean the love was fake."
She looked down.
"I don't know what to believe anymore."
Harrison understood.
Betrayal wasn't just losing someone.
It was losing your understanding of the past.
The Courtroom Ambush
Five days later...
The first divorce hearing began.
Richard arrived wearing a perfectly tailored suit.
The image of a successful businessman.
A man under attack.
A victim.
The media loved him.
Until Harrison entered.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Richard's attorney stood.
"Your Honor, we believe Mrs. Harrington has demonstrated concerning emotional instability."
Harrison remained seated.
No reaction.
"We request a psychological evaluation before custody decisions regarding the child."
Khloe looked shocked.
Richard's attorney continued.
"Given the circumstances of the courthouse incident..."
Harrison stood.
"Your Honor."
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Cole?"
"I would like to introduce evidence."
He placed a folder before the judge.
"Evidence showing Mr. Harrington began preparing financial abandonment of my sister five months before this incident."
The courtroom became silent.
Richard's attorney immediately objected.
"That is irrelevant."
Harrison looked at him.
"Is it?"
He opened the folder.
"Because these documents show Mr. Harrington created offshore accounts."
"Moved marital funds."
"And planned to leave his pregnant wife financially vulnerable."
The judge looked serious.
"Mr. Harrington?"
Richard remained silent.
Harrison continued.
"And we also have evidence proving his mistress was not an accident."
Richard's face changed.
The judge looked up.
"Explain."
Harrison smiled slightly.
Not happily.
Professionally.
"The divorce was not a separation."
"It was an extraction."
He displayed the evidence.
Vanessa's messages.
Financial records.
Private communications.
One sentence appeared on the screen.
"Once Khloe is gone, the nursery will finally belong to us."
The courtroom erupted.
Richard stared at Harrison.
For the first time...
He understood.
The divorce trap had failed.
Because Harrison had turned it around.
But Harrison wasn't finished.
Not even close.
After the hearing, Richard confronted his lawyer.
"You said this would work."
The lawyer looked exhausted.
"I didn't know Harrison had this much."
Richard lowered his voice.
"What happens now?"
The attorney looked toward the courthouse doors.
Where Harrison stood beside Khloe.
Protecting her.
Waiting.
"Now?"
A pause.
"Now you find out why everyone fears him."
That night...
Harrison received an anonymous email.
No sender.
One attachment.
A photograph.
It showed Khloe entering the courthouse on the day she was pushed.
But something was different.
In the background...
Someone else was watching.
Not Richard.
Not Vanessa.
Someone hidden.
Below the image was one sentence:
You are looking at the wrong enemy.
Harrison stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Richard Harrington is only the beginning.
For the first time since taking Khloe's case...
Harrison Cole felt something he rarely experienced.
Uncertainty.
Because the divorce was never the real war.
May you like
It was only the opening move.
