Chapter 5 – The Baby They Tried to Erase

Chapter 5 – The Baby They Tried to Erase
The storm outside the hospital had lasted all night.
Rain attacked the windows of Montgomery County Medical Center, turning the city lights into blurred shadows.
Inside room 814, Khloe Harrington slept with one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
Even unconscious, she held onto the same instinct that had defined her entire life.
Protect.
Love.
Endure.
Harrison sat beside her bed.
He had barely moved for twelve hours.
The world knew him as a man who could destroy corporations with a few documents and a carefully chosen sentence.
But nobody in the world knew this version of Harrison Cole.
The brother sitting silently beside his pregnant sister.
The brother counting every breath.
The brother terrified of losing the only family he had left.
A nurse entered quietly.
"Mr. Cole?"
Harrison stood immediately.
"Yes?"
"The doctor wants to speak with you."
His expression changed.
"Is something wrong?"
The nurse hesitated.
"Please come with me."
That sentence was enough.
Harrison had heard it thousands of times in courtrooms.
A phrase people used before delivering bad news.
The Doctor's Warning
Dr. Samuel Whitmore stood in the consultation room holding Khloe's medical file.
He looked serious.
"Harrison, I want you to understand something."
"Tell me."
"Your sister is strong."
Harrison nodded.
"I know."
"But her body has been through extreme trauma."
Harrison remained silent.
"The fall caused internal stress. The baby is stable right now, but there is a risk."
"What risk?"
The doctor looked directly at him.
"Premature labor."
The room became quiet.
"How much time?"
"We don't know."
"Days?"
"Maybe."
"Weeks?"
"Possible."
Harrison clenched his jaw.
"But?"
The doctor continued.
"If labor begins too early, both mother and child could face serious complications."
For a moment...
Harrison said nothing.
Then:
"What does she need?"
"Rest."
"Protection."
"And no additional stress."
Harrison almost laughed.
No stress.
A pregnant woman had been betrayed by her husband.
Pushed down courthouse stairs.
Dragged into a legal battle.
And someone wanted her to have no stress.
"I understand."
The doctor looked at him.
"Mr. Cole?"
"Yes?"
"Your sister is lucky to have you."
Harrison looked through the glass window toward Khloe's room.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"She shouldn't have needed me."
The Custody Attack
Two days later...
Richard Harrington made his next move.
The timing was perfect.
Cruel.
Calculated.
At 8:00 a.m., Khloe received legal documents.
A petition for emergency custody rights.
Before the baby was even born.
She stared at the papers.
Her hands began shaking.
"Harry..."
Harrison took the documents.
His expression immediately hardened.
Richard's argument was simple.
He claimed Khloe was unstable.
He claimed Harrison's involvement created hostility.
He claimed he was concerned about the child's safety.
The irony was almost unbelievable.
The man who stood still while another woman pushed his pregnant wife down stairs...
Was claiming to be protecting his child.
Khloe whispered:
"He wants my baby."
Harrison looked at her.
"No."
"What?"
"He wants control."
She looked confused.
"He doesn't care about being a father?"
Harrison didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Richard doesn't want a child."
A pause.
"He wants an heir."
Those words hurt because Khloe knew they were true.
Richard's Public Image
Meanwhile, Richard appeared on television.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Sad eyes.
The public saw a grieving husband.
Not a man accused of betrayal.
"I only want what is best for my child."
He said.
"I hope Khloe can receive the support she needs."
The interviewer looked sympathetic.
"Do you believe she is dangerous?"
Richard sighed.
"I don't want to say that."
A pause.
"But I worry about her emotional state."
It was brilliant.
A carefully designed attack.
No direct accusations.
Just enough doubt.
But Richard made another mistake.
He underestimated Harrison's patience.
Harrison's Counterattack
That afternoon, Harrison held a press conference.
Everyone expected anger.
A dramatic statement.
Instead...
He simply presented facts.
"The opposing party claims concern for Mrs. Harrington's emotional stability."
He placed a document on the podium.
"However, these records show Mr. Richard Harrington maintained a two-year affair during his wife's fertility treatments."
The crowd reacted.
"These records also show Mr. Harrington planned financial separation before the child's birth."
Another document.
"And finally..."
Harrison paused.
"The emergency custody petition was filed forty-eight hours after my sister was physically attacked."
Silence.
A reporter raised a hand.
"Mr. Cole, are you saying Mr. Harrington benefited from the attack?"
Harrison looked directly at the cameras.
"I'm saying the evidence will answer that question."
That was all.
No accusations.
No emotion.
Just evidence.
And everyone knew.
When Harrison Cole said evidence would speak...
Someone was about to suffer.
Vanessa Breaks
That evening, Vanessa watched the press conference alone.
Every word felt like another brick collapsing around her.
She wasn't just exposed.
She was abandoned.
Her phone rang.
Richard.
She almost didn't answer.
But she did.
"What do you want?"
Richard sounded angry.
"You need to stay quiet."
Vanessa laughed.
"Still giving orders?"
"Vanessa."
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"Tell me the truth."
Silence.
"Did you ever love me?"
Richard didn't answer.
That was her answer.
She closed her eyes.
"You never planned to leave Khloe for me."
Another silence.
"You just needed me."
Richard's voice became colder.
"You are making a mistake."
"No."
She looked at the photographs on her table.
"No, Richard."
"You made me a mistake."
She ended the call.
For the first time...
Vanessa considered telling the truth.
The Hidden Recording
The next morning, Harrison received another package.
No sender.
Again.
Inside was a small device.
A recording.
He pressed play.
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Once Khloe signs, the baby becomes irrelevant."
Harrison froze.
Another voice.
Vanessa.
"What if she refuses?"
Richard laughed.
"She won't."
A pause.
Then Richard said something that made Harrison's entire body go still.
"Even if she keeps the baby, I can take it from her."
The recording ended.
Daniel looked at Harrison.
"Is that real?"
Harrison replayed it.
"Yes."
"Where did this come from?"
"I don't know."
Daniel frowned.
"Someone is helping us."
Harrison looked at the device.
"No."
He understood.
Someone wasn't helping.
Someone was watching.
The Birth Threat
That night, Khloe woke up suddenly.
Pain.
Sharp.
Immediate.
"Harry..."
Harrison jumped from the chair.
"What's wrong?"
She grabbed his hand.
"I don't know."
The monitor beside her began changing.
Nurses rushed in.
The room filled with movement.
Commands.
Medical voices.
Harrison stood outside as the doors closed.
Again.
Waiting.
Again.
Powerless.
A doctor came out.
"Mr. Cole."
His heart stopped.
"Is she okay?"
The doctor nodded.
"She is stable."
"And the baby?"
"Also stable."
Harrison breathed.
"But..."
There was always a but.
"Your sister needs to remain under observation."
"When?"
The doctor looked at him.
"She may not make it to full term."
Harrison looked through the glass.
Khloe slept.
One hand over her stomach.
The child Richard wanted to use.
The child Vanessa wanted to claim.
The child everyone treated like a possession.
To Harrison...
She wasn't an inheritance.
She wasn't a weapon.
She was his niece.
And he made a promise silently.
No courtroom.
No billionaire.
No enemy.
No empire.
Would ever take this child away from his sister.
Across the city...
A man watched the news report.
Marcus Vale.
He turned off the television.
The plan was changing.
Harrison Cole was becoming harder to control.
His phone rang.
The same unknown number.
"How bad?"
Marcus answered.
"Bad."
A pause.
"Then remove the weakness."
Marcus looked toward the hospital.
"Khloe?"
"No."
The voice became colder.
"The baby."
Marcus stared at the phone.
For the first time...
Even he hesitated.
Because there was one thing even ruthless people understood.
Some lines should never be crossed.
But the person giving orders had already crossed them.
May you like
Long ago.
