Chapter 1 — The Thirty Marble Steps

Chapter 1 — The Thirty Marble Steps
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
“Move!”
A paramedic climbed into the back and immediately dropped beside Khloe.
Her navy maternity dress was soaked with blood.
Too much blood.
She could hear voices around her, but they sounded distant, as if she were sinking beneath deep water.
“Ma’am, stay with us.”
Khloe tried to answer.
Nothing came out.
Her hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.
“My baby…”
“We're taking you to Montgomery General.”
“My baby…”
“We know. We're doing everything we can.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
The last thing she remembered was Vanessa's face at the top of those thirty marble steps.
The next thing she remembered was Harrison.
Her brother.
His expensive suit covered in her blood.
His hands trembling as he held hers.
And his voice.
“Khloe, look at me.”
She had never heard fear in his voice before.
Not like that.
“Harrison…”
“I'm here.”
“The baby…”
“I know.”
“Please…”
He leaned closer.
“I swear to you, I'm going to get you both through this.”
The ambulance accelerated through the city.
Behind them, police officers were still standing at the courthouse.
And at the top of the staircase, Vanessa Kensington hadn't moved.
She was staring at the blood on her hands.
The Emergency Room
The ambulance reached the hospital in less than eight minutes.
It felt like an eternity.
The doors opened.
A team of doctors rushed forward.
“Eight months pregnant, female, approximately thirty-two years old.”
“Trauma from a fall down stairs.”
“Possible abdominal trauma.”
“Blood pressure dropping.”
“Get OB in here now.”
Khloe was pushed through the emergency doors.
Harrison tried to follow.
A nurse blocked him.
“Sir, you have to wait here.”
“That's my sister.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“That's my sister.”
The nurse looked into his eyes.
She understood immediately.
“Mr. Cole, the doctors are working on her.”
“What about the baby?”
“We don't know yet.”
Those four words hit him harder than any courtroom defeat he'd ever experienced.
We don't know yet.
Harrison stepped backward.
For the first time in years, he had nothing to threaten.
No judge to persuade.
No opposing attorney to destroy.
No contract to challenge.
Just a closed hospital door.
And his sister on the other side.
Richard Arrives
Twenty minutes later, Richard Harrington entered the hospital.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't crying.
He wasn't even breathing heavily.
He walked toward Harrison with his phone in one hand.
“Harrison.”
Harrison turned.
Their eyes met.
Richard stopped.
Something in Harrison's expression made him hesitate.
“I didn't push her.”
Harrison said nothing.
“I swear.”
Still nothing.
“Vanessa did it.”
Harrison finally spoke.
“You watched.”
Richard swallowed.
“She came at Khloe. I—”
“You watched.”
“I was shocked.”
“You watched my sister fall down thirty marble steps.”
“I didn't know what to do.”
Harrison took one step closer.
“You knew exactly what to do.”
Richard looked away.
“She was your wife.”
“I know.”
“You didn't move.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“I was in shock.”
Harrison nodded slowly.
“That's what you'll tell the police.”
Richard looked at him.
“What?”
“That you were in shock.”
Harrison's voice remained almost gentle.
“And when the prosecutor asks why you didn't call the ambulance…”
Richard's face changed.
Harrison continued.
“…you'll tell them you were too shocked.”
Richard went pale.
“I called.”
“No.”
Harrison pulled out his phone.
“I have the courthouse security log.”
Richard froze.
“You called someone.”
A pause.
“Not the ambulance.”
Richard said nothing.
“You called Vanessa.”
The Phone Call
Harrison had already obtained the courthouse security footage.
The call lasted forty-seven seconds.
Immediately after Khloe hit the bottom of the stairs, Richard had pulled out his phone.
He didn't call emergency services.
He called Vanessa.
Harrison played the recording.
Richard's voice came through the speaker.
“Get out of there.”
Vanessa's voice shook.
“What about her?”
Richard replied:
“Leave her.”
Harrison stopped the recording.
Silence.
Richard stared at him.
“I was panicking.”
“You had forty-seven seconds.”
“I didn't know what to do.”
“You knew enough to protect Vanessa.”
Richard's face hardened.
“You don't understand.”
“No.”
Harrison stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.”
He lowered his voice.
“You watched my sister fall.”
Richard didn't answer.
“You saw her bleeding.”
Nothing.
“And your first concern was the woman who pushed her.”
Richard finally whispered:
“I love Vanessa.”
Harrison looked at him for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
“I believe you.”
Richard seemed almost relieved.
Until Harrison continued.
“And that's going to make this much easier.”
The Operating Room
Inside the operating room, doctors surrounded Khloe.
“Fetal heart rate?”
“It's unstable.”
“Get the monitor.”
“Pressure?”
“Eighty over fifty.”
“We may need an emergency C-section.”
Khloe heard the words.
Emergency.
C-section.
Baby.
Her eyes opened.
“Is my baby alive?”
A nurse leaned toward her.
“We're trying.”
Khloe began to cry.
“Please…”
The doctor took her hand.
“We're going to do everything possible.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
She thought about the nursery.
The tiny white crib.
The blue blanket she had bought three months earlier.
The little stuffed elephant sitting beside it.
She had spent weeks imagining holding her baby.
She hadn't even chosen a name.
She whispered:
“Please don't take my baby.”
The monitor suddenly changed.
A doctor looked up.
“Heart rate dropping.”
“Prepare for surgery.”
The Waiting Room
Harrison sat alone.
His suit was still covered in Khloe's blood.
He hadn't changed.
He didn't care.
His phone kept ringing.
He ignored every call.
Then one message appeared.
Vanessa has been detained.
Another followed.
Richard's father has arrived with counsel.
Then another.
Media already knows.
Harrison turned the phone off.
He didn't care about the media.
He didn't care about the Harrington family.
He didn't care about the billion-dollar corporation Richard had inherited.
He cared about one thing.
The door.
The door behind which his little sister was fighting for her life.
A doctor finally appeared.
Harrison stood immediately.
“How is she?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Mr. Cole…”
“Tell me.”
“She lost a significant amount of blood.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes.”
Harrison exhaled.
“The baby?”
The doctor looked down.
“We don't know yet.”
Harrison's face went still.
“Explain.”
“The fall caused severe trauma. We're performing an emergency C-section.”
“Will the baby survive?”
“We're doing everything we can.”
Harrison nodded.
“Then do more.”
The doctor stared at him.
“We will.”
Harrison stepped back.
“I'll be here.”
Vanessa's Story
Across the hospital, Vanessa sat in a small interview room.
Her hands were cuffed.
Her dress was stained with blood.
Khloe's blood.
A detective placed a photograph on the table.
“Do you know her?”
Vanessa stared at it.
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
“Khloe Harrington.”
“Your relationship?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“She's Richard's wife.”
“Were you involved romantically with Richard?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
The detective waited.
“Two years.”
“And you knew she was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“You pushed her.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn't mean for her to fall.”
The detective's expression hardened.
“You pushed an eight-month pregnant woman down thirty marble stairs.”
“I just wanted her to leave me alone.”
“You pushed her.”
“She grabbed me.”
“Security footage shows otherwise.”
Vanessa looked up.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Richard promised he would leave her.”
The detective said nothing.
“He said the marriage was over.”
“You believed him.”
“Yes.”
“And today?”
“He told me she was going to divorce him.”
The detective leaned forward.
“So why confront her?”
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Because I found out something.”
“What?”
She looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Khloe wasn't supposed to be pregnant.”
The detective frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa said nothing.
The Secret
Back in the hospital, Harrison received a call.
It was from his investigator, Marcus.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“Vanessa wasn't acting alone.”
Harrison stood.
“Explain.”
“I checked her financial records.”
“And?”
“She received payments.”
“From Richard?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Marcus hesitated.
“An account connected to the Harrington family.”
Harrison's expression changed.
“How much?”
“Over six hundred thousand dollars.”
“When?”
“Over the last eight months.”
Harrison stared at the hospital doors.
Eight months.
Exactly the length of Khloe's pregnancy.
“Find out where it came from.”
“I already did.”
“Who?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Richard's mother.”
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
“Evelyn Harrington.”
“Yes.”
Harrison ended the call.
He had known Evelyn for years.
She was elegant.
Charitable.
Respected.
And vicious when crossed.
But why would she pay Vanessa?
Why would she want Khloe gone?
And why had the payments begun when Khloe became pregnant?
Harrison's phone rang again.
This time it was an unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“You're looking in the wrong direction.”
“Who is this?”
“If you want your sister and her baby to survive, stop investigating the Harrington family.”
Harrison's expression became cold.
“Who are you?”
The woman hung up.
The Baby
Three hours later, the operating-room doors opened.
A neonatal doctor rushed past Harrison carrying a tiny incubator.
Harrison stood.
“Doctor!”
The doctor stopped.
“Your sister's alive.”
“And the baby?”
The doctor looked at him.
“It's a boy.”
Harrison's eyes filled with tears.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Is he okay?”
“He's extremely premature and has suffered trauma, but he has a heartbeat.”
Harrison closed his eyes.
A shaky breath escaped him.
“Can I see him?”
“Soon.”
“And Khloe?”
“She lost a lot of blood, but she's stable.”
Harrison leaned against the wall.
For the first time that day, his shoulders dropped.
His sister was alive.
Her son was alive.
That was enough.
For now.
Khloe Wakes
It was nearly dawn when Khloe opened her eyes.
The room was dark.
Machines beeped softly.
Her throat hurt.
Her body felt impossibly heavy.
She turned her head.
Harrison was asleep in a chair beside her bed.
She whispered:
“Harry.”
His eyes opened immediately.
He stood.
“I'm here.”
“My baby?”
“He's alive.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“A boy.”
She smiled weakly.
“A boy?”
Harrison nodded.
“He's fighting.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
“Can I see him?”
“Soon.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Thank you.”
Harrison sat beside her.
“You don't thank me.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because you're my little sister.”
A faint smile appeared.
“I haven't been little in years.”
“To me, you have.”
She laughed softly.
Then winced.
Harrison's expression changed.
“What hurts?”
“Everything.”
He smiled sadly.
“Then we'll fix everything.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Harry?”
“Yes?”
“Richard…”
Harrison went silent.
“He didn't help me.”
“I know.”
“He just stood there.”
“I know.”
“I looked at him.”
Her voice cracked.
“I begged him.”
Harrison's jaw tightened.
“I know.”
Khloe looked toward the ceiling.
“I don't understand.”
“You don't have to.”
“He was my husband.”
Harrison gently squeezed her hand.
“Not anymore.”
She looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
Harrison was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
“Nothing.”
Khloe frowned.
“Harry…”
“Not yet.”
His voice was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“I want you to recover.”
“And Richard?”
Harrison looked toward the window.
Outside, the sun was beginning to rise over Baltimore.
“He thinks this is a family scandal.”
Harrison's eyes hardened.
“He thinks he'll hire lawyers.”
He looked back at Khloe.
“He thinks he'll pay people to make this disappear.”
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“He's wrong.”
The Promise
Khloe's eyes slowly closed.
“Don't do anything stupid.”
Harrison laughed softly.
“I'm an attorney.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
He leaned closer.
“I won't do anything stupid.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
Khloe fell asleep.
Harrison stood beside the window.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
We found the first transfer.
Then another.
The money came from Evelyn Harrington.
Another.
But there's something else.
Harrison opened the attachment.
It was a photograph.
Richard.
Vanessa.
Evelyn.
And another man Harrison didn't recognize.
They were standing together six months earlier.
The date was clearly visible.
Three weeks before Khloe announced her pregnancy.
Harrison stared at the photograph.
Then Marcus sent one final message.
They were discussing Khloe.
Harrison's eyes went cold.
He zoomed in.
The unknown man was holding a folder.
On the folder was a name.
PROJECT HARRINGTON — PHASE ONE.
Harrison slowly put down his phone.
He looked through the glass toward Khloe's room.
His little sister was asleep.
Her newborn son was fighting for his life.
And the people responsible believed the worst was already over.
They were wrong.
Harrison picked up his phone.
He called Marcus.
“Start with the money.”
“Okay.”
“Then the phone records.”
“Got it.”
“Then every property owned by Evelyn Harrington.”
Marcus hesitated.
“And Richard?”
Harrison looked at the bloodstains still covering his suit.
“Richard comes last.”
“Why?”
Harrison's voice became almost a whisper.
“Because I want him to watch everything else disappear first.”
He ended the call.
Then he stood alone in the hospital corridor.
He didn't shout.
He didn't threaten anyone.
He didn't promise revenge.
He simply looked at the closed doors of the neonatal unit.
And quietly said:
“You hurt my sister.”
His expression hardened.
“You tried to take her child.”
A pause.
“Now I'm going to take everything you thought made you untouchable.”
Behind him, a monitor began beeping faster.
A nurse rushed toward the neonatal unit.
Harrison turned.
The nurse's face was suddenly tense.
“Mr. Cole?”
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you.”
His heart stopped.
“Is the baby okay?”
The nurse hesitated.
Then whispered:
“There's been a complication.”
Harrison's face went white.
May you like
And for the first time that morning, the man who had promised to destroy an empire realized he might have to fight for the one thing no courtroom could guarantee—
his nephew's life.
