Chapter 5 — The Hospital Recording

Chapter 5 — The Hospital Recording

Vanessa was waiting in an interrogation room when Harrison arrived.

She looked nothing like the woman who had stood at the top of the courthouse steps.

Her designer dress was wrinkled.

Her hair was disheveled.

There were dark circles beneath her eyes.

But Harrison noticed something else.

She kept looking toward the ceiling.

Toward the security camera.

As if she were afraid it could hear her thoughts.

“You said you know who the father is,” Harrison said.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I do.”

“Then tell me.”

“I can't.”

Harrison pulled out a chair.

“You tried to kill my sister.”

“I know.”

“You may spend the rest of your life in prison.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you protecting the person who ordered you?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because you don't understand what they can do.”

“Try me.”

She looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“The fall wasn't supposed to happen that way.”

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“I was supposed to make Khloe disappear.”

“How?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was told not to hurt her.”

“Then why did you push her?”

“Because everything went wrong.”

“What was the plan?”

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“They wanted her dead without anyone knowing it was murder.”

The Original Plan

Vanessa took a breath.

“Three weeks before the courthouse incident, Richard met me at a hotel.”

“Who else was there?”

“His mother.”

“Evelyn.”

Vanessa nodded.

“She gave me instructions.”

“What instructions?”

“She said Khloe had become a problem.”

“Because of the pregnancy?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I didn't know.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“What were you told to do?”

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Make Khloe look unstable.”

Harrison frowned.

“Explain.”

“Emails. Messages. Arguments. Anything that could make Richard claim she was emotionally unstable.”

“So the divorce would favor him.”

Vanessa nodded.

“But that wasn't enough.”

“What came next?”

“They wanted her to leave the state.”

“And if she refused?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Then I was supposed to arrange an accident.”

Harrison went completely still.

“What kind?”

“A car accident.”

He stared at her.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Khloe found out.”

“Found out what?”

“That Richard was having an affair.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“That wasn't even the real secret.”

The Courthouse

Harrison pulled up the security footage.

“Tell me what happened that day.”

Vanessa watched the screen.

“Richard told me Khloe would be at the courthouse.”

“Why?”

“He knew she was meeting her attorney.”

“For what?”

“The prenup.”

Harrison paused the video.

“Did Richard arrange that meeting?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to know whether she'd discovered the inheritance clause.”

Harrison's expression hardened.

“Did she?”

“I think so.”

“So he sent you.”

Vanessa nodded.

“To frighten her.”

“And if she didn't cooperate?”

“I was supposed to follow the backup plan.”

“What backup plan?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Make it look like Khloe attacked me first.”

Harrison stared at her.

“That would give Richard grounds to claim self-defense.”

“Yes.”

“But you pushed her.”

“I lost control.”

“No.”

Harrison's voice became cold.

“You didn't.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You were instructed.”

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The Recording Nobody Had Seen

Harrison returned to his office.

Marcus was waiting.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“Hospital security footage.”

Harrison frowned.

“Why hospital?”

“Because the footage from the courthouse wasn't complete.”

Marcus connected his laptop.

“After Khloe was taken away, Richard went into the courthouse medical room.”

“Why?”

“Watch.”

The footage began.

Richard entered alone.

He closed the door.

Then he made a phone call.

Harrison recognized the number.

Evelyn.

Richard spoke quietly.

“She survived.”

Pause.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“No, the baby survived too.”

Richard paced.

“I know what the clause says.”

He stopped.

Then:

“No. Vanessa didn't fail.”

Harrison leaned toward the screen.

Richard continued:

“She followed the plan.”

A voice came faintly through the phone.

Evelyn.

Harrison increased the volume.

“Then why is Khloe still alive?”

Richard's face tightened.

“I don't know.”

Evelyn replied:

“You were told to make certain.”

Richard whispered:

“I couldn't do it myself.”

Harrison froze.

Evelyn's voice came again.

“That's why we paid Vanessa.”

The recording ended.

Harrison stared at the screen.

Marcus said nothing.

Then Harrison asked:

“When was this recorded?”

“Three minutes after Khloe was taken away.”

“Who had access?”

“Courthouse security.”

“Who gave it to us?”

Marcus hesitated.

“We don't know.”

Harrison looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“The original file was deleted.”

“Then how did we get it?”

“Someone restored it.”

“Who?”

“We're trying to find out.”

The Hidden Camera

There was another problem.

Harrison noticed something in the recording.

A reflection in the medical-room window.

A person standing outside.

He paused the footage.

Zoomed in.

There.

A woman.

She was holding a phone.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Can you identify her?”

Harrison enlarged the image.

His expression changed.

“I know her.”

“Who?”

“Evelyn's assistant.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why would she be there?”

Harrison didn't answer.

Because the woman wasn't simply watching.

She was recording Richard.

And someone had apparently wanted Harrison to find it.

The Hospital

At 8:45 p.m., Khloe's condition suddenly worsened.

Harrison was beside her when alarms erupted.

“Her blood pressure is dropping.”

“Get the doctor.”

“She's bleeding again.”

Harrison stepped backward.

Doctors rushed in.

A nurse pushed him toward the door.

“Sir, you need to leave.”

“What's happening?”

“We need room.”

The door closed.

Harrison stood in the corridor.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

“We have another problem.”

“What?”

“The nurse who was working with Khloe disappeared.”

Harrison's heart stopped.

“What nurse?”

“The one from the photograph.”

Harrison looked toward the closed room.

The same nurse.

The woman seen holding the syringe.

“Find her.”

“We're trying.”

“No.”

Harrison's voice became deadly calm.

“Find her now.”

The Security Footage

Twenty minutes later, Marcus sent him another file.

Harrison opened it.

The hospital corridor.

2:14 a.m.

The nurse entered Khloe's room.

She looked around.

Then she removed something from her pocket.

A syringe.

Harrison's blood ran cold.

But before the nurse could approach Khloe—

the door opened.

A doctor walked in.

The nurse immediately hid the syringe.

The doctor said something.

The nurse left.

Harrison watched the footage again.

Then again.

“Wait.”

Marcus paused it.

“What?”

“Go back.”

“To when?”

“The nurse's hands.”

Marcus rewound.

Harrison stared.

There was a small bracelet around the nurse's wrist.

A black leather band.

With a silver symbol.

A triangle containing the letter H.

Harrison recognized it.

“That's not a hospital bracelet.”

“No.”

“It's Harrington.”

The Pattern

Harrison placed photographs across his desk.

Vanessa.

Richard.

Evelyn.

The nurse.

The clinic.

The unknown man.

Then the mysterious photograph.

Everything was connected.

But there was still one question.

Why?

Why was Khloe so dangerous?

The answer appeared in the hospital records.

Harrison requested the baby's genetic information.

He wasn't given the complete report.

Instead, he received a warning:

Restricted by court order.

Harrison stared at the screen.

“Court order?”

Marcus nodded.

“Someone sealed the genetic report before the child was even born.”

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

“That isn't possible.”

“It happened.”

“Who requested it?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Richard.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

Richard had known.

Not just about the pregnancy.

Not just about the inheritance clause.

He had known something about the baby's identity before Khloe herself did.

Vanessa's Second Confession

That night, Harrison returned to Vanessa.

He placed the hospital photograph on the table.

“Do you recognize her?”

Vanessa looked.

Her face went white.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“She worked for Evelyn.”

“What is her name?”

“Maria.”

“What was she doing at the hospital?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Think.”

“I heard Evelyn talking about her.”

“What did she say?”

“She called her the cleaner.”

Harrison stared at her.

“The cleaner?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Someone who makes problems disappear.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“Did she know about the attack?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She was there before me.”

“When?”

“Three days before the courthouse.”

“Why?”

Vanessa whispered:

“To prepare.”

“For what?”

“The emergency.”

Harrison's face hardened.

“What emergency?”

Vanessa looked him directly in the eyes.

“Khloe was never supposed to survive the courthouse.”

The Backup Plan

Harrison waited.

Vanessa continued.

“They had two plans.”

“The first was the fall.”

“Yes.”

“The second?”

“If she survived…”

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“…the hospital.”

Harrison felt cold spread through his chest.

“They planned to finish her there.”

Vanessa nodded.

“The nurse wasn't supposed to save her.”

“She was supposed to kill her.”

“Yes.”

“And the baby?”

Vanessa looked away.

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

She finally whispered:

“They said the baby couldn't be allowed to leave the hospital.”

Harrison's hands tightened into fists.

“Who said that?”

“Evelyn.”

“Who else?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Richard.”

Harrison stared at her.

Then he stood.

“That's enough.”

The Missing Nurse

At 1:20 a.m., the police found Maria.

She was in an abandoned parking garage six miles from the hospital.

Alive.

Terrified.

And carrying a suitcase.

Inside the suitcase were:

Three passports.

Two phones.

$200,000 in cash.

And a medical file.

The file contained one name.

KHLOE HARRINGTON.

But the most disturbing document wasn't Khloe's.

It was the baby's.

The file listed:

Father: Unknown.

Then underneath:

Biological identity — CLASSIFIED.

Detective Morales called Harrison.

“We found the nurse.”

“Is she talking?”

“She wants immunity.”

“Give her protection.”

“She says she knows who ordered the hospital attack.”

“Who?”

Morales hesitated.

“She won't tell us.”

“Why?”

“Because she says the person who ordered it is more powerful than Richard.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

“Where is she?”

“Police custody.”

“I'll be there.”

The Truth on Camera

Before Harrison left, Marcus stopped him.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“The hospital recording.”

“What about it?”

“We recovered the deleted segment.”

Harrison looked at the screen.

Marcus pressed play.

The footage showed the hospital corridor.

The nurse entered Khloe's room.

Then someone else appeared.

A man.

He stood behind the nurse.

He whispered something.

She nodded.

Then he handed her the syringe.

Harrison stared at the man's face.

Richard.

But there was something strange.

Richard wasn't alone.

A second person stood behind him.

A woman.

Harrison zoomed in.

His heart stopped.

It was Evelyn.

The recording continued.

Evelyn pointed toward Khloe's room.

Then she said something.

The audio was faint.

Marcus enhanced it.

Her voice became clear.

“If the mother survives, take the child.”

Harrison stared at the screen.

Then Evelyn added:

“The inheritance belongs to the bloodline, not the woman.”

The video ended.

Harrison's face became expressionless.

For years, people had feared him because he was patient.

Because he never acted without proof.

Because he never attacked emotionally.

But now there was no uncertainty.

No ambiguity.

No misunderstanding.

They had tried to kill his sister.

They had tried to kill her baby.

And they had planned both attacks before Khloe ever stepped onto those courthouse stairs.

Harrison picked up his coat.

“Call every federal contact we have.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Are you going after Evelyn?”

Harrison stopped.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Harrison looked at the frozen image on the screen.

Richard.

Evelyn.

The nurse.

The syringe.

The hospital room.

And behind them all, an inheritance worth billions.

“I'm going after the person who designed the entire operation.”

Marcus frowned.

“Do we know who that is?”

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

“Not yet.”

He walked toward the door.

“But now we know something important.”

“What?”

Harrison looked back.

“The courthouse attack wasn't the beginning.”

He glanced toward the hospital.

“And it wasn't supposed to be the end.”

The Final File

At 3:07 a.m., Harrison arrived at the police station.

Maria sat in an interrogation room.

She looked terrified.

When she saw Harrison, she immediately stood.

“You're Khloe's brother.”

“Yes.”

“I need protection.”

“You'll get it.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Maria began crying.

“I wasn't supposed to kill your sister.”

Harrison stared at her.

“What were you supposed to do?”

She lowered her voice.

“I was supposed to take the baby.”

Harrison's expression hardened.

“Take him where?”

Maria looked toward the one-way mirror.

“Back to the people who created him.”

Harrison went completely still.

“Created him?”

Maria nodded.

“The fertility clinic wasn't a normal clinic.”

“What was it?”

“A private program.”

“Whose program?”

Maria swallowed.

“The Harrington family.”

Harrison stared at her.

“Why?”

Maria whispered:

“Because the baby was never supposed to belong to Richard.”

A pause.

“He was created to inherit.”

Harrison's blood ran cold.

“And who is his father?”

Maria looked at him.

Then said:

“That's the part they killed people to hide.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a tiny memory card.

“This contains the original hospital recording.”

Harrison took it.

“What does it show?”

Maria's eyes filled with fear.

“It shows who ordered the first attempt to kill Khloe.”

“Who?”

Maria whispered one name.

Harrison's face changed.

Because it wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Evelyn.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone Harrison had trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside him since the beginning.

And as he stared at the memory card, his phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.

Then another:

AFTER THAT, THE BABY DISAPPEARS.

Harrison looked through the glass at Maria.

Then at the memory card in his hand.

For the first time, he understood the real purpose of the courthouse attack.

Khloe's fall had never been the objective.

It had been a distraction.

While everyone watched thirty marble steps—

May you like

someone else had been preparing to steal the child.

And they were still inside the hospital.
