Chapter 7 — The Woman Behind Vanessa

Chapter 7 — The Woman Behind Vanessa
Vanessa had stopped crying by the time Harrison returned.
She sat behind the glass in the interrogation room, her hands wrapped around a paper cup of untouched water.
The detective stood beside the door.
“She asked for you specifically.”
Harrison entered.
Vanessa looked up.
“I know who ordered everything.”
Harrison pulled out the chair.
“Then start talking.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“It wasn't Richard.”
“I already know.”
“It wasn't Evelyn either.”
Harrison's expression hardened.
“Then who?”
Vanessa looked at the camera in the corner.
“Turn that off.”
“I can't.”
“Then you're wasting your time.”
Harrison leaned closer.
“Vanessa, my sister's baby was taken from the hospital.”
Her face changed.
“I didn't know.”
“But someone did.”
Vanessa looked down.
“They're going to kill me.”
“Not if you tell the truth.”
“You can't protect me from her.”
“Try me.”
Vanessa finally looked up.
“She calls herself Victoria.”
Harrison frowned.
“Victoria what?”
“I don't know.”
“Who is she?”
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“The woman behind Richard.”
The First Meeting
Vanessa had met Victoria six months before the courthouse attack.
At the time, she believed she was meeting a wealthy investor.
The woman arrived at a private restaurant wearing a cream-colored suit.
No jewelry.
No security.
No assistant.
She looked ordinary.
That was what frightened Vanessa most.
Victoria sat across from her.
“You're Vanessa Kensington.”
“Yes.”
“You know Richard Harrington.”
“Yes.”
“You want him.”
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
“I care about him.”
Victoria smiled.
“No. You want his position.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Victoria slid an envelope across the table.
Inside was $100,000.
Vanessa stared.
“What is this?”
“An advance.”
“For what?”
“Getting Khloe Harrington out of Richard's life.”
Vanessa looked up.
“Divorce?”
Victoria smiled.
“Something more permanent.”
Vanessa pushed the envelope back.
“I won't kill anyone.”
“I didn't ask you to.”
“What do you want?”
“I want Khloe to disappear.”
“Where?”
Victoria's smile vanished.
“Somewhere she can't return from.”
The First Threat
Vanessa stood to leave.
Victoria didn't stop her.
Instead, she said:
“You have a younger sister.”
Vanessa froze.
“Don't.”
“Emily Kensington.”
Vanessa slowly turned.
Victoria continued.
“She attends Jefferson High.”
Vanessa's face went white.
“You've been watching my family?”
“I've been watching you.”
“You said this was about Richard.”
“It is.”
“What happens if I refuse?”
Victoria opened her handbag.
Inside was a photograph of Emily.
Walking home.
Alone.
Vanessa sat down again.
“What do you want me to do?”
Victoria smiled.
“Good.”
The Instructions
Victoria gave Vanessa a phone.
“Only use this.”
“For what?”
“Communication.”
“With you?”
“Sometimes.”
“Who else?”
“You'll know.”
Vanessa received her first instruction three days later.
Get close to Khloe.
She did.
Then:
Make Richard distrust her.
She did.
Then:
Find out what Khloe knows about the prenup.
That was harder.
Because Khloe had begun asking questions.
Questions about Richard's family.
Questions about the Harrington trust.
Questions about why Evelyn hated her.
And eventually—
questions about the baby.
Victoria became impatient.
Make her afraid.
Vanessa began sending anonymous messages.
Leave Richard.
You don't know who you're married to.
Your baby will destroy this family.
But Khloe didn't leave.
She fought.
And that was when Victoria changed the plan.
The Second Plan
Vanessa remembered the phone call.
Victoria's voice had been unusually cold.
“She has to die.”
Vanessa's heart had stopped.
“No.”
“You have until Friday.”
“I won't do it.”
“Then Emily dies.”
Vanessa began crying.
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
“I promised nothing.”
“Please.”
“Friday.”
The call ended.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
Then she called Richard.
He came to her apartment that night.
“You look terrible.”
“She knows.”
“Who?”
“Khloe.”
Richard went still.
“What does she know?”
“That someone is trying to destroy her.”
Richard sat down.
“You need to leave.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because they have my sister.”
Richard looked away.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Help me.”
He whispered:
“I can't.”
“You can.”
“No.”
“Richard!”
He finally looked at her.
“Vanessa, you don't understand.”
“What?”
“If I fight them, they kill everyone.”
The Secret Agreement
Vanessa stared at him.
“Everyone?”
Richard nodded.
“Your sister.”
“Khloe.”
“The baby.”
“Who else?”
Richard didn't answer.
“Who else?”
“My mother.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Evelyn?”
Richard nodded.
“She knows.”
“About Victoria?”
“Yes.”
“Who is Victoria?”
Richard shook his head.
“I've never seen her.”
“You just said she controls everything.”
“I said she controls us.”
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Then who is she?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“The person my father feared.”
The Courthouse
Victoria eventually gave Vanessa the final instructions.
“Khloe will be at the courthouse.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I arranged the meeting.”
“What meeting?”
“Her lawyer.”
Vanessa stared.
“You arranged that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make sure she signs something.”
“What?”
“You don't need to know.”
“And if she doesn't?”
“Then you know what to do.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can't.”
Victoria's voice became terrifyingly calm.
“You already agreed.”
“I agreed to frighten her.”
“You agreed to remove her.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Please.”
“Do it.”
The call ended.
Richard's Betrayal
On the morning of the attack, Richard met Vanessa outside the courthouse.
“You're sure?”
“No.”
“Then don't make a mistake.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Are you going to help me?”
Richard looked toward the courthouse.
“No.”
“You're just going to watch?”
He didn't answer.
Vanessa whispered:
“You're a coward.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Do what you were told.”
“What if she dies?”
He looked at her.
“That may be the point.”
The Signal
Vanessa had never told anyone about the signal.
She was supposed to wait for Richard.
When Khloe appeared, Richard stood across the courtyard.
Vanessa approached.
Khloe saw her.
“What do you want?”
Vanessa began arguing.
But she wasn't really arguing.
She was waiting.
Richard touched his watch.
Once.
Twice.
Then he nodded.
That was the signal.
Vanessa pushed.
Khloe fell.
And everything went wrong.
She survived.
The baby survived.
And Harrison arrived.
Vanessa thought Victoria would kill her.
Instead, she received one message.
FINISH IT AT THE HOSPITAL.
The Hospital
Vanessa stared at Harrison.
“You already know about the nurse.”
“Yes.”
“She wasn't supposed to save Khloe.”
“I know.”
“I didn't know they would take the baby.”
“Who ordered that?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never knew the exact plan.”
“Who did?”
“Victoria.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“You must know something.”
Vanessa thought.
“She always used the same hotel.”
“Which one?”
“The old Blackstone.”
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
“That's abandoned.”
“She used the private basement.”
“Who else was there?”
“Sometimes Richard.”
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Harrison went still.
“Daniel Cole?”
“I didn't know his name then.”
“But you've seen him.”
“Yes.”
“What did he call Victoria?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Mother.”
Harrison's Silence
For several seconds, Harrison said nothing.
Then:
“Whose mother?”
“I don't know.”
“Vanessa.”
“I swear.”
“Did Daniel have a mother?”
“Everyone has a mother.”
“You know what I mean.”
Vanessa looked terrified.
“She was older.”
“How old?”
“Maybe sixty.”
Harrison's mind raced.
Daniel was in his sixties.
Victoria could have been his mother.
But there was something else.
The name Ward.
Evelyn's maiden name.
Catherine Ward.
The woman believed dead twenty-eight years earlier.
Harrison remembered the photograph.
The old family records.
The missing child.
The sealed trust.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Is Victoria's name really Victoria?”
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Catherine.”
Harrison's face went completely still.
The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
“Catherine what?”
“Catherine Ward.”
Harrison stood so quickly the chair scraped across the floor.
“No.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I told you.”
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
“Catherine Ward died twenty-eight years ago.”
“That's what everyone believes.”
Harrison stared at her.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“What does she look like?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Exactly like the woman in the old photographs.”
Harrison felt a chill.
“Why?”
Vanessa opened her eyes.
“Because it is her.”
The Real Objective
Harrison returned to his office.
He placed everything on the table.
The prenup.
The trust.
Richard's offshore accounts.
Vanessa's payments.
Daniel's photograph.
Catherine Ward's records.
And the hospital recording.
The pattern was finally visible.
Catherine hadn't disappeared.
She had gone underground.
She had created Northstar Meridian.
She had financed Richard.
She had manipulated Evelyn.
She had used Vanessa.
She had orchestrated the attack.
And she wanted Khloe's baby.
But why?
Harrison turned to Marcus.
“Find Catherine's son.”
Marcus frowned.
“Daniel?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Harrison pointed to the birth record.
“Nathaniel.”
Marcus stared.
“The hidden heir?”
“Yes.”
“But Nathaniel disappeared thirty years ago.”
Harrison looked at the photograph.
“No.”
He turned it over.
There was a handwritten note.
Nathaniel is alive.
Underneath:
He is the father.
Harrison's heart stopped.
The donor.
The anonymous fertility sample.
The mysterious heir.
The baby.
Everything suddenly connected.
The child in Khloe's hospital room wasn't simply an heir to the Harrington fortune.
He was the descendant of the very man the family had erased.
And Catherine Ward had spent decades trying to control him.
Vanessa's Final Warning
Before Harrison left, Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“She told me something after the courthouse.”
“Who?”
“Catherine.”
“What did she say?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.
“She said if Khloe survived…”
Harrison waited.
“…the child would eventually find his real father.”
“And?”
“She said that couldn't happen.”
“Why?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Because his father isn't missing.”
Harrison froze.
“Where is he?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“He's been watching Khloe from the beginning.”
The Hospital Window
That evening, Harrison returned to the hospital.
Khloe was asleep.
Her baby was alive.
Barely.
Harrison stood beside the neonatal unit.
Then he noticed a man across the street.
Dark coat.
Hands in his pockets.
Watching the hospital.
Harrison stepped toward the window.
The man turned.
Their eyes met.
For one second, neither moved.
Then the man walked away.
Harrison ran outside.
But the street was empty.
On the pavement lay a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Khloe.
Richard.
The fertility clinic.
And a young man Harrison had never seen before.
On the back:
YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG MAN.
Then:
THE FATHER IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
Harrison stared at the photograph.
His phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
Catherine Ward is alive.
Another arrived immediately.
And she knows you're coming.
Then the final message:
Ask Khloe why she remembers a man she claims she has never met.
Harrison looked through the hospital window at his sleeping sister.
For the first time, he wondered whether Khloe herself knew more than she had told him.
Because if Catherine was truly alive…
If Daniel was only one piece of the conspiracy…
And if the child's biological father had been secretly watching Khloe—
then the question was no longer who wanted Khloe dead.
The question was:
May you like
Why had everyone been so desperate to control her child?
And somewhere in the darkness, Catherine Ward was already preparing her next move.
