Chapter 8 — The Family That Lied

Chapter 8 — The Family That Lied

Harrison had spent twenty-four hours studying the Harrington family.

Not their wealth.

Not their businesses.

Their lies.

Because lies had patterns.

People forgot what they said.

They forgot what they promised.

But money remembered.

Phone records remembered.

Security cameras remembered.

And Harrison had learned something during his years in court:

Families that conspired together rarely lied in exactly the same way.

Richard had said Vanessa acted alone.

Evelyn had claimed she barely knew Vanessa.

Richard's father, Charles, had insisted he had never discussed Khloe's marriage with anyone.

All three statements were false.

Harrison knew it.

He just needed to prove it.

The First Lie

The evidence began with a hotel reservation.

Three months before Khloe's wedding, Richard had booked a suite at the Blackstone Club.

The reservation was under his name.

But he hadn't been alone.

Security records showed three people entering the suite.

Richard.

Evelyn.

And Charles Harrington.

Harrison stared at the footage.

Marcus stood beside him.

“That's the first time we've seen Charles involved.”

“Not the first.”

“You think he knew?”

“I think he knew everything.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Then why has he been denying it?”

“Because he thinks his son will protect him.”

Harrison closed the laptop.

“He's wrong.”

The Woman They Used

Khloe had spent months believing she was losing her marriage because Richard had fallen in love with Vanessa.

That wasn't the truth.

The affair had been deliberately designed.

Harrison discovered the first evidence in Richard's email archive.

Six months before the courthouse attack, Richard had received a message from his mother.

She suspects something. Make her jealous.

Richard replied:

How far?

Evelyn:

Far enough that she becomes desperate.

Harrison's jaw tightened.

Another email followed.

Vanessa knows her role. Don't improvise.

Harrison stared at the screen.

Vanessa hadn't been a random mistress.

She had been selected.

And Khloe had been manipulated into believing the affair was personal.

It wasn't.

It was strategic.

The Meeting

Harrison found the next piece in a restaurant security archive.

Evelyn had met Vanessa eight times.

Not once.

Not twice.

Eight times.

Every meeting occurred within twenty-four hours of a major incident involving Khloe.

After Khloe confronted Richard:

Evelyn met Vanessa.

After Khloe discovered a suspicious bank transfer:

Evelyn met Vanessa.

After Khloe threatened divorce:

Evelyn met Vanessa.

And two days before the courthouse attack:

Evelyn met Vanessa for three hours.

Harrison called Marcus.

“Get me the audio.”

“There wasn't supposed to be audio.”

“There is now.”

“How?”

“The restaurant owner installed microphones after a security incident.”

Marcus found the recording.

Harrison pressed play.

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

“Richard can't know everything.”

Vanessa replied:

“Then what am I supposed to tell him?”

Evelyn answered:

“Tell him whatever keeps him obedient.”

Harrison paused the recording.

Marcus stared.

“Obedient?”

Harrison nodded.

“Richard wasn't running the operation.”

Charles Harrington

The next recording was worse.

Charles entered the restaurant.

He sat beside Evelyn.

Vanessa remained silent.

Charles spoke first.

“Is she still refusing to sign?”

Evelyn sighed.

“Yes.”

“Then pressure her.”

“She won't respond to threats.”

“Everyone responds to something.”

Vanessa looked frightened.

Charles continued:

“What does she care about?”

Evelyn answered:

“The baby.”

Charles went quiet.

Then:

“Good.”

Harrison's hand tightened around the phone.

Marcus whispered:

“That's disgusting.”

Harrison didn't respond.

The recording continued.

Charles said:

“If she leaves Richard before the child is born, the trust becomes complicated.”

Evelyn replied:

“That's why she can't leave.”

“And if she refuses?”

Evelyn looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered:

“Then we make her believe Richard wants me.”

Charles laughed.

“Excellent.”

Harrison stopped the recording.

For several seconds, the office was silent.

Then he said:

“They didn't just know about the affair.”

Marcus looked at him.

“They created it.”

The Conversation Khloe Never Heard

Harrison went to the hospital.

Khloe was awake.

He sat beside her.

“I need to tell you something.”

She immediately knew it was serious.

“What?”

“The affair.”

Her expression tightened.

“What about it?”

“It was planned.”

Khloe stared at him.

“What?”

“Vanessa wasn't simply Richard's mistress.”

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“She was recruited.”

“By whom?”

“Your in-laws.”

Khloe shook her head.

“No.”

“I have recordings.”

“My father-in-law hated me.”

“I know.”

“My mother-in-law never wanted me in that family.”

“I know.”

Khloe looked down.

“But why?”

Harrison hesitated.

“Because they needed you to believe Richard didn't love you.”

She looked up.

“Why?”

“So you would leave.”

Khloe's voice trembled.

“Then why didn't they just divorce me?”

“Because of the inheritance clause.”

She went silent.

“If you left before giving birth to an eligible heir,” Harrison explained, “the Harrington family retained control.”

Khloe stared at him.

“So they needed me pregnant…”

“Yes.”

“But miserable.”

“Yes.”

“Then why try to kill me?”

Harrison's voice became quiet.

“Because they lost control of the timeline.”

Richard's Father Breaks

Charles Harrington finally agreed to meet Harrison.

He chose a private library.

No attorneys.

No cameras.

Just the two men.

Charles looked older than Harrison remembered.

His hands trembled.

“You think I wanted this?”

Harrison sat opposite him.

“You funded it.”

“I was protecting my family.”

“You helped destroy your son's wife.”

“I was protecting the company.”

“You helped orchestrate an attack on a pregnant woman.”

Charles looked away.

“I never ordered anyone to push her.”

“But you knew she would be attacked.”

Silence.

Harrison leaned forward.

“Didn't you?”

Charles closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Harrison felt no satisfaction.

Only disgust.

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn said it had to happen.”

“You could have stopped her.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

Harrison's voice hardened.

“You tried to save the company.”

Charles looked at him.

“That isn't fair.”

“Fair?”

Harrison laughed once.

“My sister almost died.”

Charles's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You watched them manipulate her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched your son cheat on her.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Vanessa threaten her.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

Charles whispered:

“I was afraid.”

“Of Evelyn?”

Charles shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Charles looked directly at Harrison.

“Catherine.”

Harrison froze.

Catherine's Shadow

“Catherine Ward?”

Charles nodded.

“She controls more than you understand.”

“What does she want?”

“The child.”

“Why?”

Charles looked toward the window.

“Because the child is connected to the original heir.”

Harrison already knew about Nathaniel.

But Charles continued.

“Thirty years ago, my father disinherited his eldest daughter.”

“Why?”

“She had a son.”

“Nathaniel.”

Charles's face changed.

“You know his name.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because your family tried to erase him.”

Charles shook his head.

“We didn't erase him.”

“Then where is he?”

Charles didn't answer.

Harrison stood.

“Where is he?”

Charles whispered:

“Dead.”

Harrison froze.

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

Silence.

“How?”

“A car accident.”

Harrison's blood went cold.

“That's impossible.”

“It happened.”

“Who confirmed the body?”

Charles looked away.

“No one.”

Harrison stared at him.

“You don't know he's dead.”

Charles shook his head.

“We were told.”

“By whom?”

Charles looked terrified.

“Catherine.”

The Affair Wasn't What Khloe Thought

That evening, Harrison confronted Richard.

Richard sat in custody, staring through the glass.

“You knew.”

Richard looked up.

“Knew what?”

“The affair was manufactured.”

He said nothing.

“Vanessa was recruited by your mother.”

Silence.

“Your father knew.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“And you participated.”

Richard finally whispered:

“I didn't have a choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Richard looked at him.

“They had my debts.”

Harrison's expression hardened.

“They paid them.”

“Yes.”

“Then you married Khloe because of them.”

Richard nodded.

“They told me to make her trust me.”

“And then?”

“Make her pregnant.”

Harrison's blood ran cold.

“Was the fertility treatment part of the plan?”

Richard looked away.

“Yes.”

“Who chose the donor?”

Richard hesitated.

“I wasn't supposed to know.”

“But you did.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Richard's voice dropped.

“Nathaniel.”

Harrison froze.

“What?”

“The donor was Nathaniel.”

“Your family's erased heir?”

Richard nodded.

“That was the secret.”

Why Khloe Was Chosen

Harrison stared at him.

“Why Khloe?”

Richard swallowed.

“Because she had the right medical profile.”

“What does that mean?”

“She was compatible with the treatment.”

“Who selected her?”

“Evelyn.”

“Why?”

Richard's voice cracked.

“Because the baby needed to carry Nathaniel's blood.”

Harrison finally understood.

The pregnancy wasn't an accident.

It was the center of the entire plan.

Khloe had been selected to carry a child who could satisfy the inheritance clause.

But Richard wasn't the father.

Nathaniel was.

And the family had known.

Harrison looked at Richard.

“Did Khloe know?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa know?”

“No.”

“Did your parents?”

Richard hesitated.

“Yes.”

Harrison stared at him.

“Then the affair…”

Richard nodded.

“Was a distraction.”

The Family Meeting

Harrison called Evelyn, Charles, and Richard's attorneys into one room.

Khloe's name was never mentioned.

The recordings played first.

Evelyn's voice.

Charles's voice.

Vanessa's voice.

Then Richard's confession.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Evelyn stood.

“This proves nothing.”

Harrison looked at her.

“It proves conspiracy.”

“You don't understand the trust.”

“I understand enough.”

“You don't.”

She leaned forward.

“You think you're saving Khloe.”

“I am.”

“You're putting the entire family at risk.”

“No.”

Harrison's voice became ice.

“You put your family at risk the moment you decided my sister's life was less valuable than your fortune.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

Then Harrison placed one final document on the table.

“The original fertility records.”

Richard stared.

Charles looked horrified.

Evelyn went completely still.

Harrison said:

“Your family used an anonymous donor.”

Evelyn said nothing.

“You hid the identity.”

Silence.

“You falsified the marriage documents.”

Nothing.

“And you created a fake affair to force Khloe into a position where she would remain dependent on Richard.”

Evelyn finally spoke.

“You have no idea what that child means.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“Then tell me.”

She smiled.

“No.”

The Woman in the Hallway

That night, Khloe received a visitor.

She didn't recognize him.

He stood outside her hospital room.

“Mrs. Harrington?”

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“Who are you?”

He stepped into the light.

Khloe's eyes widened.

She had seen his photograph before.

It was the same man from the courthouse.

The same man who had been watching the hospital.

He looked at her stomach.

Then at the baby.

“I'm Nathaniel.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

“That can't be.”

“I know what they told you.”

“Who are you?”

He looked toward the hallway.

“Someone who was supposed to be dead.”

Khloe stared at him.

“You're the baby's father.”

Nathaniel nodded.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you let them do this?”

“I didn't.”

“Then where have you been?”

“Hiding.”

“From whom?”

Nathaniel's expression changed.

“From my mother.”

Khloe whispered:

“Catherine.”

He nodded.

Then he looked toward the neonatal unit.

“She doesn't want the baby because of the inheritance.”

“Then why?”

Nathaniel's face became grim.

“Because the baby is the last living proof of what she did thirty years ago.”

Before Khloe could ask another question, the lights in the hallway went out.

Nathaniel grabbed her hand.

“Don't make a sound.”

A shadow moved beneath the door.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming closer.

Nathaniel whispered:

“They found me.”

Khloe's heart pounded.

The door handle began turning.

And somewhere down the hall, Harrison's phone rang.

A message appeared:

THE FAMILY LIED TO YOU.

Then another:

BUT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES.

And finally:

ASK NATHANIEL WHO HIS MOTHER REALLY IS.

Harrison looked toward Khloe's room.

His face hardened.

Because the family conspiracy had just revealed its deepest secret.

The woman everyone believed was Catherine Ward—

the woman supposedly dead for twenty-eight years—

wasn't simply manipulating the Harrington family.

She had a personal reason to control the baby.

And now her supposedly dead son had returned.

The family had spent decades burying the truth.

But the truth had finally walked back through the hospital door.
