Chapter 12 — The Trial of Vanessa Kensington

Chapter 12 — The Trial of Vanessa Kensington
The courtroom was packed before sunrise.
Reporters crowded the marble steps.
Cameras waited behind barricades.
Every major network in Pennsylvania had sent someone.
The name Vanessa Kensington had become synonymous with the courthouse attack that nearly killed Khloe.
But Harrison knew the woman walking into that courtroom wasn't the end of the story.
She was the doorway.
And if he asked the right questions, Vanessa would open it.
The Defendant
Vanessa entered wearing a plain gray suit.
No jewelry.
No makeup beyond what was necessary.
No trace remained of the glamorous woman who had once walked beside Richard Harrington as though she already owned his life.
She looked frightened.
But Harrison noticed something else.
She kept looking toward the gallery.
Not at Richard.
Not at his parents.
At one empty seat.
Harrison followed her gaze.
Nothing.
He turned back.
“She's waiting for someone.”
Marcus nodded.
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“But she does.”
The Charges
The prosecution presented the case simply.
Vanessa had followed Khloe to the courthouse.
She had confronted her.
She had shoved her.
Khloe had fallen thirty marble steps.
The hospital records established severe injuries.
The pregnancy had been placed at risk.
Security footage showed Vanessa's hands on Khloe.
It looked like an open-and-shut case.
Then Harrison stood.
He wasn't there to defend Vanessa.
He was there because Khloe had asked him to uncover the truth.
And the truth was bigger than one woman.
The Prosecutor's Question
“Ms. Kensington,” the prosecutor began, “did you push Khloe Harrington?”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Yes.”
The courtroom erupted.
The judge struck the gavel.
“Order!”
The prosecutor continued.
“Why?”
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“She wouldn't leave.”
“Leave where?”
“Richard.”
“So you wanted her marriage?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why did you attack her?”
Vanessa looked toward the gallery.
“I was ordered to.”
Silence.
The prosecutor stopped.
“Ordered by whom?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Evelyn Harrington.”
A wave of whispers swept through the courtroom.
Richard's mother sat motionless.
The prosecutor looked stunned.
“You're saying Richard's mother instructed you to attack his wife?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Two days before the courthouse.”
“Where?”
“At the Harrington estate.”
“Who was present?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then said:
“Richard.”
The courtroom went silent again.
Richard's Lie
Richard had previously claimed he didn't know Vanessa intended to harm Khloe.
Now Vanessa was saying he was present when the plan was discussed.
The prosecutor turned toward him.
Richard looked down.
Vanessa continued.
“He didn't tell me to push her.”
“Then what did he say?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“He said Khloe couldn't be allowed to reach the judge.”
Harrison's expression changed.
The prosecutor asked:
“Why?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You must have known something.”
“I knew enough to be scared.”
“Scared of whom?”
Vanessa looked directly at Evelyn.
“Her.”
Evelyn's Reaction
Evelyn didn't move.
But Harrison noticed her fingers.
They were trembling.
The prosecutor continued.
“What did Evelyn promise you?”
“Money.”
“How much?”
“Two million dollars.”
“For pushing Khloe?”
“No.”
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
“For making sure she never testified.”
Harrison leaned forward.
That changed everything.
The courthouse attack hadn't been about Richard's marriage.
It had been about testimony.
Khloe had been scheduled to testify about the Harrington trust.
If she had reached the courtroom—
she could have exposed the entire financial structure.
The Missing Evidence
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you receive the money?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because I failed.”
“What do you mean?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Khloe survived.”
The courtroom fell silent.
Then Vanessa said something no one expected.
“Evelyn told me I would be paid after Khloe died.”
Richard's face went white.
His attorney stood.
“Objection!”
“Sustained.”
The judge warned the jury.
But the damage was done.
The prosecution had established motive.
And Harrison had something better.
A connection.
Harrison's Cross-Examination
Harrison approached the witness stand.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You hate me.”
“No.”
“You hate Khloe.”
“No.”
“You hate Richard?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“I did.”
Harrison placed a document before her.
“You were paid $150,000 six months before the attack.”
Vanessa nodded.
“By whom?”
“An account.”
“Whose account?”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
She looked down.
“It belonged to Northstar.”
Harrison nodded.
“And Northstar is controlled by?”
“Catherine Ward.”
The courtroom went silent.
Harrison continued.
“You met Catherine?”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“Five.”
“When was the first?”
“Before I met Richard.”
Harrison stopped.
“Before you met Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa began crying.
“She recruited me.”
The Recruitment
Vanessa had been working as a model when Catherine approached her.
She was told she would be introduced to a wealthy businessman.
She was given a script.
She was instructed to appear interested in Richard.
She was told exactly what questions to ask.
Exactly what photographs to take.
Exactly when to disappear.
Harrison asked:
“And Khloe?”
“I was told she would become jealous.”
“And then?”
“She would leave Richard.”
“And if she didn't?”
Vanessa's voice broke.
“They had another plan.”
“What plan?”
“To make her look unstable.”
Harrison turned toward the jury.
The courtroom was completely silent.
The Pregnancy
Harrison placed another document before Vanessa.
“Did Catherine tell you about the pregnancy?”
“Yes.”
“Before Vanessa became involved with Richard?”
“Yes.”
Harrison paused.
“You knew Khloe would become pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“They had medical records.”
Harrison's expression hardened.
“Whose medical records?”
“Khloe's.”
“Who gave them to Catherine?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
“No.”
Harrison leaned closer.
“Look at me.”
Vanessa did.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Someone inside your law firm.”
Harrison's heart tightened.
“Who?”
“I never met him.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because Catherine called him.”
The Phone Call
Vanessa described the call.
Catherine had placed her phone on speaker.
A man's voice came through.
He told Catherine Khloe's legal strategy.
Her scheduled testimony.
The documents she intended to submit.
The evidence Harrison had collected.
Everything.
Harrison asked:
“Did you recognize the voice?”
“No.”
“Would you recognize it now?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
Harrison turned toward the judge.
“We request that the recording be played.”
The prosecution objected.
The judge considered it.
Then allowed it.
Vanessa's voice from months earlier filled the courtroom.
Then Catherine's.
Then a man's voice.
Low.
Calm.
Familiar.
Harrison froze.
He knew that voice.
Everyone in his firm knew it.
It belonged to—
Jonathan Pierce.
His own law partner.
The Betrayal
The gallery exploded.
Jonathan stood.
“This is fabricated!”
Harrison looked at him.
The recording continued.
Jonathan told Catherine exactly when Khloe would testify.
He gave her copies of documents.
He explained the inheritance clause.
He discussed Harrison's movements.
And then he said:
“Once Khloe disappears, Harrison will be isolated.”
Harrison stared at Jonathan.
Jonathan had been betraying him for years.
But the final sentence was worse.
“The child must survive.”
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
The judge ordered silence.
Harrison returned to the witness stand.
“Vanessa, did Catherine tell you why the child had to survive?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Did you know who the child's biological father was?”
“No.”
“Did Richard?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Catherine?”
“Yes.”
“Did Jonathan?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Harrison stepped back.
That answer was enough.
The Twist
The prosecutor resumed questioning.
“Ms. Kensington, did you ever see a document identifying the child's father?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“In Catherine's house.”
“What did it say?”
Vanessa's face went pale.
“I wasn't supposed to read it.”
“But you did.”
“Yes.”
“What did it say?”
Vanessa looked toward Harrison.
“The baby wasn't Richard's.”
That wasn't news.
Everyone already suspected it.
Then she continued.
“It wasn't Nathaniel's either.”
The courtroom went silent.
Harrison's pulse quickened.
“Who was the father?”
Vanessa began shaking.
“I don't know.”
“Then why did the document matter?”
“Because it said the father's identity had been sealed by…”
She stopped.
“By whom?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father.”
Harrison froze.
His father.
Again.
The dead man was still controlling the case.
The Letter
Harrison immediately remembered the letter his father had left him.
The one Catherine had demanded.
The one that mentioned Khloe.
The one that suggested Harrison himself had been part of the original plan.
He looked toward the evidence table.
The letter was there.
He hadn't opened the final sealed section.
Not yet.
He had been waiting.
Now he understood why.
The seal wasn't merely legal.
It was biological.
His father had deliberately withheld something.
Something connected to the baby's DNA.
Harrison looked at Vanessa.
“One final question.”
She nodded.
“Did Catherine know who the father was?”
“Yes.”
“Did she fear him?”
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he could destroy everything.”
“Who is he?”
Vanessa stared at Harrison.
Then whispered:
“Your brother.”
Harrison stopped breathing.
The courtroom disappeared around him.
His brother?
He had no brother.
At least—
that's what he'd always believed.
The Conspiracy Expands
Vanessa's testimony continued for another two hours.
She revealed:
Catherine had recruited her.
Evelyn had funded her.
Richard had participated.
Jonathan had supplied confidential legal information.
The fertility clinic had falsified records.
Northstar had financed the operation.
And the original trust had been created by Harrison's father.
But one question remained.
Who was Harrison's brother?
The answer appeared in an old document recovered from Catherine's estate.
A birth record.
A child born twenty-eight years earlier.
Alexander Cole.
Listed mother:
Eleanor Cole.
Listed father:
Unknown.
Status:
Deceased.
Harrison stared at it.
Another fake death.
Another missing heir.
Another lie.
But this time, something was different.
The DNA profile attached to Alexander matched the baby's genetic markers.
Harrison's hands went cold.
The baby wasn't merely connected to the Cole family.
He was the direct descendant of Alexander.
And Alexander was Harrison's brother.
Vanessa's Last Revelation
Before leaving the stand, Vanessa turned toward Harrison.
“There is one more thing.”
Harrison approached.
“What?”
“Catherine didn't order me to kill Khloe.”
Harrison frowned.
“What?”
“She ordered me to make Khloe disappear.”
“Why?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knew Khloe was about to discover where Alexander was buried.”
Harrison stared.
“Alexander is dead.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Then where is he?”
She whispered:
“That's what Catherine has been protecting.”
Harrison's phone vibrated.
One message.
From an unknown number.
STOP THE TRIAL.
Another arrived.
OR YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR SISTER AGAIN.
Harrison looked toward the courtroom doors.
Khloe was still missing.
Eleanor was still missing.
And now he knew another impossible truth.
His brother Alexander might still be alive.
Vanessa had exposed the conspiracy.
But instead of closing the case, her testimony had opened something much darker.
The trial had been intended to prove that Vanessa acted alone.
Instead, it had established something far more dangerous:
the attack on Khloe was only one move in a conspiracy that had existed for nearly thirty years.
Harrison slowly turned toward Richard.
Richard was staring at him.
Terrified.
Harrison approached.
“You knew.”
Richard shook his head.
“I didn't know he was alive.”
“Who?”
Richard swallowed.
“Alexander.”
Harrison's expression hardened.
“Where is he?”
Richard looked toward the courtroom entrance.
Then whispered:
“Ask your mother.”
Harrison froze.
“My mother is dead.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
A terrible silence followed.
“She isn't.”
Harrison's phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a number he had never seen.
He answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Harry?”
His blood ran cold.
He knew that voice.
It was the voice of his mother.
“Mom?”
A pause.
Then:
“Don't trust Eleanor.”
The call ended.
Harrison stood motionless.
Vanessa's testimony had destroyed Richard's defense.
It had exposed the law-firm betrayal.
It had connected Catherine to the attack.
But now Harrison understood the real purpose of the trial.
It hadn't been designed to convict Vanessa.
It had been designed to force the truth into the open.
And someone had wanted Harrison to discover that his family tree contained a brother who supposedly never existed—
a mother who supposedly died—
and a child whose DNA could rewrite the ownership of an entire empire.
Harrison looked at the courtroom doors.
His expression became cold.

The trial wasn't over.
It had just begun.
