Chapter 10 — The Night Their Father Died

Chapter 10 — The Night Their Father Died
Elena read the sentence again.
YOU WERE NEVER THE CHILD THEY WERE TRYING TO SAVE.
YOU WERE THE CHILD THEY WERE TRYING TO HIDE.
Her fingers tightened around the photograph.
For twenty-eight years, she had believed she was the center of the mystery.
Now she wasn't even sure she understood her own birth.
“Tell me what happened that night.”
Isabelle looked at her.
“I will.”
Julian stepped forward.
“You don't have to.”
Elena turned sharply.
“Yes, I do.”
Her voice shook.
“I've been lied to by everyone.”
She looked at Isabelle.
“I'm done being protected from the truth.”
Isabelle lowered her eyes.
“Then you need to hear what happened to our father.”
She paused.
“Because he didn't die the way you've been told.”
The Night of the Fire
Isabelle began slowly.
“It was June 15, 1995.”
Elena remembered the date.
The day after she and Isabelle had been born.
“The estate was already tense,” Isabelle continued. “Your mother had discovered the truth about Edward's plans.”
“What plans?”
“To control the inheritance through the children.”
Julian interrupted.
“That's why Daniel was taken.”
Isabelle nodded.
“Your mother knew Daniel carried the blood marker Edward wanted.”
“And me?”
“You carried something else.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
Isabelle looked at her.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That Edward had falsified the family lineage for decades.”
Elena stared.
“So that's why I was hidden.”
“Yes.”
“Not because I was the heir.”
“No.”
“Because I could expose him.”
Isabelle nodded.
“You were the evidence.”
The Nursery
Claire pulled an old floor plan from her bag.
“The nursery was here.”
She pointed to the western wing.
“This room was connected to the library by a servants' passage.”
Elena studied it.
“That's where the fire began.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father kept the original family records there.”
Adrian understood.
“The birth records.”
“Exactly.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“And the trust documents.”
“Yes.”
Someone had wanted to destroy every piece of evidence.
But Alexander had anticipated it.
“He made copies,” Isabelle said.
“Where?”
“Here.”
She tapped her chest.
“I memorized what he told me.”
Elena frowned.
“You were a baby.”
Isabelle smiled sadly.
“I wasn't.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Isabelle looked at her.
“The woman you're calling Isabelle…”
She pointed toward herself.
“…wasn't the infant.”
The First Betrayal
Elena stepped backward.
“Then who are you?”
Isabelle's expression changed.
“My name is Clara Reed.”
Samuel went white.
“No.”
Clara looked at him.
“Your father raised me.”
“But…”
“He raised me because your mother asked him to.”
Elena stared.
“Then where is my sister?”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
Julian whispered:
“She's the one who was taken.”
Clara nodded.
“The real Isabelle.”
Elena felt as if the floor had disappeared.
“Then who was the baby in the photograph?”
“Me.”
“The baby beside our mother?”
“Yes.”
“And I?”
“You were the other child.”
Elena looked at the photograph.
Two babies.
Two identities.
Three names.
One family.
She whispered:
“Who am I?”
Clara answered:
“Elena Laurent.”
“And you?”
“Clara Reed.”
“Then where is Isabelle?”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Your father died trying to find her.”
Alexander's Last Night
Twenty-eight years earlier, Alexander had discovered that Edward's men had taken one of the twins.
He confronted Eleanor.
She denied everything.
Then Alexander found the records.
Eleanor had arranged for one child to disappear.
But there was a second betrayal.
Victor had secretly been working for Edward.
The fire wasn't intended to kill Alexander.
It was meant to destroy the records.
But everything went wrong.
Alexander escaped the burning library carrying one infant.
Daniel.
Claire carried the other.
Elena.
And Isabelle—
the real Isabelle—
was already gone.
“Who took her?”
Elena asked.
Clara whispered:
“Edward.”
The Man in the Shadows
Alexander ran through the servants' corridor.
Smoke filled the estate.
He reached the rear entrance.
Victor was waiting.
“You can't take him,” Victor said.
Alexander held Daniel tighter.
“Move.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Victor's voice broke.
“If you leave with that child, they'll kill everyone.”
Alexander looked toward the burning mansion.
“They already have.”
Then someone stepped from the shadows.
Edward.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a gun.
Alexander stopped.
“You.”
Edward smiled.
“You always were stubborn.”
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
Edward raised the gun.
“That's no longer your concern.”
Alexander pushed Daniel behind him.
“You're not taking my son.”
Edward's expression hardened.
“Your son belongs to the family.”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“He belongs to himself.”
A shot rang out.
The Bullet
Elena held her breath.
“Did it hit him?”
Clara nodded.
“Your father fell.”
“Was he dead?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Victor moved between Alexander and Edward.
“Run!”
Alexander grabbed Daniel.
He disappeared into the darkness.
But Edward didn't chase him.
He smiled.
Because he had another plan.
He turned toward the nursery.
Toward Elena.
The Child in the Fire
Claire had been carrying Elena.
She heard footsteps.
Then Eleanor appeared.
“Give me the child.”
Claire refused.
Eleanor reached for her.
Claire ran.
She entered the servants' passage.
Smoke surrounded her.
The baby began crying.
Claire covered Elena with her coat.
Then she saw someone coming toward her.
Alexander.
Bleeding.
“Claire!”
She ran to him.
“Take her.”
“What?”
“Take Elena.”
“And you?”
“I have to go back.”
“For Isabelle?”
“For both of them.”
Claire grabbed his arm.
“You're bleeding.”
“I know.”
“You can't go.”
Alexander looked at the infant.
“She is the key.”
“To what?”
“To stopping them.”
He kissed Elena's forehead.
Then whispered:
“Tell her I never abandoned her.”
Claire began crying.
“Tell her yourself.”
Alexander smiled.
“I'll try.”
Then he disappeared back into the smoke.
Claire never saw him again.
The Body in the Car
Elena finally understood.
“The body.”
Clara nodded.
“Edward needed everyone to believe Alexander was dead.”
“So he found another body.”
“Yes.”
“Who was it?”
“An unidentified man.”
“And Victor?”
“Victor helped stage the scene.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor had changed sides.”
Elena frowned.
“Changed sides?”
“Yes.”
“From Edward to Alexander?”
Clara nodded.
“He realized Edward intended to kill everyone who knew about the children.”
“So Victor protected Alexander.”
“He tried.”
“Did he succeed?”
Clara looked at her.
“For a while.”
The Disappearance
Alexander survived.
He fled.
He took Daniel.
But he couldn't find Elena.
Claire had already disappeared with her.
And the real Isabelle was still missing.
Three children.
Three identities.
Three different destinies.
Alexander spent years searching for his daughters.
Meanwhile, Edward built a false story.
Alexander was dead.
Isabelle was dead.
Daniel had never existed.
And Elena—
was raised under a carefully manufactured identity.
The Laurent family continued.
The inheritance remained locked.
And Eleanor became its public matriarch.
Julian's Final Secret
Elena turned toward Julian.
“You knew Father survived.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Victor helped him.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew Isabelle was missing.”
Julian nodded.
Elena's voice hardened.
“What else?”
Julian hesitated.
“I met Father.”
Elena froze.
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“Where?”
“Boston.”
“You saw him?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know about me?”
Julian looked at her.
“He knew everything.”
“Why didn't he come to me?”
“He was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of what would happen if Eleanor discovered you were alive.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“My father was alive for twenty-six years.”
“Yes.”
“And he never came home.”
“I tried to convince him.”
“What did he say?”
Julian lowered his head.
“He said coming home would get you killed.”
The Last Conversation
Julian pulled out his phone.
“There is something else.”
A recording.
Dated six months earlier.
Alexander's voice filled the room.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably warm.
“If Elena ever finds this, tell her I'm sorry.”
Elena stopped breathing.
Alexander continued.
“I wanted to come home.”
A pause.
“But the man who took Isabelle never stopped looking for you.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“I spent twenty-eight years believing I was protecting my children.”
His voice trembled.
“I wasn't.”
“I was hiding from the wrong man.”
The recording ended.
Elena couldn't speak.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman's.
Her mother's.
Isabelle.
“If you're hearing this, Alexander failed.”
Elena's knees nearly gave way.
“But if he failed…”
The recording crackled.
“…then you must finish what we started.”
The Original Trust
Adrian replayed the final seconds.
A code appeared on the screen.
L-061495.
Samuel recognized it.
“The original trust.”
“Where is it?”
“Under the old courthouse.”
Elena stared.
“Why there?”
“Because Edward couldn't control it.”
“What does it contain?”
“The original inheritance terms.”
“And?”
Samuel hesitated.
“The identity of every legitimate Laurent heir.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then we can prove everything.”
“Maybe.”
“What's the problem?”
Samuel's face went pale.
“The trust hasn't been opened in twenty-eight years.”
“Why?”
“Because it requires three living Laurent descendants.”
Elena understood.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabelle.”
Samuel nodded.
“But we don't know where either of them is.”
Clara corrected him.
“You know where Daniel is.”
Everyone turned.
Clara looked toward the door.
“He's been here all along.”
The Missing Son Returns
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Approximately thirty-five.
He looked at Elena.
She immediately recognized his eyes.
The same eyes from the photograph.
“Daniel?”
The man nodded.
“Elena.”
Her breath caught.
“You knew me?”
“For years.”
“Why didn't you come?”
“Because your father asked me not to.”
“Where is he?”
Daniel looked down.
“He's gone.”
Elena froze.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“How?”
Daniel hesitated.
“He died.”
The room went silent.
Elena's voice cracked.
“Where?”
“In my arms.”
She closed her eyes.
Her father had survived the fire.
He had survived the family.
He had survived twenty-eight years of hiding.
But he had died three months before she found him.
Daniel stepped closer.
“He left something for you.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
Father's Final Letter
Elena opened it.
The handwriting shook.
My Elena,
If Daniel gives you this letter, then I am already gone.
She couldn't stop the tears.
I know you will hate me.
You should.
I should have found you sooner.
I should have protected both of you.
But I made one terrible mistake.
Elena's hands trembled.
I trusted Eleanor.
She looked up.
Julian whispered:
“Of course.”
She continued reading.
She wasn't the mastermind.
Elena stopped.
A cold feeling spread through her.
She was only protecting the person who controlled her.
The person who ordered the fire.
The person who took Isabelle.
The person who has been watching you.
Elena stared at the final line.
His name is not Edward Laurent.
She turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
I knew him as a child.
You know him as your family's greatest ally.
Elena's heart stopped.
Daniel whispered:
“He's still alive.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel answered:
“The man behind the trust.”
Then the lights went out.
A man's voice came from the darkness.
May you like
“You finally found me.”
And Elena realized they weren't alone.
