Chapter 12 — The Night They Came for Elena

Chapter 12 — The Night They Came for Elena
The gunshot echoed through the estate.
For one terrible second, everyone froze.
Then Daniel shouted:
“DOWN!”
Elena dropped behind the heavy table as another shot shattered the window.
Glass exploded across the room.
Julian pulled Elena toward the corridor.
“Move!”
“Where's Bennett?”
No answer.
The chair where Bennett had been sitting was empty.
Elena stared.
“He's gone.”
Daniel looked toward the broken window.
“No.”
He pointed to the floor.
A dark smear of blood led toward the side door.
“He was hit.”
Julian's face tightened.
“Then we leave him.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“It's too dangerous.”
“He knows where my mother is.”
Another shot struck the wall.
Elena grabbed the trust.
“Then we're taking him with us.”
The Estate Under Siege
The entire estate had become chaos.
Security alarms screamed.
Doors slammed.
Men shouted outside.
Adrian pulled up the surveillance system.
“There are at least eight vehicles.”
Julian looked at the screens.
“Eleanor brought everyone.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“These aren't Eleanor's guards.”
Julian stared.
“How do you know?”
“Because Eleanor's men wear Laurent insignias.”
He pointed at the screen.
“These men don't.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“Then who are they?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The people your mother was hiding from.”
A figure appeared on the monitor.
A woman.
Gray coat.
Black gloves.
Standing calmly beneath the estate's entrance lights.
Elena couldn't see her face.
Then the woman looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
The Voice on the Intercom
The intercom activated.
A woman's voice filled the estate.
“Elena.”
She froze.
The voice sounded strangely familiar.
“You've been looking for answers.”
Elena stepped toward the speaker.
“Who are you?”
A soft laugh.
“You've been asking the wrong people.”
“Show yourself.”
“Soon.”
Julian whispered:
“Don't engage.”
The woman continued.
“Your mother lied.”
Elena's jaw tightened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“What did she lie about?”
A pause.
Then:
“Your identity.”
Elena felt cold.
“What about it?”
“You aren't Elena Laurent.”
Julian immediately looked at her.
The woman laughed.
“Ask your brother.”
Elena turned.
“Julian?”
He said nothing.
“Tell me.”
Julian swallowed.
“She's lying.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
The voice returned.
“Then ask him why your original birth certificate doesn't exist.”
Elena's heart dropped.
The Certificate
Julian closed his eyes.
Elena stepped toward him.
“You destroyed it.”
“I was ordered to.”
“By Eleanor?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it contained the wrong name.”
Elena stared.
“What name?”
Julian hesitated.
“Isabelle.”
Silence.
The voice over the intercom laughed softly.
“There it is.”
Elena felt dizzy.
“You called me Isabelle?”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why was that name on my certificate?”
“Because your mother named you Isabelle.”
“Then why did everyone call me Elena?”
“Because Eleanor changed it.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“She changed my name?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Julian looked at her.
“To make you disappear.”
The First Door Falls
A massive crash shook the east wing.
Someone had breached the outer door.
Daniel grabbed a weapon from one of the fallen guards.
“We have two minutes.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“We need to move.”
“Where?”
“The underground passage.”
Julian shook his head.
“They'll expect that.”
“Then where?”
Julian pointed toward the library.
“There is another exit.”
They ran.
Behind them came the sound of boots.
Dozens of them.
Elena clutched the trust against her chest.
Every step brought her closer to the truth.
And closer to the woman who had spent twenty-eight years hiding it.
The Hidden Room
Julian pushed a bookshelf aside.
A narrow passage appeared.
Elena stared.
“How many secret rooms does this family have?”
“Too many.”
They entered.
The bookshelf closed behind them.
Immediately, someone slammed against it.
Daniel whispered:
“They're here.”
Elena looked ahead.
The passage was almost completely dark.
Then she saw something scratched into the wall.
A name.
ISABELLE.
She touched it.
“Mother?”
“No,” Daniel said.
He pointed lower.
Another name.
ELENA.
Then a third.
DANIEL.
Elena's breath caught.
“This was made for us.”
Julian nodded.
“Your father built it.”
Alexander's Room
The passage opened into a small chamber.
There was a desk.
A bed.
Several boxes.
And hundreds of photographs.
Elena walked toward them.
Her father had been living here.
Not recently.
Years ago.
She found photographs of herself at five.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Twenty.
Twenty-five.
She stared.
“He watched me.”
Julian nodded.
“He never stopped.”
Elena's tears fell.
“Why didn't he come?”
Daniel answered quietly:
“Because every time he tried, someone threatened to kill you.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He pointed to a folder.
She opened it.
Inside were surveillance reports.
SUBJECT: ELENA
LOCATION: SCHOOL
LOCATION: UNIVERSITY
LOCATION: WORK
Every year.
Every month.
Sometimes every week.
Someone had been watching her entire life.
The Woman Who Raised Her
At the bottom of the folder was a photograph of Eleanor.
But beside Eleanor stood another woman.
Elena recognized her.
Her childhood governess.
Mrs. Whitmore.
The woman who had taught her to read.
The woman who had comforted her when she was sick.
The woman who had always told her Eleanor loved her.
Elena stared.
“She was working for Mother.”
Julian nodded.
“Not Eleanor.”
“What?”
“Your mother.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“Whitmore was one of Isabelle's spies.”
The realization hit her.
The entire childhood she remembered had been staged.
But perhaps not in the way she had thought.
Some of the people she believed had betrayed her had actually been protecting her.
The Message Under the Desk
Daniel found a hidden compartment.
Inside was a cassette recorder.
He pressed play.
Alexander's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, the estate has fallen.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“I don't know whether you're Elena or Isabelle.”
Her eyes opened.
“What?”
Alexander continued.
“That was the problem.”
The recording crackled.
“Eleanor changed the children's identities so many times that even I eventually lost track of which records were real.”
Julian whispered:
“She erased the identities.”
Alexander's voice continued.
“But there is one way to know.”
A pause.
“The child I called Elena has a scar beneath her left shoulder.”
Elena immediately touched her shoulder.
She had always had a tiny scar there.
“What?”
Daniel looked at her.
Alexander continued:
“The child I called Isabelle does not.”
Elena's breathing quickened.
She had the scar.
“Then I'm Elena.”
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
The recording continued.
“But there is another secret.”
Alexander's voice became faint.
“Eleanor never changed Elena's name.”
Elena froze.
“She changed Isabelle's.”
The Real Isabelle
The room went silent.
Elena looked at Julian.
“So the woman outside…”
“Could be your sister.”
“But she called herself Isabelle.”
“Because that's her real name.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Then why did she say I was her sister?”
“Because you are.”
The mystery finally began to make sense.
Two girls.
One name.
One stolen identity.
And one family that had spent decades deliberately confusing the records.
The voice over the intercom returned.
“You understand now.”
Elena looked toward the ceiling.
“Show yourself.”
“Look at your brother.”
Julian stiffened.
Elena turned.
“What?”
The woman said:
“He knows where your sister is.”
Elena stared at Julian.
“Do you?”
Julian didn't answer.
“Julian.”
He finally whispered:
“Yes.”
The Betrayal
Elena's expression hardened.
“You said you didn't.”
“I lied.”
“Again.”
“I had to.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“You always have an excuse.”
Julian looked devastated.
“She was in danger.”
“Where?”
“Here.”
“What?”
“She has been inside the estate.”
Elena stared.
“For how long?”
“Three days.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“Where?”
Julian pointed toward the old chapel.
“Underground.”
Daniel immediately understood.
“They found her.”
Julian nodded.
“That was the plan.”
“What plan?”
“To draw everyone here.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“They didn't come for me.”
Julian looked at her.
“No.”
“They came for her.”
The Woman in the Chapel
They reached the chapel.
The door was open.
Candles were burning.
No one was inside.
Elena found blood on the floor.
“Where is she?”
Daniel searched the room.
Then stopped.
A trapdoor stood open beneath the altar.
They descended.
At the bottom was a narrow corridor.
At the end stood a woman.
Her hands were tied.
Her face was bruised.
But her eyes—
were exactly like Elena's.
“Elena?”
The woman looked up.
“No.”
She smiled weakly.
“My name is Isabelle.”
Elena couldn't move.
For twenty-eight years, she had imagined what meeting her sister would feel like.
She had never imagined it would feel like looking into a mirror.
Two Sisters
Elena approached slowly.
“Isabelle?”
“Yes.”
“You're real.”
Isabelle laughed softly.
“Unfortunately.”
Elena knelt and untied her.
“Who did this?”
“People working for Bennett.”
Elena froze.
“Bennett?”
Isabelle nodded.
“He wasn't the mastermind.”
“Then who?”
Before Isabelle could answer, footsteps echoed behind them.
Everyone turned.
Bennett appeared at the end of the corridor.
Blood covered his shoulder.
Elena stared.
“You're alive.”
“Barely.”
Isabelle backed away.
“You shouldn't trust him.”
Bennett looked at her.
“That's wise.”
Elena stood.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Bennett nodded.
“Your mother is alive.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“Where?”
“Below us.”
“What?”
“There is another chamber.”
He pointed beneath the chapel.
“She has been there for twenty-eight years.”
The Woman Below
They opened the final door.
Inside was a small room.
A bed.
A desk.
Medical equipment.
And a woman sitting beside the window.
Her hair was almost completely white.
Her body was thin.
But when she turned—
Elena knew her.
Every instinct inside her screamed.
“Mom?”
The woman began to cry.
“Elena.”
Elena ran toward her.
Isabelle stopped her.
“No.”
Elena froze.
“Why?”
Isabelle's voice trembled.
“Because that's not our mother.”
The woman smiled.
Then Elena noticed something.
The scar beneath the woman's left eye.
A scar she'd seen before.
On Eleanor.
The woman slowly stood.
She removed a gray wig.
Then looked at Elena.
It was Eleanor.
She had been hiding in the chamber.
Waiting.
And behind her stood the real Isabelle's mother.
Bound.
Alive.
Elena stared in horror.
Eleanor smiled.
“You finally came.”
The Last Truth
Eleanor looked at both sisters.
“You have no idea what your mother did.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Untie her.”
Eleanor laughed.
“Still giving orders.”
“You've lost.”
“No.”
Eleanor's eyes shifted toward the trust in Elena's hands.
“I've already won.”
“How?”
“Because you brought me exactly what I needed.”
Elena looked down.
The trust.
Eleanor pointed.
“The original document.”
Julian suddenly shouted:
“Don't open it!”
Too late.
The trust began glowing beneath Elena's hand.
A hidden biometric seal activated.
Everyone stared.
A message appeared across the first page.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELENA ISABELLE LAURENT.
Elena's breath caught.
Then another line appeared.
SECOND HEIR CONFIRMED: ISABELLE ALEXANDRA LAURENT.
The sisters stared at each other.
Eleanor's smile vanished.
“No.”
The trust continued.
FINAL BENEFICIARY: ELENA AND ISABELLE LAURENT.
Then a final sentence appeared.
IN THE EVENT OF FAMILY FRAUD, ALL ASSETS SHALL TRANSFER TO THE TWO HEIRS AND ALL EVIDENCE SHALL BE RELEASED TO THE AUTHORITIES.
Eleanor backed away.
“No.”
Elena looked at her.
“You said you had already won.”
Eleanor's face twisted with fury.
“I will never let you take this from me.”
She reached inside her coat.
Daniel shouted:
“ELENA!”
A gunshot exploded through the chamber.
Isabelle screamed.
Elena felt someone shove her sideways.
The bullet struck the wall.
And when Elena looked up—
Julian was standing between her and Eleanor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
He looked at his sister.
Then smiled faintly.
“I guess…”
He stumbled.
“…I finally did one thing right.”
Elena caught him before he fell.
“Julian!”
His eyes closed.
Eleanor stared at the blood on her hands.
For the first time—
she looked afraid.
And from somewhere above them came the distant sound of sirens.
Dozens of them.
Elena looked at Adrian.
“Who called them?”
Adrian shook his head.
“I didn't.”
Bennett smiled faintly.
“I did.”
Elena stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked toward the two sisters.
“Because your mother asked me to.”
The real Isabelle lifted her head.
May you like
And whispered:
“It's time for the Laurent family to answer for everything.”
