Chapter 7 — The Woman in the Photograph

Chapter 7 — The Woman in the Photograph
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The abandoned laboratory seemed to hold its breath.
Elena stared at the man standing in the doorway.
The face was older than the one in the photographs, but there was no mistaking it.
The same sharp eyes.
The same narrow jaw.
The same expression Elena had seen in the picture beside her father.
Yet his words made no sense.
The man you buried twenty-eight years ago wasn't your father.
Julian was the first to react.
“You're lying.”
The man looked at him.
“You've spent your entire life saying that word whenever the truth frightened you.”
“Who are you?”
“I already told you.”
“Alexander Laurent.”
The man smiled.
“That's the name I was born with.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You said our father wasn't Alexander.”
“He wasn't.”
“Then who was he?”
The man's expression changed.
“That is the question you should have asked twenty-eight years ago.”
Elena's voice hardened.
“I was four.”
“I know.”
“And you expect me to believe you?”
“No.”
He reached inside his coat.
Adrian immediately moved in front of Elena.
The man stopped.
Slowly, he withdrew a photograph.
He placed it on the floor.
Then stepped backward.
“Look at it.”
Elena picked it up.
Her fingers began to tremble.
It was a photograph of a woman.
Young.
Beautiful.
Standing beside a hospital bed.
And beside her was a newborn baby.
Elena's breath caught.
She knew that woman.
She had seen her face only once before.
In an old photograph hidden in her mother's diary.
The woman was smiling.
But the baby in her arms—
was Elena.
The Woman
Elena turned the photograph over.
A date had been written on the back.
June 14, 1995.
Her birth date.
Underneath it were five words:
Isabelle and her first daughter.
Elena looked at the man.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your mother gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Two weeks before she disappeared.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“You knew her.”
“I loved her.”
The room became silent.
Adrian stared at him.
“You're saying you were involved with our mother?”
The man shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
He looked at Elena.
“I was protecting her.”
“From whom?”
“Your father.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because you still don't understand.”
He stepped toward the photograph.
“Isabelle wasn't afraid of Eleanor.”
Elena froze.
“She wasn't?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
The man looked directly into her eyes.
“She was afraid of the man she believed was Alexander Valmont.”
The Photograph That Shouldn't Exist
Julian snatched the photograph from Elena.
He stared at it.
“That isn't possible.”
“What?”
“The hospital.”
He pointed to the background.
“I recognize it.”
Adrian looked closer.
“Meridian.”
Julian nodded.
“I saw this building in Father's old records.”
Elena looked at the man.
“Was my mother treated here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She gave birth here.”
“To me?”
“To someone else.”
Elena went still.
“What?”
The man reached into his coat again.
This time he removed a second photograph.
A newborn.
Another woman.
Another date.
June 14, 1995.
Same day.
Same hospital.
Elena stared.
The two babies looked almost identical.
Her blood ran cold.
“There were two births.”
The man nodded.
“One was yours.”
“And the other?”
He didn't answer.
Elena stepped closer.
“Who was the other baby?”
The man looked at her.
“That is why your mother was killed.”
The Woman Behind the Children
Elena's voice dropped.
“My mother wasn't killed.”
The man smiled sadly.
“You were told she died.”
“Victor said she was taken.”
“Victor didn't know everything.”
“Then tell me.”
The man looked toward the dark corridor.
“Not here.”
“I'm not leaving until you answer.”
He studied her for a moment.
Then said:
“Your mother discovered that someone had replaced one child with another.”
Julian frowned.
“Replaced?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the Laurent inheritance followed blood.”
Adrian understood first.
“Someone wanted the wrong child to inherit.”
The man nodded.
“Exactly.”
Elena looked at the two photographs.
“Which child was supposed to inherit?”
“The one who was born first.”
“And which one was born first?”
He looked at her.
“You were.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“Then who was the other baby?”
The man's expression hardened.
“Eleanor's.”
Julian stepped backward.
“My mother's?”
“No.”
The man looked at him.
“Her child.”
Julian's face went blank.
“My mother had another child?”
“She did.”
“And she gave it away?”
“She gave it to the Laurent family.”
The Secret Daughter
Elena couldn't breathe.
“You're saying Eleanor had a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
The man didn't answer.
“Where?”
“She died.”
“When?”
“Twenty-eight years ago.”
Julian stared.
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because Eleanor couldn't allow anyone to know she had given birth to a daughter.”
“Why?”
“Because the girl was the wrong bloodline.”
Elena frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It will.”
The man took out another document.
A hospital record.
Female infant.
Mother: Eleanor Valmont.
Father: Unknown.
Status: Deceased.
Elena stared.
Then noticed something.
The date of death was exactly one day after her own birth.
She looked up.
“That's when the switch happened.”
“Yes.”
“Who switched us?”
The man didn't answer.
“Who?”
He looked toward Julian.
“Your father.”
The Man Elena Called Father
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“He wasn't your biological father.”
“You've said that.”
“He was a man named Thomas Reed.”
Samuel's name suddenly came to Elena's mind.
The trustee.
Samuel Reed.
She stared at the man.
“Thomas Reed?”
“Samuel's father.”
Elena's stomach dropped.
“The trustee?”
“Yes.”
“Why would Samuel know?”
“He was a child when it happened.”
Adrian looked confused.
“Then why protect the secret?”
“Because his father swore an oath.”
“To whom?”
“Isabelle.”
Elena's mind raced.
“Wait.”
She looked at the photograph.
“The woman behind the babies…”
She turned it over.
There was a faint mark in the corner.
A monogram.
E.R.
“Elena Reed?”
The man shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Evelyn Reed.”
Elena remembered the elderly woman from the nursing home.
The woman who had known about Anthony.
The woman who had given them the DNA report.
The woman who had warned them.
“Evelyn.”
The man nodded.
“She was there.”
Evelyn's Confession
They found Evelyn that evening.
She was waiting for them.
She seemed unsurprised to see Elena.
“I wondered when you would come.”
Elena placed the photograph on the table.
“You were there.”
Evelyn looked at it.
“Yes.”
“You saw the babies.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew the children were switched.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Julian stepped forward.
“Why did you lie to us?”
“I didn't lie.”
“You hid the truth.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“Who was threatening you?”
Evelyn looked at Elena.
“Your grandfather.”
Elena froze.
“Marcus?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Marcus was not your grandfather.”
“Then who was he?”
“A name.”
“A name for what?”
“A man who never wanted his real identity discovered.”
Elena felt a headache forming.
“Everyone in this family has a fake name.”
Evelyn gave a sad smile.
“That's how the family survived.”
“No.”
Elena's voice hardened.
“That is how the family destroyed itself.”
The Woman in the Photograph
Evelyn pointed at the photograph.
“That woman is your mother's cousin.”
Elena stared.
“Evelyn Laurent?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Her name was Claire Laurent.”
Adrian frowned.
“I've never heard of her.”
“Because she disappeared.”
“When?”
“The night your mother disappeared.”
Elena stared at the photograph.
“Why was she holding me?”
“Because your mother trusted her.”
“Then where is Claire now?”
Evelyn looked away.
“She died.”
“How?”
“A car accident.”
“When?”
Evelyn whispered:
“The same night as Alexander.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“That's not a coincidence.”
“No.”
“Who killed her?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
Elena leaned across the table.
“Who?”
Evelyn finally whispered:
“Victor.”
The Second Body
Adrian looked shocked.
“Victor killed Claire?”
“He was ordered to.”
“By Eleanor?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Then by whom?”
Evelyn's hands began trembling.
“By the man behind the money.”
Elena stared at her.
“Anthony?”
“No.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
“Marcus?”
“No.”
Evelyn looked directly at Elena.
“None of those names are real.”
Elena felt the room tilt.
“Then tell me his real name.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Edward Laurent.”
Adrian's face changed.
“Who is Edward?”
Evelyn answered:
“The father of Marcus.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
“How old is he?”
Evelyn didn't respond.
“Elena…”
Evelyn looked at her.
“He should have died fifty years ago.”
The Family Tree
That night, Elena returned to the Laurent house.
Samuel had brought the original family genealogy.
They spread it across the dining room table.
Marcus Laurent.
Edward Laurent.
Anthony Laurent.
Alexander Laurent.
Isabelle Laurent.
Eleanor Valmont.
The names formed a tangled web.
But one line had been deliberately removed.
Elena noticed it.
“There's someone missing.”
Samuel looked up.
“Who?”
She pointed.
“Edward had two children.”
Samuel frowned.
“According to the public records, one.”
“Exactly.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Who was the second?”
Elena followed the faded ink.
The name was barely visible.
Claire Laurent.
The woman in the photograph.
Julian stared.
“So Claire was Anthony's sister.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabelle's cousin.”
“Yes.”
“And she was involved in the baby switch.”
“Yes.”
Elena's voice became quiet.
“Then Claire knew everything.”
Samuel nodded.
“And someone killed her.”
The Missing Page
Elena searched the genealogy again.
One page was missing.
The page that should have listed Claire's descendants.
“Someone removed it.”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“It wasn't removed.”
“Then where is it?”
Samuel looked toward the wall.
“There is another family tree.”
“Where?”
“In the original trust.”
Elena stared.
“The second trust?”
“Yes.”
“Take me there.”
Samuel hesitated.
“It's dangerous.”
Elena smiled bitterly.
“So is everything else.”
The Second Trust
They returned to the underground vault.
Samuel opened a hidden compartment beneath the floor.
Inside was a metal box.
Unlike the other documents, this one had no lock.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
Samuel placed his finger on it.
Nothing.
Adrian tried.
Nothing.
Julian tried.
Nothing.
Elena placed her hand on the scanner.
A green light appeared.
The box opened.
Inside was a single file.
CLAIRE LAURENT — DESCENDANTS.
Elena opened it.
There was one name.
One photograph.
One birth record.
She stared.
Then dropped the file.
Adrian picked it up.
His face went white.
Julian looked over his shoulder.
“What?”
Adrian couldn't speak.
Elena finally whispered:
“That's impossible.”
The photograph showed a young woman.
Alive.
Standing beside a child.
The child was approximately ten years old.
And the woman's face—
was unmistakable.
Claire.
Alive.
Elena looked at Samuel.
“But you said she died.”
Samuel stared at the photograph.
“I was told she did.”
The Woman Who Watched
The file contained a recent address.
Philadelphia.
A residential building.
Apartment 7B.
Elena drove there that night.
She stood outside the apartment door.
Her hand hovered over the handle.
Adrian stood behind her.
“You don't have to do this alone.”
“I know.”
She knocked.
No answer.
She knocked again.
A voice came from inside.
“Who is it?”
Elena swallowed.
“My name is Elena Laurent.”
Silence.
Then the lock clicked.
The door opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Pale.
Terrified.
Elena knew immediately.
It was the woman from the photograph.
“Claire?”
The woman stared at her.
Then covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You're alive.”
Claire began crying.
“So are you.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Claire looked behind her.
“Did anyone follow you?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Claire opened the door wider.
“Then come inside.”
The Truth Claire Had Buried
Claire locked three separate bolts.
Then she turned toward Elena.
“I've waited twenty-eight years for this.”
“For what?”
“For you to come back.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother asked me to protect you.”
Elena felt tears forming.
“You were the woman holding me.”
Claire nodded.
“I carried you out of the hospital.”
“Why?”
“Because someone was coming for you.”
“Who?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
Then Julian.
“Eleanor.”
Julian closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
“She wanted the other child.”
Elena whispered:
“Her daughter.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not Eleanor's daughter.”
“Then whose?”
Claire stared at her.
“Yours.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“Your mother had another child.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Elena.
“Isabelle gave birth to twins.”
Silence.
Elena felt the room disappear around her.
“Twins?”
“Yes.”
“Where is the second child?”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
“But you carried me out.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to my sister?”
Claire whispered:
“She was taken.”
“By whom?”
Claire looked toward the window.
Then said:
“By the man you've been calling Anthony.”
The Photograph
Claire reached into a drawer.
She removed one final photograph.
Two newborn babies.
One in each arm.
Isabelle standing behind them.
Crying.
On the back was a sentence written in her mother's handwriting:
MY CHILDREN MUST NEVER BE SEPARATED.
Elena stared at it.
“Where is she?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“She's alive?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did you say Anthony took her?”
“Because I saw him.”
“When?”
“The night she disappeared.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“What did he do?”
Claire's eyes filled with fear.
“He took your sister.”
“Where?”
“He told me…”
Claire paused.
“He told me she would become the heir.”
Elena stared.
“What heir?”
Claire looked at her.
“The heir who would eventually control the entire Laurent fortune.”
The Woman Behind the Money
Elena finally understood.
The trust wasn't merely protecting an inheritance.
It was protecting a bloodline.
Someone had spent decades searching for Isabelle's children.
One child had been hidden.
One had been erased.
And one—
had been raised under another identity.
Elena looked at the photograph.
“Who is my sister?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know her name.”
“But you know where she is.”
“No.”
“You must.”
Claire's voice broke.
“The last time I saw her, she was six months old.”
Elena stared.
“Then why did Anthony take her?”
Claire whispered:
“Because he wasn't trying to steal the inheritance.”
“Then what was he trying to do?”
Claire looked directly into Elena's eyes.
“He was trying to save her.”
A long silence followed.
Then Claire added:
“Because someone else was hunting her.”
“Who?”
Claire's face turned pale.
“The same man who has been watching you.”
Elena's phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
YOU FOUND CLAIRE.
Another message followed.
NOW ASK HER WHO THE WOMAN IN THE SECOND PHOTOGRAPH IS.
Elena looked at Claire.
Claire's face had gone white.
“What?”
Elena turned the phone toward her.
Claire stared at the message.
Then whispered:
“He knows.”
“Who?”
Claire backed away.
“The man behind the money.”
Elena's phone vibrated again.
This time, an image appeared.
A recent photograph.
Elena.
Adrian.
Julian.
Claire.
Taken only minutes earlier.
Outside the apartment.
Someone had been watching them.
And beneath the photograph was one final message:
YOUR SISTER IS ALIVE.
May you like
SHE HAS BEEN LIVING UNDER YOUR NAME.
FIND HER BEFORE I DO.
