Chapter 6 — The Brother Who Never Existed

Chapter 6 — The Brother Who Never Existed

At 3:06 a.m., the call was still ringing in Elena's mind.

You finally found me.

Anthony.

The name from the hidden file.

The man who supposedly never existed.

The firstborn son of Marcus Laurent.

The older brother Alexander had never mentioned.

The heir whose name had been erased from every family record Elena had ever seen.

She stood in the underground vault with the telephone still in her hand.

Adrian was watching her.

“So?”

Elena slowly looked up.

“It was him.”

“You're sure?”

“I've never heard his voice before.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because he knew my name.”

Julian's face tightened.

“Anyone monitoring us could know your name.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“He said it like he knew me.”

Adrian glanced toward Samuel.

“Can we trace the call?”

Samuel looked at the equipment.

“Not anymore.”

“Why?”

“The line disappeared before I could capture it.”

Julian frowned.

“People don't just disappear from phone networks.”

Samuel gave him a grim look.

“In this family, apparently they do.”

The Name That Was Erased

They returned to the library before dawn.

Elena spread every document across the table.

Anthony Laurent.

Born twenty-four years before Alexander.

Son of Marcus Laurent.

Mother: Isabelle Laurent.

But the dates were wrong.

Elena stared at the birth certificate.

“Isabelle wasn't even born when this says she was Anthony's mother.”

Adrian looked over her shoulder.

“So the document is fake.”

“Yes.”

“Then Anthony isn't our mother's son.”

“No.”

Julian frowned.

“Then why would his name be in the trust?”

Elena opened another file.

“Because someone wanted us to believe he was.”

She pulled out the photograph.

Anthony stood beside Alexander.

They looked remarkably alike.

Not identical.

But close enough that a stranger might assume they were brothers.

Julian studied the image.

“Could he be Alexander's biological father?”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“Look at the dates.”

He pointed.

“Anthony was born twenty-four years before Father.”

“That doesn't make him his father.”

“No.”

Julian paused.

“But maybe he's not a brother.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“You think he's something else.”

Julian nodded.

“Someone who needed Alexander to believe he was his brother.”

Elena stared at the photograph.

“Then who was he?”

No one answered.

The Hidden Ledger

Samuel returned with another box.

“I found this in the trust archive.”

He placed it on the table.

“This wasn't catalogued.”

Elena opened it.

Inside was a leather-bound ledger.

The first pages contained financial records from the late 1970s.

Then names.

Marcus Laurent.

Anthony Laurent.

Alexander Laurent.

Isabelle Laurent.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Evelyn Laurent.

Elena frowned.

“Who is Evelyn?”

Samuel looked at her.

“I don't know.”

Julian flipped through the pages.

“Wait.”

He pointed to a transaction.

Payment to E. Laurent — $2,500,000.

Another.

E. Laurent — $7,000,000.

Another.

E. Laurent — $12,000,000.

Adrian's expression darkened.

“Whoever Evelyn was, she was receiving serious money.”

Elena continued turning pages.

Then she found a handwritten note.

Evelyn knows about Anthony.

She stopped.

Another line:

If Anthony returns, Evelyn must be contacted first.

Elena looked at Samuel.

“Find her.”

Samuel nodded.

“I'll try.”

“No.”

Elena closed the ledger.

“We'll find her ourselves.”

The Woman in the Nursing Home

By noon, they had a name.

Evelyn Laurent.

Age ninety-one.

Former residence:

Baltimore.

Current residence:

A private care facility outside Washington, D.C.

Elena drove there with Adrian.

Julian stayed behind to meet the attorneys.

The facility was quiet.

Too quiet.

A nurse led them into a small room.

An elderly woman sat beside the window.

Her hair was white.

Her hands trembled.

But when she saw Elena—

her eyes widened.

“Oh.”

Elena stopped.

“You know me?”

Evelyn whispered:

“You have Isabelle's eyes.”

Elena felt her throat tighten.

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“Who was Anthony?”

Evelyn looked toward the door.

“Close it.”

Elena did.

Evelyn's voice became barely audible.

“Anthony was never your grandfather's son.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Then who was he?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“He was your grandfather's greatest secret.”

The Boy From the Hospital

Evelyn explained.

In 1972, Marcus Laurent was involved in a private medical research program.

The program had nothing to do with business.

It involved genetic inheritance.

“Wealthy families paid enormous amounts of money to determine which children would inherit certain hereditary conditions.”

Adrian frowned.

“That sounds insane.”

“It was.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“Marcus became obsessed with bloodlines.”

“What did he do?”

“He began collecting biological samples.”

“From whom?”

“Members of his own family.”

Elena felt a chill.

“And Anthony?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Anthony was born in a private clinic.”

“Who were his parents?”

“We never knew.”

“Then how did Marcus claim him?”

“He didn't.”

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

“Anthony claimed Marcus.”

The Child Without a Name

Anthony had appeared at the Laurent estate when he was approximately six years old.

He had no birth certificate.

No known mother.

No known father.

Only a note containing one sentence:

This child belongs to the Laurent bloodline.

Marcus accepted him.

Why?

Because Anthony carried a rare genetic marker found in Marcus's family.

Evelyn explained:

“Marcus believed Anthony was his biological grandson.”

“Through whom?”

“We didn't know.”

“Alexander?”

“No.”

“Isabelle?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn stared at Elena.

“That was the mystery.”

The Bloodline Test

Marcus ordered a private DNA analysis.

The result was never released publicly.

But Evelyn remembered one sentence from the doctor.

Anthony was related to Marcus, but not as his son.

Elena frowned.

“Then what was he?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“They never figured it out.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Maybe that's why he disappeared.”

“Maybe.”

Evelyn suddenly reached beneath her pillow.

She removed a tiny envelope.

“I kept this.”

She handed it to Elena.

Inside was a laboratory report.

Elena read the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands began shaking.

The report compared Anthony's DNA with Marcus's.

Relationship: biological half-brother or uncle.

Elena looked up.

“That's impossible.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That's what Marcus said.”

The First Lie

Adrian looked confused.

“Why would Marcus call him his son?”

“He didn't.”

Evelyn stared at Elena.

“Someone else did.”

“Who?”

Evelyn hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Alexander.”

Elena's heart sank.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Alexander discovered Anthony before Marcus did.”

“And?”

“Alexander needed to hide him.”

“From whom?”

Evelyn looked terrified.

“From the people who created him.”

Silence.

Elena leaned forward.

“Who?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“The people behind the Laurent experiments.”

The Foundation

Evelyn gave Elena a name.

The Meridian Foundation.

Elena had never heard of it.

Neither had Adrian.

But Julian recognized it immediately when they returned to the estate.

“Meridian?”

He looked through the corporate records.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“Meridian Foundation funded half of Father's early businesses.”

Elena stared at him.

“Who founded it?”

Julian searched.

“There's no individual founder.”

“Who are the trustees?”

“Anonymous.”

“Beneficiaries?”

“Anonymous.”

Elena looked at Samuel.

“Can you find out?”

He nodded.

“Give me a few hours.”

He returned three hours later.

His face was grim.

“I found the trustees.”

“Who?”

He placed a document on the table.

There were three names.

Marcus Laurent.

Victor Hale.

And—

Anthony Laurent.

Elena stared.

“Anthony controlled the foundation?”

“Yes.”

“But Anthony didn't exist.”

Samuel nodded.

“Officially.”

Adrian whispered:

“So someone created an identity for him.”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“Or someone erased the real one.”

The Man in the Hospital

That night, Elena received another message.

You are looking in the wrong place.

She typed:

Who are you?

No answer.

Then another message arrived.

Anthony never controlled the foundation.

Elena waited.

A third message appeared.

He was controlled by it.

Her blood ran cold.

Then a photograph arrived.

A hospital room.

A young man lying unconscious in a bed.

His face was unmistakable.

Anthony.

Under the photograph was a date.

1998.

Elena stared.

“He was alive when Father died.”

Adrian looked at the image.

“Maybe he knows what happened.”

“Where is this hospital?”

She zoomed in.

A small sign was visible behind the bed.

Meridian Medical Center.

Julian entered the room.

“What happened?”

Elena turned the screen toward him.

His expression changed instantly.

“That's not a hospital.”

“What?”

“Meridian Medical Center never existed.”

The Facility

Samuel found the location.

The building had been registered as a medical facility.

But its official purpose was different.

It was a research center.

Privately funded.

Privately operated.

And abandoned in 2003.

Elena looked at the satellite photograph.

“Take me there.”

Julian shook his head.

“Absolutely not.”

“Why?”

“Because we don't know who still owns it.”

“I don't care.”

“I do.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because you're my sister.”

The words surprised both of them.

Julian looked away.

“I've already failed you once.”

Elena's expression softened.

“Then don't fail me twice.”

The Abandoned Facility

They arrived just after sunset.

The building stood behind a rusted gate.

Windows were broken.

Vines covered the walls.

Inside, everything smelled of dust and chemicals.

Adrian carried a flashlight.

Elena followed.

They found laboratories.

Old computers.

Empty cabinets.

Medical equipment.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Children.

Dozens of them.

Each photograph had a number.

No names.

Elena stopped.

“These aren't patients.”

Adrian looked closer.

“They're children.”

Julian's face tightened.

“Why photograph children?”

Samuel found a file.

“The numbers correspond to genetic profiles.”

Elena opened it.

Each child had a family tree.

Some went back generations.

One profile was marked:

SUBJECT A-17.

Another:

SUBJECT A-18.

Then—

SUBJECT A-19.

Elena's heart began pounding.

She opened A-19.

The photograph was of a newborn.

The name had been blacked out.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

Potential Laurent heir.

Elena whispered:

“They were looking for heirs.”

Anthony's Number

Adrian searched the files.

Then stopped.

“I found him.”

Elena rushed over.

Anthony.

Subject:

A-01.

Birth date:

Unknown.

Biological classification:

Laurent male line.

Status:

ACTIVE.

Elena stared.

“Active?”

Adrian nodded.

“Someone updated this recently.”

Julian looked at the timestamp.

“Two weeks ago.”

Silence.

Anthony wasn't merely alive.

Someone had confirmed his existence two weeks ago.

Elena looked at the computer.

“Can we access the file?”

The screen requested a password.

Julian tried his credentials.

Denied.

Adrian tried his.

Denied.

Elena tried her name.

The screen unlocked.

Everyone froze.

The file opened.

One line appeared:

ELENA LAURENT — AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY.

Elena stared.

“How did the system know me?”

Samuel whispered:

“Because someone activated your identity.”

“When?”

The system displayed a date.

Three days before your confrontation with Eleanor.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Someone had been preparing for her return.

Long before she knew she was coming.

The Video

A video file appeared.

Elena clicked it.

A man sat in a dark room.

Anthony.

Older now.

Silver hair.

The same face from the photograph.

He looked directly into the camera.

“My name is not Anthony Laurent.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“I was given that name.”

The recording continued.

“My real name is…”

Static interrupted.

The image flickered.

Then his voice returned.

“…Alexander Laurent.”

Julian stepped backward.

“No.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.”

Anthony continued:

“I am the biological firstborn son of Marcus Laurent.”

Adrian shook his head.

“But Father was Alexander.”

The man in the recording smiled sadly.

“No.”

The screen went black.

A final sentence appeared:

ALEXANDER VALMONT WAS NOT THE SECOND SON.

HE WAS THE SUBSTITUTE.

Then another line appeared.

FIND THE ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORD.

The video ended.

The Brother Who Never Existed

No one spoke.

Finally Julian whispered:

“Our father wasn't Alexander Laurent?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Adrian stared at the blank screen.

“Then who was he?”

Samuel answered quietly:

“Someone took the identity of Alexander Laurent.”

Elena turned toward him.

“Why?”

Samuel looked at the photographs of the children.

“Because the Laurent family didn't inherit through money.”

He pointed toward the files.

“They inherited through blood.”

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“And someone needed the right bloodline.”

Julian suddenly understood.

“That's why the trust was created.”

Elena nodded.

“That's why Father protected us.”

Adrian looked at her.

“And that's why someone has spent decades erasing our family.”

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Approaching.

Adrian switched off the flashlight.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“You should have stayed away.”

Elena recognized it immediately.

The voice from the phone.

The voice from the recording.

The voice that had called her by name.

Anthony.

A figure stepped into the doorway.

Older.

Calm.

Impossibly familiar.

Elena stared at him.

“You're Anthony.”

He smiled.

“No.”

He took another step forward.

“My name is Alexander Laurent.”

Julian's face went white.

The man looked directly at him.

“You've spent your entire life believing you were Alexander's son.”

He smiled sadly.

“You weren't.”

Then he looked at Elena.

“And your father wasn't the man who died in that car.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“What are you saying?”

Alexander's expression became cold.

“I'm saying the man you buried twenty-eight years ago…”

He paused.

“…wasn't your father.”

A deafening silence filled the abandoned facility.

And for the first time, Elena realized the inheritance they had been fighting over might not belong to any of them.

Because the real Laurent heir—

the man who had been erased from history—

May you like

had just walked back into their lives.

And he had come to claim everything.
