Chapter 9 — The Missing Son

Chapter 9 — The Missing Son
The darkness swallowed the estate.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Elena turned toward the window.
The figure outside was gone.
“Where did she go?”
Julian was already moving.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Elena—”
“I've spent my entire life being told where I can and cannot go.”
She grabbed her coat.
“Not anymore.”
Adrian checked the security monitors.
“Someone disabled the exterior cameras.”
Julian looked at him.
“Can you restore them?”
“Give me a minute.”
A minute was all they had.
Because Elena had finally found the person who might know the truth about her birth.
Her sister.
And someone had already found her first.
The Woman at the Gate
They rushed outside.
The iron gate stood open.
Rain had begun falling.
A black sedan was disappearing down the road.
Julian stared after it.
“She was here.”
Elena turned.
“You knew she would come.”
“I suspected.”
“You always suspect everything.”
Julian didn't respond.
Adrian pointed toward the ground.
“Look.”
A silver pendant lay in the mud.
Elena picked it up.
A tiny letter was engraved on it.
E.
She turned it over.
On the back was a date.
06.14.1995
Her birthday.
No.
Their birthday.
Elena closed her fingers around it.
“She wanted me to find this.”
Julian nodded.
“Then she left it deliberately.”
“Why?”
“Because she wants you to follow her.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then we will.”
The File Julian Hid
Back inside, Julian opened another encrypted folder.
Elena's patience was gone.
“You said you gave me everything.”
“I gave you what I could.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
Julian sighed.
“This file was different.”
“Why?”
“Because it concerns our father.”
Elena froze.
“You said you didn't know where he was.”
“I don't.”
“Then what's in the file?”
Julian opened it.
A single photograph appeared.
A man stood outside a railway station.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray-haired.
But Elena recognized him.
She had seen his face hundreds of times in family portraits.
Alexander.
Her father.
Alive.
The photograph had been taken six months ago.
Elena stared at the screen.
“He's alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“That's what I don't know.”
She turned toward Julian.
“Who took the photograph?”
“Your sister.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“She found him?”
“Yes.”
“And she knows where he is?”
“I believe so.”
“Then why hasn't she told me?”
Julian looked at her.
“Because she doesn't trust you yet.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“She doesn't know me.”
“Exactly.”
The Missing Son
Adrian zoomed in on the photograph.
“Wait.”
He pointed at the background.
A sign above the station read:
NEW HAVEN
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“What?”
“I checked that location.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“And?”
“Alexander wasn't there.”
Elena stared.
“Then where did he go?”
Julian opened another document.
A passenger manifest.
One name appeared.
A. Laurent.
Destination:
Boston.
Date:
Six months earlier.
Elena's pulse quickened.
“Boston.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then let's go.”
Julian stopped them.
“There is something you need to know first.”
“What?”
“Alexander wasn't alone.”
The Other Man
The photograph contained a second figure.
A man standing behind Alexander.
His face was partially hidden.
Julian enlarged the image.
Elena stared.
She didn't recognize him.
But Julian did.
“That's Victor.”
Adrian frowned.
“Victor Hale?”
“Yes.”
Elena felt a chill.
“Victor was there?”
“Apparently.”
“Then Father isn't hiding.”
Julian nodded.
“He's running.”
“From Victor?”
“From everyone.”
Elena thought about the fire.
The fake death.
The stolen inheritance.
The missing children.
Everything suddenly seemed connected.
“Maybe Father knows who started the fire.”
Julian looked at her.
“He does.”
The Letter
At 4:40 a.m., a package arrived at the estate.
No courier.
No return address.
Just a black envelope.
Elena opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was unmistakably familiar.
Elena,
If you're reading this, Julian has finally told you enough to make you dangerous.
She looked at her brother.
He lowered his eyes.
The letter continued.
You have been searching for the missing heir.
You have been searching for your sister.
You have been searching for me.
But you have been asking the wrong question.
Elena read faster.
The question is not who inherited the Laurent fortune.
The question is why the Laurent family needed an heir at all.
She stopped.
At the bottom was one final sentence:
Find my son.
Elena looked up.
“My son?”
Julian stared at her.
“I thought I was his son.”
The room went silent.
The Son Who Wasn't Julian
Elena read the letter again.
Find my son.
Not daughter.
Not daughters.
Son.
Someone else.
Adrian whispered:
“There was another child.”
Julian shook his head.
“No.”
“You said your father had no other children.”
“That's what I was told.”
Elena looked at the family records.
“How many children did Alexander supposedly have?”
“Two.”
“Me and you?”
“Yes.”
She looked at the letter.
“Then why would he write this?”
Julian had no answer.
Samuel entered the room.
“What happened?”
Elena handed him the letter.
He read it.
His face changed.
“You know.”
Samuel didn't answer.
“You know who the missing son is.”
He slowly sat down.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice became cold.
“Tell me.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“His name is Daniel.”
Daniel Laurent
Elena stared.
“Daniel?”
Samuel nodded.
“Daniel Laurent.”
“Who is he?”
“Your father's first child.”
Julian stood abruptly.
“That makes no sense.”
Samuel looked at him.
“Alexander had a son before you.”
“Where?”
“Unknown.”
“When?”
“Before he married Isabelle.”
Elena frowned.
“Why didn't anyone know?”
“Because Alexander didn't know where the child went.”
Julian shook his head.
“How can a father lose his own son?”
Samuel looked at him.
“Because the child was taken.”
“By whom?”
“Edward Laurent.”
Elena remembered the name.
The man supposedly dead for fifty years.
Her grandfather's father.
The ghost behind the entire family.
“Why?”
Samuel's answer chilled the room.
“Because Daniel was the only child who carried the original Laurent blood marker.”
The Bloodline
Samuel explained.
Edward Laurent had built the family's fortune around one obsession.
Control.
Not simply financial control.
Biological control.
He believed the Laurent fortune could only survive if the family produced a specific heir.
A child carrying a rare genetic combination.
Daniel had it.
Alexander didn't.
Isabelle didn't.
Elena didn't.
Julian didn't.
The missing sister didn't.
Daniel did.
Elena stared at him.
“Then Daniel is the real heir.”
Samuel nodded.
“To Edward, yes.”
“Where is he?”
“No one knows.”
“That's why he's called the missing son.”
“Yes.”
Julian looked devastated.
“Then why did my father write that letter?”
Samuel answered:
“Because Alexander finally found him.”
The Boy in the Photograph
Elena searched the old photographs again.
One picture caught her attention.
A young Alexander standing beside a little boy.
The boy couldn't have been more than four.
Elena zoomed in.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same distinctive birthmark beneath his left ear.
She looked at Julian.
“That's Daniel.”
Julian stared.
“I've seen this photograph.”
“Where?”
“In Mother's office.”
“Why didn't you recognize him?”
“Because she cut him out.”
Elena looked at the photograph.
Someone had physically removed the child from several copies.
But this one had been preserved.
On the back was a handwritten message:
MY FIRST SON.
Then another line:
THEY WILL NEVER LET HIM COME HOME.
Eleanor's Secret
They searched Eleanor's files.
At dawn, they found a folder hidden beneath the floorboards.
D.L.
Inside were photographs of Daniel at different ages.
Four.
Seven.
Twelve.
Seventeen.
Twenty-one.
The latest photograph had been taken only three months ago.
Elena stared.
“He's alive.”
Julian looked at the date.
“And Mother knew.”
Adrian found a financial record.
Millions had been transferred to an account under the name:
Daniel Reed.
Elena's heart stopped.
“Reed?”
Samuel looked confused.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
“Daniel was registered under another surname.”
“Which one?”
Samuel took the document.
His face went pale.
“Reed.”
Elena slowly turned toward him.
“Your family.”
Samuel said nothing.
“Daniel was raised by your family?”
“Yes.”
“Who raised him?”
Samuel's voice broke.
“My father.”
The Trustee's Greatest Lie
Elena stepped toward Samuel.
“You knew.”
“I knew a boy named Daniel had been placed with my father.”
“You knew he was Alexander's son?”
“No.”
“Don't lie.”
Samuel shook his head.
“I didn't know.”
“Then why did you hide him?”
“I didn't.”
“Someone did.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Samuel looked at Julian.
“Your father.”
Julian frowned.
“Why would Alexander hide his own son?”
“Because Daniel wasn't safe.”
“From Edward?”
“From everyone.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Samuel hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Elena stared at him.
“You're lying.”
“I swear.”
She stepped closer.
“Then call your father.”
Samuel's face became pale.
“My father died twenty years ago.”
“Then who has been receiving the money?”
Samuel looked at the account.
He whispered:
“I don't know.”
The Call
At that exact moment, Samuel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“You should have left the past buried.”
Samuel froze.
Elena immediately recognized the voice.
It was the same voice that had called her before.
Samuel whispered:
“Daniel?”
The caller laughed.
“No.”
Then the line went dead.
Samuel stared at the phone.
Elena asked:
“Who was it?”
He didn't answer.
Adrian took the phone.
“There is a voicemail.”
He played it.
Static.
Then a man's voice:
“Tell Elena her brother isn't the only one who betrayed her.”
The recording ended.
Julian looked at Elena.
“I didn't.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then who did?”
The Woman Returns
A knock came at the front door.
Everyone froze.
Adrian checked the security monitor.
No one was there.
Another knock.
Elena opened the door.
The woman from the photograph stood outside.
Her hair was soaked from the rain.
Her eyes were identical to Elena's.
She looked at Julian.
Then Samuel.
Then Elena.
“I know where Daniel is.”
Elena's breath caught.
“Who are you?”
The woman smiled sadly.
“You already know.”
Elena stared.
“My sister.”
“Yes.”
“What is your name?”
The woman hesitated.
Then answered:
“Isabelle.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Isabelle?”
“Our mother's name.”
“I was named after her.”
“So was I.”
The woman stepped inside.
“I wasn't raised as your sister.”
“Then how were you raised?”
“Like a weapon.”
Elena felt a chill.
“By whom?”
Isabelle looked toward the hallway.
“By Eleanor.”
Julian went rigid.
“She raised you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Isabelle's voice became quiet.
“Because Eleanor believed one day I would kill you.”
The Final Photograph
Isabelle reached into her coat.
She removed a photograph.
Three people stood together.
Alexander.
Daniel.
And a third man.
Elena stared at the third face.
She knew him.
Everyone knew him.
The photograph had been taken recently.
The third man was older, but unmistakable.
Victor Hale.
Elena looked at Isabelle.
“Why are they together?”
“Because Victor didn't kill your father.”
“Then who did?”
Isabelle shook her head.
“He didn't.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“You said the body wasn't his.”
“It wasn't.”
“Then where is Father?”
Isabelle looked at her.
“He's alive.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“With Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Why haven't they come back?”
Isabelle's expression darkened.
“Because they are hiding from the man who controls the trust.”
Elena frowned.
“Anthony?”
“No.”
“Edward?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Isabelle looked directly into Elena's eyes.
“You.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“The trust was never created to protect the Laurent fortune.”
She stepped closer.
“It was created to protect you.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“From whom?”
Isabelle whispered:
“From yourself.”
The Last Page
Before Elena could ask what that meant, the estate's alarm sounded.
All the windows on the eastern side shattered simultaneously.
Adrian pulled Elena down.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Julian dragged Isabelle behind a wall.
Samuel shouted:
“Everyone stay down!”
Then silence.
No second attack.
No gunfire.
Only the sound of rain.
Elena slowly raised her head.
A small black envelope had landed on the table.
She crawled toward it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood beside Alexander.
Daniel.
Victor.
And behind them—
a young woman.
Elena stared.
It was Eleanor.
But she wasn't young enough to be the Eleanor they knew.
The photograph had been taken thirty-two years ago.
Before Elena was born.
On the back, a message had been written:
THE MISSING SON WAS NEVER MISSING.
HE WAS HIDING.
AND THE WOMAN WHO HID HIM…
Elena turned the photograph over.
The final words were written underneath.
…WAS YOUR MOTHER.
Elena looked at Isabelle.
Isabelle's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice barely came out.
“My mother hid Daniel.”
Isabelle nodded.
“Because she knew what Eleanor would do to him.”
“And Father?”
“He helped her.”
“Then why did they leave me?”
Isabelle looked away.
“Because there wasn't enough time.”
Elena felt tears burn her eyes.
“What happened?”
Isabelle whispered:
“They came for you first.”
She paused.
“And when your mother tried to save you…”
Her voice broke.
“…she had to choose which child to take.”
Elena stared at her.
“And she chose me?”
Isabelle shook her head.
“No.”
She looked directly at Elena.
“She chose Daniel.”
Silence.
Elena couldn't breathe.
Then Isabelle placed another photograph in her hand.
A photograph of a little girl.
Standing beside Daniel.
The girl's face was unmistakable.
It was Elena.
But on the back was one final sentence:
May you like
YOU WERE NEVER THE CHILD THEY WERE TRYING TO SAVE.
YOU WERE THE CHILD THEY WERE TRYING TO HIDE.
