Chapter 11 — The Final Betrayal

Chapter 11 — The Final Betrayal
The police sirens grew louder.
For the first time since Daniel had entered the old Brooks estate, Cyrus Vale's composure cracked.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
So did Michael.
So did Serena.
Cyrus turned toward the window.
Blue and red lights flashed across the walls.
His guards shifted uneasily.
Lily stared at Daniel through her tears.
“Daddy…”
Daniel kept his eyes on her.
“I'm here.”
Cyrus slowly looked back.
“You planned this.”
Daniel smiled coldly.
“No.”
Cyrus frowned.
“You expect me to believe this was accidental?”
“I planned something better.”
Daniel pointed toward the ceiling.
“The recording isn't only in this room.”
Cyrus's expression darkened.
“The entire estate is wired.”
Cyrus stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“Every conversation since we entered has been transmitted outside.”
Michael lifted his phone.
“And copied to three separate servers.”
Cyrus looked at Serena.
“You.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Cyrus's eyes narrowed.
“You betrayed me.”
Serena stepped forward.
“You betrayed yourself.”
Cyrus laughed.
“You think Daniel will forgive you?”
Serena didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“This isn't about forgiveness.”
He looked at her.
“It's about what happens next.”
Serena nodded.
The police stormed through the front entrance.
The guards surrendered.
Cyrus remained still.
Then he smiled.
“Do you really think this changes anything?”
Daniel frowned.
Cyrus reached into his jacket.
Michael shouted:
“Hands where we can see them!”
Cyrus slowly raised his hands.
He wasn't holding a gun.
He was holding a photograph.
He tossed it onto the floor.
Daniel looked down.
His blood froze.
The photograph showed his mother.
Standing beside a young man.
Daniel recognized him.
Richard.
But Richard was only seventeen.
And beside him—
Cyrus.
Daniel stared.
“What is this?”
Cyrus smiled.
“Your brother came to me first.”
Daniel looked at Serena.
She closed her eyes.
“No…”
Cyrus continued.
“Before he came to your mother.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“Richard worked for you.”
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Cyrus looked toward Lily.
“He came to me because he wanted to save you.”
Daniel froze.
Cyrus smiled.
“And that was the beginning of the final betrayal.”
Seven Years Earlier
Richard stood outside Cyrus Vale's office.
He was seventeen.
Angry.
Terrified.
And desperate.
His father had just told him that Daniel would be responsible for the family's future.
Richard had discovered the truth about the Brooks empire.
He knew the company wasn't truly theirs.
He knew the Hart family had been robbed.
He knew their mother was trying to expose Edward.
And he knew something else.
Edward intended to eliminate Daniel.
Richard entered Cyrus's office.
“I need your help.”
Cyrus looked up from his desk.
“With what?”
“My brother.”
Cyrus smiled.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Why should I care?”
“Because my father wants him dead.”
Cyrus leaned back.
“And you want me to stop him?”
“Yes.”
“What will you give me?”
Richard hesitated.
“Anything.”
Cyrus smiled.
“That is a dangerous promise.”
“I mean it.”
“Then sign.”
Richard looked at the document.
“What is it?”
“A protection agreement.”
“For Daniel?”
“For your entire family.”
Richard signed.
He didn't read the final clause.
He was seventeen.
He believed he was saving his brother.
He didn't understand that the signature transferred control of a hidden account to Cyrus.
An account containing the original trust evidence.
Cyrus had been waiting for that moment.
And Richard had handed it to him.
Back in the present, Daniel stared at the photograph.
“You knew Richard.”
Cyrus nodded.
“He came to me before anyone else.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your brother begged me not to.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You used him.”
“Yes.”
“And he used me.”
“Yes.”
Cyrus smiled.
“That's what families do.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“That's what cowards do.”
Richard woke in the hospital at 2:17 a.m.
His chest burned.
Every breath hurt.
The first person he saw was a police officer.
The second was Michael.
The third was Daniel.
Richard stared at his brother.
“You found them.”
“Yes.”
“Lily?”
“Safe.”
“Ava?”
“Safe.”
“Noah?”
“Safe.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Relief washed over him.
Then he whispered:
“Cyrus?”
“Arrested.”
Richard opened his eyes.
“Good.”
Daniel pulled a chair beside the bed.
“You lied to me.”
Richard looked away.
“Yes.”
“You worked with Cyrus.”
“I thought I could control him.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
“You worked with Edward.”
“Yes.”
“You helped take my children.”
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?”
Richard took a shaky breath.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it's true.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Richard looked at him.
Daniel continued.
“You were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“You were afraid of Edward.”
“Yes.”
“Of Cyrus.”
“Yes.”
“And of losing everything.”
Richard nodded.
Daniel stood.
“You should have trusted me.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was seventeen.”
Daniel stopped.
“I was a kid.”
Richard's voice broke.
“I watched our father destroy people.”
“I watched him threaten Mother.”
“I watched him threaten you.”
“And I thought if I became useful enough, he'd leave you alone.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What did you do?”
“I became his spy.”
Silence.
“I gave him information.”
“What information?”
“Your location.”
“Your friends.”
“Your business plans.”
“Your relationship with Serena.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“You gave him everything.”
“I thought I was buying time.”
“You gave him ammunition.”
“I know.”
Richard started crying.
“I know.”
Daniel stared at his brother for a long time.
Then he asked:
“What did Mother know?”
Richard looked up.
“Everything.”
“Why didn't she stop you?”
“Because she understood.”
Daniel frowned.
“She knew I was trying to save you.”
Daniel looked away.
Richard whispered:
“But she also knew I'd eventually become what I hated.”
At the Brooks estate, Cyrus was placed inside a police vehicle.
He looked through the window.
Daniel stood outside.
Their eyes met.
Cyrus smiled.
“You think you've won.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You haven't.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me where my mother was held.”
Cyrus's smile faded.
“I don't know.”
“Lie again.”
“I don't.”
“Then who does?”
Cyrus leaned toward the window.
“You're asking the wrong person.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Cyrus whispered:
“Serena.”
Daniel turned.
Serena stood twenty feet away.
Her face had gone completely white.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Is it true?”
She didn't answer.
“Serena.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't want you to know.”
“Know what?”
“That your mother wasn't only hiding from Edward.”
Daniel froze.
“Who was she hiding from?”
Serena whispered:
“Me.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?”
“I was the one who moved her.”
Silence.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After the crash.”
Daniel stared.
“You said she contacted you.”
“She did.”
“And you moved her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Edward was going to kill her.”
Daniel's voice became cold.
“Where did you take her?”
“To a private clinic.”
“Which one?”
“St. Catherine's.”
Michael immediately checked his phone.
Daniel continued.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Serena began crying.
“Because your mother asked me not to.”
Daniel stopped.
“Why?”
“She was afraid you would come looking for her.”
“Why would she be afraid of me?”
Serena shook her head.
“She wasn't afraid of you.”
She looked toward Cyrus's vehicle.
“She was afraid of what would happen if you found her.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Serena whispered:
“She knew the truth about your birth.”
Daniel froze.
“My birth?”
“Yes.”
The world seemed to tilt.
“My birth?”
Serena nodded.
“Your mother wasn't your father's first wife.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“She was his second.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Serena shook her head.
“That's what your father told everyone.”
Daniel waited.
“Your mother was already married when she met Edward.”
Silence.
“To whom?”
Serena looked at him.
“Your mother's first husband.”
Daniel's face went pale.
“Who?”
Serena didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Cyrus Vale.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
The revelation struck harder than any physical blow.
Cyrus.
The man behind the empire.
The man who had controlled Edward.
The man who had manipulated Richard.
The man who had tried to take Lily.
He had been married to Daniel's mother.
Daniel turned toward the police vehicle.
Cyrus was still watching him.
Daniel walked toward him.
The police officer blocked his path.
“Mr. Brooks.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Cyrus!”
Cyrus looked at him.
Daniel shouted:
“You were married to my mother!”
Cyrus smiled.
“Yes.”
Daniel's fists clenched.
“And you are…”
Cyrus interrupted.
“Your father.”
Silence.
The entire world stopped.
Daniel stared.
Cyrus continued:
“Edward stole my wife.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“He stole my company.”
“No.”
“He stole my son.”
Daniel couldn't breathe.
“You're lying.”
Cyrus smiled.
“Ask your mother.”
Daniel turned.
His mother stood near the entrance.
She was crying.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom?”
She couldn't meet his eyes.
“Tell me.”
Silence.
“Tell me he's lying.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel staggered backward.
Cyrus's voice came from behind him.
“Edward wasn't your father.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You are.”
The truth shattered everything Daniel believed about himself.
His name.
His blood.
His family.
His inheritance.
His childhood.
All of it.
Cyrus continued.
“Your mother married me when she was young.”
“She was pregnant with you.”
“Edward wanted the company.”
“He used your birth as leverage.”
Daniel stared.
“Then why did you let him raise me?”
Cyrus's expression darkened.
“Because he threatened to kill your mother.”
Daniel looked toward his mother.
She nodded through tears.
“I thought keeping you with Edward was the only way to keep you alive.”
Daniel's voice broke.
“You let me believe he was my father.”
“Yes.”
“You let me hate him.”
“I know.”
“You let me love him.”
His mother cried harder.
“I know.”
Daniel looked at Cyrus.
“Then why did you come back?”
Cyrus's expression became cold.
“Because the trust belongs to my bloodline.”
Daniel finally understood.
The Brooks-Hart trust.
Samuel.
Lily.
Him.
Cyrus.
The entire inheritance was connected.
But something still didn't make sense.
Daniel turned toward Samuel.
“You knew.”
Samuel nodded.
“I knew.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Mother asked me not to.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because I knew Cyrus would use you.”
Daniel looked back at Cyrus.
“You didn't come for the company.”
Cyrus smiled.
“No.”
“You came for me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Cyrus's eyes became strangely emotional.
“Because you are my son.”
Daniel stared.
For the first time, Cyrus's expression cracked.
“I spent forty years watching Edward pretend you were his.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You abandoned me.”
Cyrus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You chose the empire.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I had no father.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Cyrus looked at him.
“Because it's true.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You all used the same excuse.”
“Protection.”
“Love.”
“Family.”
His voice rose.
“And every one of you destroyed me while claiming you were saving me.”
Silence.
Cyrus looked away.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“I don't know who any of you are anymore.”
Hours later, Daniel stood alone in the hospital corridor.
Richard was asleep.
Serena was with the children.
His mother was resting.
Samuel had disappeared to make arrangements with the lawyers.
And Cyrus was in custody.
Daniel sat down.
His phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
He opened it.
A single photograph appeared.
It showed Edward.
Not in prison.
Not in the police vehicle.
Standing beside a helicopter.
The message underneath read:
You arrested the wrong man.
Daniel's heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
Cyrus was never the mastermind.
Then a final line.
Your father is coming for Lily.
Daniel stood immediately.
He ran toward the children's room.
Empty.
The bed was overturned.
The window was open.
Serena was unconscious on the floor.
Daniel dropped to his knees beside her.
“Serena!”
She slowly opened her eyes.
“Lily…”
Daniel looked around.
“Ava?”
“Noah?”
“Safe…”
She struggled to speak.
“Edward…”
Daniel's blood froze.
“Where is Lily?”
Serena grabbed his wrist.
“He took her.”
Daniel stood.
“How?”
“He knew…”
She coughed.
“He knew the security code.”
Daniel stared.
Only one person knew that code.
His father.
Daniel ran to the window.
Outside, a black helicopter disappeared into the night.
And for the first time, Daniel understood the true meaning of the final betrayal.
Edward hadn't been trying to destroy his empire.
He had been trying to destroy his son.
And now he had taken the one person Daniel would sacrifice everything to save.
His daughter.
Lily.
Daniel stared into the darkness.
His voice became a whisper.
“I'm coming for you.”
Then he turned toward Michael.
“Find the helicopter.”
Michael nodded.
“And this time…”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“We don't arrest him.”
Michael stared at him.
“What do we do?”
May you like
Daniel looked toward the night sky.
“We end it.”
