Chapter 5 — The Inheritance

Chapter 5 — The Inheritance

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't breathe.

He stared at Serena.

Then at the photograph of the little girl.

Then back at Serena.

“My daughter?”

The words barely left his mouth.

Serena nodded.

“Lily is your daughter.”

Daniel laughed once.

It wasn't amusement.

It was disbelief.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to hate me.”

“I already do.”

Serena flinched.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You told me you never had another child.”

“I lied.”

“You told me Lily died.”

“I lied.”

“You let me spend eight years believing I had only two children.”

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Daniel's voice rose.

“Why?”

Serena looked toward the photograph.

“Because your father ordered me to disappear her.”

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he care about a child who wasn't even his?”

Serena's expression changed.

“Because Lily threatened everything he had built.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

Serena walked toward the old desk.

She opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

She handed it to Daniel.

“Your father wrote this before he died.”

Daniel stared at the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Daniel.

His father's handwriting.

He knew it immediately.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you from the consequences of my decisions.

Daniel stopped.

His vision blurred.

He continued.

There are things about our family that you were never meant to know.

You were young when I took control of the company. You believed the fortune came from hard work. That was only partly true.

The Brooks fortune was built on secrets.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Serena stood silently across the room.

He continued reading.

Years ago, I discovered that the company was being threatened from within. Several shareholders were preparing to remove me. I needed an heir who could inherit everything without interference.

Daniel's hands tightened around the paper.

You were my only legitimate successor.

He stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Serena didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

When you met Serena, I realized she knew too much. Her family had been connected to the original shareholders. She could have exposed the structure of the company.

Daniel looked at Serena.

She lowered her eyes.

Then she became pregnant.

Daniel's heart slammed against his ribs.

The child was yours.

He whispered:

“Lily.”

The next line made his hands shake.

I could not allow another heir to exist outside my control.

Daniel looked up.

His voice was almost inaudible.

“He wanted to control Lily?”

Serena nodded.

Daniel continued.

If Serena kept the child, she could eventually use Lily to challenge the inheritance structure. I could not permit that.

Daniel stared at the page.

His father had considered his own granddaughter a threat.

A legal threat.

A financial threat.

Not a child.

Not a human being.

A threat.

I arranged for Lily to disappear.

Daniel stopped reading.

The room became silent.

He lowered the letter.

“You knew?”

Serena nodded.

“He told me Lily would be taken away.”

“You agreed?”

“I was nineteen.”

Daniel stared.

“I was terrified.”

“And you still let him take her.”

Serena's face collapsed.

“I tried to stop him.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Then where was she?”

Serena whispered:

“I gave her to someone I trusted.”

“Who?”

“Martha.”

Daniel froze.

“Martha?”

“She was the only person your father couldn't control.”

Daniel remembered the housekeeper.

Her trembling hands.

Her fear.

Her missing daughter.

“She protected Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Where is Lily now?”

Serena's face changed.

“I don't know.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“You're lying.”

“I swear.”

“Then who has her?”

Serena looked away.

“Richard.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“Because your father gave him the responsibility.”

Daniel stared.

“He was supposed to protect her?”

“No.”

Serena whispered:

“He was supposed to make sure she never became your heir.”

Daniel returned to Michael's office before sunrise.

The letter was on the table.

So was the inheritance agreement.

Michael read it twice.

Then a third time.

“This changes everything.”

Daniel sat across from him.

“How?”

Michael pointed to one section.

“Your father's estate wasn't simply left to you.”

“What?”

“There are conditions.”

Daniel leaned forward.

Michael continued.

“The controlling shares of Brooks Holdings are held in a family trust.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“You knew about the trust.”

“You didn't know about the second beneficiary.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Michael looked directly at him.

“Your first biological child.”

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“Lily.”

“Yes.”

“What's the condition?”

Michael hesitated.

“Lily becomes eligible to claim twenty-five percent of the voting shares when she turns eighteen.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She has ten years.”

“Exactly.”

“And if she dies?”

Michael looked down at the papers.

“The shares revert to the primary heir.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

Daniel understood.

If Lily disappeared permanently, Daniel would inherit everything.

But if Lily survived—

She would become one of the most powerful shareholders in the company.

Daniel stood.

“My father created a reason for people to want her dead.”

Michael nodded.

“And Richard knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Then this was never about Serena.”

Michael said nothing.

“It was never about my marriage.”

Daniel turned.

“It was about Lily.”

That afternoon, Daniel summoned the board.

Twenty-four directors sat around the long conference table.

Richard's seat was empty.

Daniel stood at the head.

For years, this room had been his father's.

Then his.

But now everything felt different.

“I am temporarily suspending all voting authority connected to Richard Brooks.”

The room erupted.

One director stood.

“You can't do that without a board vote.”

Daniel placed the legal documents on the table.

“Yes, I can.”

Michael distributed copies.

“Under the emergency protection clause.”

Murmurs filled the room.

A senior director looked at Daniel.

“What's happening?”

Daniel stared at him.

“Someone has been manipulating the inheritance structure.”

“Who?”

“My father.”

The room fell silent.

“My father established a hidden trust involving a child whose existence was concealed from this company.”

A director whispered:

“An heir?”

Daniel nodded.

“My daughter.”

The room erupted again.

“Your daughter?”

“Daniel, what are you talking about?”

“Does she exist?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Missing.”

That word silenced everyone.

Then one man stood.

Victor Hale.

One of the oldest board members.

He looked terrified.

Daniel noticed.

“Mr. Hale?”

Victor swallowed.

“I need to speak with you privately.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice was firm.

“Speak here.”

Victor looked around.

Then whispered:

“Your father told me Lily would never survive.”

Daniel froze.

“What did you say?”

Victor's face went pale.

“He said she was a problem that would eventually disappear.”

Daniel walked toward him.

“You knew?”

Victor nodded.

“I knew there was a child.”

“Did you know she was mine?”

“No.”

“Who knew?”

Victor looked toward the empty chair.

“Richard.”

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“Anyone else?”

Victor hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother.”

Daniel stopped.

“My mother?”

“She tried to protect the girl.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

“My mother died when I was fourteen.”

Victor nodded.

“She knew.”

That evening, Daniel visited his mother's old house.

It had been locked for years.

The rooms smelled like dust.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Daniel walked through the study.

He remembered being a child here.

His mother had always been gentle.

She had warned him about his father.

But he had never understood why.

Michael searched the room.

“There's something here.”

Behind a painting was a small safe.

Daniel knew the combination.

His mother's birthday.

The lock clicked.

Inside were three things.

A photograph.

A key.

And a letter.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

His breath stopped.

It showed Serena.

Young.

Barely twenty.

Holding a newborn baby.

Lily.

And beside Serena stood Daniel.

Young.

Smiling.

His arm around her shoulders.

Daniel stared.

He had no memory of the photograph.

Michael turned it over.

There was a date.

Eight years ago.

Daniel's face went pale.

“I don't remember this.”

Michael looked at him.

“Why?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Then he saw the letter.

His mother's handwriting.

Daniel,

If you ever find this, you need to know that your father lied to you.

The night Serena gave birth, you were there.

Daniel's heart stopped.

You held your daughter.

He looked at Serena's photograph again.

You loved her immediately.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

But your father arranged for you to be drugged after the birth.

Michael stared.

“Daniel…”

Daniel continued reading.

When you woke, you had been told Serena had lost the baby.

His hands began shaking.

You believed them because your father made sure you did.

Daniel couldn't speak.

His entire memory of Lily had been stolen.

Not by Serena.

Not by Richard.

By his own father.

Then he saw the final sentence.

I tried to expose him. He stopped me.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What happened to my mother?”

Michael didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

His mother had died in a car accident.

A supposed accident.

Eight years ago.

The same year Lily was born.

Daniel dropped the letter.

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“Daniel?”

He stared at the photograph.

His father had stolen his daughter.

His mother had tried to stop him.

Then she died.

And Serena had spent years carrying the secret.

Daniel finally understood why Serena had become the woman she was.

It didn't excuse her.

Nothing could.

But now he knew there had been a larger force behind everything.

A machine built long before he understood he was inside it.

That night, Daniel returned to the hotel.

Ava and Noah were asleep.

He sat beside them.

He watched their peaceful faces.

Then he thought about Lily.

His first daughter.

A little girl he had held once.

A little girl whose existence had been erased from his memory.

A little girl who was somewhere in the world, believing her father had abandoned her.

Daniel covered his face.

He began to cry.

Quietly.

So the children wouldn't wake.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice spoke.

Cold.

Calm.

“You're looking for Lily.”

Daniel immediately stood.

“Who are you?”

“You should stop.”

“Where is my daughter?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your daughter is alive.”

Daniel's heart stopped.

“Where?”

“You'll never find her.”

“Who are you?”

The man laughed softly.

“Someone your father trusted.”

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“Your inheritance.”

Daniel stared at the sleeping children.

“You're not getting anything.”

“You misunderstand.”

The man's voice became colder.

“We don't want your money.”

“We want Lily.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“Why?”

“Because as long as she lives, the inheritance remains divided.”

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Then the man said:

“And there are people willing to kill her to make sure that never happens.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

A second later, a message arrived.

An address.

And one sentence:

Come alone.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then looked at Ava and Noah.

He knew this was a trap.

But if there was even the smallest chance that Lily was there—

He had to go.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Before leaving, he kissed Ava's forehead.

Then Noah's.

He whispered:

“Daddy is coming back.”

But as he stepped into the hallway, he had no idea that someone was already watching from across the street.

A black vehicle sat beneath the trees.

Inside, Richard Brooks lowered a pair of binoculars.

Beside him sat Serena.

She looked terrified.

Richard smiled.

“Let him come.”

Serena whispered:

“He'll find out everything.”

Richard looked toward the hotel.

“That's exactly what we want.”

He started the engine.

“Because once Daniel knows who Lily really is…”

May you like

He smiled.

“…he'll destroy himself trying to save her.”
