Chapter 8 — The Brother Who Betrayed Him

Chapter 8 — The Brother Who Betrayed Him
Daniel had spent his entire life believing that betrayal would be loud.
He imagined it would arrive with shouting.
With threats.
With a gun pointed at his chest.
He never imagined it would sound like his brother laughing beside him at the dinner table.
Richard had been the first person Daniel trusted after their mother died.
His older brother had taught him how to drive.
Had waited outside his school when bullies cornered him.
Had held him at their mother's funeral and promised him:
“I'll never let anyone hurt you.”
Daniel had believed him.
For twenty-five years.
Now, as he listened to Noah's recording, one truth became impossible to escape.
Richard had been lying for most of his life.
And Daniel had been helping him do it.
The private investigation room was silent.
Michael played the recording again.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“We only need Daniel to believe Lily is the key.”
Then Edward.
“The real heir is someone else.”
Daniel sat motionless.
“Play it again.”
Michael did.
Again.
And again.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother's face appeared in his memory.
The way she used to kneel beside his bed.
The way she always locked the study after Richard entered.
The way she once told him:
“If your brother ever asks about the family trust, don't tell him anything.”
Daniel had been twelve.
He hadn't understood.
Now he did.
His mother had known.
She had known Richard couldn't be trusted.
And somehow, she had still allowed Daniel to love him.
Michael stopped the recording.
“We need to find Richard.”
Daniel stood.
“No.”
Michael frowned.
“What?”
“We need him to find us.”
“How?”
Daniel looked at the recorder.
“By letting him believe we don't know.”
Across the city, Richard sat in the back of a black SUV.
Ava sat beside him.
Noah was across from her.
Lily was between them.
Edward sat in front.
Serena stared out the window.
No one spoke.
Finally, Richard broke the silence.
“You made a mistake.”
Serena didn't turn.
“What?”
“You let Daniel hear too much.”
“I didn't.”
“You stayed in that house too long.”
“I was trying to help.”
Richard laughed.
“You always say that.”
Serena finally looked at him.
“You don't understand what Daniel will do when he finds out.”
Richard smiled.
“I know exactly what he'll do.”
“He'll destroy you.”
“No.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“He'll destroy himself.”
Serena shook her head.
“You're wrong.”
Richard turned toward the children.
“Am I?”
Ava pulled Noah closer.
Richard noticed.
“Your father always chooses the wrong people.”
Noah looked at him.
“You're not our uncle.”
Richard smiled.
“I am.”
“No.”
Noah's voice trembled.
“My daddy says family protects you.”
Richard stared at him.
Then looked away.
For the first time, something like guilt crossed his face.
Serena noticed.
“You still have a conscience.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Don't.”
“You do.”
“Stop talking.”
“You love them.”
Richard turned sharply.
“I said stop.”
Serena looked at him.
“You don't have to do this.”
Richard's voice dropped.
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
Richard stared through the window.
“Because if I don't…”
He swallowed.
“…he'll kill us all.”
Serena's face changed.
“Who?”
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel returned to the Brooks headquarters.
He walked directly into the executive conference room.
The board members were already waiting.
Daniel looked at them.
“I need complete access to the family trust.”
A director frowned.
“That trust is sealed.”
“Not anymore.”
“Your father created it.”
“My father also forged documents.”
The room became silent.
Daniel placed the recorder on the table.
“We have evidence of criminal activity connected to the trust.”
The board members exchanged nervous glances.
One man stood.
“Mr. Brooks, if you're accusing members of this board—”
“I'm accusing my family.”
Daniel's voice was flat.
“My father.”
He paused.
“My brother.”
Then:
“My wife.”
Nobody spoke.
Michael distributed copies of the preliminary evidence.
The directors read in silence.
One of them finally whispered:
“Richard has been transferring company funds.”
“How much?”
Michael answered.
“Over thirty million dollars.”
Another director looked shocked.
“Where?”
“Offshore accounts.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
“Find every account.”
“We are.”
“Freeze them.”
“We need authorization.”
“You have it.”
A director looked at him.
“Daniel, if we freeze those accounts and Richard is innocent, the company could face serious liability.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“If Richard is innocent, he can explain it in court.”
Three hours later, Michael found the first connection.
Richard's offshore money had moved through six shell companies.
All of them had one common beneficiary.
A private security firm.
Blackwell Strategic Solutions.
Daniel stared at the name.
“Who owns it?”
Michael opened the corporate registry.
“It's complicated.”
“Make it simple.”
“Officially, nobody.”
Daniel frowned.
“That's impossible.”
“Not if the real owner is hidden behind a trust.”
Michael clicked again.
Then stopped.
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Michael looked at him.
“The trust was established seven years ago.”
“By whom?”
Michael turned the screen around.
Daniel's blood went cold.
Edward Brooks.
Again.
His father.
Daniel whispered:
“He's been funding Richard.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Michael hesitated.
“Nearly eighty million.”
Daniel stared.
“Eighty million?”
“Over seven years.”
“Where did it go?”
Michael opened the transaction history.
The money had been used for surveillance.
Private investigators.
Doctors.
Legal teams.
Security contractors.
And—
Daniel stopped.
“Childcare.”
Michael nodded.
“Several payments.”
“To whom?”
Michael opened the file.
A private facility.
St. Helena Children's Residence.
Daniel's heart pounded.
“Lily?”
“Possibly.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Take me there.”
The facility had closed three years earlier.
Its windows were boarded.
The sign had been removed.
But Michael had arranged access through an old employee.
An elderly woman named Margaret.
She recognized Daniel immediately.
“You're his son.”
Daniel nodded.
“You knew my father?”
“I knew what he did.”
Daniel stopped.
“What do you mean?”
Margaret looked at Michael.
Then at Daniel.
“You're looking for the little girl.”
“Lily.”
She nodded.
“She was here.”
Daniel's heart stopped.
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“How long?”
“Four months.”
“Who brought her?”
Margaret hesitated.
“Your brother.”
Richard.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What happened?”
“He said she was an orphan.”
“She wasn't.”
“I know.”
“Did she know who she was?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Where did he take her?”
Margaret looked toward the old building.
“She wasn't the only child.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“There were five.”
“Five what?”
“Children.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“They were all connected to powerful families.”
Michael stepped forward.
“What kind of connection?”
Margaret lowered her voice.
“Inheritance.”
Daniel felt a chill.
Margaret continued.
“Your father had a system.”
“What system?”
“If a powerful family had an unwanted heir, the child could disappear.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Where?”
“Here.”
“And then?”
“New names.”
“New identities?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at the old building.
“My father was trafficking children.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Not trafficking.”
“What then?”
“Erasing.”
Daniel looked at her.
She continued:
“They didn't sell the children.”
“They erased their identities.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Why?”
“Because dead heirs don't inherit.”
Silence.
Michael asked:
“Where are the other children?”
Margaret looked down.
“Most were sent away.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Lily?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“She was different.”
“How?”
“She had someone protecting her.”
“Who?”
Margaret whispered:
“Your mother.”
Daniel froze.
“My mother?”
“She came here secretly.”
“When?”
“Three times.”
“Why?”
“To check on Lily.”
“Did she know I was her father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel's throat tightened.
“What did she say?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“She said you would come for your daughter one day.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother had believed in him.
Even when he didn't know what had been stolen from him.
Michael discovered a storage room at the back of the facility.
Inside were dozens of old boxes.
One had Daniel's name.
He opened it.
Photographs.
Medical records.
School papers.
A child's drawings.
Lily's.
One drawing showed three people holding hands.
A woman.
A man.
A little girl.
Above them, written in crooked letters:
MY FAMILY
Daniel touched the paper.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Where did she think we were?”
Margaret answered softly:
“She thought you were coming.”
Daniel looked at the drawing.
“I was.”
His voice broke.
“I just didn't know.”
Then Michael found something else.
A small cassette tape.
The label read:
D.B. — PRIVATE
Daniel recognized his mother's handwriting.
He looked at Margaret.
“Do you have a player?”
She nodded.
Minutes later, the tape began.
Static.
Then his mother's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Daniel, if you ever hear this, then I'm probably dead.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother's voice continued.
“Your father believes Lily is the only secret I've hidden.”
A pause.
“He's wrong.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
Michael leaned closer.
“There is another child.”
Daniel's breathing stopped.
His mother continued:
“Another heir.”
Static.
“The child is older than Lily.”
Daniel stared at Michael.
“Older?”
His mother continued.
“I protected this child because your father wanted him erased.”
The tape crackled.
Then:
“Daniel, this child is your—”
The tape abruptly stopped.
Daniel stared at the machine.
“No.”
Michael checked it.
The tape had been damaged.
“Can you repair it?”
“Maybe.”
Daniel grabbed the machine.
“Do it.”
Then Margaret spoke.
“There was something else.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
“Your brother knew.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“Knew about the other heir?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He came here the night your mother died.”
Daniel froze.
“What did he do?”
“He asked me where she had hidden the child.”
Daniel's heart pounded.
“What did you tell him?”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother begged me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She said if Richard found the child, everyone would die.”
That night, Daniel sat alone in his office.
The repaired tape played through headphones.
His mother's voice was faint.
But clearer.
“Daniel…”
Static.
“Your father is not the only person you must fear.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Richard has known about the inheritance for years.”
Static.
“He believes he is protecting you.”
Daniel frowned.
“Protecting me?”
His mother's voice trembled.
“He believes that if he controls the company, he can keep your father from destroying you.”
Daniel stopped.
That didn't sound like Richard.
Then she continued.
“But Richard has become like your father.”
Daniel's heart sank.
“Power changed him.”
A long pause.
“Or perhaps power revealed him.”
Daniel looked down.
His mother whispered:
“Never trust him with your children.”
The recording ended.
Daniel sat in silence.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
Richard's voice.
“You went to St. Helena.”
Daniel didn't respond.
Richard continued.
“You always were curious.”
“Where are my children?”
“Safe.”
“Put them on.”
A pause.
Then Ava's voice.
“Daddy?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Ava.”
“I'm okay.”
“Where are you?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel's heart broke.
“Is Noah with you?”
“Yes.”
“Lily?”
“Yes.”
Daniel heard another voice.
Richard.
“That's enough.”
Ava shouted:
“Daddy, don't trust—”
The line went dead.
Daniel immediately called back.
Nothing.
Michael entered the room.
“We found Richard's location.”
Daniel stood.
“Where?”
Michael placed a satellite image on the desk.
An old private airfield.
Daniel stared.
“He's leaving.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Daniel grabbed his coat.
“Then we stop him.”
At the airfield, Richard stood beside a private jet.
The children were being escorted toward the stairs.
Serena stood nearby.
She looked exhausted.
Edward was already inside the plane.
Richard checked his watch.
“Five minutes.”
Serena whispered:
“This isn't what we agreed.”
Richard looked at her.
“You agreed to keep Daniel distracted.”
“I never agreed to take the children out of the country.”
“You agreed to do whatever was necessary.”
Serena shook her head.
“Where are you taking them?”
Richard smiled.
“Somewhere Daniel will never find them.”
Serena stepped closer.
“You're becoming him.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Maybe I already was.”
Then a voice came from behind them.
“Richard.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel stepped out of the darkness.
Michael stood behind him.
Police vehicles surrounded the runway.
Richard slowly turned.
Daniel looked at his brother.
“You should have remembered something.”
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
Daniel held up Noah's recorder.
“My son is smarter than you.”
Richard's face changed.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared.
Daniel continued.
“We heard everything.”
Edward emerged from the plane.
His expression remained calm.
“You think a recording changes anything?”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
He pointed toward the children.
“But this does.”
Police officers moved forward.
Richard reached for his weapon.
Daniel shouted:
“Don't!”
Richard froze.
Ava screamed.
“Noah!”
Richard looked at the children.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Edward.
Something broke inside him.
He slowly lowered the gun.
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
Richard's voice cracked.
“Because I never wanted to hurt them.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“You hurt everyone.”
Richard looked down.
“I know.”
Edward stepped forward.
“You fool.”
Richard turned toward him.
“You said you'd protect me.”
Edward smiled coldly.
“I protected the family.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“He protected himself.”
Daniel watched his brother.
Richard's face was wet with tears.
“I thought if I controlled the trust, I could keep you safe.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You became the thing you were protecting me from.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
Then Edward's expression changed.
He looked toward the children.
“Enough.”
He reached inside his coat.
Michael shouted:
“Gun!”
Everything happened at once.
Daniel lunged toward the children.
Richard tackled Edward.
A gunshot exploded across the runway.
The children screamed.
The plane's lights flickered.
Then silence.
Daniel looked up.
Edward was on the ground.
Richard was beside him.
Blood spread across Richard's shirt.
Daniel froze.
“Richard!”
His brother looked at him.
A faint smile appeared.
“I told you…”
He struggled to breathe.
“I'd never let anyone hurt you.”
Daniel dropped to his knees.
“Stay with me.”
Richard's eyes closed.
Police rushed forward.
Serena pulled the children away.
Daniel held his brother's hand.
For the first time in twenty-five years, there was no lie between them.
Only blood.
Only regret.
And one final question.
Before Richard lost consciousness, he whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“The real heir…”
Daniel leaned closer.
Richard's eyes opened.
“…isn't a child.”
Daniel froze.
Richard looked toward Edward.
“He's been here all along.”
Then he passed out.
Daniel slowly turned toward his father.
Edward was already smiling.
May you like
Because whatever secret Richard had just revealed—
It was something even Daniel had never imagined.
