Chapter 6 — The Children Disappear

Chapter 6 — The Children Disappear

Daniel knew it was a trap.

He went anyway.

The address led him to an abandoned warehouse on the eastern edge of the city.

There were no lights.

No cars.

No signs of life.

Daniel stopped outside the building and stared through the windshield.

His hand tightened around the steering wheel.

The phone call replayed in his mind.

Your daughter is alive.

That sentence had been enough.

He stepped out.

The warehouse door was already open.

Daniel entered.

“Lily?”

His voice echoed through the darkness.

Nothing.

He took another step.

A light flickered above him.

Then another.

A chair stood in the center of the room.

On it was a photograph.

Daniel picked it up.

Lily.

She was sitting at a table.

Alive.

Terrified.

On the back of the photograph was a message.

You came alone. Good.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Where is she?”

A voice came from the darkness.

“Closer than you think.”

Daniel turned.

Richard stepped into the light.

His older brother looked completely different from the man Daniel had known.

No expensive suit.

No friendly smile.

No carefully controlled expression.

Just cold eyes.

Daniel stared at him.

“You took Lily.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

“I protected her.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“I kept her alive.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don't dress this up as protection.”

Richard smiled.

“You don't understand what your father built.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“You understand nothing.”

He placed a folder on the chair.

“Read it.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents about the family trust.

Then photographs.

Then medical records.

Then something that made Daniel stop breathing.

A birth certificate.

Lily Hart Brooks.

Father:

Daniel Alexander Brooks.

Mother:

Serena Hart.

Daniel stared at his own name.

Richard whispered:

“Your father didn't erase Lily because he hated her.”

“Then why?”

“Because he was afraid of what she would become.”

Daniel looked up.

“She was a baby.”

“She was an heir.”

Richard leaned closer.

“And your father believed heirs could destroy empires.”

Daniel closed the folder.

“Where is she?”

Richard smiled.

“Still asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Why did Serena help him?”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“She didn't.”

Richard laughed.

“She did.”

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

Michael.

Daniel answered.

“Where are you?”

“I’m on my way back.”

Michael's voice was urgent.

“Daniel, listen to me carefully.”

“What happened?”

“We can't find Ava and Noah.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?”

“They were at the hotel.”

Michael continued.

“They were supposed to be with security.”

“Where are they?”

“We don't know.”

Daniel turned toward Richard.

His brother's expression had changed.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Daniel whispered:

“You took my children.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Richard looked at him.

“Serena.”

Daniel drove like a man possessed.

He ignored every traffic light.

Every call.

Every warning.

His mind had become one terrifying sentence.

Ava and Noah are gone.

When he reached the hotel, police cars surrounded the entrance.

Michael was waiting.

Daniel jumped out.

“Where are they?”

Michael shook his head.

“Security footage shows Serena entering the hotel at 2:13 p.m.”

Daniel froze.

“With the children?”

“Yes.”

“Why did no one stop her?”

“She had a court order.”

Daniel stared.

“What court order?”

Michael handed him a document.

Temporary supervised visitation.

Signed that morning.

Daniel's blood went cold.

“That wasn't there yesterday.”

“I know.”

“Who approved it?”

“The judge's office.”

“Who requested it?”

Michael looked at him.

“Serena's attorney.”

Daniel crushed the paper in his fist.

“She planned this.”

Michael nodded.

“Apparently.”

Daniel walked toward the security room.

“Show me.”

The footage began.

Ava and Noah were sitting in the hotel lobby.

A woman approached.

Serena.

She crouched.

Spoke to them.

Then Ava took her hand.

Noah followed.

Daniel's face tightened.

“Stop.”

The footage froze.

“Zoom in.”

Michael did.

Daniel stared.

Ava wasn't willingly following Serena.

She was looking behind her.

Fearful.

Someone had been standing off-camera.

“Turn it around.”

The footage shifted.

A man appeared for half a second.

Daniel recognized him.

Richard.

Daniel's heart dropped.

“They're working together.”

Michael nodded.

“Looks that way.”

“No.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Richard was with me at the warehouse.”

Michael turned.

“What?”

“He wanted me there.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“It was a distraction.”

He stepped back.

“While I was chasing Lily…”

His voice broke.

“They took Ava and Noah.”

At 7:12 p.m., Daniel received a video.

Ava and Noah were sitting together.

They looked frightened.

But unharmed.

Serena sat behind them.

Daniel watched.

Ava looked directly into the camera.

“Daddy…”

Daniel's chest tightened.

Then Serena spoke.

“If you want them back, listen carefully.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“You will stop looking for Lily.”

His jaw tightened.

“You will sign over your voting rights in Brooks Holdings.”

He stared at the screen.

“And you will transfer control of the family trust.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

Serena continued.

“Do those three things, and your children come home.”

Daniel whispered:

“Where are they?”

Serena smiled.

“You don't need to know.”

Ava suddenly shouted:

“Daddy, don't!”

Serena grabbed her shoulder.

Daniel's entire body went rigid.

“Don't touch her.”

Serena looked into the camera.

“You have twenty-four hours.”

The video ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

Michael spoke softly.

“They won't hurt them.”

Daniel turned.

“You don't know that.”

“We have to assume they want the trust.”

Daniel slammed his fist against the desk.

“They're using my children.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

He remembered Ava's face.

Noah's trembling hands.

Then Lily's photograph.

Three children.

Three victims.

All connected to one family.

At midnight, Daniel received another message.

This time from Richard.

Choose.

A photograph followed.

Ava and Noah asleep on a mattress.

Beside them was Lily.

Daniel's breath stopped.

His daughter was alive.

She was sitting beside Ava.

Holding her hand.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Lily looked frightened.

But Ava was protecting her.

Even now.

His seven-year-old daughter was protecting a little girl she had never met.

Daniel whispered:

“My children…”

Michael looked at him.

“What?”

“They're together.”

He showed him the picture.

Michael stared.

“Lily.”

Daniel nodded.

“They brought her to them.”

“Why?”

“Because they know I won't sacrifice one child to save another.”

Michael's face hardened.

“This is no longer about money.”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“No.”

“It isn't.”

The next morning, Daniel called Serena.

She answered immediately.

“You're learning.”

Daniel's voice was cold.

“You have my children.”

“Yes.”

“Bring them home.”

“Sign the documents.”

“No.”

Silence.

Serena sighed.

“You haven't changed.”

“You don't know me.”

“I know you better than anyone.”

“You knew me when you lied to me.”

“I knew you when you loved me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That man is dead.”

“No.”

Serena's voice softened.

“He's the man who held Lily the night she was born.”

Daniel froze.

“You remember?”

“I remember everything.”

“Then tell me.”

Serena was silent.

Daniel pressed.

“Tell me what happened that night.”

A long pause.

Then:

“You were there.”

Daniel's heart pounded.

“You held her.”

“I know.”

“You cried.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Why don't I remember?”

“Your father made sure you wouldn't.”

“How?”

Serena's voice trembled.

“He had doctors waiting.”

Daniel felt sick.

“They gave you something.”

“Why?”

“Because you refused to give Lily up.”

Daniel couldn't speak.

Serena continued.

“You fought your father.”

“What happened?”

“You told him you would leave the company.”

Daniel stared at the wall.

“I did?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He threatened to destroy you.”

“And you?”

“I begged him to stop.”

Serena began crying.

“I thought I could protect you.”

Daniel's voice hardened.

“You failed.”

“I know.”

“You let them take my daughter.”

“I know.”

“You let them hurt my children.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Daniel asked:

“Where are they?”

Serena whispered:

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard is listening.”

Daniel froze.

He looked around the room.

Michael immediately checked the phone.

“Daniel…”

Serena's voice became urgent.

“Don't trust the house.”

“What?”

“Someone inside your security team is working for Richard.”

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Michael looked at him.

“She's telling the truth.”

“How do you know?”

“Because your security system was accessed again.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“When?”

“Three minutes ago.”

“From where?”

Michael looked at the screen.

Then slowly raised his eyes.

“From inside this building.”

Daniel turned.

Every person in the room suddenly became a suspect.

At 10:30 that morning, Daniel received the final message.

Come to the old family estate. Alone.

Attached was a photograph.

Ava.

Noah.

Lily.

Standing together.

And behind them—

Serena.

Daniel stared at the image.

Something was wrong.

He zoomed in.

There was a window behind Serena.

Outside the window was a mountain range.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The old Brooks estate.

A property his father had supposedly sold fifteen years ago.

Michael saw it too.

“That place doesn't exist anymore.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It does.”

“How do you know?”

“My father used to take me there.”

“Why would Richard bring them there?”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then noticed something else.

A small mark on the wall behind the children.

A carved symbol.

His mother's symbol.

Daniel suddenly remembered the letter.

The safe.

The hidden room.

The warning.

He whispered:

“My mother knew.”

Michael looked at him.

“Knew what?”

“That Lily would one day be taken there.”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“We're going.”

Michael shook his head.

“You can't go alone.”

“I won't.”

“But Serena demanded—”

“I don't care.”

Daniel looked toward the photograph one final time.

“My children are in that house.”

He walked toward the door.

“And this time…”

His expression hardened.

“I am bringing them home.”

Twenty minutes later, the old estate came into view.

Dark.

Abandoned.

Surrounded by trees.

Daniel's car stopped at the gate.

Michael stepped out.

No security.

No police.

No backup.

Only silence.

Then the estate lights suddenly came on.

One by one.

The front doors opened.

Ava appeared.

Then Noah.

Then Lily.

Daniel's heart nearly broke.

They were alive.

But someone stood behind them.

Richard.

He held a gun.

Daniel stopped.

Richard smiled.

“Welcome home, little brother.”

Then another figure stepped out of the shadows.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

His father.

Edward Brooks.

Alive.

May you like

And smiling.

“It's time,” Edward said, “for you to learn what your inheritance really cost.”
