Chapter 10 — The Family Behind the Lie

Chapter 10 — The Family Behind the Lie

The baby cried again.

A thin, frightened sound beneath the stone floor.

Elena turned toward it.

"Noah."

She started forward.

Celeste stepped between us.

"Don't."

Elena stopped.

"Where is my son?"

Celeste smiled.

"Still asking the wrong question."

I raised my weapon.

"Move."

Celeste didn't even blink.

"You won't shoot me."

"Try me."

"You need me alive."

She was right.

I hated that she was right.

Celeste looked toward the altar.

"The document you're holding is only the beginning."

I glanced down.

The forged signature beneath Elena's name seemed to burn through the paper.

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything."

"You forged her signature."

"No."

She smiled.

"Your family did."

I looked at Elena.

She was staring at the document as if it were something poisonous.

Celeste continued.

"The Vale family has been forging signatures for generations."

"Why?"

"Because ownership is easier to create on paper than in blood."

She tapped the document.

"And your family has always understood one thing better than anyone else."

"What?"

"People believe documents."

The Family Tree

Celeste walked to the wall.

Behind an old tapestry was a massive family tree.

I had never seen it before.

Names covered the stone.

Generations.

Marriages.

Births.

Deaths.

Disappearances.

At the very top was one name:

Lucien Vale.

My great-great-grandfather.

Under him were three branches.

The Vale family.

The Sloane family.

The Marlowe family.

They had been connected for generations.

Not through friendship.

Through contracts.

Celeste pointed to the branches.

"Your family controlled the money."

She pointed to the Sloanes.

"Mine controlled the courts."

Then the Marlowes.

"Elena's family controlled the information."

I looked at Elena.

She nodded slowly.

"That's why they needed all three families."

Celeste smiled.

"Exactly."

I looked at the tree again.

"Where are the Vandermarks?"

Celeste's expression changed.

"You're looking at them."

I frowned.

She pointed to another name.

Vandermark.

Then another.

Sloane-Vandermark.

I looked at her.

"Your mother married into the Sloanes."

"Yes."

"Your father?"

"Sloane."

"So Celeste Vandermark isn't your real name."

"No."

She smiled.

"Isabelle Sloane was only the name they gave me."

"Then what is your real name?"

She leaned toward me.

"Isabelle Vale."

Silence.

Elena whispered:

"She's family."

Celeste smiled.

"Now you understand."

The Child Beneath the Chapel

Another cry came from beneath the floor.

Elena rushed toward the altar.

This time Celeste didn't stop her.

Elena found a small iron handle beneath the carpet.

She pulled.

A stone panel opened.

A staircase descended.

I went after her.

The air below was cold.

At the bottom was a small room.

A crib stood in the center.

Empty.

Elena froze.

"No."

I searched the room.

"Where is he?"

A blanket lay on the floor.

Still warm.

Someone had been holding him.

I picked it up.

It smelled like baby powder.

Elena covered her mouth.

"They moved him."

A speaker crackled overhead.

Celeste's voice echoed through the room.

"Of course."

I looked up.

"You think I'd leave the heir somewhere you could reach him?"

I shouted:

"Where is my son?"

Her answer came calmly.

"With his family."

I felt my blood boil.

"We are his family."

"No."

She laughed.

"You are his parents."

A pause.

"But the Circle is his inheritance."

The Family Behind the Lie

We returned upstairs.

Celeste was gone.

Only the document remained.

Adrian examined it.

"This isn't a normal transfer."

"What do you mean?"

"The language."

He pointed to a paragraph.

"This isn't transferring custody."

I read it.

THE HEIRSHIP SHALL PASS TO THE CUSTODIAN OF THE MERIDIAN TRUST UPON DECLARATION OF PARENTAL INCAPACITY.

I stared.

"Parental incapacity?"

Adrian nodded.

"They're trying to declare us unfit."

Elena looked at me.

"How?"

I understood immediately.

"The recordings."

Adrian nodded.

"They've been collecting evidence."

My anger turned cold.

"The cameras."

"Exactly."

"They recorded everything."

"Arguments."

"Your daughter's incident."

"My temper."

"Your financial problems."

"Anything they can use."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"And the ice-water incident."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"Celeste needed evidence that you were unstable."

I remembered the day I came home early.

Ilaria soaked.

Shaking.

Celeste beside her.

I had lost control.

I had threatened her.

I had removed my ring.

Celeste had recorded everything.

My daughter's suffering had been part of a plan.

I felt sick.

"She wanted me to look violent."

"Yes."

"So she could take Ilaria."

"And Noah."

The Woman Who Betrayed Everyone

We returned to the estate before dawn.

My mother was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

Elena stopped when she saw her.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Elena said:

"You knew."

My mother lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

"You knew what they were doing to Noah."

"I knew they wanted him."

"You let them take him."

"I was trying to buy time."

"With my son?"

My mother's face crumpled.

"I had no choice."

Elena stepped closer.

"You always say that."

My mother looked at her.

"Because you don't know what I sacrificed."

Elena's voice became cold.

"Neither do you know what I sacrificed."

Silence.

I stood between them.

"Enough."

Both looked at me.

"Tell me the truth."

My mother sat down.

"I was married to your father for twenty-three years."

She looked at Elena.

"And I was the one who asked him to recruit her."

I stared.

"What?"

Elena's face went white.

My mother continued.

"Your father wanted Elena eliminated."

"I stopped him."

"Why?"

"Because I knew she could protect you."

She looked at me.

"When you were five, I realized the Circle intended to make you their successor."

"So you brought Elena into my life."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I needed someone inside the organization who would eventually choose you over them."

I looked at Elena.

She was crying.

"And she did."

The First Betrayal

My mother revealed the truth.

Elena had been recruited when she was sixteen.

She had been trained by the Marlowes.

Surveillance.

Deception.

Financial manipulation.

Information gathering.

She was supposed to become a perfect Circle operative.

But my mother had secretly assigned her a different mission.

Protect Daniel.

Watch Daniel.

Keep him alive.

And if necessary...

Help him escape.

"Then why did Elena marry me?"

I asked.

My mother answered:

"Because by then, she loved you."

I looked at Elena.

She whispered:

"I stopped pretending a long time before you noticed."

I remembered our first date.

Her laugh.

Her nervousness.

The way she always looked at me as though she was trying to memorize my face.

I had thought it was love.

It had been.

But it had started as something else.

That truth hurt.

Yet somehow, it made the love more real.

The Second Betrayal

My mother wasn't finished.

"Victor discovered what I had done."

"What did he do?"

"He took Ilaria."

I froze.

"That's impossible."

"She was four months old."

I looked at Elena.

She nodded.

"I remember."

My mother continued.

"Victor threatened to kill her unless Elena returned to the Circle."

"So Elena obeyed."

"Yes."

"And then?"

"She disappeared for three years."

I looked at Elena.

"You were gone?"

She nodded.

"I was trying to get Ilaria back."

My daughter had never known any of this.

She had grown up believing her mother had simply vanished.

But Elena had spent years fighting to return.

My mother wiped her eyes.

"When Elena finally escaped, she came back pregnant."

I stared.

"With Noah."

"Yes."

"Victor knew?"

"Eventually."

"And that's when everything started."

My mother nodded.

The Secret Partnership

Adrian entered the room.

"We have a problem."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Marcus is missing."

Vanessa followed behind him.

"What?"

"He disappeared thirty minutes ago."

"Where?"

"Solmere."

My blood ran cold.

"Why?"

Adrian handed me a phone.

There was a video.

Marcus was tied to a chair.

Blood on his face.

Celeste stood behind him.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Daniel."

She smiled.

"You wanted your son."

She leaned toward Marcus.

"Now you can have him."

Marcus looked up.

"Don't."

Celeste ignored him.

"Come to the old Vale factory."

"When?"

"Tonight."

"Alone."

She paused.

"And bring the original Meridian ledger."

Adrian whispered:

"She doesn't mean the red suitcase."

"What does she mean?"

"The ledger beneath the house."

I remembered Chapter after chapter of secrets hidden beneath my family.

Every answer created another question.

I looked at my mother.

"Where is it?"

She didn't answer.

"Mom."

Her eyes closed.

"Your father destroyed it."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"I found a copy."

He pulled a small black book from inside his coat.

The Meridian ledger.

Celeste knew about it.

Which meant she knew we had it.

The Trap

That evening, I prepared to leave.

Elena blocked the doorway.

"You're not going alone."

"She asked me to."

"I don't care."

"If she thinks I'm not alone, she'll kill Marcus."

"Then take me."

"No."

"Daniel."

"I already lost you once."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm not losing you again."

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to decide that."

She touched my face.

"I know."

"Then don't ask me to stay."

"I won't."

She kissed me.

A quiet, desperate kiss.

Then she whispered:

"Come back."

I nodded.

"I will."

But neither of us believed the promise was guaranteed.

The Factory

The old Vale factory stood beside the river.

Abandoned.

Dark.

Silent.

I walked inside carrying the ledger.

"Celeste."

My voice echoed.

She appeared above me on a metal balcony.

Marcus was beside her.

Alive.

Barely.

And beside Marcus stood a man holding a baby.

My heart stopped.

"Noah."

The baby stirred.

I took one step forward.

The man lifted him higher.

Celeste smiled.

"Don't."

I stopped.

She looked at the ledger.

"Throw it."

I placed it on the floor.

"Let Marcus go."

"First."

She nodded toward the man.

He handed Noah to another person.

I couldn't see the face.

The figure disappeared into the shadows.

My heart pounded.

"Where are they taking him?"

"Somewhere safe."

"Give him to me."

Celeste laughed.

"You still don't understand."

She walked downstairs.

"The ledger doesn't belong to the Vale family."

She picked it up.

"It belongs to the heir."

She looked toward the darkness.

"And the heir doesn't belong to you."

I raised my weapon.

Celeste smiled.

"Go ahead."

She pointed behind me.

I turned.

The factory doors were closing.

Men surrounded me.

At least twenty.

And at the center of them stood Victor Sloane.

Alive.

He smiled.

"Hello, Daniel."

I stared at him.

"You're supposed to be dead."

"So was your father."

Victor walked toward me.

"Yet here we are."

He looked at the ledger.

Then at me.

"You finally found your family."

I tightened my grip.

Victor smiled.

"And now you're going to learn why they lied to you."

He raised his hand.

The lights came on.

Every wall was covered with photographs.

Photographs of me.

Elena.

Ilaria.

Noah.

My mother.

Adrian.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

And at the center of the wall was one photograph that made my blood freeze.

It showed my father holding a newborn baby.

Not me.

Not Noah.

Another child.

A little girl.

On the back was a date.

Twenty-eight years ago.

And beneath it, one sentence:

THE FIRST HEIR WAS NEVER DANIEL.

I looked at Victor.

"Who is she?"

Victor smiled.

"Your sister."

I felt the room tilt.

"She's alive."

Victor nodded.

"And she is the person who has been controlling this entire family from the beginning."

The lights suddenly went out.

A woman's voice came from somewhere behind me.

Soft.

Familiar.

"Hello, Daniel."

I turned.

And heard the voice I had spent eighteen months waiting to hear.

My mother's voice.

But my mother was standing beside me.

She looked terrified.

Then she whispered:

"Don't turn around."

I did.

A woman stepped from the darkness.

She had my mother's face.

My mother's voice.

May you like

And in her arms...

was my son.
