Chapter 11 — The Trap

Chapter 11 — The Trap

The woman holding my son smiled.

I couldn't move.

For one impossible second, I thought I was looking at my mother.

Same face.

Same gray eyes.

Same faint scar beside her eyebrow.

Even the way she held Noah was familiar.

But my mother was standing beside me.

And she was trembling.

"Daniel," she whispered.

"Don't go near her."

The woman holding my son laughed softly.

"Still giving orders?"

My mother stepped forward.

"Let him go."

The woman tightened her arms around Noah.

"Why?"

"Because this was never supposed to involve him."

"Everything involves him."

She looked down at the baby.

"He's the reason all of you lied."

I stared at her.

"Who are you?"

She smiled.

"You already know."

"No."

"Then ask your mother."

I turned.

My mother's face had gone completely white.

She whispered one name.

"Isadora."

The woman smiled.

"Hello, Mother."

The Daughter Who Never Existed

The factory seemed to disappear around me.

"That's my sister?"

Isadora looked at me.

"Half-sister."

Victor laughed from behind us.

"Don't make it sound sentimental."

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

"Of course."

"Everyone knew except me."

Victor smiled.

"That's how families survive."

I looked back at Isadora.

"Why have you been hiding?"

She walked slowly forward.

"Because your mother wanted me dead."

My mother shook her head.

"No."

"You gave them my name."

"To save you."

"You gave them my location."

"I was forced."

Isadora's expression hardened.

"You always say that."

I had heard those words before.

From Elena.

From Vanessa.

From my mother.

Every betrayal came wrapped in the same excuse.

Fear.

Protection.

Sacrifice.

I was beginning to hate those words.

"What happened to you?"

I asked.

Isadora looked at me.

"I was born twenty-eight years before you."

"Why did everyone think you were dead?"

"Because I was supposed to inherit the Circle."

I stared.

"The first heir."

She nodded.

"Your grandfather chose me."

"Then why did they choose me?"

"Because I disappeared."

"Where?"

She smiled bitterly.

"Your father sent me away."

The First Heir

Isadora told me the story.

When she was seventeen, she discovered what the Meridian Circle really was.

She refused to inherit it.

She tried to expose it.

My grandfather ordered her killed.

My father couldn't do it.

So he faked her death.

She escaped.

But she didn't disappear completely.

She watched.

She waited.

She built her own network.

And eventually, she returned.

"When?"

"Six years ago."

The same year my brother Ewan died.

I looked at her.

"Did you know Ewan?"

She nodded.

"He found me."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"Ewan knew I was alive."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Of you?"

"No."

She looked toward Victor.

"Of him."

Victor's smile disappeared.

The Fire at Pier 44

I knew the answer before I asked.

"Ewan's death wasn't an accident."

"No."

"Victor killed him."

Victor stepped forward.

"Your brother betrayed us."

"What did he discover?"

"Something he shouldn't have."

"What?"

Isadora answered.

"The original ledger."

I looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

"Ewan found proof that the Circle had been manipulating the Vale inheritance."

"How?"

"He found the first contract."

"The one with the forged signature."

"Yes."

I looked at Victor.

"And he tried to expose you."

"He tried to destroy the family."

I laughed bitterly.

"You mean he tried to save it."

Victor's face hardened.

"Your brother made his choice."

"And you killed him."

"He chose the fire."

I stepped forward.

"You set the fire."

Victor smiled.

"Prove it."

I wanted to hit him.

But Noah was still in Isadora's arms.

I couldn't risk it.

The Baby

I looked at my son.

"Give him to me."

Isadora shook her head.

"Not yet."

"He's my son."

"He's the legal heir."

"He's a baby."

"To you."

She looked down at him.

"To them, he's a kingdom."

Noah began crying.

Ilaria's voice suddenly echoed in my mind.

Mommy didn't leave.

I understood now.

Children had always been used as leverage in my family.

Ilaria.

Noah.

Even me.

"Why are you doing this?"

Isadora looked at me.

"Because I need you."

"For what?"

"The Archive."

I stared.

"That's all this is?"

"No."

She smiled.

"I need your blood."

I felt a chill.

"What?"

"The original trust requires three signatures."

She looked at Victor.

"One from the Sloane line."

Then at my mother.

"One from the original Vale line."

Then at me.

"The living heir."

I shook my head.

"I'm not signing anything."

"You will."

"No."

She smiled.

"Because I have something you want."

She lifted Noah slightly.

My fists tightened.

"Don't threaten my son."

"I'm not."

She looked at him.

"I'm reminding you what happens when people refuse."

Elena Walks In

The factory doors opened.

Elena entered.

She looked at me.

Then Noah.

Her face shattered.

"My baby."

Isadora turned.

"Elena."

My wife froze.

"You."

"You remember me."

"I remember everything."

Isadora smiled.

"You were always difficult."

Elena stepped forward.

"Give me my son."

"No."

"Please."

"Still begging."

Elena's eyes hardened.

"I've killed men for less than what you've done."

Isadora laughed.

"You've changed."

"Motherhood does that."

Isadora glanced at me.

"Does he know?"

Elena stopped.

"Know what?"

"That you were supposed to kill him?"

Silence.

I looked at Elena.

"What?"

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel..."

Isadora smiled.

"You didn't tell him?"

"Tell me what?"

Elena whispered:

"When I first met you, I was ordered to kill you."

I couldn't breathe.

"What?"

"Your father believed you were becoming a threat."

"So you were sent to kill me."

"Yes."

"And you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

She looked at me.

"Because I loved you."

I didn't know whether to cry or scream.

Every truth in my life seemed to arrive too late.

The Trap Closes

Victor suddenly raised his hand.

The factory doors locked.

Metal shutters dropped over the windows.

Adrian drew his weapon.

Men surrounded us.

Victor smiled.

"Now."

The lights came on.

A projector displayed a series of recordings.

Me shouting.

Me threatening Celeste.

Me losing control.

Ilaria crying.

Elena disappearing.

Financial transfers.

Arguments.

Every moment had been carefully edited.

I looked at Adrian.

"They're building a case."

"Yes."

"Against me."

"And Elena."

Victor nodded.

"The courts will see two unstable parents."

He pointed toward Noah.

"And one innocent child."

I understood.

"They want custody."

"Not custody."

Victor smiled.

"Control."

He walked closer.

"By tomorrow morning, the court will receive evidence proving you kidnapped your own son."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

"Your forged signature."

The document.

The one with Elena's name.

Victor continued.

"Your bank accounts will show suspicious transfers."

My accounts.

"Your security footage will show you threatening Celeste."

The ice-water incident.

"Your wife will appear to have fled."

Elena's fake passport.

"And your daughter will testify that you are violent."

Ilaria.

I turned toward my daughter.

She wasn't there.

My heart stopped.

"Where is Ilaria?"

Victor smiled.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"With someone she trusts."

My phone rang.

I answered.

A video appeared.

Ilaria was sitting in a room.

Alone.

A woman was behind her.

The camera moved.

My daughter looked directly at me.

"Daddy."

I could barely speak.

"I'm here."

She whispered:

"Don't give them the book."

I looked at the ledger in my hand.

Then the video ended.

The Woman Behind the Camera

I turned toward Victor.

"Who has her?"

He smiled.

"You'll find out."

My mother stepped forward.

"You promised."

Victor looked at her.

"I promised nothing."

She suddenly pulled a small gun from beneath her coat.

She aimed it at Victor.

Everyone froze.

Victor laughed.

"You won't."

She fired.

The bullet struck the floor beside his foot.

Chaos erupted.

Adrian fired back.

Men scattered.

Elena ran toward Isadora.

I rushed forward.

Isadora pulled Noah close.

"Stay back!"

I stopped.

Then someone tackled Victor.

Marcus.

He had escaped.

He slammed Victor into a metal table.

"You killed my brother."

Victor struggled.

"Your brother chose his fate."

Marcus hit him again.

I ran toward Noah.

Isadora looked at me.

For a moment, we stared at each other.

Then she handed him to me.

"Take him."

I froze.

"Why?"

"Because I never wanted him."

"Then why?"

"To force your mother to tell the truth."

She looked at my mother.

"She knows where Ilaria is."

My mother stepped forward.

"Daniel."

I turned.

She was crying.

"I'll get her."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I'm going."

"I know."

She took my hand.

"Then listen carefully."

The Real Trap

My mother whispered:

"The factory is a decoy."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"They wanted you here."

"Why?"

"Because while you're here..."

She looked at the floor.

"...they are searching your house."

"For what?"

"The original key."

"What key?"

"The one that opens the Archive."

I stared at the ledger.

"You already have it."

"No."

She shook her head.

"That's only the copy."

"Then where is the real key?"

My mother looked at Elena.

Elena's face went pale.

"I know."

I turned.

"Where?"

She touched the necklace around her neck.

"The key I gave Ilaria."

I froze.

"What?"

"She has it."

My mother whispered:

"And that's why they took her."

The Escape

The factory erupted into chaos.

Sirens sounded outside.

Police.

Too many.

Victor smiled despite being restrained.

"You think this is over?"

I looked at him.

"You've lost."

He laughed.

"No."

He nodded toward the doors.

"The police aren't here for me."

The doors burst open.

Officers stormed inside.

One pointed directly at me.

"Daniel Vale!"

I raised my hands.

"Put the baby down!"

Elena shouted:

"He's innocent!"

Another officer raised a file.

"We have a warrant for your arrest."

I looked at Victor.

He smiled.

The trap had worked.

They had everything.

Forged documents.

Edited footage.

Fake financial records.

And witnesses.

I had one choice.

Run.

Or surrender.

I looked at Noah.

Then at Elena.

Then at Ilaria's empty photograph on my phone.

I whispered:

"I'm sorry."

Elena understood.

"Don't."

I handed Noah to her.

Then I stepped toward the officers.

"I'll go."

Elena grabbed my arm.

"No."

I whispered:

"If I run, they take both children."

She shook her head.

"I won't let them."

I kissed her forehead.

"Find Ilaria."

Then I surrendered.

The handcuffs closed around my wrists.

As the officers led me away, Victor leaned close.

"You finally understand."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He smiled.

"The trap was never designed to catch you."

He nodded toward Elena.

"It was designed to separate your family."

Then his smile disappeared.

"Because once you're alone..."

He whispered:

"You're easy to control."

The Last Thing I Saw

As I was pushed into the police car, I looked back.

Elena stood on the factory steps.

Noah in her arms.

Adrian beside her.

My mother crying.

Marcus bleeding.

And somewhere in the darkness...

Ilaria was still missing.

Then I saw something that made my blood freeze.

A red suitcase sat beside Elena.

She hadn't brought it.

I knew that.

Someone had placed it there.

Elena opened it.

She looked inside.

Then looked directly at me.

Her expression turned to terror.

The police car door slammed shut.

Through the glass, I saw her mouth one word.

"Daniel."

I couldn't hear her.

But I knew what she said.

"Run."

And for the first time that night, I understood the truth.

Victor had never wanted the ledger.

He had never wanted the Archive.

He hadn't even wanted Noah.

Those were distractions.

May you like

The real target was me.

And the trap had already closed.
