Chapter 9 — The Forged Signature

Chapter 9 — The Forged Signature
Elena was standing three feet away from me.
Alive.
Breathing.
Crying.
And somehow, in that moment, the only thing I could think about was the note on the floor.
NOW FIND YOUR SON.
I looked at her.
"Where is Noah?"
Her face collapsed.
"I don't know."
I stared at her.
"You don't know?"
She shook her head.
"I thought he was safe."
"With whom?"
"My mother."
I felt the blood leave my face.
"Your mother?"
Elena nodded.
"She took him the night I disappeared."
I looked toward the empty doorway where my mother had vanished.
Then back at Elena.
"You're saying my mother has our son?"
"No."
Elena's voice trembled.
"Not your mother."
She swallowed.
"My mother."
I froze.
"Your mother is not my mother."
Elena shook her head.
"Daniel, the woman you called Mom was never the woman who raised me."
I couldn't understand.
"Then who is she?"
Elena looked toward the red rose.
"That's what the signature will tell us."
The Document
Adrian came downstairs moments later.
He stopped when he saw Elena.
For several seconds, the two of them simply stared at each other.
Then Adrian crossed the room.
He hugged her.
Hard.
Elena broke down in his arms.
"I thought you were dead."
"So did everyone."
"I looked for you."
"I know."
"Why didn't you contact me?"
"Because every time I tried, someone died."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then he stepped back.
"Where is Noah?"
Elena looked at me.
"I don't know."
The room became silent.
Adrian's face hardened.
"That's impossible."
"I was told he was safe."
"By whom?"
"Your father."
Adrian froze.
"My father?"
Elena nodded.
"He said Noah would be protected."
I felt something twist inside me.
"My father died seven years ago."
"Yes."
"Then who told you?"
Elena whispered:
"Victor."
Of course.
Victor Sloane.
The man behind the Circle.
The man who had been manipulating my family for years.
I turned toward Adrian.
"Where is he?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Hidden."
"Find him."
"I've been trying."
"Try harder."
The Forged Signature
My mother had left behind one thing.
A folder.
It was sitting on the basement table.
Inside was a legal document.
The paper was old.
The ink was faded.
At the bottom was a signature.
My father's.
Alexander Vale.
I stared at it.
"What is this?"
Elena walked closer.
Her face changed.
"That's the marriage agreement."
I looked at her.
"Whose?"
She didn't answer.
I read the first paragraph.
My hands began to shake.
It was a contract between the Vale family and the Marlowe family.
Dated twenty-seven years ago.
It contained a clause that made my stomach turn.
The first male heir of Alexander Vale shall remain under the control of the Meridian Circle until his twenty-fifth year.
I looked at Elena.
"That's me."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"But the signature..."
She touched the paper.
"Your father didn't sign it."
"What?"
"His signature was forged."
I stared at the page.
"By whom?"
Elena looked at me.
"Your mother."
The Woman Who Forged It
I couldn't speak.
"My mother forged my father's signature?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To protect you."
"How does signing a contract that makes me property protect me?"
"Because the alternative was worse."
"What alternative?"
Elena hesitated.
"If your father refused, the Circle would take you."
I laughed bitterly.
"So she sold me to save me."
"She gave them a legal fiction."
"That they could control me."
"Exactly."
I looked at the document again.
There was another signature.
Not my father's.
My mother's.
And beneath it:
Witnessed by Clara Vandermark.
I froze.
"Vandermark."
Elena nodded.
"Celeste's family."
Everything connected.
The Circle.
Celeste.
My mother.
The contract.
Elena.
Noah.
All of it.
I looked at Elena.
"How did you find this?"
"Your mother gave it to me."
"When?"
"Before I disappeared."
"Why?"
"She wanted me to destroy it."
I frowned.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I discovered something."
"What?"
She pointed to the bottom of the document.
A small handwritten number.
27.
"What does that mean?"
Elena whispered:
"Twenty-seven signatures."
The Twenty-Seven
Adrian opened another drawer.
Inside were copies.
Twenty-seven contracts.
Twenty-seven families.
Twenty-seven heirs.
Every document contained the same clause.
Every signature had been forged.
And every heir had eventually become part of the Meridian Circle.
I stared at the names.
Some were familiar.
Politicians.
Bankers.
Judges.
Shipping magnates.
One name made me stop.
Victor Sloane.
His signature was forged too.
I looked at Adrian.
"Then Victor wasn't the founder."
"No."
"Who was?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Elena did.
"Your mother."
I turned toward her.
"No."
"Daniel..."
"No."
I shook my head.
"My mother wasn't capable of this."
Elena looked at me sadly.
"That's what she wanted you to believe."
The Truth About My Mother
Elena sat down.
"Your mother wasn't always afraid."
"What happened?"
"She was the strongest person in the family."
I stared.
"Then why did she let them control her?"
"Because of you."
"Again?"
Elena nodded.
"She had one weakness."
"Me."
"Yes."
"Victor knew it."
"He used it."
"How?"
"He threatened to take you away."
I closed my eyes.
"How old was I?"
"Five."
I remembered almost nothing from that time.
Except nightmares.
A locked door.
My mother's crying.
And a man standing in the hallway.
A silver ring.
Victor.
Elena continued.
"Your mother signed the contract because Victor promised you would remain untouched."
"And did he?"
"No."
"What did he do?"
"He trained you."
I looked at Adrian.
"What?"
"Business."
"Negotiation."
"Leadership."
"Power."
He stared at me.
"Everything you thought was your father's legacy was actually Circle training."
My stomach turned.
"My entire life..."
"Was designed to make you their successor."
Elena's Secret
I looked at my wife.
"You knew all this before you married me."
"Yes."
"You were assigned to watch me."
"Yes."
"You were supposed to report everything."
"Yes."
"Then why did you stay?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I fell in love with you."
I looked away.
"That's not enough."
"I know."
"You should have told me."
"I tried."
"When?"
"The night before I disappeared."
I remembered.
Her standing in the doorway.
Her telling me she loved me.
I had thought it was ordinary.
It wasn't.
It had been goodbye.
Elena reached for my hand.
"I wanted to tell you."
I pulled away.
"You let me hate you."
"I know."
"You let Ilaria believe you abandoned her."
"I know."
"You let me build a life with someone else."
Her face crumpled.
"I thought you were safer without me."
I looked at her.
"Was I?"
She shook her head.
"No."
The Signature That Changed Everything
Adrian suddenly picked up another document.
"This isn't the only forged signature."
He turned it over.
There was a second page.
A transfer agreement.
My name.
Elena's name.
And Noah's.
I read the title.
TRANSFER OF HEIRSHIP.
My blood froze.
"What's this?"
Elena stepped closer.
Her eyes widened.
"No."
"What?"
"That's impossible."
"What is it?"
She took the paper.
Her hands trembled.
"Someone transferred Noah's legal identity."
"To whom?"
She looked at the signature.
Then whispered:
"Celeste."
I felt my anger explode.
"Celeste is dead."
"No."
Elena shook her head.
"Celeste isn't dead."
"Then where is she?"
Elena looked at the door.
"She's the woman who called you from my phone."
My blood went cold.
"The woman pretending to be me."
Elena nodded.
"She's using my identity."
"Why?"
"Because she needs access to you."
"To what?"
"The Meridian Archive."
I stared at the document.
"And Noah?"
Elena whispered:
"He's the key."
The Child
"Why is Noah the key?"
Elena looked at me.
"Because he is the first child born outside the Circle in three generations."
I didn't understand.
"What does that mean?"
"His bloodline gives him legal control over the original Vale trust."
I stared.
"My trust."
"No."
She shook her head.
"The trust your grandfather created."
"The one that owns everything."
"Yes."
"How much?"
Elena hesitated.
"Enough to destroy the Circle."
I finally understood.
Noah wasn't just a child they wanted.
He was an inheritance.
A legal weapon.
Whoever controlled him controlled the trust.
I clenched my fists.
"Where is he?"
Elena whispered:
"I think I know."
"Where?"
"The old chapel."
The same place from my mother's message.
Under Solmere.
The Chapel
We reached the chapel at midnight.
Snow covered the steps.
The doors were unlocked.
Inside, candles burned along the walls.
Someone had been there recently.
Adrian raised his weapon.
"Stay behind me."
We moved forward.
At the altar was another document.
This one was sealed.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From my mother.
Daniel,
If you've reached this place, then you finally know enough.
The contract was never about controlling you.
It was about protecting the person who would one day control everything.
Your son.
Noah.
I looked at Elena.
She was crying.
I continued.
The Circle cannot be destroyed while the original heir remains hidden.
Noah is that heir.
They will come for him.
They will come for you.
And they will come for Daniel.
I am sorry.
I should have told you the truth.
But there is one final thing you must understand.
The signature on the original contract was forged.
Not by me.
By the woman you love.
My hands froze.
I looked at Elena.
"What?"
She stared at the paper.
"I didn't sign anything."
I turned the page.
There it was.
Her signature.
Perfect.
Underneath:
ELENA MARLOWE VALE.
She whispered:
"That's not my signature."
Adrian stepped closer.
"It is."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I never signed this."
I looked at her.
"Then who did?"
A slow clap echoed through the chapel.
We turned.
A woman stepped from the shadows.
Long dark hair.
Red coat.
A familiar smile.
Celeste.
Alive.
She smiled at me.
"Finally."
Elena stepped backward.
"Isabelle."
Celeste laughed.
"I've always hated that name."
She looked at me.
"Daniel."
I raised my weapon.
"Where is my son?"
Celeste smiled.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Close."
"Tell me."
She walked toward the altar.
"You want Noah?"
"Yes."
"Then give me the Archive."
"No."
Her smile disappeared.
"Then you'll never see him."
Elena stepped forward.
"Don't listen to her."
Celeste looked at her.
"You still think this is about revenge."
She turned to me.
"It isn't."
"Then what is it?"
She placed one finger on the forged signature.
"It's about inheritance."
Then she leaned closer.
"And tomorrow morning, Daniel..."
Her eyes hardened.
"Your son will legally belong to me."
I stared at her.
She smiled.
"And there isn't a judge in Chicago who can stop it."
Behind her, the chapel doors slammed shut.
May you like
And somewhere beneath the floor...
a baby began to cry.
