Chapter 13 — The Person I Never Suspected

Chapter 13 — The Person I Never Suspected

The lock turned beneath the chapel.

Once.

Twice.

Then the heavy door opened.

I stood in the darkness with my heart pounding so hard it hurt.

My father was alive.

My daughter was with him.

And the woman I had spent my entire life trusting had apparently built half her life around a lie.

I looked at Clara.

"Where is he?"

She shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"He doesn't want you to find him."

"He's the one who called me."

"That wasn't your father."

I froze.

"What?"

Clara's eyes filled with fear.

"Someone used his voice."

The tunnel went silent.

I looked at Isadora.

She was staring at the doorway.

"Who?"

She whispered:

"The only person who could."

The Voice

My phone rang again.

Same number.

I answered.

A man's voice said:

"Daniel."

I turned toward Clara.

She closed her eyes.

The voice continued.

"Your mother lied to you."

I said nothing.

"You think I'm your enemy."

"Are you?"

A pause.

"No."

"Then prove it."

"I already did."

"Where is Ilaria?"

"Safe."

"Let me speak to her."

Silence.

Then I heard a small voice.

"Daddy?"

My entire body went rigid.

"Ilaria."

"Daddy, don't be scared."

I closed my eyes.

"I'm coming for you."

"Don't."

Her voice trembled.

"They said you'll make everything worse."

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

"Ilaria?"

"Daddy..."

A man's voice interrupted.

"Enough."

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

That was my daughter.

I knew her voice.

No recording could imitate the tiny hesitation she made before saying my name.

She was alive.

And someone had her.

The Person I Never Suspected

Clara suddenly whispered:

"I know where they are."

Everyone looked at her.

"Where?"

She pointed toward the old stone wall.

"There is another tunnel."

"Where does it lead?"

"To the Vale estate."

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Not the estate you know."

She walked to a brick panel.

Behind it was another passage.

"The original house."

I stared.

"My house has another foundation?"

"Your house was built over it."

I felt sick.

"How many secrets are under my home?"

Clara looked at me.

"Enough to bury a family."

We entered.

The tunnel narrowed.

Water ran beneath our feet.

After several minutes, we reached a staircase.

At the top was a door.

Clara opened it.

I stepped through.

And stopped.

It was my father's study.

Exactly as I remembered it.

The same desk.

The same shelves.

The same dark green curtains.

The same clock.

But my father had supposedly died seven years ago.

Someone had been maintaining the room.

Fresh flowers sat beside his photograph.

A cup of coffee steamed on the desk.

I stared.

"He's here."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

"Then who?"

She looked toward the desk.

"That's the question."

The Diary

On the desk was a leather-bound diary.

My name was written on the cover.

I opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

Daniel, if you're reading this, I failed to protect you.

I turned the page.

The handwriting was my father's.

Or something designed to look like it.

I didn't die at Pier 44.

I disappeared because I discovered who was controlling the Circle.

I thought Victor was the enemy.

I was wrong.

My heart tightened.

I turned another page.

The Circle isn't controlled by one family.

It is controlled by one person.

Someone who has survived every generation.

Someone who has changed names.

Someone who has never appeared in the registry.

I looked at Clara.

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

I turned the page.

A name had been scratched out.

Then another.

Then another.

But beneath them was a photograph.

A woman.

Young.

Beautiful.

Dark hair.

A familiar smile.

My stomach dropped.

I knew her.

Everyone in my family knew her.

She had been at my childhood birthday parties.

She had held Ilaria when she was born.

She had cried at my wedding.

She had stood beside my mother during my father's funeral.

I whispered:

"No."

Clara looked at me.

"You know her."

I stared at the photograph.

"The person who has been controlling the Circle..."

My voice broke.

"...is Vanessa."

Vanessa

The room seemed to tilt.

Vanessa.

My mother's assistant.

The woman who had spent years organizing our household.

The woman who had helped care for Ilaria.

The woman who had cried with me when Elena disappeared.

The woman who had helped me search for her.

The woman who had told me Celeste was dangerous.

The woman who had given me the first recording.

I couldn't understand.

"That's impossible."

Clara shook her head.

"Nothing is impossible in this family."

I looked at Isadora.

"You knew?"

"No."

"Then how did you find out?"

"I didn't."

She looked at the photograph.

"She found me."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"What did she want?"

Isadora's expression darkened.

"She wanted me to take control of the Circle."

I stared.

"And you agreed."

"I pretended to."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to find out who was behind her."

I looked at the diary.

"And you never realized?"

"I suspected Victor."

"You were wrong."

"Yes."

The Real Architect

I turned through the diary.

Every page contained pieces of the truth.

Vanessa had been born into a minor Circle family.

She had been trained from childhood.

She had changed identities several times.

She had married.

Widowed.

Remarried.

Each time, she moved closer to the Vale family.

My father had trusted her.

My mother had trusted her.

Ewan had trusted her.

Elena had trusted her.

I had trusted her.

She had been everywhere.

Every disappearance.

Every forged document.

Every financial transfer.

Every false lead.

Every carefully timed betrayal.

Vanessa had been there.

But there was something I couldn't understand.

"Why would she help us?"

Clara answered:

"Because she needed you to believe she was helping you."

I looked at the diary.

Then I understood.

The recordings.

The evidence.

The ledger.

The fake documents.

She had been feeding me just enough truth to make me follow the path she wanted.

Not toward freedom.

Toward control.

The Call From Vanessa

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice was calm.

"You found the diary."

I didn't speak.

She sighed.

"I was hoping you'd find it later."

"You took Ilaria."

"No."

"Don't lie to me."

"I didn't take her."

"Then where is she?"

"With someone you trust."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then:

"Your father."

I looked at Clara.

She shook her head.

Vanessa continued:

"You finally understand."

"You've been controlling everything."

"No."

"Then what do you call it?"

"Correction."

"Correction?"

"You were never supposed to be free, Daniel."

I felt rage rise.

"Why?"

"Because you are the last Vale heir."

"I don't want the Circle."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because someone has to control it."

"Let it die."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"It cannot die."

"Why?"

"Because the government depends on it."

I froze.

"What?"

"The police."

"The courts."

"The banks."

"The ports."

"The people you think are criminals."

Her voice became colder.

"The Circle isn't an organization."

"It's infrastructure."

The Final Heir

Vanessa continued.

"Your family has controlled Chicago for generations."

"Victor controlled the Circle."

"No."

"Isadora?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"You."

I stared at the phone.

"What?"

"You've been trained since childhood."

"Everything you learned."

"Every deal."

"Every negotiation."

"Every decision."

"All of it prepared you."

I felt sick.

"I never agreed."

"You didn't need to."

"Why Noah?"

"Because he is your successor."

I looked toward Clara.

She was crying.

Vanessa continued:

"And Ilaria?"

"She's the key."

"Key to what?"

"The Archive."

"Why does she matter?"

"Because she has the original bloodline."

I closed my eyes.

Everything was connected.

The fake signatures.

The contracts.

The children.

The disappearances.

The lies.

All designed to lead to this moment.

The Person Behind Vanessa

I asked:

"Who gave you the orders?"

Vanessa was silent.

"Answer me."

"Someone who died long ago."

"Who?"

"My grandmother."

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"She died in 1978."

"Yes."

"Then how?"

Vanessa whispered:

"She didn't."

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Then Clara suddenly screamed.

"Daniel!"

I turned.

The room was empty.

Isadora was gone.

My mother was gone.

The door behind us was closing.

I ran toward it.

Too late.

The lock slammed shut.

A speaker crackled.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"I'm sorry."

I slammed my fist against the door.

"Open it!"

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because they already know you're here."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then:

"The person you never suspected."

The lights went out.

The Photograph

A projector came alive.

One image appeared on the wall.

It was an old family photograph.

My father.

My mother.

Ewan.

Isadora.

Me.

And someone else.

A woman standing behind my father.

I stared.

She was barely visible.

But I knew her.

My stomach turned.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Celeste.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Clara.

It was someone I had trusted more than anyone.

Someone who had been beside me during every crisis.

Someone who had helped raise Ilaria.

Someone who had known where Elena was.

Someone who had known about Noah.

Someone who had known the location of the Archive.

Someone who had access to every security camera in my house.

The woman stepped into the photograph's foreground.

The image enlarged.

I whispered her name.

"Adrian."

The speaker crackled.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"Finally."

The door opened.

Adrian stood outside.

His gun was pointed at me.

I stared at him.

"You."

He looked devastated.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."

I shook my head.

"Where is my daughter?"

Adrian lowered the gun.

"Safe."

"Where?"

He looked past me.

"With your father."

I stepped toward him.

"You work for Vanessa."

"No."

"Then who?"

Adrian's face hardened.

"I work for your father."

I froze.

"Your father is alive."

"I know."

"And you knew."

"Yes."

"All these years?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

"Because your father made me promise."

"What promise?"

He whispered:

"That I would protect you from him."

I stared at him.

"And did you?"

Adrian lowered his weapon.

"No."

He stepped aside.

"Because he isn't the man you think he is."

Behind him stood a man in a dark coat.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scar across his cheek.

My father's face.

He looked directly at me.

"Hello, son."

I couldn't breathe.

He stepped into the light.

"I've been waiting twenty-eight years to tell you the truth."

Then he looked toward the ceiling.

"And we're almost out of time."

A distant explosion shook the building.

My father grabbed my arm.

"The Circle has been breached."

"By whom?"

He looked at me.

"Vanessa."

Then his expression changed.

"She's coming for Ilaria."

He pulled me toward the exit.

"And this time, she isn't trying to control the Circle."

"She's trying to destroy it."

Another explosion shook the walls.

May you like

My father looked at me.

"And she's going to take every one of us with it."
