Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The gunshot stayed in my ears long after the emergency lights came back on.
For one second, I couldn't see anything.
Then the red lights flickered.
Vanessa was on the floor.
Adrian was gone.
And there was blood on the wall.
I ran toward Vanessa.
"Are you hit?"
She shook her head violently.
"No."
"Then whose blood is that?"
She stared at the wall.
"I don't know."
I pulled my phone out.
No signal.
Of course.
The abandoned hotel suddenly felt less like a meeting place and more like a cage.
I grabbed Vanessa's arm.
"Where did he go?"
"I don't know."
"You've been working with him."
"No."
"You knew he was alive."
"Yes."
"You knew Elena was alive."
She hesitated.
"Yes."
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Then start talking."
Vanessa looked at me.
"I can't."
I laughed bitterly.
"You can."
"No, Daniel."
She looked toward the darkness.
"If I tell you everything, you won't live long enough to find Elena."
"Try me."
She shook her head.
"You don't understand who you're fighting."
"I don't care."
"You should."
She stepped closer.
"The people behind this have been controlling your family for twenty years."
I stared at her.
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Your father."
The Woman I Thought I Knew
I couldn't speak.
"My father is dead."
"I know."
"Then how is he controlling anything?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"He isn't."
I stared at her.
"Then what are you saying?"
She looked toward the corridor.
"Your father wasn't the mastermind."
"Who was?"
She shook her head.
"Not here."
I grabbed her wrist.
"You're not leaving until you tell me."
She looked down at my hand.
Then at me.
"I know where your wife is."
My grip loosened.
"Where?"
"Two hours from here."
"Take me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because the moment you see her, everything changes."
"I don't care."
"You will."
I stepped closer.
"Why did you torture my daughter?"
Her face collapsed.
"I didn't."
"I walked into the house and saw you holding an ice bucket."
"I was trying to make her remember."
I stared at her.
"You poured ice water on a four-year-old."
"Because she was having a seizure."
I froze.
"What?"
"She wasn't responding."
Vanessa's voice broke.
"She kept repeating the same sentence."
"What sentence?"
She whispered:
"The woman in the red coat."
The Red Coat
I remembered the security footage.
Elena.
The red suitcase.
Adrian.
But there had been something else.
A reflection.
A woman's coat.
I hadn't noticed it before.
"What woman?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know her name."
"But you know her."
"Yes."
"Who?"
"Someone who has been inside your house."
I stared.
"One of the staff?"
"No."
"Security?"
"No."
"Family?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.
"Closer."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
She looked directly at me.
"Your mother."
I stepped backward.
"No."
"Daniel—"
"My mother has been protecting Ilaria."
"Has she?"
"She told me about Adrian."
"After eighteen months."
I didn't answer.
Vanessa continued.
"She knew Elena was alive."
"How?"
"Because she was the one who moved her."
I stared at her.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"You shouldn't believe me."
She wiped her eyes.
"You should ask your mother."
The Call
My phone suddenly vibrated.
One bar of signal.
My mother's name appeared.
I answered.
"Mom?"
Nothing.
"Mom?"
A whisper came through.
"Don't trust Vanessa."
I looked at Vanessa.
Then my mother said:
"She's lying."
The call ended.
Vanessa stared at me.
"What did she say?"
I didn't answer.
She nodded.
"That's what she always does."
"What?"
"She makes you choose."
"Between what?"
"Between the truth and the person you love."
A noise came from upstairs.
We both looked up.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was walking across the second floor.
Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.
"Don't."
"Why?"
"Because that's where they keep the records."
"What records?"
"Everything."
I pulled my weapon.
"We're going upstairs."
She shook her head.
"Daniel."
"You're coming with me."
She had no choice.
The Room Above Us
The second floor was dark.
Dust covered everything.
At the end of the hallway was a steel door.
It was locked.
Vanessa pulled a key from her pocket.
I stared at it.
"Where did you get that?"
"From Adrian."
She unlocked the door.
Inside were filing cabinets.
Hundreds.
Maybe thousands.
Names were written on them.
Dates.
Addresses.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Bank statements.
Surveillance photographs.
I opened the first drawer.
A family.
I opened another.
Another family.
Then I saw my name.
DANIEL VALE.
I pulled the folder out.
My entire life was inside.
School records.
Medical records.
Travel records.
Photographs.
Even handwritten notes about my relationships.
I opened the final section.
There was a photograph of me and Elena.
Taken three days before she disappeared.
Someone had written:
PHASE TWO COMPLETE.
I looked at Vanessa.
"What is Phase Two?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
I opened another folder.
ILARIA VALE.
My hands trembled.
Inside was a photograph of my daughter sleeping.
Taken inside our house.
The date was two weeks after Elena disappeared.
Someone had been watching her.
For months.
I turned the page.
A medical report.
Ilaria's condition.
Her medication.
Her therapy.
Her fears.
Someone had documented everything.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
MEMORY SUPPRESSION SUCCESSFUL.
I stopped breathing.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa stared at the page.
"I didn't know."
"Someone tried to erase my daughter's memories."
"Yes."
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Your family."
The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I turned toward Vanessa.
"How much do you know?"
She looked exhausted.
"Too much."
"Then tell me."
"I was hired by your father."
"For what?"
"To watch Elena."
My chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Because Elena had found something."
"What?"
"The trust."
I remembered the documents in my father's study.
"The family fortune."
Vanessa nodded.
"Elena discovered that your family's wealth was built on stolen identities."
"Why would my father care?"
"He didn't."
"Then who did?"
She looked at me.
"Your grandmother."
I froze.
"My grandmother?"
"She was the one running everything."
I stared at her.
"She's been dead for twelve years."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"She's alive."
The room seemed to tilt.
"My grandmother died."
"That's what everyone was told."
"Where is she?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Solmere."
The family hotel.
The hotel my grandmother supposedly left to charity.
The hotel no one had been allowed to enter for years.
I suddenly understood the message Adrian had given me.
The place your father buried the truth.
He hadn't meant a grave.
He meant a building.
Elena's Voice
A phone rang inside one of the cabinets.
Vanessa froze.
"That's impossible."
The ringing continued.
I opened the drawer.
A small phone lay inside.
No number.
No screen.
Just a single button.
I answered.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
"Daniel?"
I stopped breathing.
"Elena?"
Silence.
Then:
"Don't trust anyone."
My knees nearly gave out.
"Where are you?"
"Listen carefully."
"I'm listening."
"You have twenty-four hours."
"For what?"
"To find the red suitcase."
"I found it."
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"You found a copy."
I stared at Vanessa.
"What is in the real one?"
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
A pause.
"Who ordered my disappearance."
My heart pounded.
"Who?"
Elena whispered:
"Your mother."
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
Vanessa was crying.
"No."
I turned toward her.
"She said my mother."
Vanessa shook her head.
"She's lying."
"Why?"
"Because she's afraid."
"Of my mother?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Vanessa looked toward the doorway.
And whispered:
"Of herself."
The Real Red Suitcase
We left the hotel before dawn.
Vanessa drove.
I sat beside her.
Neither of us spoke.
At sunrise, we reached an old train station.
She parked behind a warehouse.
"Why are we here?"
"The suitcase was moved."
"By whom?"
"Adrian."
We entered the warehouse.
At the far end stood an old storage locker.
Vanessa gave me a key.
Inside was a red suitcase.
My heart began pounding.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
A passport.
And a small child's drawing.
I picked it up.
It showed three people.
A woman.
A little girl.
And a man.
The man had been crossed out.
Below them was written:
MOMMY, ILARIA, DADDY.
I turned the page.
There was another drawing.
A fourth person stood behind them.
The figure wore a red coat.
The face had been scribbled over.
Ilaria had drawn it.
I looked at Vanessa.
"She saw this person."
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
"Who is she?"
"I don't know."
I opened the passport.
My hands froze.
It belonged to Elena.
But the photograph wasn't the woman I knew.
It showed her with another name.
ELENA MARLOWE.
Not Elena Vale.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why did my wife have another identity?"
"Because she wasn't born Elena Vale."
"What?"
She took a breath.
"She was born into the same organization that controls your family."
I stared.
"She was sent to marry you."
The words made no sense.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
"Why would she marry me?"
"To get close to the trust."
I shook my head.
"No."
Vanessa looked away.
"Then she fell in love with you."
I couldn't speak.
"That wasn't part of the plan."
The Woman Who Betrayed Them
I opened the next document.
It was a contract.
Elena's signature was at the bottom.
My hands shook.
The agreement required her to marry me, gain access to the family trust, and eventually transfer control.
But there was another signature.
A second witness.
Vanessa Hart.
I looked at her.
"You signed this."
"Yes."
"You helped them."
"Yes."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because I was trying to save Elena."
"From whom?"
"My sister."
I stared.
"Your sister?"
Vanessa nodded.
"The woman in the red coat."
My blood ran cold.
"Who is she?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"My sister is the woman who ordered Elena's disappearance."
"What's her name?"
Vanessa whispered:
"Clara."
I stared at her.
"Clara who?"
Vanessa looked toward the warehouse door.
"Clara Vale."
My heart stopped.
My mother's maiden name.
My grandmother's name.
And a name I had never once heard spoken in our family.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"Clara isn't just alive."
She swallowed.
"She's the person your family has been obeying for generations."
Before I could respond, headlights appeared outside.
Several vehicles.
Doors slammed.
Men entered the warehouse.
Vanessa looked terrified.
"They found us."
I grabbed the suitcase.
"Where do we go?"
She pointed toward a back door.
"Run."
We ran.
Behind us, someone shouted my name.
Not Daniel.
Not Mr. Vale.
Something much worse.
A voice I recognized from childhood.
A voice I had heard beside my father's grave.
A voice I had believed belonged to a dead woman.
"Daniel."
I stopped.
Vanessa grabbed me.
"Don't turn around."
But I did.
At the entrance of the warehouse stood an elderly woman in a long red coat.
Her hair was silver.
Her face was calm.
And her eyes were exactly the same as my mother's.
She smiled.
"Come home, Daniel."
I couldn't breathe.
Vanessa whispered beside me:
"That's Clara."
The woman in the red coat looked at the suitcase in my hands.
May you like
Then she said:
"Now you finally have something worth killing for."
