CHAPTER 12 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

CHAPTER 12 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

The speakers went silent.

Julian stood in the center of the estate, staring at the ceiling.

"Daddy?"

His son's voice still echoed inside his head.

Arthur had brought the boy into the house.

Somewhere.

Close.

And Julian knew exactly what that meant.

This was no longer about money.

No longer about the trust.

No longer even about the secrets surrounding Victoria.

It was about control.

And someone had just revealed the one thing Julian could never surrender.

His son.

Clara touched his arm.

"Julian."

He looked at her.

"We'll find him."

Clara nodded.

But Victoria was staring at them from the staircase.

Her face had changed.

She no longer looked angry.

She looked defeated.

And that frightened Julian more.

"Victoria."

She slowly looked at him.

"Why Clara?"

Victoria said nothing.

"Why her?"

Still nothing.

Julian stepped closer.

"You didn't choose her because of the trust."

Victoria's eyes flickered.

"You chose her long before she married me."

Clara looked at Victoria.

"Why?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, the woman standing before them seemed much older.

"You want the truth?"

Julian nodded.

"Then you should know what your father did."

Twenty-seven years earlier.

Victoria had been nineteen.

She had been pregnant.

She had believed Alexander loved her.

She was wrong.

Alexander didn't love people.

He owned them.

He had already planned the future of the Sterling family.

A male heir.

A powerful empire.

A bloodline that would control everything.

When Victoria gave birth to twin girls, Alexander was furious.

"They are useless."

Victoria had cried.

"They are my children."

"They are liabilities."

He had ordered the twins separated.

One child would be given to the Vance family.

The other would disappear.

Victoria refused.

So Alexander gave her a choice.

Keep one daughter.

Or lose both.

Victoria chose Clara.

But Evelyn intervened.

She took Clara.

And she made Victoria believe the child was dead.

For twenty years, Victoria believed she had lost her daughter.

Until she discovered the truth.

Clara was alive.

And married to Julian.

That was when everything changed.

Julian stared at Victoria.

"You knew who Clara was."

"Yes."

"You knew before our wedding."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you stop us?"

Victoria looked at him.

"Because I needed you to marry her."

Clara's face tightened.

"Why?"

Victoria looked directly at her.

"Because you were the only person who could break the Sterling empire."

Julian froze.

"What?"

Victoria continued.

"Your father left something behind."

"What?"

"A clause."

She looked toward the library.

"The Vance inheritance wasn't supposed to remain with you."

Julian frowned.

"Then who?"

Victoria whispered:

"Your first biological heir."

Julian understood.

"My child."

Victoria nodded.

"Exactly."

Clara's expression changed.

"You wanted us to have a child."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because the moment your son was born, Alexander lost control."

Julian stared.

"So everything..."

"The surveillance."

"The threats."

"The kidnapping."

"The lies."

Victoria nodded.

"All of it."

Clara's voice trembled.

"You destroyed my life because you wanted to use my child."

Victoria looked away.

"I wanted to protect him."

Clara laughed bitterly.

"By imprisoning me?"

Victoria didn't answer.

"By drugging me?"

Nothing.

"By convincing Julian I was dead?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I thought it was the only way."

Julian stepped between them.

"No."

Victoria looked at him.

"You had another choice."

"I was afraid."

"Of Alexander?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Victoria's expression became hollow.

"Because I had already seen what he did to people who betrayed him."

Julian's phone vibrated.

A message.

One location.

The west wing.

He looked at Clara.

"He's here."

They moved immediately.

The servants followed.

Victoria remained on the staircase.

Julian stopped.

"You aren't coming?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I have one thing left to tell you."

Julian turned.

"Make it quick."

Victoria whispered:

"Alexander didn't order Clara's kidnapping."

Julian froze.

"What?"

"Someone else did."

Clara stared at her.

"Who?"

Victoria looked toward the hallway.

"Evelyn."

Julian's face hardened.

"My mother?"

Victoria nodded.

"She was terrified of Clara."

"Why?"

"Because Clara had something Evelyn couldn't control."

"What?"

Victoria's voice dropped.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

"Your father's death."

Silence.

Julian stared at her.

"My father died in a car accident."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Clara whispered:

"He was murdered."

Victoria nodded.

"And Evelyn helped arrange it."

Julian felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

"My mother killed my father?"

"She didn't kill him herself."

Victoria swallowed.

"But she gave the order."

Julian stepped backward.

"Why?"

Victoria looked at Clara.

"Because Victor had discovered the truth about you."

Clara frowned.

"What truth?"

"Your father wasn't merely investigating the Sterling family."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"He was trying to take you back."

They reached the west wing.

The corridor was dark.

Julian checked the location again.

"He's nearby."

Clara heard something.

A child's laugh.

She froze.

"Julian."

They followed the sound.

A door opened.

Inside was a small bedroom.

A blue blanket.

A wooden train.

A stuffed bear.

And on the bed—

nothing.

Julian's heart dropped.

Then he noticed a photograph.

His son standing beside Arthur.

On the back:

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Julian crushed the photograph in his hand.

"He's playing with us."

Clara looked around.

"No."

"What?"

She pointed toward the floor.

"There."

A small red toy car.

Their son always carried one.

Clara picked it up.

"He's been here."

Julian nodded.

"Recently."

Then he heard a voice behind them.

"You were always too slow."

Julian turned.

Arthur stood in the doorway.

No weapon.

No fear.

Just a smile.

"Where is my son?"

Arthur laughed.

"Your son?"

He looked at Clara.

"Interesting."

"What does that mean?"

Arthur stepped forward.

"You still don't know."

Julian's voice became cold.

"Know what?"

Arthur looked at Clara.

"Why Victoria really wanted you."

Clara's face tightened.

"She told us."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"She told you the version that makes her look guilty."

Julian stared.

"Then tell us the truth."

Arthur smiled.

"Victoria wasn't trying to destroy Clara."

He paused.

"She was trying to keep her alive."

Silence.

Julian looked at Clara.

Arthur continued.

"Because Evelyn had already ordered her death."

Clara's eyes widened.

"Why?"

Arthur's expression became serious.

"Because Clara inherited something from her biological father."

"What?"

"A piece of information."

Julian stepped forward.

"What information?"

Arthur looked toward the ceiling.

"Your father's final message."

Julian froze.

"My father left a message?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Arthur smiled.

"Inside Clara."

Clara went pale.

"What?"

Arthur shook his head.

"Not literally."

He reached into his pocket.

Then removed a small silver key.

Julian recognized it.

His father's key.

Arthur placed it on the floor.

"Victor hid the message before he died."

Julian picked it up.

"Where?"

Arthur answered:

"In the room where Clara was imprisoned."

Clara stared.

"The room behind the wall."

Arthur nodded.

"Exactly."

Julian understood.

The room hadn't merely been a prison.

It had been a vault.

Victor had hidden evidence there.

Evidence Evelyn had spent years trying to recover.

And Clara had unknowingly been standing on top of it.

Then Arthur's expression changed.

"There's one thing you still don't understand."

Julian waited.

"Victoria didn't order your wife's disappearance."

"Then who did?"

Arthur looked directly at Clara.

"Evelyn."

Julian's stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"Because Evelyn discovered Clara was Victor's heir."

"She wasn't my father's biological daughter."

Arthur smiled.

"That's where you're wrong."

Clara froze.

Arthur continued:

"Victor adopted Clara legally."

"So?"

"His estate was structured around legal succession."

Julian stared.

"Clara inherited his private holdings."

"Yes."

"And she didn't know."

"No."

"How much?"

Arthur laughed.

"Enough to destroy Evelyn."

Julian looked at Clara.

"You were the heir."

Clara whispered:

"I didn't know."

"That's why Evelyn wanted you gone."

Arthur nodded.

"She needed you erased before you could claim the assets."

Julian finally understood.

Victoria had been trying to control Clara.

Evelyn had been trying to eliminate her.

And Alexander had been trying to control everyone.

Three factions.

One woman trapped in the middle.

Clara.

Arthur stepped backward.

Julian raised his weapon.

"Where is my son?"

Arthur smiled.

"Safe."

"Where?"

"Where you can't reach him."

Julian moved forward.

Arthur raised his hand.

"Don't."

Julian stopped.

"Because if you hurt me, you'll never see him again."

Clara stepped forward.

"Arthur."

He looked at her.

"You said you wanted to protect me."

"I did."

"Then prove it."

Arthur's smile disappeared.

Clara continued.

"Tell us where he is."

Arthur hesitated.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

A pause.

"Now?"

He hung up.

Julian noticed the fear.

"What happened?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Evelyn."

Julian's face hardened.

"Where is she?"

Arthur whispered:

"She has your son."

The room went silent.

Arthur turned toward the hallway.

"I was supposed to deliver him to her."

Julian stepped forward.

"You won't."

Arthur looked at him.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"Evelyn isn't running."

Arthur's voice shook.

"She's leaving."

"Where?"

"The private airfield."

Julian grabbed Clara's hand.

"Then we go."

Arthur shook his head.

"You won't make it."

Julian looked at him.

"Watch me."

Arthur stared for several seconds.

Then he stepped aside.

"There is a tunnel beneath the estate."

Julian stopped.

"Where does it lead?"

"The airfield."

Clara looked at Arthur.

"Why are you helping us?"

Arthur looked away.

"Because I finally understand something."

"What?"

He looked at Clara.

"Being part of this family isn't worth becoming like them."

Julian nodded.

"Then come with us."

Arthur hesitated.

"I can't."

"Why?"

Arthur pulled a small photograph from his pocket.

It showed a woman.

Madeline.

On the back was written:

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.

Arthur's face broke.

"Because I betrayed my sister."

He looked at Clara.

"And I have to make that right."

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Julian looked at Clara.

"Ready?"

She nodded.

"Let's bring our son home."

Behind them, Victoria appeared.

She was crying.

Julian stopped.

Victoria whispered:

"Clara."

Clara turned.

"I know what you want to ask."

Clara waited.

Victoria took a trembling breath.

"I didn't hate you."

Clara's eyes hardened.

"You used me."

"Yes."

"You lied to me."

"Yes."

"You let them hurt me."

Victoria nodded.

"But every time I tried to stop Evelyn, she threatened to kill you."

Clara stared.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was a coward."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victoria reached into her coat.

She pulled out a folded document.

"This is the last thing your father left for you."

Clara took it.

Julian opened it.

The first line read:

To my daughter, Clara.

Clara's hands began trembling.

Julian looked at her.

"Do you want to read it?"

Clara nodded.

She unfolded the letter.

And the final sentence made her stop breathing.

If you're reading this, Evelyn has already betrayed the family—and the person you trust most is not who you think.

Clara looked at Julian.

He stared back.

Neither of them spoke.

Because somewhere in the darkness beneath the estate, someone had already begun moving toward the airfield.

May you like

And they had no idea which member of their family would betray them next.

To be continued.
