CHAPTER 9 — Clara’s Hidden Evidence

CHAPTER 9 — Clara’s Hidden Evidence

The scream downstairs lasted only three seconds.

Then silence.

Julian tightened his grip on Clara's hand.

"Stay behind me."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

He looked at her.

She was trembling.

But she wasn't afraid in the way she had been before.

Something inside her had changed.

Four years of silence had finally broken.

"I know where the evidence is."

Julian stared at her.

"What evidence?"

Clara looked toward the ledger.

"The evidence I collected while I was a prisoner."

Daniel's face went pale.

"You collected evidence?"

Clara nodded.

"For four years."

Julian couldn't speak.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because I didn't know who was listening."

She looked around the hallway.

"Every room had microphones."

Daniel nodded.

"She's right."

Clara looked at him.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"And you still left me there."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"I did."

Clara turned away.

"I hated you for that."

Daniel whispered:

"I know."

Julian led Clara into the hidden room.

He closed the door.

Daniel remained outside.

For the first time since Clara's rescue, she was alone with Julian.

He sat across from her.

"You said you collected evidence."

"Yes."

"What kind?"

"Everything."

She reached beneath her coat.

Then pulled out a small strip of fabric.

Julian frowned.

"What is that?"

"Part of a microphone."

She placed it on the table.

"I found it inside the west-wing bedroom."

Julian stared.

"I thought there were microphones."

"There were twelve."

His expression hardened.

"Twelve?"

"At first."

She pulled another object from her pocket.

A tiny memory card.

"I removed three."

"Where did you get the tools?"

"From the medical room."

Julian stared.

"You had access to the medical room?"

"Only after midnight."

She continued.

"That's when everyone stopped watching me."

Julian looked at her.

"How?"

"I pretended to sleep."

Clara smiled bitterly.

"They thought I was broken."

She looked at the memory card.

"They were wrong."

The first recording lasted twenty-seven seconds.

Clara played it.

A man's voice filled the room.

Victoria.

"She still refuses to sign."

Another voice.

Evelyn.

"Then increase the pressure."

Victoria:

"She asked about Julian again."

Evelyn:

"Tell her he abandoned her."

Clara's fingers tightened.

Victoria:

"She doesn't believe me."

Evelyn:

"Then make her believe it."

The recording ended.

Julian closed his eyes.

"They told you I abandoned you."

"Every day."

"What else?"

Clara played another.

A doctor.

"Her condition is deteriorating."

Evelyn:

"Keep her sedated."

Doctor:

"That isn't medically necessary."

Evelyn:

"Medical necessity is irrelevant."

The recording ended.

Julian's hands curled into fists.

"They drugged you."

"Not every day."

"But often."

"Enough."

Clara looked away.

"I learned to hide the medication."

Julian stared at her.

"Where?"

She pointed toward her sleeve.

"I kept some under the stitching."

Then she revealed the photographs.

Dozens.

She had taken them with a tiny camera she had stolen from the medical cabinet.

Pictures of doors.

Locks.

Documents.

Vehicles.

People.

Dates.

Faces.

Julian spread them across the table.

"How did you get all of this?"

Clara smiled faintly.

"I learned to survive."

One photograph showed Victoria handing an envelope to Daniel.

Another showed Evelyn entering the estate.

Another showed Arthur Kane.

Julian stared at the last one.

"Arthur."

"Yes."

"When did you take this?"

"Three years ago."

"Then you knew he was alive."

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Clara looked at him.

"Because every time I tried to send something out, it disappeared."

Julian frowned.

"How?"

"The guards searched everything."

She pointed to a photograph.

"They didn't search my clothes."

Clara reached into her shoe.

Julian stared.

"That's where you hid them?"

She nodded.

A tiny compartment had been sewn beneath the sole.

Inside was another memory card.

Julian laughed quietly.

"You've been carrying this for four years."

"Yes."

"Why now?"

"Because I finally have someone I trust."

Julian looked at her.

"You trust me?"

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"I never stopped."

They inserted the memory card.

A folder appeared.

Hundreds of files.

Dates.

Names.

Coordinates.

Payments.

Medical records.

Clara had created a complete archive.

Julian opened the first document.

PROJECT CLARA.

He froze.

"This is the operation."

Clara nodded.

"That's what they called it."

He opened another.

SUBJECT: CLARA VANCE.

STATUS: CONTAINED.

OBJECTIVE: OBTAIN TRUST TRANSFER.

Julian looked at Clara.

"They wanted you to transfer the trust."

"Yes."

"What happened if you refused?"

Clara's voice became quiet.

"They threatened you."

Julian froze.

"Me?"

"They showed me photographs of you."

"What photographs?"

"Everywhere you went."

She opened another file.

There were photographs of Julian sleeping.

Julian entering his office.

Julian leaving restaurants.

Julian at the airport.

Julian visiting police stations.

His entire life had been monitored.

Clara whispered:

"They told me they could kill you whenever they wanted."

Julian stared at the images.

"And you believed them."

"I had no reason not to."

He looked at her.

"You protected me."

Clara nodded.

"Every time they asked me to sign something, I refused."

"Because of me?"

"Because I knew you would keep looking."

Julian reached across the table.

He took her hand.

"I'm sorry."

Clara squeezed his fingers.

"I know."

Then they found the file that changed everything.

Its title was:

SUBJECT: JULIAN VANCE

Clara looked at Julian.

"Open it."

He did.

Inside was a DNA report.

Julian read the first line.

Then stopped.

"What?"

Clara leaned closer.

The report confirmed something they already suspected.

Julian was not Victor Vance's biological son.

His biological father was Alexander Sterling.

But there was another result.

Julian's DNA had been compared to someone else.

Someone unexpected.

The report showed a match.

99.98%.

Julian stared.

"Who?"

Clara's face went pale.

"The child."

Julian looked at her.

"Our son?"

She nodded.

"The test was done before he was born."

Julian's heart pounded.

"How?"

"Victoria had access to your medical records."

He read the conclusion.

PATERNITY CONSISTENT.

Julian closed his eyes.

"Our son is mine."

Clara whispered:

"They knew."

"Everyone knew."

"Yes."

"Then why hide him?"

Clara looked at another file.

"Because the trust has a bloodline clause."

Julian opened it.

The clause was simple.

If Julian had a biological heir, the trust could never be transferred to Evelyn.

Their son was not merely an heir.

He was the reason the entire conspiracy had to continue.

Julian stared at Clara.

"They needed our son hidden."

"Yes."

"Because if he existed..."

"The trust stayed with him."

Then Clara opened the final folder.

The one she had never dared to examine.

Its name was:

FINAL CONTINGENCY.

Julian clicked it.

A video appeared.

Victoria was sitting in a dark room.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Frightened.

She spoke directly to the camera.

"If you're watching this, Clara escaped."

Julian leaned forward.

Victoria continued.

"Evelyn doesn't know about the archive."

She paused.

"That's important."

Then she whispered:

"Because Evelyn isn't the person controlling this."

Julian froze.

Clara stared at the screen.

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

"There's someone above her."

Silence.

Then Victoria said the name.

"Alexander Sterling."

Julian's blood ran cold.

The man he believed was dead.

His biological father.

The man connected to Evelyn.

The man who had supposedly vanished years ago.

Victoria continued.

"He has been alive the entire time."

The screen flickered.

"And he's coming for the child."

The video ended.

Julian stood.

"We need to find him."

Clara nodded.

But before either could move, another file opened automatically.

A live audio feed.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"You've been very clever, Clara."

She froze.

Julian looked at the screen.

The voice continued.

"You collected evidence."

A pause.

"You hid it."

Another pause.

"And you brought it straight back to me."

Julian's face hardened.

"Who are you?"

The man laughed.

"You already know."

Clara's blood ran cold.

Alexander Sterling.

His voice was unmistakable.

"You spent four years looking for your wife, Julian."

A pause.

"Now you have her."

Then his voice became colder.

"But if you want your son..."

The audio cut.

A single photograph appeared on the screen.

A little boy standing beside a lake.

And behind him stood an older man with silver hair.

Alexander.

The photograph had been taken that morning.

Julian stared.

Clara covered her mouth.

Their son was alive.

But Alexander knew exactly where they were.

May you like

And now the family they had spent four years trying to escape had finally come for them.

To be continued.
