CHAPTER 5 — The Servant Who Knew Too Much

CHAPTER 5 — The Servant Who Knew Too Much

The child's voice echoed through the abandoned hotel.

"Mom?"

Julian stared at Victoria.

She didn't move.

For the first time, the woman who had spent four years controlling every story, every witness, and every piece of evidence looked completely unprepared.

Julian's voice was quiet.

"Who is upstairs?"

Victoria's lips parted.

"Nobody."

The answer came too quickly.

Julian looked toward the staircase.

Then back at her.

"That was a child's voice."

"You imagined it."

"I didn't."

Victoria stepped toward him.

"Julian, listen to me."

"No."

He moved past her.

Victoria grabbed his arm.

"Don't go upstairs."

Julian stopped.

He slowly looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

"Why?"

Victoria released him.

Because she knew she had already said too much.

Julian climbed the stairs.

Every step seemed louder than the last.

At the top was a long corridor.

The lights were off.

A door stood slightly open.

Julian pushed it.

Inside was a small bedroom.

Empty.

A child's bed stood against the wall.

A stuffed rabbit rested on the pillow.

Julian walked closer.

There was a photograph on the bedside table.

He picked it up.

His breath stopped.

The photograph showed a baby.

And beside the baby stood Victoria.

But the photograph was dated four years earlier.

Julian turned.

"Where is the child?"

Victoria stood in the doorway.

She looked exhausted.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"He isn't yours."

Julian stared.

"Who is he?"

Victoria remained silent.

Then footsteps came from behind Julian.

He turned.

An elderly woman stood at the end of the corridor.

Margaret.

The housekeeper.

She looked terrified.

Julian frowned.

"What are you doing here?"

Margaret's eyes moved toward Victoria.

"I followed you."

Victoria's face changed.

"Margaret."

The old woman shook her head.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I've been silent long enough."

They returned to the hotel room.

Margaret sat at the table.

Her hands trembled.

Julian stood opposite her.

Clara had been brought safely to the hotel by Julian's security team after he discovered the child's room.

She now sat beside him.

Her eyes never left Margaret.

"You knew," Clara whispered.

Margaret nodded.

"I knew from the beginning."

Julian's voice was controlled.

"Beginning of what?"

"Your father's plan."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Don't."

Margaret looked at her.

"You've had four years."

Then she looked at Julian.

"It's time."

Julian waited.

Margaret took a breath.

"Victoria did not kidnap Clara."

Clara stiffened.

"What?"

Margaret continued.

"She helped."

Victoria looked away.

"But she wasn't the person giving the orders."

Julian's stomach tightened.

"Who was?"

Margaret hesitated.

"Victor."

Julian expected the answer.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

"There was another person."

"Who?"

Margaret looked at Victoria.

"The person Victoria answered to."

Victoria whispered:

"Don't say her name."

Julian stared.

"Who?"

Margaret's voice dropped.

"Evelyn."

Julian froze.

"My mother."

Clara's fingers tightened around Julian's hand.

"But she's dead."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Julian stared at her.

"My mother died twelve years ago."

"That's what your father wanted you to believe."

"Why?"

"Because she knew too much."

Victoria suddenly stood.

"Stop."

Margaret didn't.

"Evelyn was the one who ordered Clara watched."

Julian turned toward Victoria.

"You were taking orders from my mother?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"At first."

"At first?"

"She promised she would protect me."

"From what?"

Victoria looked at the floor.

"From your father."

Julian understood that he was hearing only fragments.

He needed the whole story.

"What happened four years ago?"

Margaret answered.

"Clara discovered the trust."

Julian frowned.

"What trust?"

"The Vance Legacy Trust."

Julian's face changed.

He knew the name.

His father had mentioned it only once.

It was an old family structure established before Julian was born.

But Julian had never been allowed access to its records.

Margaret continued.

"Your father placed nearly half of the family's private assets into that trust."

"Why?"

"Because he knew someone would eventually try to take control."

Julian looked at Clara.

"What did she discover?"

"That the trust beneficiary wasn't you."

Silence.

Clara whispered:

"Who was it?"

Margaret looked at her.

"You."

Clara froze.

Julian frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does if Victor wasn't your biological father."

Julian felt the same cold sensation he'd experienced at the cemetery.

The note.

JULIAN IS NOT MY SON.

Margaret continued.

"Your mother had a child before she married Victor."

Julian stared.

"Me?"

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"Then who is my father?"

Margaret looked at Victoria.

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

Julian's voice hardened.

"Tell me."

Margaret whispered a name.

"Alexander Sterling."

Julian froze.

Victoria closed her eyes.

"My father."

The room went silent.

Julian looked at her.

"Your father?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

Everything suddenly became tangled.

The Vance family.

The Sterling family.

His mother.

Victoria.

The inheritance.

Clara.

The missing child.

Julian stepped backward.

"So my mother had a child with Alexander Sterling."

Margaret nodded.

"And Victor raised that child as his own."

Julian whispered:

"Me."

"Yes."

Clara looked at him.

"Then why was I targeted?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Because you discovered the truth."

Four years earlier.

Clara had found an old document inside Victor's office.

It contained a list of beneficiaries.

At the top was Julian.

But beside his name was another notation.

BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT OF EVELYN VANCE AND ALEXANDER STERLING.

Clara had initially thought it was a mistake.

Then she found the second document.

A private DNA report.

Julian was not Victor's son.

He was Alexander Sterling's.

And that meant the entire Vance inheritance had been built on a lie.

But there was something even more important.

A clause in the Vance Legacy Trust.

If Julian's biological parentage was publicly disputed, control of the estate would temporarily pass to...

Margaret swallowed.

"To Clara."

Julian stared.

"What?"

"Your father had named your wife as trustee."

Clara looked shocked.

"Why me?"

"Because Victor trusted you."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"He trusted nobody."

Margaret shook her head.

"He trusted Clara more than anyone."

"Then why imprison her?"

"Because Evelyn found out."

Julian's voice hardened.

"My mother."

Margaret nodded.

"Evelyn wanted control of the trust."

"How?"

"By making Clara disappear."

Clara whispered:

"So I was never the target because of money."

"No."

Margaret looked at her.

"You were the only person who could legally stop them."

Julian turned toward Victoria.

"You knew this."

Victoria nodded.

"I knew some of it."

"Some?"

"I knew Clara had found documents."

"And you helped my mother."

Victoria's voice cracked.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid enough to destroy my wife?"

Victoria looked at Clara.

"I didn't know how far Evelyn would go."

"You watched."

"I tried to help."

Clara stared at her.

"When?"

Victoria couldn't answer.

Clara stood.

"You watched me disappear."

"I was trapped too."

"You had a choice."

Victoria began crying.

"So did you."

Clara froze.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria looked at her.

"You could have signed the papers."

"What papers?"

"The transfer."

Julian stepped forward.

"What transfer?"

Victoria wiped her tears.

"The trust."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"You wanted Clara to sign over the inheritance."

"Yes."

"Did she?"

"No."

Victoria smiled bitterly.

"That's why she survived."

Margaret reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this for four years."

Julian took it.

"What is it?"

"A copy of the original trust agreement."

He opened it.

The final page contained a handwritten amendment.

Julian read it aloud.

"Upon the disappearance, incapacitation, or unlawful detention of Clara Vance, all protected assets shall immediately be frozen until her safe return."

Julian looked up.

"That's why they couldn't kill her."

Margaret nodded.

"They needed her alive."

Clara's face went pale.

"Then why did they tell you I was dead?"

"Because they wanted Julian to stop looking."

Julian closed his eyes.

Four years.

They had needed Clara alive.

They had needed Julian convinced she was gone.

They had created the perfect lie.

But there was still one question.

Julian looked at Margaret.

"What about the child?"

Margaret hesitated.

"That is the part I don't know."

Victoria suddenly spoke.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

Victoria's voice was barely audible.

"Your son was born four years ago."

Clara's breathing stopped.

"Where is he?"

Victoria looked toward the bedroom.

"Safe."

Julian stared.

"With whom?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Margaret did.

"With Evelyn."

Julian's face went white.

"My mother has my son."

Victoria nodded.

"And she's been raising him."

Clara covered her mouth.

Four years.

Her child had been alive.

All this time.

And someone had deliberately kept him from her.

Julian stepped toward Victoria.

"Where is my mother?"

Victoria looked at him.

"Closer than you think."

Then the hotel doors opened.

A woman entered.

Older.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Julian froze.

Clara stood.

Margaret whispered:

"Evelyn."

The woman smiled.

"My son."

Julian stared at her.

"You stole my wife."

Evelyn's expression remained calm.

"No."

She looked at Clara.

"I protected you."

Clara's voice broke.

"Where is my son?"

Evelyn smiled.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

Julian stepped forward.

"Then give me the right one."

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

"Ask yourself why Victor was so terrified of your birth."

Silence.

Then Evelyn turned toward the door.

"Because the truth about who Julian really is doesn't just change an inheritance."

She looked directly at her son.

"It changes who has the right to everything."

And before Julian could stop her, Evelyn walked away.

Leaving behind a family secret far more dangerous than any of them had imagined.

Because now Julian knew the conspiracy had begun before he was even born.

And Clara's disappearance had only been the latest chapter.

To be continued.
