CHAPTER 7 — The Man Julian Trusted

CHAPTER 7 — The Man Julian Trusted

Julian had spent four years trusting the wrong people.

He had trusted the police officers assigned to Clara's disappearance.

He had trusted investigators.

He had trusted business partners.

He had trusted family.

But above all, he had trusted one man.

Daniel Mercer.

His closest friend.

His chief of security.

The man who had stood beside Julian through every search, every funeral, every sleepless night.

The man who had promised him:

"I will find Clara, even if it takes the rest of my life."

Now Julian was staring at a security file bearing Daniel's signature.

And beneath that signature was a single sentence:

SUBJECT LOCATED. DO NOT DISCLOSE TO JULIAN VANCE.

Julian read it twice.

Then a third time.

His hands went cold.

Clara stood beside him.

"What is it?"

Julian didn't answer.

He slid the file across the table.

Clara read it.

Her face changed.

"Daniel?"

Julian nodded.

"The man I trusted most."

The file had been recovered from an encrypted server beneath the estate.

It contained four years of surveillance reports.

Not reports about Clara.

Reports about Julian.

Every time Julian traveled to search for his wife, someone recorded it.

Every investigator he hired was documented.

Every hotel room.

Every phone call.

Every private meeting.

The reports were incredibly detailed.

And almost all of them had been approved by Daniel.

Julian turned page after page.

There was one report dated six months after Clara disappeared.

JULIAN VANCE HAS HIRED A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR IN MADRID.

Another:

JULIAN WILL TRAVEL TO PRAGUE TOMORROW.

Another:

JULIAN BELIEVES CLARA MAY HAVE BEEN TAKEN THROUGH THE NORTHERN ROUTE.

Someone had been watching him every step of the way.

Someone had been telling Victoria where he was searching.

Clara whispered:

"That's why they were always ahead of you."

Julian nodded.

"They knew where I was going before I got there."

He kept reading.

Then he found something that made his stomach turn.

A report dated four years earlier.

The night Clara disappeared.

SUBJECT CLARA VANCE SECURED AT VANCE ESTATE.

Julian froze.

"Secured."

Clara stared at the page.

"That's how they described me."

Julian continued.

SUBJECT WILL REMAIN IN WEST WING UNTIL FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS.

Below it was Daniel's signature.

Julian closed the folder.

"He knew."

Daniel arrived at the estate forty minutes later.

He walked through the front doors as casually as he had done thousands of times.

"Julian."

He stopped when he saw Clara.

For one second, genuine shock crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

Daniel was an expert at controlling his emotions.

Julian had always admired that about him.

Now it frightened him.

Daniel looked at Clara.

"You're alive."

Clara's eyes hardened.

"I was never dead."

Daniel looked at Julian.

"What happened?"

Julian said nothing.

He placed the file on the table.

Daniel looked down.

His face went pale.

But only for a moment.

Then he sighed.

"I can explain."

Julian laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"That's what everyone says."

Daniel sat down.

"You need to hear me before you make a decision."

"You signed the reports."

"Yes."

"You knew where Clara was."

Daniel looked at Clara.

"I knew."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"Four years."

"I know."

"Four years while I searched."

"I know."

"You watched me destroy myself."

Daniel looked away.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Julian stepped forward.

"Don't you dare say that."

Daniel stood.

"You don't understand what Victoria had."

"What did she have?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Proof."

"Of what?"

"That your family had murdered someone."

Silence.

Julian stared.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Clara.

"Her father."

Clara froze.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father didn't die in an accident."

Clara's face went white.

Julian looked at him.

"Who killed him?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Julian grabbed the back of a chair.

"Who?"

Daniel whispered:

"Evelyn."

Clara stepped backward.

"No."

Daniel continued.

"Your father discovered the Vance Legacy Trust."

"What did he know?"

"He knew Evelyn was moving money through shell companies."

Clara shook her head.

"My father was a banker."

"Exactly."

Daniel looked at Julian.

"He discovered that the Vance family had been laundering assets through companies connected to Alexander Sterling."

Julian's face hardened.

"And your father?"

"Refused to cooperate."

"What happened?"

"He died."

Clara closed her eyes.

"Victoria knew."

"Yes."

"Why would Victoria help Evelyn?"

Daniel sighed.

"Because Evelyn had something on her."

"What?"

"Her brother."

Julian frowned.

"Victoria's brother?"

Daniel nodded.

"Her younger brother disappeared years ago."

"Where is he?"

Daniel looked toward the window.

"Dead."

Victoria had been protecting the person she believed responsible for his death.

Evelyn.

Julian suddenly understood.

"This was never just about money."

"No."

"It was about leverage."

"Yes."

Daniel sat down again.

"I was recruited by Evelyn twelve years ago."

Julian stared.

"Why?"

"Because she knew I was working security for your father."

"So you betrayed him."

"I protected him."

Julian shook his head.

"You can't have it both ways."

"I was trying to keep the family from collapsing."

"By helping them imprison my wife?"

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I didn't know they would keep her for four years."

Clara spoke quietly.

"You knew I was there."

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

"You heard me begging."

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

"You heard me asking for Julian."

"Yes."

"Did you ever tell him?"

"No."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"Then you chose them."

Daniel had no answer.

Julian walked to the window.

He remembered Daniel at the airport.

Daniel telling him:

"Don't worry. We'll find her."

Daniel driving him to another city.

Daniel handing him photographs.

Daniel sitting beside him at three in the morning.

All of it had been a performance.

Or had it?

Julian turned.

"Why did you help me search?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because I wanted to know where you were."

Julian froze.

"So Victoria could stay ahead of me."

Daniel nodded.

"I gave her your locations."

"Every time?"

"Almost every time."

Julian's face hardened.

"And when I got close?"

Daniel said nothing.

"You moved Clara."

Daniel looked away.

"Yes."

Julian's fist struck the table.

The sound echoed through the room.

Clara flinched.

Julian immediately stopped.

He looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She nodded.

Then she asked Daniel:

"Where did they move me?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Three places."

"Where?"

"First, the estate."

"Then?"

"An old clinic."

Clara's face changed.

"The clinic."

Julian looked at her.

"What?"

"I remember a smell."

"What smell?"

"Antiseptic."

Daniel nodded.

"That was the clinic."

"Why was I there?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because you gave birth."

Clara stopped breathing.

Julian stared.

"You said the child was born at the estate."

"I lied."

"Why?"

"Because Evelyn ordered me to."

Clara whispered:

"Where is my baby?"

Daniel looked down.

"I don't know."

Julian stepped toward him.

"You better know."

"I know where the records were sent."

"Where?"

"To a private medical facility in Vermont."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"Name."

Daniel looked at him.

"St. Alden Children's Center."

Clara's heart raced.

"That's where Nora went."

Julian immediately understood.

"Nora has been trying to lead us there."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I was afraid."

Julian's voice became cold.

"Of Victoria?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Daniel whispered:

"Of the man who owns the facility."

Julian frowned.

"Who?"

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Alexander Sterling."

Silence.

Alexander Sterling.

The man whose name had appeared in every secret.

The man supposedly dead.

The man who might be Julian's biological father.

Clara stared at Daniel.

"He's alive?"

Daniel nodded.

"And he's been hiding the child?"

"I believe so."

Julian felt something inside him break.

"Why?"

Daniel answered:

"Because the child is the only person who can expose him."

"Expose him for what?"

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then his expression changed.

He had heard something.

Footsteps.

Julian reached for his phone.

The lights suddenly went out.

Clara gasped.

Daniel stood.

"Get down."

A gunshot shattered the window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Julian pulled Clara behind the desk.

Another shot.

Daniel moved toward the window.

"Stay down!"

Julian looked at him.

For the first time in four years, he saw the man he remembered.

The protector.

The friend.

The soldier.

Daniel pulled a weapon from beneath his jacket.

He moved toward the hallway.

Julian grabbed his arm.

"Where are you going?"

"To stop them."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Victoria."

Another gunshot echoed.

Then silence.

Daniel disappeared through the door.

Julian waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Nothing.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

From Daniel.

I lied about one thing.

Julian's heart stopped.

Another message arrived.

I didn't help Victoria because she threatened me.

A third.

I helped her because I was there the night Clara disappeared.

Julian stared at the screen.

Then the final message appeared.

And I was the one who opened the door.

Julian's blood ran cold.

Clara looked at him.

"What?"

Julian slowly turned the phone toward her.

She read the message.

Her face went white.

"The door..."

She whispered.

"I remember."

Julian stared.

"What do you remember?"

Clara closed her eyes.

The memory returned.

Rain.

A hallway.

A key turning.

A door opening.

And a man standing in the doorway.

She had seen him before.

Four years ago.

The night she disappeared.

Not Victoria.

Not Arthur.

Not Evelyn.

Daniel.

Clara opened her eyes.

"He was there."

Julian's voice was barely audible.

"You remember?"

She nodded.

"He looked at me."

"And?"

Clara began trembling.

"He said something."

"What?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

She whispered:

"I'm sorry, Clara. Your husband will never find you."

Julian stared at the darkness.

His closest friend had not merely helped hide Clara.

He had been there when she was taken.

And now he was gone.

But before Julian could react, another message appeared.

If you want Clara's son alive, don't trust anyone at St. Alden.

Then the phone went silent.

Outside, a black car disappeared into the night.

And Julian finally understood.

The search for his wife had never been a failed investigation.

It had been a carefully controlled hunt.

He had been the prey.

Clara had been the prisoner.

And Daniel had been one of the people holding the cage closed.

But somewhere beyond the reach of the estate, a four-year-old boy was waiting.

May you like

And Julian was finally coming for him.

To be continued.
