CHAPTER 11 – THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME

CHAPTER 11 – THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME

For twelve years, Luca Costello believed the hardest thing in life was surviving.

He was wrong.

Survival was simple.

You wake up.

You breathe.

You endure.

You fight another day.

But coming back...

That was harder.

Because returning meant facing everything you missed.

Every birthday.

Every memory.

Every moment someone needed you.

And nobody needed him more than Maya.

The morning after the press conference, Luca did not go to the office.

He did not meet with lawyers.

He did not review company reports.

He did not chase Adrian.

For the first time in years...

The most important thing on his schedule was a child.

Maya was sitting at the kitchen table when he arrived.

A bowl of cereal in front of her.

Her hair messy.

Her homework scattered around.

A completely ordinary morning.

And Luca found himself staring.

Because ordinary was something he had lost.

"You are staring."

Maya said.

Luca smiled.

"Am I?"

"Yes."

"Sorry."

"Why?"

He thought about it.

"Because I missed moments like this."

Maya looked confused.

"This?"

"Breakfast."

She looked at the table.

"You're sad about breakfast?"

Luca laughed quietly.

"No."

"Then what?"

He looked at her.

"I'm sad I wasn't here for it."

Maya became quiet.

Children understood more than adults believed.

She placed her spoon down.

"Mom said you didn't know."

"I didn't."

"She said someone made you disappear."

Luca nodded.

"That's true."

Maya studied him.

"Are you angry?"

The question surprised him.

"At who?"

"The person who did it."

Luca looked away.

Because that was the question everyone asked.

Were you angry?

Did you want revenge?

Did you want punishment?

But Maya asked differently.

Not as a reporter.

Not as a lawyer.

As a child.

"I was."

"Are you still?"

Luca thought carefully.

"Sometimes."

"That's okay."

He looked at her.

"You think so?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because being angry means something mattered."

Again.

A child saying things adults spent years trying to understand.

Later that afternoon, Luca took Maya to the baseball field.

Not the one at his estate.

A public field near the lake.

A place where nobody knew his name.

No employees.

No security.

No business.

Just a father and daughter.

Maya handed him the baseball.

"Your turn."

Luca looked at it.

"You're still doing this?"

"Yes."

"I already threw one."

"That was before."

"Before what?"

"Before you became my dad."

The sentence stopped him.

Not because it hurt.

Because it healed something.

He threw the ball.

It was not perfect.

It curved badly.

It landed nowhere near the glove.

Maya ran after it.

"Still terrible."

Luca laughed.

"Thank you."

"But better."

He looked at her.

"Better?"

"Yes."

She picked up the ball.

"Yesterday you couldn't stand."

"Today you threw."

A pause.

"That's progress."

Luca realized something.

Maya did not see him as broken.

She saw him becoming.

That night, Elena watched them from the porch.

"You look happy."

Luca turned.

"I am."

The answer came too quickly.

Almost surprising him.

Elena smiled.

"I haven't seen that in you before."

"What?"

"Peace."

Luca looked at the field.

"I don't know if I deserve it."

Elena shook her head.

"That's not how peace works."

For years, Luca had believed he had to earn everything.

Power.

Respect.

Success.

Love.

Maybe that was his mistake.

But peace did not last long.

Because the past was still waiting.

The call came at midnight.

Unknown number.

Luca answered.

"Who is this?"

A man's voice.

Older.

Tired.

"Mr. Costello."

Luca froze.

"Who are you?"

"I was the doctor."

Silence.

The room seemed colder.

"The doctor who treated you twelve years ago."

Dr. Victor Hale.

Luca gripped the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere safe."

"Safe from who?"

A pause.

"From the people who paid me."

Luca stood.

"What did you do?"

The man breathed heavily.

"I signed the reports."

Silence.

"I changed the diagnosis."

Luca closed his eyes.

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid."

The answer was almost worse.

Not greed.

Not ambition.

Fear.

"Who ordered it?"

Luca asked.

The doctor hesitated.

Then:

"Your father."

Everything stopped.

Luca said nothing.

Because the words did not make sense.

His father.

The man who wrote the letter.

The man who claimed someone else was responsible.

The man who was supposed to protect him.

"No."

The doctor's voice became quieter.

"Mr. Costello..."

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

"Your father didn't want you dead."

A pause.

"He wanted to save you."

Luca's breathing changed.

"Save me?"

"From becoming what he became."

The call ended.

Luca stood alone in the dark.

For twelve years, he had searched for the person who stole his life.

Now he discovered something impossible.

The man who started it...

May have been trying to stop something worse.

The next morning, Luca met Dr. Hale.

The doctor looked destroyed.

Older than his years.

A man carrying twelve years of guilt.

"I need the truth."

Luca said.

The doctor nodded.

"You deserve it."

The story began twelve years ago.

Before the paralysis.

Before the poison.

Before Maya.

Luca's father had discovered something.

Something about the empire.

Something about Luca's closest people.

Something that convinced him his own son was in danger.

But before he could explain everything...

He died.

And the secret remained buried.

"What secret?"

Luca asked.

Victor looked at him.

"The empire you inherited..."

A pause.

"Was never built the way you thought."

Luca felt the room shift.

"What does that mean?"

"It means your father made enemies."

"Everyone does."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"Not enemies."

He lowered his voice.

"Survivors."

That evening, Luca returned home.

Maya was drawing.

She looked up.

"You're thinking too much."

Luca smiled slightly.

"How do you know?"

"Because your eyebrows do that thing."

"What thing?"

"This."

She copied his serious expression.

For the first time that day...

Luca laughed.

And in that moment, he understood.

No matter how dark the truth became...

He had something he did not have twelve years ago.

A reason to come home.

But somewhere else...

Adrian Vale opened a file.

Inside was the final secret.

The one even Luca's father had hidden.

He looked at the document.

And whispered:

"You should have stayed away from the truth."

Because the next move would not destroy Luca's empire.

May you like

It would destroy his understanding of his own family.
