CHAPTER 8 – THE WOMAN WHO NEVER WAITED

CHAPTER 8 – THE WOMAN WHO NEVER WAITED

Luca Costello had spent his entire life believing that time belonged to people powerful enough to control it.

Money could buy opportunities.

Influence could open doors.

Fear could make people move faster.

But there was one thing Luca finally understood after twelve years in a wheelchair.

Time did not belong to anyone.

It moved forward whether people were ready or not.

And while Luca was trapped inside a body that refused to obey him...

Elena Harper had been living.

Without him.

That was the part Luca struggled with most.

Not the betrayal.

Not the poison.

Not even the years stolen from him.

It was the realization that the world had continued.

Maya had grown.

Elena had changed.

Life had happened.

And Luca had been frozen in the middle of his own story.

He found Elena sitting outside the small coffee shop near her apartment.

No security.

No expensive clothes.

No people waiting for her.

Just Elena.

A cup of coffee.

A book.

A quiet afternoon.

The sight affected him more than he expected.

Because this was the woman he remembered.

But also someone completely different.

"You found me."

Elena did not look surprised.

Luca stopped.

"You knew I would?"

She smiled faintly.

"You always were terrible at pretending you don't care."

That sentence belonged to another lifetime.

Before money.

Before power.

Before pain.

Luca sat across from her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Elena said:

"You walked."

He looked down.

"Yes."

Her eyes softened.

"I saw."

"And?"

She smiled sadly.

"I was happy."

The answer surprised him.

He expected anger.

Distance.

Maybe resentment.

Not happiness.

"Why?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because I always knew you were more than what happened to you."

The words hit him harder than any accusation could.

"Elena."

She waited.

"I need to apologize."

Her expression changed.

"For what?"

"For leaving."

A long silence.

"You didn't leave."

"I disappeared."

"Yes."

She looked away.

"And that hurt."

Luca nodded.

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"You don't."

He accepted that.

Because she was right.

He knew pain.

But he did not know hers.

"I waited."

The words were simple.

But they carried years.

"I waited because I thought you were coming back."

Luca lowered his eyes.

"I would have."

"I know."

She looked at him.

"That's what makes it worse."

He frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Because if you had chosen to leave..."

She swallowed.

"I could have hated you."

Silence.

"But you didn't choose."

Her eyes became wet.

"You were taken away."

For years, Luca had blamed himself.

For not finding her.

For not protecting her.

For not knowing about Maya.

But Elena had been carrying a different kind of pain.

The pain of believing she had been abandoned.

"I raised her alone."

Luca looked up.

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You know the fact."

A pause.

"You don't know the nights."

Luca said nothing.

"The fevers."

"The bills."

"The fear."

"The moments when she asked why everyone else had a father and she didn't."

Every word landed.

Not as an attack.

As truth.

"What did you tell her?"

Elena looked at the street.

"That her father was someone who loved her."

Luca froze.

"Even though you thought I left?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She smiled slightly.

"Because I didn't want her to grow up believing she wasn't worth staying for."

Luca looked away.

Because suddenly he understood something.

Elena had protected Maya from the pain of his absence.

Even when she believed he was responsible.

"You were a good mother."

Elena looked at him.

"I had to be."

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You chose to be."

For a moment...

The walls between them became thinner.

That evening, Luca returned home late.

Maya was waiting.

She sat on the porch with two cups of hot chocolate.

"You were gone."

Luca smiled.

"I had something to do."

"Important?"

He thought about it.

"Yes."

"What?"

He sat beside her.

"Talking to your mother."

Maya nodded.

"She likes you."

Luca looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

"Because she doesn't look angry when she says your name."

Again.

That impossible child.

Seeing everything.

"Do you like me?"

The question came before he could stop himself.

Maya looked offended.

"Obviously."

"Obviously?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

She thought.

Then answered:

"Because you listen."

Simple.

But Luca understood.

Most people wanted things from him.

Money.

Protection.

Approval.

Maya only wanted his attention.

The next morning, Luca made a decision.

One that surprised everyone.

He reduced his public schedule.

Canceled unnecessary meetings.

Changed his priorities.

His executives were confused.

"You are giving up control?"

One asked.

Luca looked at him.

"No."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Learning what matters."

But while Luca was rebuilding his personal life...

Adrian was preparing.

The first attack came quietly.

A newspaper article.

A headline designed to create doubt.

COSTELLO RECOVERY: MIRACLE OR MANIPULATION?

The article questioned Luca's health.

His leadership.

His decisions.

But the worst part...

It mentioned Elena.

And Maya.

Luca read it once.

Then placed it down.

Marco looked at him.

"What do we do?"

The old Luca would have destroyed the newspaper.

The old Luca would have crushed whoever wrote it.

Instead...

He said:

"Nothing."

Marco looked surprised.

"Nothing?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

Luca looked toward the garden.

Where Maya was playing.

"Because Adrian wants me angry."

A pause.

"He wants me to become the man everyone expects."

"And you won't?"

Luca shook his head.

"No."

That night, Elena received an anonymous envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Luca.

Twelve years ago.

Before the collapse.

Before Maya was born.

On the back was a message.

HE NEVER TOLD YOU WHO HE REALLY WAS.

Elena stared at the words.

Because that was the question she had avoided.

Who was Luca Costello?

Not the man she loved.

Not the father Maya needed.

But the man the world feared.

When Luca arrived at her apartment, Elena was waiting.

She held the photograph.

"You lied to me."

Luca stopped.

"What?"

"You never told me everything."

He looked at the picture.

Then at her.

And understood.

The past had finally caught up.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

He had no answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

And Elena had spent twelve years paying the price for complications.

"I need to know something."

Elena whispered.

"Who are you?"

Luca looked at her.

The question was not about his name.

She already knew that.

It was about the darkness behind it.

And for the first time...

Luca realized something.

Winning the war against Adrian would be easier than answering this question.

Because enemies could be defeated.

But trust...

May you like

Had to be earned.
