CHAPTER 12 – THE LAST BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 12 – THE LAST BETRAYAL

Luca Costello had spent twelve years searching for the person who ruined his life.

He searched through medical records.

Business transactions.

Private conversations.

Hidden accounts.

Every answer led him deeper into the past.

But the truth he discovered was not the truth he wanted.

Because the closer he came to the beginning...

The more he realized the betrayal had never been simple.

It was not one person.

It was not one decision.

It was a chain.

One person making a choice.

Another person hiding it.

Another person benefiting from it.

And at the center of everything...

Was his own family.

The file Dr. Victor Hale gave him remained unopened on his desk.

Luca had not touched it for three hours.

Not because he was afraid of what was inside.

Because he already knew.

Whatever was written there would change something.

And Luca had spent enough time watching his life change without his permission.

Elena found him sitting in the study.

The same place where he first learned Maya was his daughter.

The same place where he discovered his legs had not been destroyed.

The same place where every truth seemed to arrive.

"You haven't slept."

Luca looked up.

"Neither have you."

She smiled faintly.

"That's different."

"Why?"

"Because I spent twelve years worrying."

A pause.

"You only recently started."

The sentence was painful.

But fair.

Elena sat across from him.

"What did the doctor tell you?"

Luca looked at the file.

"That my father was involved."

Her expression changed.

"Your father?"

"Yes."

"But you said he wrote that letter."

"He did."

"Then something doesn't make sense."

Luca nodded.

"Exactly."

For years, Luca trusted facts.

Numbers.

Documents.

Evidence.

But now he understood something.

People were complicated.

A person could love you and hurt you.

Protect you and destroy you.

Save you and betray you.

The file contained only a few pages.

But those pages carried twelve years of consequences.

The first document was a medical authorization.

Signed by Luca's father.

The second was a payment record.

A large transfer.

To Dr. Victor Hale.

The third...

Was a message.

Luca read it silently.

Then read it again.

Elena watched his face.

"What does it say?"

He did not answer immediately.

Finally:

"My father knew someone was planning to kill me."

The room went silent.

"What?"

Luca continued reading.

"He discovered a plan to remove me from control of the company."

"By who?"

He turned the page.

And stopped.

The name was there.

A name he knew.

A name that made everything colder.

Richard Costello.

His uncle.

Elena looked at him.

"Luca?"

"My uncle."

For a moment, nothing moved.

Richard Costello.

His father's younger brother.

The man who attended family dinners.

The man who gave Luca advice when he was young.

The man who told him:

"Family protects family."

Apparently...

Not always.

The plan had been simple.

Richard wanted control.

But Luca's father refused to hand over the empire.

So Richard looked for another way.

A permanent solution.

But then Luca's father discovered the plan.

And he acted.

"He hired Adrian."

Elena said.

Luca looked at her.

"Yes."

Everything became clearer.

Adrian had not started as the enemy.

He had been chosen as protection.

Luca's father believed Adrian was the only person close enough to Luca to keep him alive.

So when the threat came...

Adrian took control.

But somewhere along the way...

Adrian stopped protecting Luca.

And started controlling him.

"He was supposed to keep me safe."

Luca whispered.

"Instead, he stole my life."

The worst betrayals were not always planned.

Sometimes they began as good intentions.

Then became something else.

That afternoon, Luca confronted Adrian.

Not with anger.

With the truth.

Adrian was waiting.

Almost as if he knew.

"You found it."

Luca stopped.

"You knew."

Adrian looked tired.

"Yes."

"You knew my father hired you."

"Yes."

"You knew about Richard."

"Yes."

The calmness was almost unbearable.

"Then why?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Why did I continue?"

"Yes."

A long silence.

Then Adrian answered.

"Because your father was right about one thing."

"What?"

"You were in danger."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"From who?"

Adrian looked directly at him.

"From yourself."

The words angered Luca.

"You poisoned me."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I know."

"You took twelve years."

"I know."

"You kept me away from my daughter."

The guilt on Adrian's face appeared for the first time.

"I know."

Luca stepped closer.

"Do you understand what you stole?"

Adrian whispered:

"Every day."

That answer surprised him.

Because Adrian wasn't defending himself.

He was confessing.

"I could have saved you."

Adrian said.

"But I failed."

Luca stared.

"Failed?"

"You think I wanted you trapped?"

A pause.

"You think I enjoyed watching you lose everything?"

His voice broke.

"I watched you become the same man you were becoming before your father died."

"What man?"

Adrian looked at him.

"A man who trusted nobody."

For a second, Luca saw it.

Not innocence.

But regret.

Then Adrian made his mistake.

The mistake that changed everything.

He reached into his pocket.

Luca immediately reacted.

Years of instinct.

Security moved.

But Adrian wasn't reaching for a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of Maya.

Taken outside the school.

Luca froze.

"Why do you have that?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"I wasn't the only person watching."

The air disappeared.

"Who?"

Adrian looked toward the window.

"Richard."

Suddenly the past was no longer the biggest threat.

The present was.

That night, Luca increased security around Elena and Maya.

Not because he wanted control.

Because he understood.

Someone had already taken twelve years.

He would not allow anyone to take another day.

But at midnight...

The alarm at the estate activated.

Luca woke instantly.

A guard's voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Costello."

"What happened?"

A pause.

Then:

"Someone entered the property."

Luca's heart tightened.

"Who?"

The answer came.

A single name.

"Richard Costello."

Luca stood in the darkness.

The man who started everything...

May you like

Had finally come home.
