CHAPTER 9 – THE ENEMY IN THE MIRROR

CHAPTER 9 – THE ENEMY IN THE MIRROR
Luca Costello had spent twelve years asking one question.
Who did this to me?
For twelve years, he imagined the answer would come with a face filled with hatred.
A stranger.
An enemy.
Someone who wanted him destroyed.
He was prepared for that.
He knew how to fight enemies.
What he was not prepared for...
Was discovering that the most dangerous enemy was the man staring back at him in the mirror.
Not because Luca had poisoned himself.
Not because he had caused his own suffering.
But because he finally understood something painful.
The life he built had created the conditions for someone like Adrian Vale to exist.
The photograph Elena held remained on the table.
A younger Luca.
A different man.
Confident.
Untouchable.
The kind of man who believed control was the same thing as protection.
Elena watched him carefully.
"Who were you?"
The question was quiet.
But it carried more weight than anger.
Luca looked away.
"I was someone who thought nothing could hurt me."
"That's not an answer."
"No."
He nodded.
"It's not."
The room was silent.
Then Luca finally said the words he had avoided.
"I was dangerous."
Elena did not move.
"I know."
The answer surprised him.
"You knew?"
"I knew you were not a normal man."
A pause.
"The way people treated you. The way they listened when you spoke. The way they became careful around you."
She looked at him.
"I knew there was something you weren't telling me."
"Why didn't you leave?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"Because the man I knew was not the man everyone else feared."
That answer hurt.
Because Luca wasn't sure if it was true anymore.
The next morning, Luca returned to the office earlier than usual.
Not because of business.
Because of reflection.
He walked through the empty halls of Costello Tower.
A place built from ambition.
A monument to the man he had been.
Every floor carried memories.
Every room carried decisions.
Every success carried a cost.
Marco found him standing outside his old office.
"You haven't been in there for years."
"I know."
"Why now?"
Luca opened the door.
"Because I need to remember."
The office looked exactly the same.
Almost.
The furniture.
The paintings.
The view.
Everything frozen.
Like a museum.
Of a man who no longer existed.
On the desk was a photograph.
Luca before the accident.
Adrian beside him.
Two men building an empire.
Two friends.
Or so Luca thought.
"How long?"
Luca asked.
Marco understood.
"How long was Adrian planning this?"
"Still investigating."
"Estimate."
Marco hesitated.
"Years."
The answer was not surprising.
But it still hurt.
Adrian had not stolen one moment.
He had stolen slowly.
Patiently.
Carefully.
That was the most frightening thing about him.
He wasn't impulsive.
He wasn't reckless.
He was committed.
Later that day, Luca received a message.
Not from Marco.
Not from Elena.
From Adrian.
We need to talk. Alone.
Luca stared at the screen.
Then replied.
Agreed.
The meeting took place in the old private club where Luca and Adrian used to celebrate victories.
A place filled with memories.
And now betrayal.
Adrian arrived first.
He looked tired.
Older.
For the first time, Luca noticed it.
Adrian was not fearless.
He was exhausted.
Because keeping a lie alive for twelve years required constant effort.
"You look different."
Adrian said.
Luca sat down.
"I am different."
Adrian smiled faintly.
"Because of the girl?"
Luca's expression changed.
"Careful."
"There it is."
"What?"
"The old Luca."
Adrian leaned forward.
"The man everyone feared."
Luca remained silent.
"You think I'm the villain."
Adrian said.
"Aren't you?"
Adrian laughed quietly.
"Do you know why I did what I did?"
"No."
"Because you were destroying yourself."
Luca stared.
"Excuse me?"
"You built everything. You controlled everything. You trusted nobody."
Adrian's voice became emotional.
"You were becoming exactly like your father."
Luca's expression hardened.
"Do not talk about my father."
"Why?"
"Because you don't get to pretend this was kindness."
Adrian looked away.
For a moment, Luca saw something.
Regret.
Real regret.
Then it disappeared.
"You had everything."
Adrian said.
"A name."
"Power."
"Respect."
"You don't know what it's like to watch someone destroy himself."
Luca stared at him.
"And your solution was to poison me?"
Silence.
There.
The first crack.
Adrian did not deny it.
Luca leaned forward.
"You could have walked away."
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because I knew you."
Adrian's eyes hardened.
"You would never stop."
The sentence revealed everything.
Adrian wasn't trying to save Luca.
He was trying to control him.
"Who helped you?"
Luca asked.
Adrian smiled.
"You still think this was only me?"
The room became colder.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian stood.
"It means you have been looking at the wrong enemy."
Before leaving, Adrian stopped.
"Ask yourself something, Luca."
"What?"
"Who benefited most from you being powerless?"
Then he walked away.
The question followed Luca home.
Because he knew Adrian.
Adrian lied.
But he rarely lied completely.
That night, Luca searched through old records.
Family records.
Business records.
Medical records.
Everything.
Until he found something.
A name.
A connection.
A person he had never considered.
The original doctor who diagnosed his "stroke."
The doctor who confirmed his paralysis.
The doctor who signed every report.
Dr. Victor Hale.
The same man who had treated him.
The same man who had protected his reputation.
The same man who disappeared after Luca's collapse.
Luca stared at the file.
Then his phone rang.
Elena.
He answered.
"Luca."
Her voice was different.
"What happened?"
"I found something."
A pause.
"So did I."
His expression changed.
"What?"
Elena hesitated.
"The photograph."
"Yes?"
"I found out who sent it."
Silence.
"Who?"
Her voice dropped.
"Your father."
Luca froze.
Impossible.
His father had been dead for years.
"Elena."
"I know how it sounds."
"Where is the proof?"
"I found a letter."
Luca stood slowly.
"What letter?"
"The letter he wrote twelve years ago."
A cold feeling moved through him.
Because suddenly...
The past was not buried.
It had been waiting.
And Luca finally understood.
The enemy was not just Adrian.
Not just the person who poisoned him.
The enemy was the entire system built around his silence.
A system created by people who believed Luca Costello was easier to control when he could not stand.
But now he was standing.
And the mirror showed him something terrifying.
The man who had been broken...
Was becoming the man everyone had feared.
May you like
The only question was whether he could become something better.
