CHAPTER 7 – THE WAR INSIDE THE EMPIRE

CHAPTER 7 – THE WAR INSIDE THE EMPIRE

The day Luca Costello stood up again, the world did not celebrate.

Not everyone.

Some people celebrated because they loved him.

Some because they respected him.

Some because they believed his recovery meant stability.

But there was another group.

The people who had spent twelve years building their lives around the idea that Luca would never rise again.

Those people were not inspired.

They were terrified.

Because a sleeping lion was convenient.

A waking lion was a problem.

The first sign of trouble came from inside his own company.

Not a public attack.

Not a dramatic betrayal.

Something much more dangerous.

Silence.

People stopped answering certain questions.

Reports arrived late.

Meetings were suddenly rescheduled.

Executives who once appeared in Luca's office every morning became difficult to reach.

Luca noticed immediately.

He always did.

A person could lie with words.

They could not lie with behavior.

"How many?"

Luca asked Marco.

They were sitting in the study.

The same room where Luca had spent years watching the world move without him.

Marco looked down at the documents.

"Seven executives."

"Seven?"

"Seven senior people who supported Adrian during your recovery."

Luca tapped his fingers against the armrest.

Not from anger.

Thinking.

"Recovery."

Marco looked at him.

"Sir?"

"Interesting word."

"What do you mean?"

"For twelve years everyone called it recovery."

A pause.

"But I wasn't recovering."

His eyes hardened.

"I was being managed."

That was the difference.

A sick man needed help.

A controlled man needed supervision.

And Luca Costello finally understood.

Adrian had never been trying to save him.

He had been trying to preserve him.

Alive.

Weak.

Useful.

The next morning, Luca returned to headquarters.

The Costello Tower stood in the center of Chicago.

Forty-eight floors of glass and steel.

The building carried his name.

But for twelve years...

He had barely entered it.

Employees gathered when he arrived.

Some surprised.

Some nervous.

Luca moved slowly with the assistance of his cane.

Not because he needed to prove anything.

Because he wanted them to see.

The man they had buried was walking back into his own empire.

The lobby became silent.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally, someone spoke.

"Mr. Costello."

Luca looked up.

"Good morning."

The employee smiled nervously.

"Welcome back."

Those two words followed him all the way to the elevator.

Welcome back.

As if he had been gone.

And in many ways...

He had.

The executive meeting began at nine.

Adrian was already there.

Of course he was.

He sat at the head of the table.

Luca noticed.

Small things mattered.

Adrian had always sat beside him.

Never across.

Never at the head.

Not until now.

"Luca."

Adrian stood.

A perfect performance.

Concerned friend.

Loyal partner.

"I'm glad you're feeling better."

Luca walked to the chair.

"I never stopped being myself."

Adrian smiled.

"Of course."

Everyone sat.

Reports began.

Numbers.

Projects.

Forecasts.

Everything normal.

Too normal.

Then Luca asked:

"Why was the medical trust account transferred?"

The room froze.

Adrian's expression barely changed.

"Excuse me?"

"The account used for my care."

A pause.

"Why was control moved to you?"

Silence.

Adrian leaned back.

"Because you were unable to manage your affairs."

"Unable."

Luca repeated the word.

"Interesting."

Adrian looked at him.

"Are you suggesting I did something wrong?"

Luca smiled.

"I'm suggesting nothing."

A pause.

"I'm asking questions."

That was worse.

Because questions meant investigation.

After the meeting, Adrian followed him.

"You are making a mistake."

Luca stopped.

"Am I?"

"You're turning people against each other."

"No."

He looked at Adrian.

"I'm finding out who was already against me."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand the world you are walking back into."

Luca looked down briefly.

At his own feet.

Then back at him.

"I spent twelve years unable to walk."

A pause.

"I understand more than you think."

Meanwhile, Elena watched the news at home.

The television showed Luca leaving his headquarters.

Reporters surrounded him.

Questions everywhere.

"Mr. Costello, are rumors true that you are reclaiming control?"

"Mr. Costello, are you investigating your own company?"

"Mr. Costello, do you believe someone tried to harm you?"

Luca stopped.

The old Luca would have ignored them.

The old Luca would have walked away.

Instead...

He answered.

"I believe every person deserves the truth."

Then he left.

Maya watched beside Elena.

"He's famous."

Elena smiled slightly.

"Yes."

"Is that good?"

Elena thought about it.

"Sometimes."

Maya looked at the screen.

"He doesn't look happy."

Elena looked at her daughter.

"You notice that?"

Maya shrugged.

"He looks like he's fighting."

She was right.

Because Luca was fighting.

Not just for his company.

Not just for revenge.

For the life stolen from him.

That night, Luca received a package.

No sender.

Only his name.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

From twelve years ago.

Luca and Elena.

Together.

Before everything happened.

His heart stopped.

Because someone had written a message on the back.

Five words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED GONE.

Luca stared at it.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

"You were supposed to remain broken."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Who is this?"

A quiet laugh.

"Someone who knows exactly what happens when men like you forget their place."

The call ended.

For the first time in years...

Luca felt something he thought he had lost.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Instinct.

The instinct that built his empire.

The instinct that kept him alive.

He looked at the photograph again.

Then at Maya's drawing beside it.

Two worlds.

The past that destroyed him.

And the future that saved him.

The next morning, Luca made a decision.

One that would change everything.

He called a meeting.

Not with executives.

Not with lawyers.

With everyone.

Every employee.

Every partner.

Every person connected to the Costello empire.

And he had one message.

The empire was not falling.

It was being cleaned.

But Luca didn't know one thing yet.

The war inside his empire was only the beginning.

Because Adrian Vale had not spent twelve years stealing control...

May you like

To simply give it back.
