Chapter 1 – The Wedding Shock

Chapter 1 – The Wedding Shock

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

The laughter that had filled the grand foyer of the Chicago Botanical Gardens faded into an uneasy silence. Conversations stopped in the middle of sentences. Crystal champagne flutes remained suspended halfway to lips. Even the string quartet playing near the marble staircase seemed to lose its rhythm.

Every pair of eyes settled on Maya.

She stood perfectly still in her emerald silk dress, one hand resting lightly against her vintage diamond bracelet—the only piece of jewelry she truly valued. It had belonged to her grandmother, the only person in the family who had ever believed Maya didn't need permission to become extraordinary.

Across from her, Richard Bennett blinked as if he hadn't understood a single word his younger daughter had just spoken.

"$210,000..." he repeated quietly.

The number sounded foreign coming from his mouth.

Maya offered a polite smile.

"My starting salary."

Someone behind them accidentally dropped a champagne glass.

The sharp crack of crystal against marble echoed through the lobby.

Olivia was the first to recover.

She forced a laugh that sounded painfully artificial.

"Oh, please."

She waved a dismissive hand toward the bridesmaids.

"You all know Maya."

The women exchanged uncomfortable glances.

"She's always exaggerating."

Maya didn't answer.

She had spent years defending herself against accusations that never deserved a response.

She wasn't going to start now.

Richard folded his arms.

"If that's true..."

His voice carried the familiar tone Maya had heard throughout her childhood—the one that assumed she was lying until proven otherwise.

"...why didn't you tell us?"

Maya looked directly into his eyes.

"You never asked."

"I've asked you about school plenty of times."

"No."

She shook her head calmly.

"You asked whether I had changed my major."

"You asked whether I'd finally stopped wasting time on research."

"You asked whether I planned to get a 'real job.'"

A few relatives shifted awkwardly.

Maya continued.

"You never once asked if I was happy."

Silence.

"You never asked how I paid my tuition."

"You never asked why I stopped asking you for money."

Her father opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Karen Bennett stepped between them.

Unlike her husband, Maya's mother looked genuinely shaken.

"Maya..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Is it true?"

Maya reached into her purse.

She removed a slim leather folder.

Inside was a copy of her employment agreement.

She handed it to her mother.

Karen stared at the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands began to tremble.

"This..."

She looked up.

"This salary..."

"It's real."

Richard snatched the papers from her hands.

His eyes scanned the page.

His face slowly lost all color.

"I've never even heard of Nova Tech," Olivia muttered.

Maya almost smiled.

"You wouldn't."

"It's one of the fastest-growing artificial intelligence companies in North America," came a voice from behind them.

Everyone turned.

A tall man in his early fifties stood near the entrance wearing a charcoal suit.

Several guests recognized him immediately.

"Ethan Brooks..."

One whispered.

"The tech investor?"

Another guest nodded.

"He sits on three Fortune 500 boards."

Ethan Brooks walked toward Maya with an easy smile.

"There you are."

Maya looked surprised.

"Mr. Brooks."

"I told you to call me Ethan."

He laughed warmly.

"I was beginning to think you'd skipped today's event."

Richard frowned.

"You know my daughter?"

Ethan looked genuinely confused.

"Know her?"

He smiled.

"I've spent the last six months trying to convince her not to accept offers from our competitors."

The silence became even heavier.

Olivia forced another smile.

"So..."

She cleared her throat.

"You two work together?"

"Not exactly."

Ethan glanced proudly toward Maya.

"She's one of the most gifted software architects I've interviewed in twenty-five years."

Richard stared.

"There must be some mistake."

"There isn't."

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"Your daughter built a predictive machine-learning platform during graduate research."

Maya quietly corrected him.

"Undergraduate."

He laughed.

"That's right."

He looked around the room.

"Half the executives in Silicon Valley wanted to hire her."

One of Olivia's bridesmaids leaned toward another.

"I thought she dropped out."

"So did I."

"I heard she couldn't afford tuition."

"My aunt told me her parents were paying everything."

The whispers spread through the foyer like wildfire.

Maya heard every word.

She didn't bother correcting anyone.

The truth was finally speaking for itself.

Richard folded the contract shut.

His pride searched desperately for something to attack.

"If you're making this kind of money..."

He looked at Maya.

"...why are you dressed so..."

He hesitated.

"So modestly?"

Maya glanced down at her emerald dress.

She had chosen it because it was elegant.

Simple.

Timeless.

"It suits me."

Olivia couldn't resist.

"My wedding gown costs more than that dress."

Maya nodded politely.

"I'm sure it does."

The answer somehow felt more humiliating than any insult.

Ethan Brooks noticed the tension immediately.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

Olivia answered before anyone else could.

"We were just catching up."

Her smile looked almost painful.

"My little sister loves surprising people."

Maya looked at her.

"You mean telling the truth."

A wedding coordinator hurried into the lobby.

"We're starting the ceremony in fifteen minutes."

Relieved to escape the awkward conversation, several guests quickly headed toward the glass conservatory.

Others lingered.

Pretending to check their phones while listening to every word.

As the crowd slowly dispersed, Richard grabbed Maya's arm.

"Not here."

His voice was low.

"We're talking privately."

She gently removed his hand.

"I don't think so."

"I'm your father."

"And I'm thirty years old."

His jaw tightened.

"You owe me an explanation."

Maya looked at him for several seconds.

"No."

"I don't."

For the first time in his life...

Richard Bennett had no authority left to threaten her with.

Inside the bridal suite, Olivia slammed the door so hard that one of the makeup artists jumped.

"This is unbelievable!"

She ripped off one of her earrings and threw it onto the vanity.

"Today is supposed to be about me!"

One bridesmaid spoke carefully.

"She didn't actually do anything."

Olivia spun around.

"She humiliated me!"

"She answered Dad's question."

"I don't care!"

Another bridesmaid quietly looked at Maya's employment contract photo she'd secretly taken with her phone.

"Olivia..."

"What?"

"I think..."

She hesitated.

"...your sister might actually be more successful than Trevor."

The room went silent.

Trevor.

Olivia's fiancé.

A respected corporate attorney.

His annual salary had always been Olivia's favorite topic of conversation.

Until now.

Outside the suite...

Karen caught up with Maya.

"Can we please talk?"

Maya stopped walking.

"What about?"

Her mother's eyes filled with regret.

"I didn't know."

"You didn't want to know."

Karen looked down.

"That's different."

"No."

Maya answered softly.

"It really isn't."

The ceremony began beneath a magnificent glass dome filled with autumn flowers.

Rows of white chairs faced an altar surrounded by roses and golden maple leaves.

Maya took her assigned seat.

The very last row.

Exactly where Olivia wanted her.

She didn't mind.

From there, she could see everyone.

Including the guests who kept glancing back at her instead of the bride.

As the music started...

A familiar voice quietly interrupted her thoughts.

"Mind if I sit here?"

Maya looked up.

Ethan Brooks.

"There are plenty of empty seats in front."

He smiled.

"I know."

He lowered his voice.

"But something tells me the most interesting story today..."

He glanced toward the altar where Olivia posed for photographs.

"...isn't happening up there."

Before Maya could answer, her phone vibrated inside her purse.

One new email.

Subject: Confidential – Compensation Adjustment

She frowned.

The message had arrived from Nova Tech's CEO.

She opened it.

Her eyes widened.

The first sentence read:

"After this morning's board meeting, we've unanimously decided to revise your employment package."

Maya's heartbeat quickened.

She scrolled to the next line.

Then froze.

The new number on the screen was so unexpected...

She read it three times to make sure she wasn't imagining it.

May you like

And just as Olivia began walking down the aisle, smiling as if nothing in the world could ruin her perfect day—

Maya realized that by the end of the ceremony, everything in the Bennett family was about to change forever.
