Chapter 8 – Olivia's Desperate Lie

Chapter 8 – Olivia's Desperate Lie

The words hit the room like a thunderclap.

"...he's Maya Bennett's biological father."

Adrian Sinclair's expression hardened instantly.

Richard Bennett, who had been speaking with a group of relatives only a few feet away, turned so abruptly that his champagne glass slipped from his hand.

It shattered across the ballroom floor.

"What did you just say?"

The security manager repeated himself carefully.

"A gentleman at the front gate claims he is Ms. Maya Bennett's biological father."

Silence.

Every conversation in the ballroom stopped.

Karen's face turned white.

Maya frowned.

"What?"

Daniel Bennett slowly stood.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"That's impossible."

The security manager looked uncertain.

"He insists he has documents."

Richard took several quick steps forward.

"Don't let him inside."

The manager hesitated.

"He says if we refuse..."

"...he'll speak to the media waiting outside."

The ballroom collectively held its breath.

News crews had gathered after recognizing Adrian Sinclair and Ethan Brooks arriving at the wedding.

The last thing anyone wanted was a public spectacle.

Especially today.

Before anyone could decide what to do, Olivia suddenly stepped forward.

"I know who he is."

Every head turned toward her.

Richard stared.

"You do?"

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Maya looked confused.

"You've never mentioned this."

Olivia swallowed.

"I didn't want to."

Trevor studied his wife carefully.

Something about her expression felt...

Wrong.

Not frightened.

Calculated.

Olivia took a deep breath.

"I think..."

She looked around the room.

"...it's finally time everyone knows the truth."

Karen whispered,

"What truth?"

Olivia lowered her eyes dramatically.

"Maya wasn't treated differently because Dad loved me more."

She paused.

"It was because..."

Another pause.

"...Dad always suspected Maya wasn't his daughter."

The ballroom erupted into shocked murmurs.

Maya froze.

"What?"

Richard looked horrified.

"Olivia!"

She continued before he could interrupt.

"I overheard them arguing years ago."

Karen stared in disbelief.

"What are you talking about?"

"You cried."

Olivia pointed toward her mother.

"I heard you."

"You said..."

She took another breath.

"...you didn't know how to tell Dad."

Karen shook her head violently.

"No!"

"Stop."

"You've misunderstood."

But Olivia wasn't listening anymore.

Months of jealousy.

Years of insecurity.

The humiliation of the day.

Everything spilled out at once.

"It all makes sense now."

She turned toward the guests.

"That's why Maya was always treated differently."

"Because Dad never believed she belonged to him."

The whispers spread instantly.

Some guests looked horrified.

Others looked fascinated.

A few quietly reached for their phones.

Maya didn't say a word.

She simply looked at Richard.

His face was filled with pain.

Then she looked at Karen.

Tears streamed freely down her mother's cheeks.

"No..."

Karen whispered.

"No..."

Trevor stepped beside Olivia.

"Enough."

She pulled away.

"I'm telling the truth."

"No."

He answered quietly.

"You're trying to explain something you don't understand."

Daniel Bennett struck his cane sharply against the marble floor.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

"Everyone."

His voice carried surprising authority.

"Sit down."

People obeyed almost instinctively.

Daniel turned toward Olivia.

"You've heard one sentence..."

"...and invented an entire story."

Olivia crossed her arms.

"I heard what I heard."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

"You heard children listening through doors."

Karen wiped her tears.

"Richard..."

She looked at her husband desperately.

"Tell them."

Richard closed his eyes.

He remained silent.

Maya finally spoke.

"Dad."

He slowly looked up.

"Is it true?"

The question hung painfully in the air.

Richard's lips trembled.

"No."

His voice was barely audible.

"It isn't."

Olivia laughed bitterly.

"Then explain it."

Richard looked around the ballroom.

He realized there was no escaping anymore.

Not today.

Not after everything that had already happened.

He took a slow breath.

"When Maya was born..."

He began.

"...the hospital made a mistake."

The room fell silent.

Karen nodded through tears.

"They mixed up the identification bracelets."

Maya frowned.

"What?"

Karen continued.

"For nearly six hours..."

"We believed another baby was ours."

The guests stared in stunned silence.

"The hospital eventually corrected the mistake."

Richard nodded.

"But..."

He swallowed.

"...those six hours terrified us."

Daniel quietly added,

"Karen kept asking the nurses whether the babies had truly been switched back."

Karen covered her face.

"I had just given birth."

"I was exhausted."

"I was scared."

"I kept saying..."

She looked at Maya.

"'How will we ever know for certain?'"

Her voice broke.

"I wasn't questioning whether you were my daughter."

"I was afraid of losing you."

Olivia's face slowly drained of color.

She whispered,

"...that's the conversation I heard."

Karen nodded.

"You were eleven."

"You heard one sentence."

"And imagined the rest."

The ballroom remained silent.

Olivia looked around.

Nobody supported her.

Nobody believed her.

For the first time all day...

She realized what she had done.

She had accused her own mother of betrayal.

And her father of rejecting his child.

Without knowing the truth.

Maya quietly walked toward Olivia.

The room tensed.

Some expected shouting.

Others expected a slap.

Instead...

Maya simply asked,

"Why?"

Olivia couldn't answer.

Maya repeated softly,

"Why did you say it?"

Olivia's shoulders began to shake.

"I..."

She looked down.

"I couldn't stand it anymore."

Tears rolled freely down her face.

"Everything..."

She whispered.

"...was supposed to be perfect."

"My wedding."

"My career."

"My life."

She looked at Maya.

"And suddenly..."

"...everyone looked at you."

"I hated it."

The confession echoed painfully through the ballroom.

Maya stared at her sister for a long moment.

Then she nodded slowly.

"Thank you."

Olivia blinked.

"What?"

"For finally telling the truth."

"The truth?"

Maya smiled sadly.

"Not about Mom."

She gently shook her head.

"About how you felt."

Olivia broke down completely.

She buried her face in her hands.

"I've been jealous of you for years."

The admission stunned everyone.

"Jealous?"

Karen whispered.

"You had everything."

Olivia laughed through tears.

"No."

She looked toward Maya.

"I had everyone's attention."

"But she..."

She pointed weakly toward her sister.

"...had everyone's respect."

Silence.

"I spent my whole life trying to impress people."

"And she..."

Her voice cracked.

"...never had to."

Trevor quietly wrapped an arm around Olivia's shoulders.

This time...

She didn't pull away.

At that moment, another member of the security team entered the ballroom.

He approached Adrian Sinclair.

"The man at the gate has left."

Adrian nodded.

"Did he leave his name?"

The guard handed him a folded envelope.

"He said to give this to Maya."

Maya accepted it carefully.

There was no return address.

Only five handwritten words.

For Maya. The truth matters.

She slowly unfolded the letter.

Inside was a faded copy of an old hospital record dated twenty-six years earlier.

At the bottom of the page, highlighted in yellow, were two typed lines.

Infant Bennett – Female

Identification Bracelet Replaced at 4:17 A.M. Due to Administrative Error

Attached to the record was a handwritten note.

Your parents told you the truth tonight.

But they still haven't told you everything.

There was no signature.

Only a single sentence written beneath it.

Ask your Uncle Daniel why your grandfather changed his will three days after you were born.

Daniel's expression changed the moment he saw those words.

May you like

For the second time that day...

The color drained from his face.
