Chapter 12 – The Bride Walks Out

Chapter 12 – The Bride Walks Out

The newspaper clipping remained on the table.

No one touched it.

No one dared.

The faded ink, the old photograph, and the name printed beneath the headline seemed to carry the weight of a secret that had been buried for far too long.

MICHAEL CARLISLE

Accountant connected to Bennett family business records.

Died in a suspected vehicle accident after agreeing to testify in estate fraud investigation.

Maya read the words again.

Then once more.

Her eyes slowly lifted.

"Dad..."

Richard looked like a man standing before a judge.

"I know how this looks."

"No."

Maya's voice was quiet.

"How does it look?"

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Olivia stared at their father.

"You knew about this?"

Richard didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Disbelief.

"You knew someone connected to the fraud died..."

"And you said nothing?"

Richard looked away.

"I was scared."

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Richard Bennett was never scared.

Not in business meetings.

Not during arguments.

Not when making decisions that affected everyone around him.

But tonight...

He looked terrified.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Richard."

His voice was cold.

"What happened that night?"

Richard closed his eyes.

For twenty-six years, he had avoided this moment.

But there was nowhere left to hide.

"Michael Carlisle was Edward's younger brother."

Everyone listened.

"He worked as an accountant for my company."

Richard looked at Maya.

"He found irregularities."

"What kind?"

Maya asked.

"Money transfers."

"Fake invoices."

"Payments that didn't make sense."

Ethan Brooks immediately became serious.

"How much money?"

Richard hesitated.

"At least six million dollars."

The room erupted in whispers.

"Edward was stealing from the estate?"

Daniel nodded.

"And from the company."

Richard continued.

"Michael discovered it."

"He planned to report everything."

Karen whispered,

"Then why didn't he?"

Richard's face tightened.

"Because he died first."

A painful silence followed.

Maya looked at the newspaper.

"You said you were the last person who saw him."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Richard sat down slowly.

"Because he came to my office that evening."

"What did he want?"

"He wanted protection."

Everyone froze.

"He knew Edward was dangerous."

"He believed someone inside the company was helping him."

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"Someone inside?"

Richard nodded.

"He didn't know who."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Did Michael mention my father's will?"

Richard looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer hit Daniel hard.

"What did he say?"

Richard swallowed.

"He said Edward didn't just steal money."

"He said Edward changed something bigger."

Maya felt a chill.

"The will."

Richard nodded.

The entire mystery suddenly connected.

The missing document.

The forged signature.

The vanished attorney.

The stolen inheritance.

The dead accountant.

Everything led back to one person.

Edward Carlisle.

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"

Karen's voice was filled with pain.

Richard looked at her.

"Because the police asked me not to."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Richard nodded.

"They believed the death was suspicious."

"They told me not to discuss the investigation."

"Not with the media."

"Not with the family."

"Not with anyone."

Daniel looked unconvinced.

"That was twenty-six years ago."

Richard looked down.

"I know."

"After the investigation went cold..."

Richard paused.

"I should have spoken."

"But I didn't."

"Why?"

Maya asked.

Richard answered honestly.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Richard looked at the newspaper.

"That Edward was still watching."

Suddenly...

A chair scraped against the floor.

Everyone turned.

Olivia stood.

She looked pale.

"I can't do this."

Trevor immediately moved toward her.

"Olivia."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I can't stand here pretending everything is normal."

Her wedding dress brushed against the marble floor as she walked toward the exit.

"Maya..."

She stopped.

For a moment, everyone thought she would say something cruel.

Instead, she whispered,

"I thought my biggest problem was being jealous of you."

She looked down.

"I was wrong."

A tear fell.

"My biggest problem was that I spent years becoming someone I don't even recognize."

Trevor reached for her hand.

"Where are you going?"

She looked at him.

"I don't know."

That answer scared him more than anger would have.

"But I know one thing."

She glanced back at Maya.

"I don't deserve to stand beside you and pretend I'm the victim."

Then Olivia Bennett...

The bride.

The daughter who had always needed to be admired.

The woman who had planned every detail of the perfect day...

Walked away.

The ballroom doors opened.

Cold October air rushed inside.

Guests watched silently as the bride stepped out into the darkness.

No dramatic announcement.

No screaming.

No scene.

Just a woman finally facing the truth about herself.

Trevor looked at Maya.

"I should go after her."

Maya nodded.

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"After everything she did..."

Maya smiled faintly.

"She still needs someone who sees the person underneath."

Trevor nodded.

Then followed his wife outside.

The room slowly emptied.

Guests left quietly.

The wedding that had begun with perfection ended with honesty.

Hours later...

The Bennett family remained in the empty ballroom.

Only the four of them.

Richard.

Karen.

Maya.

And Daniel.

Daniel picked up the old newspaper clipping.

"There is still one problem."

Maya looked at him.

"What?"

"The anonymous messages."

Everyone became alert.

Daniel continued.

"Whoever sent these knows about the hidden will."

"They know about Edward."

"They know about Michael."

Richard frowned.

"Then who?"

Maya looked at her phone.

The unknown number was still active.

A new message arrived.

Everyone saw it.

You are looking in the wrong direction.

Another message appeared seconds later.

Edward Carlisle didn't destroy the original will.

A third message.

Someone in your family protected him.

Karen's face went pale.

"No..."

Richard whispered.

"Impossible."

Daniel looked around the empty ballroom.

His expression hardened.

"Not impossible."

Maya stared at the screen.

"Then who?"

The phone vibrated again.

One final message appeared.

This time...

There was a name attached.

FROM: OLIVIA BENNETT

Everyone froze.

Maya's blood ran cold.

"Olivia?"

Richard grabbed the phone.

"That's not possible."

But before anyone could respond...

Another message appeared.

Meet me alone. I know what happened to the original will.

And I know who really betrayed Grandpa.

Outside the ballroom doors...

The sound of a car engine started.

May you like

Olivia was leaving.

And she was carrying a secret that could destroy the entire Bennett family.
