Chapter 13 – The Truth Goes Public

Chapter 13 – The Truth Goes Public

The rain began just after midnight.

By the time Maya stepped outside the botanical gardens, the perfect autumn wedding had been reduced to scattered flower petals, abandoned decorations, and a ballroom full of secrets no one could pretend away anymore.

The city lights of Chicago reflected against the wet pavement.

Everything looked different.

Or maybe...

Maya was finally seeing everything clearly.

Her phone remained in her hand.

The last message from Olivia was still displayed.

Meet me alone. I know what happened to the original will.

Maya stared at the screen.

For years, Olivia had been the person most likely to hurt her.

Now...

She might also be the person holding the missing piece of the truth.

"You shouldn't go alone."

Maya turned.

Ethan Brooks stood behind her beneath the entrance canopy.

She wasn't surprised.

Somehow, Ethan always seemed to appear when things became impossible.

"I'll be careful."

He shook his head.

"That's not what I mean."

"What then?"

"People who hide secrets for twenty-six years don't suddenly reveal them without a reason."

Maya looked toward the dark parking lot.

"You think Olivia is setting a trap?"

"No."

Ethan paused.

"I think Olivia is terrified."

Adrian Sinclair joined them.

His phone was pressed against his ear.

"I just spoke with Nova Tech's legal department."

Maya looked at him.

"And?"

"The Edward Carlisle connection is real."

He lowered his voice.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"Someone accessed old Bennett family records three months ago."

Daniel, standing nearby, immediately looked concerned.

"Who?"

Adrian showed him the information.

Daniel's face changed.

"It can't be."

Maya stepped closer.

"What?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"The person who accessed the files..."

He hesitated.

"...was Olivia Bennett."

The revelation hit harder than expected.

Richard closed his eyes.

"Olivia?"

Karen shook her head.

"No."

Daniel looked at Maya.

"She may not have been helping Edward."

"But she was searching for something."

Maya remembered Olivia's expression earlier.

The anger.

The jealousy.

The desperation.

But beneath all of it...

Fear.

"What did she find?"

Daniel looked toward the road.

"That is what you need to ask her."

One Hour Later

Maya arrived at an old coffee shop near Lake Michigan.

The place was almost empty.

Only the sound of rain against the windows filled the room.

Olivia sat in the corner.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

But without the confidence.

Without the perfect smile.

She looked exhausted.

When Maya approached, Olivia stood.

"I wasn't sure you'd come."

Maya sat across from her.

"You said you knew something."

Olivia nodded.

"I do."

For several seconds, Olivia stared at her hands.

Then she spoke.

"I didn't ruin your life because I hated you."

Maya said nothing.

"I ruined your life because I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Olivia laughed quietly.

"Of becoming irrelevant."

She looked out the window.

"Do you know what it's like growing up as the favorite child?"

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"Favorite?"

Olivia smiled sadly.

"Everyone thinks it's a gift."

"It isn't."

"Because you spend your entire life terrified of losing it."

Maya listened.

"I was the daughter everyone showed off."

"The one they brought to events."

"The one they introduced to their friends."

"The one they posted pictures of."

She swallowed.

"But I knew something."

"What?"

"That if I stopped being impressive..."

"I wasn't sure anyone would still love me."

Maya softened slightly.

"Olivia..."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Let me finish."

"I found Grandpa's old documents three months ago."

Maya became still.

"How?"

"After Dad started acting strange."

"When?"

"After you accepted the Nova Tech position."

Olivia looked down.

"I was looking through Dad's office."

"I found a hidden compartment."

Inside..."

She paused.

"...was a letter from Edward Carlisle."

Maya's expression changed.

"What did it say?"

Olivia pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I brought a copy."

She slid it across the table.

Maya opened it.

The letter was dated twenty-five years earlier.

The first line made her heart stop.

Richard, I have completed the changes you requested.

Maya looked up.

"Your father..."

Olivia shook her head quickly.

"No."

Maya continued.

The document will appear to show that Maya's inheritance was reduced because of legal complications.

No one will question the adjustment.

However, I cannot continue this arrangement indefinitely.

Your brother Daniel is becoming suspicious.

Maya looked at Olivia.

"This is proof."

Olivia nodded.

"But there is more."

She turned the page.

The second half was a handwritten note.

Not from Edward.

From someone else.

Maya recognized the handwriting immediately.

Richard.

Her father's handwriting.

Her hands became cold.

Edward,

I never asked you to steal from Maya.

I asked you to protect Olivia's future because she needs more support.

The money can be restored later.

No one has to know.

Maya stopped reading.

The words blurred.

"He didn't destroy the will."

Olivia whispered.

"No."

"He changed it."

Maya looked up.

"He chose me."

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

For years, Maya had wondered why.

Why Olivia always received more.

Why her achievements were overlooked.

Why her father seemed determined to make her grateful for things she had earned herself.

Now she finally knew.

It wasn't only favoritism.

It was a decision.

A conscious choice.

"What happened to the original will?"

Maya asked.

Olivia shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Then why say you know the truth?"

"Because I found something else."

She removed a small flash drive from her purse.

"I copied everything from Dad's office."

Maya stared at it.

"Why didn't you give this to everyone?"

Olivia looked away.

"Because I was ashamed."

"You knew?"

"I knew Dad had changed something."

"I knew it involved you."

"But I didn't understand how bad it was until today."

Her voice broke.

"And then I saw you standing there..."

"Getting everything you deserved."

"While I was still pretending to be perfect."

Maya looked at the flash drive.

"Why give this to me now?"

Olivia answered honestly.

"Because I finally realized something."

"What?"

"I spent my whole life trying to beat you."

She smiled sadly.

"But you were never competing with me."

Before Maya could respond...

Every phone in the coffee shop suddenly began vibrating.

A news alert.

Then another.

Then another.

Maya looked down.

Her screen filled with notifications.

BREAKING NEWS

Bennett Family Estate Fraud Investigation Reopened

Documents Reveal Possible Inheritance Manipulation

Billionaire Investor Ethan Brooks Linked to Investigation

Maya froze.

"What?"

Olivia looked at her own phone.

Her face went pale.

"No..."

"What?"

"I didn't send anything."

Another alert appeared.

This time with a video.

The headline:

PRIVATE BENNETT FAMILY RECORDINGS LEAKED ONLINE

Maya opened it.

The video showed footage from the wedding.

The hidden will.

The accusations.

The family confrontation.

Everything.

Someone had recorded the entire night.

And released it publicly.

Adrian immediately called.

Maya answered.

His voice was urgent.

"Maya."

"What happened?"

"Someone leaked the footage."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then:

"We don't know."

Ethan's voice came through another line.

"But we know one thing."

"What?"

"The person who uploaded it didn't want money."

Maya frowned.

"Then what did they want?"

Silence.

Then Ethan answered.

"They wanted the world to know the Bennett family secret."

Maya looked through the coffee shop window.

Rain fell harder.

The entire city was now watching her family's collapse.

But then...

A new notification appeared.

A video link.

No title.

No sender.

Only a message.

The public knows what happened.

Now they need to know why.

Maya opened it.

The screen went black.

Then a man's voice appeared.

An older voice.

A voice she had heard only once before.

Her grandfather's.

"If you are watching this..."

Maya stopped breathing.

"Then someone failed to protect my granddaughter."

The video continued.

"And the person responsible is not Edward Carlisle."

Maya's eyes widened.

The final words appeared on screen.

THE REAL BETRAYER IS SOMEONE YOU TRUST.

The video ended.

And beneath it...

May you like

A name appeared.

RICHARD BENNETT.
