Chapter 10 – The Hidden Will

Chapter 10 – The Hidden Will
The photograph on Maya's phone remained frozen on the screen.
An old legal document.
A faded signature.
A handwritten amendment that appeared to have been altered.
At the bottom of the anonymous message were six chilling words.
Don't trust everyone in the Bennett family.
Maya slowly locked her phone.
She looked around the ballroom.
Every face reflected a different emotion.
Regret.
Confusion.
Fear.
Curiosity.
But only one face showed genuine panic.
Daniel Bennett.
"You've seen this before."
Maya's voice was calm.
Daniel looked at her.
For several long seconds, he didn't answer.
Finally, he nodded.
"Yes."
Richard immediately stood.
"Daniel..."
"You promised."
"I promised to protect Maya."
Daniel replied quietly.
"I never promised to protect your secrets."
The ballroom had become eerily quiet.
The wedding guests no longer pretended not to listen.
Even the hotel staff stood motionless near the walls.
Trevor looked toward the master of ceremonies.
"I think the reception is officially over."
A few guests laughed nervously.
No one left.
Daniel slowly opened his worn leather briefcase once more.
"I hoped this day would never come."
He removed a thick brown envelope tied with a faded blue ribbon.
The paper looked decades old.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were the words:
Estate of Charles Bennett
Maya's grandfather.
Karen whispered,
"Is that..."
Daniel nodded.
"The original estate file."
Richard's face turned pale.
"I thought it was destroyed."
"I let you believe that."
Daniel carefully untied the ribbon.
Inside were several legal documents, handwritten letters, bank records, and one sealed envelope bearing the signature of Charles Bennett.
"This..."
Daniel said softly,
"...is the original will."
Maya looked at the document.
Then at the copy she had received earlier.
"They're different."
Daniel nodded.
"They are."
He placed both documents side by side.
At first glance, they appeared identical.
But then Maya noticed something.
The final page.
One paragraph had disappeared from the version Richard knew.
Daniel pointed to it.
"Read this."
Maya began quietly.
If either of my sons attempts to interfere with the inheritance intended for my grandchildren, that son shall immediately forfeit his share of my estate.
The room fell silent.
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
"There was another paragraph."
Karen whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"One that vanished."
Richard looked up.
"I didn't remove it."
Daniel remained silent.
"I swear."
Daniel finally spoke.
"I believe you."
Everyone looked surprised.
"You do?"
Daniel nodded.
"Because I know who did."
The room froze.
Maya leaned forward.
"Who?"
Daniel took a slow breath.
"The family's attorney."
"What?"
Karen gasped.
Daniel removed another document.
"Edward Carlisle."
Richard frowned.
"Our lawyer?"
"He was."
Daniel corrected.
"He managed Father's estate."
"For thirty years."
Daniel laid several financial statements on the table.
"Six months after Father died..."
He pointed to one transfer.
"...nearly four million dollars disappeared from the estate."
Richard stared.
"I never saw these."
"You weren't supposed to."
Trevor carefully examined the paperwork.
"These signatures..."
He frowned.
"They don't match."
Daniel nodded.
"They're excellent forgeries."
Maya looked at the altered will.
"So someone changed Grandfather's estate."
"Yes."
Daniel answered.
"And they expected no one to notice."
Karen frowned.
"But why?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Because everyone trusted the lawyer."
Ethan Brooks crossed his arms.
"Did you report him?"
"I tried."
Daniel answered.
"But before the investigation began..."
"He disappeared."
"When?"
Maya asked.
"Twenty-five years ago."
Olivia looked confused.
"If he vanished..."
"How do we know he forged the will?"
Daniel quietly removed one final item from the envelope.
An old cassette tape.
Everyone stared.
"A recording?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your grandfather anticipated problems."
"He secretly recorded one of his meetings."
Richard looked stunned.
"Father recorded Edward?"
"No."
Daniel answered.
"He recorded all of us."
A nearby hotel employee quickly located an old cassette player from the event manager's office.
The machine crackled as Daniel carefully inserted the tape.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A familiar elderly voice.
Charles Bennett.
"If anyone is listening to this..."
The recording said.
"...then I was right."
The room became perfectly silent.
"I have reason to believe my attorney, Edward Carlisle, has been approached with an offer to alter my estate."
Karen covered her mouth.
Charles continued.
"My sons know nothing about this."
"I pray they never will."
Another voice interrupted the recording.
Edward Carlisle.
"You worry too much, Charles."
Charles answered calmly.
"No."
"I've built businesses."
"I know greed when I see it."
The tape suddenly crackled again.
Then came one sentence that changed everything.
"If anything happens to my original will..."
Charles said firmly.
"...Daniel knows where I hid the second copy."
Every eye turned toward Daniel.
"You knew."
Richard whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"I did."
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"
Daniel looked toward Maya.
"Because your grandfather gave me one instruction."
He reached into his coat pocket and unfolded a yellowed note.
It contained only one handwritten sentence.
Do not reveal the hidden will until Maya Bennett has proven she can stand without the family's wealth.
Silence.
"He believed..."
Daniel smiled through tears.
"...that money should never decide who she became."
Maya quietly folded the note.
"I understand."
Daniel nodded.
"I hoped you would."
Richard slowly stood.
"So..."
His voice trembled.
"Everything Father planned..."
Daniel smiled.
"Worked exactly as intended."
Karen looked at Maya.
"Does this mean..."
Maya interrupted gently.
"It means Grandpa believed in me before I was old enough to know what belief felt like."
Karen's tears returned.
Trevor quietly laughed.
"I think your grandfather was a remarkable man."
"So do I."
Maya smiled.
"I wish I'd known him longer."
Just then, Adrian Sinclair's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
"What is it?"
Ethan asked.
Adrian looked toward Maya.
"I think..."
He paused.
"...our mystery just became much bigger."
He turned the phone so everyone could see.
It was an email from Nova Tech's legal department.
Subject: Urgent Background Investigation
The message contained only one sentence.
Edward Carlisle has been located.
Another line followed beneath it.
He currently serves as legal counsel to Sterling Capital Holdings... the investment company attempting a hostile takeover of Nova Tech.
Adrian slowly looked at Maya.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Richard.
"The man who disappeared twenty-five years ago..."
He spoke quietly.
May you like
"...has been watching all of us this entire time."
