CHAPTER 10 — THE FAMILY WAR

CHAPTER 10 — THE FAMILY WAR

For several seconds, Elena could hear nothing.

Not the rain striking the observatory windows.

Not the old machinery humming somewhere beneath the floor.

Not even Julian breathing.

Only one sentence remained in her mind.

Vanessa is Isabelle.

Her sister.

The woman she had spent months despising.

The woman who had stood beside Julian while Elena's marriage collapsed.

The woman who had worn Elena's emerald.

The woman Elena had believed was her enemy.

Her sister.

Elena looked at Catherine.

“Say it again.”

Catherine's expression was unreadable.

“Vanessa is your older sister.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“No, she isn't.”

Her father stepped forward.

“She's your sister.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to listen.”

“I've listened my entire life!”

Elena's voice cracked.

“I listened when you told me Mother died in an accident.”

“I listened when Grandma told me Catherine disappeared.”

“I listened when everyone told me there was no other heir.”

“And now you want me to believe the woman who destroyed my marriage is my sister?”

Her father lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Elena laughed.

It was a broken sound.

“Then explain everything.”

Nobody answered.

“Explain it!”

Her voice echoed through the observatory.

Finally, her father spoke.

“Your mother gave birth to two daughters.”

Elena stared at him.

“You and Isabelle.”

“Yes.”

“Why was Isabelle hidden?”

“Because your grandmother believed she was a threat.”

“To what?”

“To the inheritance.”

Elena looked at Catherine.

“And Catherine?”

“She took Isabelle.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed she could use her.”

Elena's stomach tightened.

“Use her for what?”

“To reclaim the inheritance.”

Catherine finally stepped forward.

“That isn't the whole truth.”

Elena looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

Catherine's eyes filled with something between anger and grief.

“I loved Isabelle.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“I saved her.”

“You changed her identity.”

“I kept her alive.”

“You turned her against me.”

Catherine's face hardened.

“I never told her to hate you.”

“You made her believe she had no family.”

“I made her believe she had a chance to survive.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“And you?”

Julian lowered his head.

“I didn't know who she was when I met her.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I didn't.”

Elena stepped closer.

“You knew she was connected to the family.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And you stayed with her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Julian looked at her.

“Because Marcus told me Vanessa could destroy you.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“So you used her.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I fell in love with her.”

The words landed like another slap.

Elena stared at him.

“You fell in love with my sister.”

Julian couldn't answer.

Elena turned away.

Her hands were shaking.

Then a voice came from the shadows.

“Enough.”

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stepped into the room.

Elena's breath caught.

She looked different.

No designer gown.

No jewelry.

No makeup carefully designed to project wealth.

Just a simple black coat.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were red.

She looked frightened.

But she looked exactly like the baby in the photograph.

Elena stared.

“Isabelle?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.”

Elena couldn't move.

Vanessa took one step forward.

“I didn't know.”

“Know what?”

“That you were my sister.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“When did you find out?”

“Three months ago.”

“From Julian?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at Catherine.

“From her.”

Catherine closed her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“She showed me documents.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Everyone.”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I spent my entire life believing I was nobody.”

“I had no birth certificate.”

“No family name.”

“No history.”

“Then suddenly Catherine told me I was an heiress.”

Elena whispered:

“You believed her.”

“I wanted to.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I wanted to believe I belonged somewhere.”

Elena couldn't answer.

Vanessa continued.

“So I entered your life.”

“Under false pretenses.”

“Yes.”

“You seduced my husband.”

“Yes.”

“You helped steal from me.”

“Yes.”

“You wore my grandmother's emerald.”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I didn't know it was yours.”

“It was my mother's.”

“I know.”

“Now.”

“Yes.”

Elena turned away.

The pain was too complicated to name.

She hated Vanessa.

She pitied her.

She wanted to forgive her.

She wanted to scream.

All at once.

Her father walked toward them.

“This is why I did everything.”

Elena turned.

“You don't get to say that.”

“I was trying to protect both of you.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to Isabelle.”

“Yes.”

“You let us hurt each other.”

His face collapsed.

“I thought distance would keep you alive.”

Elena shook her head.

“You created the war.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

He pointed toward Catherine.

“She did.”

Catherine laughed.

“You're still blaming me?”

“You stole my daughter.”

“You abandoned her.”

“I was trying to save her.”

“You were trying to save yourself.”

The two stared at each other.

Then Catherine said the words Elena had been waiting for.

“Tell her what you did after the accident.”

Her father went silent.

Elena's heart sank.

“What accident?”

Catherine looked at her.

“Your mother didn't die immediately.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

“She survived the crash.”

Her father's face went pale.

“She was alive for almost six hours.”

Elena stared.

“Then why did she die?”

Catherine's eyes filled with tears.

“Because someone turned off her oxygen.”

Silence.

Elena looked at her father.

“Was it you?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Catherine whispered:

“Your grandmother.”

The room became unbearable.

Elena stepped backward.

“Why?”

“Because your mother was going to expose everything.”

“What everything?”

“The hidden trust.”

“The forged records.”

“The second inheritance.”

“And the person who had been stealing from the family.”

“Marcus.”

Catherine shook her head.

“No.”

Elena frowned.

“Then who?”

Catherine looked at Vanessa.

“Her father.”

Elena stared.

Vanessa's face went white.

“My father?”

Catherine nodded.

“Your biological father was not the man listed on your mother's records.”

Elena's mind raced.

“Who was he?”

Catherine whispered:

“Damien Cross.”

Silence.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

“No.”

Catherine continued.

“Your mother had a relationship with Damien before she married your father.”

Elena looked at Vanessa.

“So Damien is Isabelle's father.”

“Yes.”

“And he knew?”

“He has known for years.”

Elena's heart pounded.

That explained everything.

Damien wasn't simply fighting for money.

He wasn't simply manipulating Vanessa.

He had been searching for his daughter.

But if that was true—

why had he allowed her to destroy Elena's marriage?

Why had he let Julian betray her?

Why had he stayed hidden?

Elena looked at Vanessa.

“Did Damien know you were alive?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Since I was born.”

Elena's voice hardened.

“And he never came for you?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“He couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandmother threatened to kill him.”

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Julian's.

He looked at the screen.

Marcus.

Julian answered.

“What?”

Marcus's voice came through.

“You have five minutes.”

“For what?”

“To bring Elena.”

“Where?”

“The Callahan vault.”

Julian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the family war is over.”

Elena stepped closer.

“What does he want?”

Julian put the call on speaker.

Marcus laughed.

“She can hear me.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

His voice became colder.

“Bring Elena to the vault.”

“No.”

“Then Catherine dies.”

Catherine's expression changed.

“And if I refuse?”

“Then Vanessa dies.”

Vanessa froze.

Marcus continued.

“And if Elena calls the police, Lily dies.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“Lily?”

Marcus laughed.

“You thought the child was safe?”

Catherine whispered:

“No…”

“She was never the target.”

“Then what is she?”

Marcus answered:

“The key.”

The line went dead.

Elena looked at everyone.

“We're going.”

Her father shook his head.

“No.”

“We have no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

“Not when children are involved.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The vault isn't a bank.”

Elena looked at him.

“Then what is it?”

“A family archive.”

“What does Marcus want?”

“The original ownership documents.”

Elena frowned.

“I thought we already had them.”

“We have copies.”

“And the originals?”

“Inside the vault.”

“Why are they important?”

Adrian's expression became grim.

“Because they prove who owns the Callahan empire.”

Elena understood.

If Marcus controlled those documents—

he could claim everything.

Not legally.

But enough to create chaos.

And chaos was exactly what he needed.

The Callahan estate was surrounded by security by the time they arrived.

No one spoke.

Elena sat beside Vanessa in the car.

Neither knew what to say.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“I am sorry.”

Elena looked out the window.

“You should be.”

“I know.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You took the man I loved.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I didn't know he was your husband when I first met him.”

“But you knew later.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

Elena turned.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because I had spent my entire life believing I had nothing.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Then I found out I had a family.”

“I was terrified you'd take it away.”

Elena stared at her.

“You could have told me.”

“I know.”

“You could have come to me.”

“I know.”

“Instead, you chose to destroy me.”

Vanessa whispered:

“I was selfish.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

The car stopped.

They stepped out.

The vault was beneath the old east wing.

Elena had never seen the entrance.

Her father entered a code.

The wall opened.

Inside were shelves of documents.

Gold.

Jewelry.

Old ledgers.

Family photographs.

And in the center—

a massive steel safe.

Marcus stood beside it.

He wasn't alone.

Three armed men surrounded him.

Lily was sitting in a chair.

Crying.

Elena's heart broke.

“Lily!”

The child looked up.

“Aunt Elena!”

She ran toward her.

One of the men grabbed her.

Elena stopped.

“Don't touch her.”

Marcus smiled.

“Now you understand.”

“You wanted the vault.”

“I want what's inside it.”

“The documents.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because once the world sees them, the Callahan empire collapses.”

Elena stared.

“Why destroy your own family?”

Marcus laughed.

“They were never my family.”

“Then what are you?”

His smile disappeared.

“The man your grandmother used to build her empire.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“I wasn't her nephew.”

“I wasn't her trusted adviser.”

“I was her accomplice.”

“She promised me half.”

“She lied.”

“So I spent twenty-two years taking what she refused to give me.”

Elena looked at the documents.

“You've been stealing from us.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Seventy-two million?”

“More.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“You destroyed thousands of lives.”

Marcus shrugged.

“Empires are built on destruction.”

Then the vault doors slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The lights went red.

An alarm began screaming.

Marcus looked confused.

“What did you do?”

Elena smiled faintly.

“I didn't do anything.”

A voice came over the intercom.

“Neither did she.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian stepped toward the control panel.

“The vault has been sealed.”

Marcus shouted:

“Who locked it?”

A second voice answered.

“Me.”

Elena recognized it.

Damien.

The lights flickered.

A hidden screen activated.

Damien's face appeared.

Marcus stared.

“You.”

Damien smiled.

“You've been stealing from the wrong family.”

Marcus raised his gun.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

“What do you want?”

“My daughter.”

Vanessa froze.

Damien continued:

“And I want Elena's inheritance returned.”

Marcus laughed.

“You think you can take it?”

“No.”

Damien's expression hardened.

“I think Elena can.”

Elena looked at the screen.

“Why me?”

“Because you're the only one Marcus can't control.”

Marcus shouted:

“She doesn't know how to run an empire!”

Elena turned toward him.

“No.”

She looked at the vault.

“I know exactly how.”

The doors opened.

Security stormed inside.

Marcus tried to escape.

He was tackled before he reached the corridor.

His men surrendered.

Lily was released.

Catherine was arrested.

Julian stood motionless.

Vanessa watched her father on the screen.

“Why did you abandon me?”

Damien's expression softened.

“I didn't.”

“You let me believe I was alone.”

“I was protecting you.”

“Everyone says that.”

Damien looked toward Elena.

“She'll understand someday.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Damien looked surprised.

“I won't.”

She walked toward the camera.

“You don't get to decide what happens to us anymore.”

Damien smiled.

“Good.”

“What?”

“You're finally thinking like a Callahan.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“I don't want to be a Callahan.”

“Then become something better.”

The screen went black.

By sunrise, Marcus was in custody.

Catherine was arrested for fraud, kidnapping, and financial conspiracy.

Julian was cooperating with investigators.

Vanessa remained under protective custody.

Lily slept in Elena's room.

The family war had begun with money.

But it had ended with something far more valuable.

Truth.

Or so Elena thought.

At 6:15 a.m., Richard entered the room.

“We found something.”

Elena looked up.

“What?”

“A second vault.”

“Where?”

“Under the old chapel.”

Elena frowned.

“What is inside?”

Richard hesitated.

“A sealed birth record.”

“For whom?”

He placed the document on the table.

Elena opened it.

Her hands began to shake.

The name on the record was not Isabelle.

Not Vanessa.

Not Lily.

It was another name.

ELENA MARIE CALLAHAN.

Below it was a handwritten note.

THIS IS NOT HER REAL NAME.

Elena stared at the words.

Then she noticed the signature.

Her mother's.

And beneath it:

If my daughter ever discovers this, she must know one thing.

She was never born a Callahan.

Elena stopped breathing.

The family war was not over.

It had only exposed the first battlefield.

Because if Elena wasn't truly a Callahan—

May you like

then the empire she had spent her entire life believing belonged to her...

might belong to someone else entirely.
