CHAPTER 5 — THE MONEY HE STOLE

CHAPTER 5 — THE MONEY HE STOLE
At 6:12 the next morning, Elena received a message from Richard Hale.
We found the transfers. You need to see this immediately.
She was already awake.
She had barely slept.
The photograph of Adrian Vale remained on the desk beside her bed, along with the address of Blackwater Marina.
But Richard's message changed everything.
She drove to Callahan headquarters before sunrise.
When she entered the executive conference room, Richard was already waiting.
So was the chief financial officer.
And three forensic accountants.
A wall-sized screen displayed a series of transactions.
Elena stopped.
“How much?”
The CFO looked at her.
“Fourteen million, eight hundred and thirty thousand dollars.”
Her expression didn't change.
“Transferred where?”
“That's the problem.”
He clicked the screen.
The money had moved through seven different companies.
Each company existed legally.
Each had different directors.
Different addresses.
Different bank accounts.
But every transaction had one thing in common.
Julian's authorization.
Elena stared at the screen.
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“Three years?”
“Yes.”
“How did we miss this?”
The CFO lowered his eyes.
“Because the transfers were structured below internal review thresholds.”
Richard added quietly:
“Someone knew exactly how to hide them.”
Elena looked at the transactions.
“This wasn't random.”
“No.”
“Whoever did this understood our accounting system.”
The CFO nodded.
“They knew the approval hierarchy.”
“Who had that access?”
He hesitated.
“Julian.”
Elena looked toward him.
“Anyone else?”
The room went silent.
Finally, the CFO said:
“Marcus Callahan.”
Elena didn't react.
Not immediately.
She looked at the screen again.
Fourteen million dollars.
Money that belonged to her family's trust.
Money that had been moved quietly while Julian stood in boardrooms boasting about growth.
Money that had funded someone else's life.
She asked:
“Where did the money ultimately go?”
The forensic accountant changed the screen.
A final company appeared.
LUXE HORIZON HOLDINGS.
Elena frowned.
“Who owns it?”
“Officially?”
“Yes.”
“An investment company registered in Luxembourg.”
“And unofficially?”
The accountant looked at Richard.
Richard nodded.
“We traced the beneficial ownership.”
The next screen appeared.
Elena stopped breathing.
VANESSA LAURENT.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“She owns the company?”
“Through three nominee directors.”
“Does Julian know?”
“We don't know.”
Elena looked at the transaction history.
“Of course he knows.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“Why else would he authorize fourteen million dollars?”
Richard shook his head.
“There's something else.”
He clicked.
The money had not simply been transferred to Vanessa.
Some of it had been routed back.
Elena leaned forward.
“What's that?”
“Payments made from Luxe Horizon to another company.”
“What company?”
The name appeared.
AURELIA CONSULTING GROUP.
Elena recognized it.
Her face hardened.
“No.”
Richard watched her.
“You know it?”
“Yes.”
“From where?”
“My family archives.”
She looked at the screen.
“Aurelia was one of my grandmother's old holding companies.”
The CFO frowned.
“It's inactive.”
“It was supposed to be.”
Richard looked at the accountants.
“Then why is money moving through it?”
No one answered.
Elena suddenly understood.
This wasn't just theft.
It was a chain.
Someone had created a financial loop using Julian, Vanessa, Marcus, and an old Callahan entity.
But why?
At 8:40 a.m., Julian arrived at the headquarters.
He didn't ask permission.
He walked straight through security.
The guards stopped him.
“I have a meeting.”
“With whom?”
“Elena.”
“Do you have authorization?”
Julian's face darkened.
“I don't need authorization.”
The guard looked at the tablet.
“You do now.”
Julian clenched his jaw.
“Call her.”
The guard did.
A few seconds later, he handed Julian the phone.
Elena's voice came through.
“What do you want?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“About?”
“The money.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“What money?”
He looked around.
“The fourteen million.”
Silence.
“How do you know?”
“Because my lawyer showed me the documents.”
Elena stood.
“Come upstairs.”
Julian entered the conference room ten minutes later.
He looked at the screen.
Then at Elena.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“I can explain.”
“I hope you can.”
He sat down.
“Those weren't personal transfers.”
“I know.”
“They were investments.”
“Into Vanessa's company?”
He froze.
“I didn't know she owned it.”
Elena stared at him.
“You gave your mistress fourteen million dollars and didn't know where it went?”
“I thought it was a legitimate investment.”
“You authorized the transfers.”
“My financial team handled the paperwork.”
“Your signature is on every authorization.”
“I trusted them.”
Elena laughed once.
“You trusted everyone except your wife.”
Julian looked away.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
“From what?”
“From you.”
Elena stared.
“Why?”
“Because I knew you could take everything.”
“You were right.”
He looked at her.
“But I never wanted your money.”
That made Elena pause.
Julian continued.
“I wanted something of my own.”
“You had everything.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I had nothing.”
“You had a career.”
“You had the empire.”
“I had a title.”
He looked at her.
“Every time I walked into a room, they called me Mr. Callahan's son-in-law.”
“I never did.”
“You didn't have to.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knew.”
Elena said nothing.
For the first time, she saw the wound beneath his arrogance.
But she didn't forgive him.
Understanding was not forgiveness.
“Why Vanessa?” Elena asked.
Julian stared at the table.
“I don't know.”
“That's a lie.”
He sighed.
“She made me feel important.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“And I didn't?”
“You made me feel small.”
“You made yourself small.”
“I know.”
He looked up.
“But Vanessa never reminded me that everything came from your family.”
Elena's voice was quiet.
“Because she wanted what came from my family.”
Julian said nothing.
Elena slid a document toward him.
“Read this.”
He did.
It was the ownership structure of Luxe Horizon Holdings.
His face changed.
“She's the beneficiary.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't know.”
“You're still saying that?”
“I swear.”
Elena watched him.
“You're lying about something.”
Julian's eyes lifted.
“What?”
“You knew enough to move the money.”
“I knew the company was connected to her.”
“That isn't the same as knowing she owned it.”
“No.”
“Then who told you to transfer it?”
He went silent.
Elena waited.
Finally—
“Marcus.”
The room froze.
“Your uncle?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“What did he say?”
“That the trust was going to remove me.”
Elena stared.
“He told you that?”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
Julian swallowed.
“He said if I didn't secure money outside the trust, I'd be left with nothing.”
“And Vanessa?”
“He said she could help.”
Elena felt a chill.
“Help how?”
“I don't know.”
“Julian.”
“I swear.”
He stood.
“I didn't steal fourteen million dollars.”
Elena's voice was cold.
“You transferred fourteen million dollars from my family's trust to a company controlled by your mistress.”
He looked at her.
“I thought I was protecting myself.”
“That is theft.”
His face collapsed.
“I didn't know.”
“You didn't care.”
Julian left the room.
Elena remained seated.
Richard entered a few minutes later.
“You believe him?”
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
“But?”
Richard placed another file on the table.
“There is something else.”
Elena opened it.
Inside was a series of emails.
All between Marcus and Julian.
The first one was dated six months earlier.
MARCUS:
You need liquidity outside Elena's control.
JULIAN:
How much?
MARCUS:
At least ten million.
JULIAN:
Where do I put it?
MARCUS:
Vanessa's company.
Elena stared.
There was no ambiguity.
Marcus had instructed him.
She turned the page.
Another message.
MARCUS:
She'll never suspect the woman she hates.
Elena's eyes narrowed.
Another.
JULIAN:
And if Elena finds out?
The response:
MARCUS:
She won't. By then, she'll have no authority left.
Elena closed her eyes.
There it was.
The real plan.
Marcus hadn't merely wanted money.
He wanted Elena removed.
At noon, Vanessa sat alone in a small café.
Her phone kept buzzing.
Unknown numbers.
Messages.
News alerts.
She had no idea what was happening.
Then the screen displayed a headline.
CALLAHAN GROUP INVESTIGATES $14.8 MILLION TRANSFER NETWORK
Vanessa's blood ran cold.
She opened the article.
Her name wasn't mentioned.
Yet.
She stood immediately.
Her chair scraped against the floor.
She called Julian.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
“Vanessa, don't talk on the phone.”
“I'm scared.”
“Listen to me.”
“They know about the company.”
“I know.”
“My name is on it.”
“I know.”
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Stay where you are.”
“Are you coming?”
Silence.
“Julian?”
“I can't.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You said you'd protect me.”
“I can't protect you from this.”
She stared at the phone.
“You're abandoning me.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“Vanessa—”
She ended the call.
For the first time, she understood something.
Julian had never chosen her.
He had chosen what she represented.
Money.
Escape.
Power.
And now that those things were disappearing—
so was he.
That evening, Elena went to the old Callahan archives.
She wanted answers.
Not about Julian.
About Marcus.
The archivist unlocked a restricted cabinet.
“Elena, your grandmother specifically sealed this.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Open it.”
Inside were old financial ledgers.
Property records.
Trust agreements.
And one handwritten journal.
Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her grandmother.
She opened the first page.
There are two kinds of betrayal.
The betrayal committed for money.
And the betrayal committed because money was never the real objective.
Elena turned the page.
The next sentence made her stop.
Marcus will eventually choose the second.
Her heart began pounding.
She read further.
Her grandmother had written about Adrian Vale.
About a secret agreement between the Callahan and Vale families.
About a man who had disappeared.
About a future marriage.
And then—
about Julian.
Elena's fingers trembled.
If Julian ever enters Elena's life, watch him carefully.
She turned another page.
He may be innocent.
Another.
Or he may be the door through which Adrian returns.
Elena stopped.
The room suddenly felt cold.
Adrian.
Julian's father.
The man supposedly dead.
The man who had appeared in the photograph.
She kept reading.
Never tell Elena the truth until she has the strength to survive it.
Elena whispered:
“What truth?”
A voice answered from behind her.
“The truth about me.”
She froze.
The journal slipped from her hands.
Slowly, Elena turned around.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tall.
Gray at the temples.
The same scar above his eyebrow.
The same eyes she had seen in the photograph.
Adrian Vale.
Alive.
Elena couldn't breathe.
He looked at her calmly.
“You've grown into your grandmother's face.”
Elena stepped backward.
“You're dead.”
He smiled faintly.
“That's what they wanted everyone to believe.”
“Why?”
“Because I had to disappear.”
“Who made you?”
Adrian's expression darkened.
“Your grandmother.”
Elena stared.
“My grandmother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus was going to kill me.”
The room fell silent.
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian stepped inside.
“I didn't come back for Julian.”
“Then why are you here?”
He looked at the journal.
“Because your family has started moving money again.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian looked directly at her.
“Fourteen million dollars isn't the theft you should be worried about.”
“What is?”
He lowered his voice.
“The money Marcus has been moving for twenty-two years.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“Twenty-two years?”
Adrian nodded.
“He didn't start with Julian.”
“Then who?”
“You.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
Adrian took a folded document from his coat.
He placed it on the table.
It contained Elena's name.
Her birth date.
And a financial account she had never heard of.
At the bottom was a balance.
Elena's breath caught.
$312,400,000.
She looked up.
“What is this?”
Adrian's voice was quiet.
“Your grandmother's hidden inheritance.”
Elena stared at the number.
Three hundred twelve million dollars.
Money she had never known existed.
Money Marcus had been moving.
Money that had apparently been connected to her since childhood.
Adrian looked at her.
“And Julian wasn't stealing fourteen million from you.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“He was stealing from the people who were stealing from you.”
She looked at the document again.
Then at Adrian.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
Adrian's expression became almost sorrowful.
“Because if you knew the truth too early…”
He paused.
“…they would have killed you.”
The words hung in the silent archive.
Elena slowly closed the file.
For nine years, she had believed her greatest mistake was marrying Julian.
Now she understood.
Julian had never been the beginning of the story.
He had only been one piece of it.
And somewhere behind the fourteen million dollars, the missing emerald, Marcus's betrayal, and Adrian's disappearance was a much larger secret.
A secret worth hundreds of millions.
A secret her grandmother had hidden for her entire life.
May you like
And Marcus had been stealing from it—
one dollar at a time.
