CHAPTER 9 — THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 9 — THE RECORDING
The SUV disappeared beyond the gates.
Elena stood at the window long after the taillights vanished.
She couldn't move.
She couldn't breathe.
Her mind kept replaying the same image.
Julian in the passenger seat.
Catherine beside him.
And that smile.
Not fear.
Not desperation.
Triumph.
The woman Elena had embraced only hours earlier had just driven away with the husband who had betrayed her.
The woman who claimed to have spent twenty-two years hiding from the Callahans.
The woman who said she was protecting Lily.
The woman who had told Elena that her grandmother destroyed their family.
Now she was gone.
And she had taken Julian with her.
Richard entered the room.
“Elena.”
She didn't turn.
“Tell security to lock every gate.”
“They're already doing it.”
“Call the police.”
Richard hesitated.
“Elena—”
“Call them.”
“We have no proof Catherine kidnapped Julian.”
Elena finally turned.
“She left voluntarily?”
“We don't know.”
“She was sitting beside him.”
“I know.”
“And the cameras were disabled.”
“Yes.”
“Then someone planned this.”
Richard looked at the note in her hand.
“What's that?”
“My father's handwriting.”
She handed it to him.
Richard read it once.
Then again.
His expression changed.
“Catherine?”
Elena nodded.
“The same woman who supposedly spent twenty-two years hiding from everyone.”
Richard looked toward the empty doorway.
“We need to find her.”
“No.”
Elena's voice was calm now.
“We need to find the recording.”
Richard frowned.
“What recording?”
“The one Julian took.”
The library was still being searched when Elena returned.
Broken glass covered the floor.
The chair where Julian had been sitting was overturned.
The recorder was gone.
Richard crouched beside the table.
“He took the device.”
“That's what he wanted us to think.”
Richard looked up.
Elena pointed to the floor.
A small black fragment lay beneath the table.
He picked it up.
“A memory card.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“From the recorder?”
“Maybe.”
She held out her hand.
“Give it to me.”
Richard placed it in her palm.
They took it to the security room.
A technician inserted the card into an isolated computer.
Only one file appeared.
FINAL_TEST_01.MP4
Elena stared at the screen.
“Play it.”
The recording began.
Julian appeared.
He was sitting in the library.
But this wasn't the recording they had just made.
The timestamp was three days earlier.
Julian looked frightened.
Someone was sitting opposite him.
The person's face was hidden in shadow.
A voice spoke.
“You have one chance.”
Julian answered:
“I don't want to do this.”
“You already agreed.”
“I didn't agree to hurt her.”
“You agreed to destroy her.”
Elena's heart tightened.
She leaned closer.
The voice continued.
“If Elena discovers the inheritance, everything ends.”
Julian looked down.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Make her believe you betrayed her.”
“She'll hate me.”
“That is the point.”
Elena froze.
Richard looked at her.
The recording continued.
“You will take the money.”
“Fourteen million?”
“Yes.”
“Why that amount?”
“Enough to make her believe the theft is real.”
Julian swallowed.
“And Vanessa?”
“She will play her part.”
“What happens to her?”
“She gets paid.”
“And if Elena finds out?”
The voice became colder.
“Then she will be forced to run.”
Julian looked up.
“Where?”
“Back to her family.”
“Why?”
“Because that is where we need her.”
The recording stopped.
Elena stared at the screen.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Richard finally whispered:
“Julian was instructed.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“He agreed.”
“He was manipulated.”
“He still agreed.”
Richard said nothing.
Elena looked at the frozen image.
Julian had known.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to destroy her marriage.
Enough to humiliate her.
Enough to make her believe the man she loved had chosen another woman.
Then another realization struck her.
“Play it again.”
Richard restarted the recording.
Elena listened carefully.
The voice.
The phrasing.
The pauses.
Something bothered her.
When the recording ended, she said:
“That isn't Marcus.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
“Then who?”
“We need to identify the voice.”
The forensic team worked for two hours.
Voice comparison software produced several possibilities.
None were conclusive.
Then Richard received a call.
His expression changed.
“Elena.”
“What?”
“We found another recording.”
“Where?”
“In the archive system.”
“Play it.”
The second recording was older.
Twenty-two years older.
A young woman was crying.
Elena recognized the voice immediately.
Her mother.
“Please, Mother.”
A second voice answered.
Her grandmother.
“You have no idea what you've done.”
“I didn't steal anything.”
“You betrayed this family.”
“I was trying to protect Catherine.”
“You chose her over me.”
“She is your daughter.”
“She is a weakness.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Her mother's voice trembled.
“She has a child.”
“I know.”
“You can't take Lily.”
“I can take anything that belongs to this family.”
“Mother, please.”
Then came a sound.
A slap.
Elena flinched.
Her mother's voice returned, quieter.
“You're going to kill me.”
Her grandmother replied:
“No.”
A pause.
“I'm going to make you disappear.”
The recording ended.
Elena couldn't speak.
Richard looked at her.
“That confirms your grandmother threatened your mother.”
“It doesn't prove she killed her.”
“No.”
“Play everything.”
The archive contained six recordings.
The first was the argument.
The second was a conversation between Elena's grandmother and Marcus.
The third contained a financial discussion.
The fourth was almost impossible to hear.
The fifth was missing several minutes.
The sixth—
made Elena's blood run cold.
Her grandmother's voice.
“Once the accident happens, Catherine will be blamed.”
Marcus answered:
“And Elena?”
“She will know nothing.”
“What about the inheritance?”
“She receives it.”
“Why?”
“Because one day she will be the only person capable of protecting it.”
Marcus laughed.
“And if she discovers what we did?”
Her grandmother replied:
“She never will.”
The recording stopped.
Elena stared at the screen.
Richard whispered:
“Your grandmother wasn't planning to kill your mother.”
“No.”
“She was planning to make it look like an accident.”
Elena nodded.
“But someone else did it.”
“Who?”
She looked at the waveform.
“There.”
A second voice appeared faintly beneath the recording.
Richard increased the volume.
Static.
Then—
a man's voice.
“Are you sure?”
Elena froze.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it all her life.
Her father's voice.
Richard looked at her.
“That's your father.”
Elena nodded.
The recording continued.
Her grandmother said:
“You promised.”
Her father answered:
“I'll handle it.”
“What about the girl?”
“She won't remember.”
“She was four years old.”
“She'll forget.”
Elena stepped backward.
The room seemed to spin.
Her father had been there.
He had known.
Maybe he hadn't killed her mother.
But he had helped cover it up.
He had helped erase the truth.
For twenty-five years, he had looked Elena in the eyes and told her the accident was unavoidable.
He had lied.
Elena left the security room.
She walked through the mansion without speaking.
Every memory of her father suddenly felt contaminated.
The birthday cakes.
The school ceremonies.
The nights he had sat beside her bed.
The stories about her mother.
All of them.
She reached the old nursery.
The room had remained untouched since Elena was a child.
She opened the closet.
Behind a row of old dresses was a wooden box.
She didn't remember putting it there.
Inside was a small cassette tape.
A handwritten label:
FOR ELENA — WHEN SHE IS READY.
Her mother's handwriting.
Elena's hands shook.
She found an old player in the archive.
The tape crackled.
Then her mother's voice filled the room.
“My little girl.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“If you're hearing this, you're old enough to know.”
A pause.
“I am sorry.”
Elena began crying.
“I need you to understand something. The people around you will tell you that our family is built on love.”
Her mother's voice trembled.
“It isn't.”
“It's built on fear.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Your grandmother believes she is protecting you.”
“She isn't.”
“She is protecting the fortune.”
“But there is something she doesn't know.”
A long silence.
Then:
“You are not the only heir.”
Elena froze.
Her mother continued.
“Your sister is alive.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Not Catherine.”
“Your true sister.”
The tape crackled.
“She was born before you.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“Her name is Isabelle.”
The tape continued.
“Catherine is not your mother's sister.”
Elena's entire body went cold.
“She is the woman who helped me hide Isabelle.”
Elena stared at the machine.
“No…”
Her mother's voice became desperate.
“If Catherine ever tells you she is your aunt, do not believe her.”
“She will use Lily to make you trust her.”
“Lily is innocent.”
“But Catherine is not.”
Elena's heart pounded.
“Your father knows.”
“He knows where Isabelle is.”
“He knows why she was taken.”
“And if he tells you otherwise…”
Her mother's voice broke.
“Run.”
The tape ended.
Elena stood motionless.
The entire story had changed again.
Catherine wasn't her aunt.
Lily wasn't her cousin.
And the woman she had trusted might have been using the child to reach her.
But there was still one question.
Who was Isabelle?
Richard found Elena in the nursery.
She handed him the cassette.
He listened.
His face became increasingly pale.
When it ended, he said:
“This changes everything.”
Elena nodded.
“Find Isabelle.”
“We don't know where to start.”
“Yes, we do.”
She pointed toward the archive.
“Adrian.”
They found Adrian at the old marina.
He was standing beside the water.
When Elena approached, he didn't look surprised.
“You heard it.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your mother wanted you to discover it yourself.”
“My mother is dead.”
“I know.”
“You've known for twenty-five years.”
“Yes.”
Elena's voice shook.
“You let me believe Catherine was my aunt.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Lily was my cousin.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe my grandmother killed my mother.”
Adrian finally turned.
“She tried.”
“But she didn't.”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Adrian looked toward the water.
“Your father.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“No.”
“He didn't plan it.”
“Then what happened?”
“He was supposed to help your mother disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted to take Isabelle and leave.”
“Who is Isabelle?”
Adrian stared at Elena.
“Your older sister.”
“Where is she?”
“She was taken.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
“Because he believed your grandmother would kill her.”
“So he gave her away?”
“Yes.”
“To whom?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Catherine.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“But Catherine isn't my aunt.”
“No.”
“Then who is she?”
Adrian looked at her.
“The woman who raised your sister.”
Elena stepped backward.
“Isabelle is Lily's mother?”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Isabelle is Lily.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“Lily isn't Catherine's daughter.”
“She is your sister's daughter?”
“No.”
Adrian's voice became quiet.
“Lily is your sister.”
The world stopped.
Elena remembered the child.
The eyes.
The voice.
The way Lily had called her Aunt.
Elena had thought she was meeting her cousin.
But she had been holding her own sister's daughter?
No.
That still didn't make sense.
“Lily is nine.”
“Yes.”
“I'm twenty-nine.”
“Yes.”
“Isabelle would have been—”
“Twenty-nine.”
Elena stared.
“Then how can Lily be Isabelle?”
Adrian looked away.
“Because the records were changed.”
Elena's mind raced.
A missing birth certificate.
A false identity.
A child raised under another name.
The heir they tried to erase.
It wasn't a metaphor.
It was literal.
Someone had erased her sister from every official record.
And the child Elena thought was Lily—
might actually be Isabelle.
Adrian handed Elena another file.
“Your mother left this for you.”
Elena opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
The name:
ISABELLE MARIE CALLAHAN.
Date of birth:
Twenty-nine years earlier.
Mother:
Evelyn Callahan.
Father:
Unknown.
Then Elena saw the photograph.
The baby.
The same eyes.
The same face.
She knew immediately.
“That is her.”
Adrian nodded.
“Your sister.”
“Where is she now?”
“Where you've already seen her.”
Elena whispered:
“Lily.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Elena answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“Did you enjoy the recording?”
She froze.
“Who are you?”
“You've met me.”
“Damien.”
“No.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“Then who?”
The voice laughed softly.
“The man Julian thought was his enemy.”
Elena tightened her grip on the phone.
“What do you want?”
“Your sister.”
“You won't get her.”
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I don't want Isabelle dead.”
“Then why are you hunting her?”
“I'm not.”
Silence.
“I'm protecting her.”
Elena looked toward Adrian.
“From whom?”
The voice became quiet.
“From Catherine.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Catherine has her.”
“No.”
“She took Julian.”
“Yes.”
“She has Isabelle.”
“No.”
“Then where is she?”
A pause.
Then:
“She's with your father.”
Elena froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“He's alive?”
“He has been alive all this time.”
“Where?”
The caller gave her an address.
Elena recognized it.
The old Callahan observatory.
A place abandoned since her mother's death.
The voice continued.
“Go there before midnight.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian has something you need.”
“What?”
“The second recording.”
The line went dead.
Elena stared at the phone.
Richard looked at her.
“What happened?”
Elena slowly raised her eyes.
“We're going to the observatory.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian has been lying.”
“About what?”
Elena looked at the dark sky.
“Everything.”
At 11:48 p.m., Elena reached the observatory.
The doors were unlocked.
She entered.
The building smelled of dust and rain.
A single light glowed upstairs.
She climbed the stairs.
At the top, she found Julian.
He was sitting beside an old telescope.
His wrists were tied.
His face was bruised.
Catherine stood behind him.
But she wasn't alone.
A man stood beside the window.
Elena stopped.
Her father.
Alive.
He turned toward her.
“Elena.”
She stared.
“You lied to me.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You lied about my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about Isabelle.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Lily was my cousin.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her father looked toward Julian.
“Because I was trying to protect you.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Her father stepped closer.
“Your mother asked me to hide your sister.”
“From whom?”
“From your grandmother.”
“Then why did you give her to Catherine?”
“I didn't.”
Elena stopped.
“What?”
Her father looked toward Catherine.
“She took her.”
Catherine's face changed.
Elena turned.
“Is that true?”
Catherine said nothing.
Her father continued.
“Catherine stole Isabelle and disappeared.”
“And Lily?”
Catherine finally spoke.
“Lily is not Isabelle.”
Elena's heart stopped.
She looked at Julian.
He was crying.
Catherine smiled.
“You've been chasing the wrong child.”
Elena's voice shook.
“Where is my sister?”
Catherine stepped forward.
“She's been beside you for nine years.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
Catherine looked at Julian.
Then back at Elena.
“Vanessa.”
Silence.
Elena stared.
“No.”
Catherine smiled.
“Vanessa is Isabelle.”
The room went completely still.
Julian looked at Elena.
“I found out three months ago.”
Elena's mind exploded with questions.
Vanessa.
The mistress.
The woman who had stolen her husband.
The woman who wore her emerald.
The woman she had hated.
Her sister?
Catherine whispered:
“She was never your husband's mistress by accident.”
Elena's face went pale.
“She was sent to you.”
“By whom?”
Catherine looked toward the man beside the window.
“Your father.”
Elena turned.
Her father looked at her.
And for the first time in twenty-nine years—
he looked terrified.
Because the final recording was about to reveal why he had sent his own daughter into Elena's marriage.
May you like
And Elena was about to learn that the woman she had hated most...
was the sister she had spent her entire life trying to find.
