CHAPTER 7 — THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE

CHAPTER 7 — THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Elena did not move for several seconds after the call ended.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

She could hear the faint ticking of the antique clock in the hallway.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

The little girl.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

Those unmistakable eyes.

Elena's eyes.

The same eyes her mother had once had.

The same eyes Elena saw every morning in the mirror.

She turned the photograph over.

SHE IS HERE.

Her fingers trembled.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

DO NOT CALL THE POLICE.

Another followed.

DO NOT TRUST MARCUS.

Then:

IF YOU WANT HER ALIVE, COME TO THE OLD CHAPEL BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Elena stared at the screen.

There was no signature.

She didn't need one.

Someone knew she had received the call.

Someone was watching her.

She reached for her coat.

Then stopped.

Her father's study was still empty.

He had disappeared.

The same night she discovered the child.

The same night Adrian had warned her about Damien.

The same night the truth about her family was beginning to surface.

It couldn't be coincidence.

Elena picked up the photograph.

“Who are you?” she whispered.

The child in the picture couldn't answer.

But Elena was going to find her.

Even if it destroyed everything.

At 10:36 p.m., Elena arrived at the old chapel.

It had been abandoned for more than a decade.

No lights.

No cars.

No guards.

Only rain falling against the cracked stone walls.

She stepped inside.

“Hello?”

Her voice echoed.

Nothing.

She walked farther.

A floorboard creaked behind her.

Elena turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Elena's breath stopped.

The woman was older.

Perhaps fifty.

Her dark hair was streaked with gray.

Her face was thinner than the photograph.

But the eyes—

Those eyes.

Elena knew them.

She had spent her entire life looking at them in her own reflection.

The woman whispered:

“Elena.”

Elena couldn't speak.

The woman took one step forward.

“My name is Catherine.”

Elena's knees nearly gave way.

“Catherine…”

“My sister called me that.”

Elena stared.

“My mother?”

Catherine nodded.

“She was your mother too.”

The words shattered something inside Elena.

“My mother had no sister.”

“She did.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because your grandmother ordered everyone to forget I existed.”

Elena felt tears burning her eyes.

“Why?”

Catherine looked toward the altar.

“Because I had a daughter.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“The child.”

Catherine nodded.

“She is your cousin.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“For now.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Who is she?”

Catherine hesitated.

“Her name is Lily.”

“Why did she call me Aunt?”

“Because that's what I taught her to call you.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted her to know she had family.”

Elena's voice cracked.

“Why did you hide her?”

Catherine looked at her.

“Because the people who destroyed our family were looking for her.”

“Damien?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily is the last living person who can prove what happened twenty-two years ago.”

Elena stared at her.

“What happened?”

Catherine's eyes filled with pain.

“Your grandmother stole my inheritance.”

Elena frowned.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Catherine shook her head.

“She stole yours too.”

Elena went silent.

“The money?”

“All of it.”

“The three hundred twelve million?”

Catherine nodded.

“That money belonged to our mother.”

Elena's breathing became shallow.

“So why was it transferred to me?”

“Because your grandmother knew I would fight for it.”

“And she couldn't trust me?”

“She didn't trust anyone.”

Catherine looked toward the rain outside.

“Your grandmother believed the family would collapse if the inheritance was divided.”

“So she chose me.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because you were obedient.”

Elena recoiled.

“I was a child.”

“I know.”

Catherine's voice softened.

“And that's why she chose you.”

A sound came from outside.

Both women froze.

Footsteps.

Catherine grabbed Elena's wrist.

“We have to go.”

“Where?”

“Now.”

They hurried through a side door.

Outside, a black SUV was parked across the road.

Its headlights were off.

Elena stared.

“Who's that?”

Catherine whispered:

“Damien.”

The SUV's engine started.

Elena's heart raced.

“Where's Lily?”

“Nearby.”

“Take me to her.”

Catherine hesitated.

Then nodded.

They drove for fifteen minutes.

No conversation.

Finally, Catherine stopped beside an old farmhouse.

The lights were off.

Elena followed her inside.

A small bedroom was at the back.

Catherine opened the door.

A little girl sat on the bed.

She was perhaps nine years old.

She held a stuffed rabbit.

When she saw Elena, she stood.

“Aunt Elena?”

Elena's heart broke.

She crouched.

“Yes.”

The girl stared at her.

“You look like Mommy.”

Elena smiled through tears.

“So do you.”

Lily ran toward her.

Elena caught her.

For a moment, nothing else mattered.

Not Julian.

Not Vanessa.

Not Marcus.

Not the money.

Just this child.

Her family.

A family she had never known existed.

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy said you would save me.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I will.”

Lily looked at her.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

A crash came from the front door.

Catherine pushed Elena behind her.

“Stay here.”

Another crash.

The door broke open.

Men entered.

Elena grabbed Lily.

“Who are they?”

Catherine whispered:

“Damien's people.”

A man's voice echoed through the house.

“Catherine!”

Catherine closed her eyes.

“It's over.”

Elena looked around.

“There has to be another exit.”

“There is.”

“Where?”

“Behind the fireplace.”

They moved quickly.

Catherine pulled a hidden lever.

The fireplace shifted.

A narrow passage opened.

Elena stared.

“You knew this was here?”

“Our mother built it.”

They entered.

The stone wall closed behind them.

Darkness surrounded them.

Lily clung to Elena's hand.

“Are they going to hurt us?”

“No.”

Elena squeezed her hand.

“I'm here.”

The passage led beneath the farmhouse.

After several minutes, they emerged into an underground room.

There were shelves.

Documents.

Photographs.

Old computers.

Boxes.

Elena looked around.

“What is this?”

Catherine answered:

“Your mother's archive.”

Elena stepped forward.

A photograph on the wall caught her attention.

Her mother.

Catherine.

And another woman.

Elena stared.

“Who is she?”

Catherine looked at the photograph.

“Your grandmother.”

“But she looks…”

“Younger.”

“No.”

Elena pointed.

“She looks happy.”

Catherine smiled sadly.

“She was.”

“What happened?”

“Power.”

Catherine touched the photograph.

“Power changed her.”

Elena opened the first box.

Inside were financial records.

She read one.

Then another.

Her eyes widened.

“These aren't Callahan accounts.”

“No.”

“They're Vale accounts.”

Catherine nodded.

“Your grandmother used Adrian.”

“Why?”

“To hide money.”

Elena looked up.

“From whom?”

“From Marcus.”

“Marcus was already stealing?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Long before you were born.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“And Adrian?”

“He helped your grandmother expose him.”

“Then why did she make Adrian disappear?”

Catherine looked at her.

“Because Adrian discovered something he wasn't supposed to know.”

“What?”

“That Marcus wasn't acting alone.”

Elena felt a chill.

“Who was helping him?”

Catherine didn't answer.

Instead, she handed Elena a sealed envelope.

“Read this.”

Elena opened it.

The letter was written by her mother.

Her hands trembled.

Catherine,

If you're reading this, then I failed to protect you.

Mother has discovered what we did.

She knows Lily exists.

She also knows Elena exists.

Elena stopped.

Her heart pounded.

She continued.

She says one daughter will inherit everything.

The other must disappear.

Elena looked at Catherine.

“Who did she mean?”

Catherine's eyes filled with tears.

“She meant me.”

Elena looked back at the letter.

If anything happens to me, keep Lily away from the Callahans.

And never let Elena know the truth until she is old enough to defend herself.

Because Mother has decided that Elena will become the sole heir.

Elena's hands went numb.

Her grandmother had chosen her.

Not because she loved her more.

Because she intended to erase Catherine.

A noise came from above.

Lily gasped.

“They found us.”

Catherine looked toward the ceiling.

“We need to leave.”

Elena folded the letter.

“No.”

Catherine looked at her.

“What?”

“No more running.”

“Elena—”

“They've been controlling us for twenty-two years.”

She looked at Lily.

“They won't control her anymore.”

Catherine stared at her.

“You don't understand Damien.”

“I understand enough.”

“He will kill you.”

“Then let him try.”

Suddenly the underground door opened.

A man stood there.

Damien.

Elena stepped in front of Lily.

Damien smiled.

“You finally found her.”

Elena's voice was cold.

“You've been searching for Lily for years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she is the heir.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Damien looked at Lily.

“Not you.”

He pointed toward Elena.

“You were never supposed to inherit the entire trust.”

Elena stared.

Catherine stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.”

Damien continued.

“Your grandmother divided the inheritance before she died.”

“Between Elena and Lily.”

Elena's face went pale.

“The three hundred twelve million…”

“Half belongs to Lily.”

Elena looked at Catherine.

“Is that true?”

Catherine nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Damien smiled.

“And that's why Marcus has spent twenty-two years trying to find her.”

“Why?”

“Because if Lily dies, her share returns to the main family trust.”

“And Marcus controls it.”

“Exactly.”

Elena finally understood.

Marcus hadn't been stealing because he wanted money.

He wanted the entire inheritance.

Lily was the obstacle.

The missing heir.

The child everyone had tried to erase.

The one person standing between Marcus and complete control.

Damien stepped closer.

“Give me the girl.”

“No.”

“Then you all die.”

Elena looked at him.

“You're working for Marcus.”

Damien smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Elena frowned.

“What?”

“Marcus thinks I'm working for him.”

“And you're not?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Damien looked toward Lily.

“I work for her.”

Silence.

Elena stared.

“What?”

Damien lowered his voice.

“I've spent twenty-two years protecting her.”

Catherine looked shocked.

“Then why did you attack us?”

“I needed to force you out of hiding.”

“You could have told us.”

“You wouldn't have believed me.”

Elena stared at him.

“Then why Vanessa?”

Damien's expression hardened.

“Vanessa was never meant to hurt you.”

“She helped steal millions.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To expose Marcus's network.”

Elena shook her head.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

Damien shrugged.

“Your marriage was already destroyed.”

She wanted to argue.

But she couldn't.

A gunshot echoed above them.

Everyone froze.

Damien looked toward the ceiling.

“Marcus.”

Catherine whispered:

“He found us.”

Damien looked at Elena.

“Take Lily.”

“Where?”

“There's another tunnel.”

“Where does it lead?”

“Blackwater Marina.”

Elena stared.

“Again?”

Damien nodded.

“It's the only place Marcus won't search.”

“Why?”

“Because he thinks it's where Adrian died.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“Adrian?”

Damien looked at her.

“He didn't die there.”

“Then where is he?”

Damien smiled faintly.

“You already know.”

Elena froze.

Her father.

She had thought he was missing.

But Adrian had said her father was with Marcus.

If Adrian had survived—

then perhaps her father knew.

Perhaps he had been part of the plan.

Perhaps everyone had lied.

They ran.

The tunnel stretched beneath the earth.

Lily held Elena's hand.

Catherine followed.

Damien stayed behind.

“Go!”

Elena looked back.

“What about you?”

“I'll slow them down.”

“No.”

“You promised Lily you'd save her.”

“Yes.”

“Then go.”

Elena hesitated.

Then she ran.

At the marina, Elena found a boat waiting.

She helped Lily aboard.

Catherine followed.

The engine started.

But before they could leave, a figure appeared on the dock.

Marcus.

He held a gun.

“ELENA!”

She froze.

Marcus looked furious.

“Give me the child.”

“No.”

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You are protecting a thief.”

Elena stared.

“A thief?”

“Catherine stole from this family.”

Catherine shouted:

“Liar!”

Marcus pointed the gun.

“She was supposed to die twenty-two years ago.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“What did you say?”

Marcus's face changed.

He realized he'd revealed too much.

Elena stared at him.

“You tried to kill her.”

Marcus lowered the gun.

“I was protecting the family.”

“No.”

Elena's voice became ice.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Marcus looked toward Lily.

“She is dangerous.”

“She is a child.”

“She is the last witness.”

“To what?”

Marcus didn't answer.

Elena stepped forward.

“To what?”

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“The murder of your mother.”

Silence.

Elena stopped breathing.

Catherine covered her mouth.

Lily began crying.

Marcus whispered:

“Now you know.”

And then he raised the gun.

Before he could fire—

a shot came from behind him.

Marcus dropped the weapon.

He fell to his knees.

Elena stared past him.

A man stood on the dock.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Alive.

Adrian Vale.

He looked at Elena.

“I told you the truth would destroy everything.”

Elena could barely speak.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother…”

Adrian's face filled with sorrow.

“She didn't die in an accident.”

Elena's heart shattered.

“Who killed her?”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Then back at Elena.

“Your grandmother.”

The world went silent.

And Elena finally understood why her family had spent twenty-two years trying to erase the truth.

Because the woman who had built the Callahan empire...

had also built it on blood.
