Chapter 11: The Witness They Couldn't Silence

My Husband Ordered Two Hundred Strikes—Then He Learned Who My Father Really Was
Chapter 11: The Witness They Couldn't Silence
The gunshot echoed through the courtroom like thunder.
For one suspended heartbeat, no one moved.
Then panic erupted.
People screamed.
Chairs crashed to the floor.
Federal marshals drew their weapons and rushed toward the sound.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore shouted for everyone to remain where they were, but her voice disappeared beneath the chaos.
Emergency lights flickered on, bathing the courtroom in a dim red glow.
Richard Carter's first instinct was not to look for the shooter.
It was to find Evelyn.
He reached her within seconds.
"Evelyn!"
"I'm here."
She was shaken but unharmed.
Richard pulled her behind the heavy oak bench as marshals secured the room.
Agent Michael Grant shouted commands into his radio.
"Seal every exit!"
"No one leaves this courthouse!"
The doors slammed shut.
The courtroom became a locked crime scene.
At the far end of the room, a man lay on the floor.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
It wasn't Senator Charles Hawthorne.
It was one of the federal marshals.
The bullet had struck him while he was shielding several civilians.
Paramedics rushed forward.
"He has a pulse!"
The announcement brought a wave of relief.
The shooter had missed the intended target.
Or perhaps...
The marshal had never been the target at all.
Senator Hawthorne stood perfectly still.
Too still.
Richard noticed it immediately.
Most innocent people reacted with fear.
Hawthorne looked almost... disappointed.
As though something had failed to happen.
Marcus Hale leaned closer to Richard.
"He knew."
Richard nodded slightly.
"He expected the lights to go out."
Within minutes, security footage from the courthouse was recovered.
Most cameras had gone dark during the outage.
Most.
One emergency backup camera near the east hallway had continued recording on an isolated power source.
The image was grainy.
The shooter wore a black jacket and a baseball cap.
Only part of his face was visible.
Marcus enlarged the frame.
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"It's Thomas."
Richard stared at the screen in disbelief.
His former head of security.
The same man who had betrayed the Carter family.
Thomas had disappeared before the lights came back on.
But he had left something behind.
Near the jury box, investigators discovered a small encrypted flash drive.
Agent Grant carefully placed it inside an evidence bag.
"It wasn't there before."
Marcus examined the photographs taken earlier that morning.
"No."
"It was planted during the blackout."
Richard frowned.
"Then Thomas wanted us to find it."
Back at Carter International Headquarters, cybersecurity specialists bypassed the drive's encryption.
A single video file appeared.
The timestamp showed it had been recorded only twelve hours earlier.
Richard, Evelyn, Marcus, David, Agent Grant, and Judge Whitmore watched together in a secure conference room.
The screen remained black for several seconds.
Then Celeste Monroe appeared.
She looked exhausted.
Her hands trembled.
"If you're watching this..."
She paused, taking a slow breath.
"...then I'm probably dead."
Silence filled the room.
"I spent years believing I was building a better future."
"I told myself the lies were necessary."
"The manipulation."
"The theft."
"The people who disappeared."
"I convinced myself they deserved it."
Her voice cracked.
"I was wrong."
She looked directly into the camera.
"Edward Sinclair never intended to reward loyalty."
"He only rewarded obedience."
The video continued.
"Everyone thinks the Phoenix Circle is a criminal organization."
"It isn't."
"It's a succession plan."
Marcus exchanged a puzzled glance with Richard.
"A succession plan?"
Celeste nodded in the recording.
"Every generation, they identify powerful families."
"They infiltrate them."
"They wait."
"Then they inherit what they never built."
She began naming names.
Corporate executives.
Judges.
Investment bankers.
Foreign ministers.
Several names shocked even Richard.
People he had known for decades.
People he had trusted.
Then she spoke the one name that froze the room.
"Edward Sinclair never founded the Phoenix Circle."
"He inherited it."
Richard whispered,
"From who?"
Almost as if answering his question, Celeste continued.
"The founder is still alive."
Marcus leaned toward the screen.
"Who is it?"
Celeste reached into her pocket and removed an old photograph.
It showed a group of men standing outside a country estate nearly fifty years earlier.
One face had been circled in red.
She held the image close to the camera.
Richard's breathing stopped.
The man was unmistakable.
Young.
Confident.
Smiling.
Senator Charles Hawthorne.
Not as a politician.
As one of the original founders.
The room fell silent.
Judge Whitmore slowly removed her glasses.
"If this is authentic..."
David finished the sentence.
"It changes everything."
But the video wasn't over.
Celeste looked frightened now.
"As for Evelyn..."
She smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry."
"I hated you because Edward ordered me to."
"You were never the real target."
Evelyn stared at the screen.
"Then who was?"
Celeste answered.
"Richard."
"Your father."
She explained that Project Orchid had never been designed simply to manipulate Nathan Ashford.
Nathan had been chosen because of Evelyn.
Evelyn had been chosen because of Richard.
Everything traced back to Carter International.
Edward believed that the only way to seize Richard's empire was to destroy the people he loved.
Nathan had simply been the perfect weapon.
Then Celeste revealed one final secret.
"There is another witness."
"Someone Edward could never find."
Marcus frowned.
"Who?"
Celeste smiled faintly.
"The woman who kept the original records."
"The one person who never joined the Phoenix Circle."
"Find..."
The video suddenly glitched.
Static filled the screen.
The audio cut out.
When the image returned, Celeste whispered only two words before the recording ended.
"...Anna Pierce."
No one in the room recognized the name.
Except Richard.
He slowly sank into his chair.
Marcus looked at him.
"You know her."
Richard nodded.
"Thirty-two years ago..."
"She was Edward Sinclair's executive assistant."
David frowned.
"I thought Margaret Voss held that position."
Richard looked up.
"That's what everyone believed."
He paused.
"Anna Pierce disappeared the week before Margaret was hired."
Marcus immediately searched every government database.
Nothing.
No driver's license.
No passport.
No tax records.
No death certificate.
It was as if Anna Pierce had vanished from history.
Just then, Agent Grant's secure phone rang.
He answered.
His expression darkened.
"What?"
The room fell silent.
Grant ended the call and looked at Richard.
"The safe house where we were holding Celeste Monroe..."
He hesitated.
"Has been attacked."
Evelyn's voice was barely audible.
"Is she alive?"
Grant looked down.
"We don't know."
"But before the attackers arrived..."
He held up another evidence bag.
"She mailed this."
Inside was a worn leather notebook.
The cover carried faded gold lettering.
A.P.
Richard recognized it immediately.
Anna Pierce's initials.
He carefully opened the first page.
Instead of handwritten notes, there was a single sentence.
If you are reading this, Richard... you were never meant to survive long enough to find me.
Beneath the message...
There was an address.
And a date.
Tomorrow.
May you like
At midnight.
