Chapter 15: The Last Betrayal

My Husband Ordered Two Hundred Strikes—Then He Learned Who My Father Really Was
Chapter 15: The Last Betrayal
The deepest betrayals are never committed by enemies.
They come from the people who earn your trust, protect your secrets, share your victories, and promise to stand beside you until the end.
Richard Carter had survived corporate wars, political conspiracies, and assassination attempts.
He believed he had already discovered every betrayal that mattered.
He was wrong.
The final betrayal had been waiting beside him all along.
The image of the Academy lingered in everyone's mind.
Dozens of children.
Perfect uniforms.
Perfect discipline.
Perfect silence.
Richard could not stop thinking about them.
"They're raising another generation," he murmured.
Anna Pierce nodded sadly.
"They don't recruit children."
"They inherit them."
Inside Carter Manor's underground operations room, Marcus Hale expanded satellite images collected over the past decade.
One location repeatedly appeared in Phoenix Circle communications.
A remote estate hidden in the Swiss Alps.
Officially, it was an international leadership academy for gifted students.
Unofficially...
It did not exist.
Every government database listed it as private educational property.
No inspectors had ever entered.
No public records identified its owners.
Marcus zoomed in.
"There."
A stone crest above the main gate.
A phoenix surrounded by thirteen stars.
Anna looked away.
"I hoped they had abandoned it."
Richard turned toward her.
"How long have you known?"
Anna hesitated.
"Long enough to regret surviving."
She explained that decades earlier, wealthy families connected to the Phoenix Circle had secretly sent selected children to the Academy.
They were taught languages, economics, politics, psychology, and law.
But above everything else...
They were taught loyalty.
Not to their parents.
Not to their countries.
Only to the Circle.
"When they graduated," Anna said quietly, "they entered governments, corporations, banks, and courts."
Marcus finished the thought.
"They became invisible."
Anna nodded.
"And untouchable."
Agent Michael Grant entered carrying an intelligence report.
"We've identified thirty-seven former Academy students."
David looked relieved.
"Only thirty-seven?"
Grant didn't smile.
"Those are the ones we know."
Anna whispered,
"There are hundreds."
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Edward Sinclair stood inside a quiet mountain chapel overlooking the Academy.
He watched students crossing the courtyard below.
A young instructor approached him.
"They've frozen more accounts."
Edward remained calm.
"I expected that."
"Our directors are asking for instructions."
Edward turned toward the stained-glass window.
"No."
"They're asking for permission to panic."
He smiled faintly.
"Tell them the same thing my father told me."
"'Empires built on money collapse.'"
"'Empires built on belief survive.'"
The instructor nodded.
Edward looked toward the mountains.
"Prepare the next generation."
Back in the United States, Nathan Ashford received unexpected visitors.
Richard Carter and Evelyn entered the secure interview room.
Nathan stood awkwardly.
"I wasn't expecting you."
Richard remained composed.
"We need answers."
Nathan nodded.
"If I have them."
Marcus projected several photographs.
One face immediately caught Nathan's attention.
A middle-aged executive with silver hair.
Nathan frowned.
"I know him."
Richard leaned forward.
"Who is he?"
"Victor Lang."
"He sat on Ashford Global's advisory board for two years."
Marcus exchanged a glance with David.
"There is no Victor Lang in any corporate registry."
Nathan frowned.
"He used another name?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"He used dozens."
Nathan remembered something else.
"Wait..."
"He gave Celeste a black notebook."
"When?"
"The night before..."
His voice faltered.
"The night I ordered the two hundred strikes."
Evelyn's expression remained steady, but Richard saw the pain flash across her eyes.
Nathan swallowed hard.
"I thought it contained legal documents."
Marcus asked,
"What did Celeste say?"
Nathan closed his eyes.
"She said..."
"'Tomorrow everything changes.'"
That evening, investigators searched a storage facility connected to Victor Lang.
Most of it had already been emptied.
But hidden beneath a false floor, agents found a single safe.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Encrypted phones.
And the familiar black notebook Nathan had described.
Marcus carefully opened it.
Each page contained names.
Dates.
Payments.
Orders.
Unlike Anna's journals, this notebook documented current operations.
Living members.
Active assets.
Pending missions.
Richard felt hope returning.
"We finally have them."
Marcus turned another page.
His smile vanished.
At the top of the final list was a heading.
Internal Asset – Carter Family
Below it appeared one name.
David Lin.
Silence filled the room.
David stared at the page.
"What?"
Marcus slowly looked up.
"It says you've been reporting to the Phoenix Circle for six years."
Richard immediately shook his head.
"Impossible."
David had worked beside him for nearly fifteen years.
He had risked his life more than once.
He had helped expose Edward Sinclair.
"It has to be forged," Evelyn said.
Marcus wanted to believe her.
Then he opened another file recovered from the safe.
Encrypted emails.
Bank transfers.
Voice recordings.
Every trail pointed to David.
Grant quietly stepped closer.
"David..."
David looked around the room in disbelief.
"I didn't do this."
Marcus answered carefully.
"Then explain the transfers."
"I can't."
"The recordings?"
"I've never heard them."
"The offshore accounts?"
"I don't own them."
Richard searched David's face.
He saw confusion.
Fear.
Hurt.
But not guilt.
Anna suddenly spoke.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
She pointed toward the notebook.
"The handwriting."
Marcus frowned.
"What about it?"
"That's not Edward's."
Richard looked closer.
Anna continued.
"I've seen this writing before."
She closed her eyes.
"Catherine."
The room froze.
Richard's voice barely emerged.
"My wife?"
Anna nodded slowly.
"No..."
She reached for the notebook.
"Not Catherine."
She turned several pages before stopping.
"I remember now."
"The woman who forged Catherine's letters."
Marcus looked at her.
"Who?"
Anna whispered one name.
"Margaret Voss."
Relief washed across the room.
David exhaled deeply.
"So the notebook..."
"...was planted."
Marcus nodded.
"To destroy us from within."
Richard slowly looked at David.
"I'm sorry."
David answered quietly.
"They almost succeeded."
Before anyone could continue, alarms sounded throughout Carter Manor.
Security officers rushed into the operations room.
"Sir!"
Marcus turned.
"What happened?"
"Someone accessed the private family vault."
Richard's face hardened.
"Who?"
The officer hesitated.
"The biometric system shows..."
He looked confused.
"...you."
Richard frowned.
"I've been here all evening."
Marcus immediately checked the surveillance feeds.
Every camera covering the vault had gone offline for exactly four minutes.
When the images returned...
The vault door stood open.
One item was missing.
Not money.
Not jewels.
Not documents.
Richard whispered in disbelief.
"Catherine's wedding ring."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Why would anyone steal Mom's ring?"
Anna's face slowly lost all color.
She sank into a chair.
"Oh no..."
Richard rushed to her.
"What is it?"
Tears filled Anna's eyes.
"Because the ring wasn't just a wedding ring."
She looked directly at Evelyn.
"Your mother hid something inside it."
Marcus asked,
"What?"
Anna answered with trembling certainty.
"The only key capable of opening the Phoenix Circle's original archive."
Somewhere in the darkness beyond Carter Manor...
The thief now possessed the one object that could unlock every secret the Circle had protected for half a century.
And for the first time since the investigation began...
May you like
Edward Sinclair was once again one step ahead.
