Chapter 2: The Father Behind The Helicopters

My Husband Ordered Two Hundred Strikes—Then He Learned Who My Father Really Was

Chapter 2: The Father Behind The Helicopters

Power rarely announced itself.

It didn't need loud voices.

It didn't need expensive watches or private jets.

Real power arrived quietly.

It entered the room without asking permission.

And everyone else instinctively stepped aside.

Nathan Ashford understood that truth the moment Richard Carter walked through the doors of Blackthorn Manor.

The grand hall had fallen into complete silence.

The only sound came from the rain tapping against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Richard Carter stood beside his daughter, his charcoal overcoat now wrapped around Evelyn's trembling shoulders.

He hadn't raised his voice.

He hadn't threatened anyone.

Yet every member of the tactical team waited for his slightest gesture before moving.

Nathan forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

He looked around the room as if expecting someone to reveal it was all an elaborate prank.

"You hired actors?"

No one answered.

Celeste Monroe folded her arms.

"Call security."

One of the tactical officers replied calmly.

"We already have."

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The officer handed him a tablet.

On the screen was the live security system of Blackthorn Manor.

Every entrance.

Every hallway.

Every office.

Every camera.

Each feed displayed the same message.

CONTROL TRANSFERRED

Nathan's confidence flickered.

"Impossible."

"Our cybersecurity division designed this network."

Richard finally spoke.

"My company acquired the firm that designed your system eight years ago."

Nathan blinked.

"You what?"

"You signed the acquisition approval yourself."

Nathan grabbed the tablet.

His fingers moved frantically through old corporate records.

Then his face slowly drained of color.

There it was.

A routine acquisition.

A small cybersecurity company.

He barely remembered approving it.

The seller had been a private investment fund.

Carter Strategic Holdings.

Nathan had never questioned who owned the fund.

Now he knew.

"You planned this?"

Nathan asked.

Richard looked at him with calm disappointment.

"No."

"I prepared for it."

"There is a difference."

Evelyn watched her father quietly.

She had seen this expression only once before.

When a foreign corporation had attempted to bribe one of his executives.

Richard never shouted.

He simply removed every path his enemies could use to escape.

Nathan laughed again, though this time it sounded forced.

"So what?"

"You freeze a few accounts."

"I hire better lawyers."

"I'll sue every one of you."

Richard nodded politely.

"You certainly may."

He turned slightly.

"David."

A tall man wearing wire-rimmed glasses stepped forward.

"My name is David Lin."

"Chief Legal Counsel, Carter International."

He placed three thick folders on the marble table.

"The first contains evidence of tax fraud."

"The second documents corporate bribery."

"The third concerns attempted murder."

Nathan's smile disappeared.

Celeste stepped forward.

"This is harassment."

David looked at her.

"No, Miss Monroe."

He opened the third folder.

"This is your voice."

He pressed a button.

A recording echoed through the hall.

Celeste's voice was unmistakable.

"Nathan, she'll never leave unless she's afraid."

"Then make her afraid."

Another voice.

Nathan.

"Nobody will question a husband disciplining his unstable wife."

The recording ended.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the confession itself.

Celeste stared at Evelyn.

"You recorded us?"

Evelyn gently touched the sapphire pendant resting against her neck.

"You never noticed."

Richard looked toward the tactical commander.

"Medical team."

Two physicians entered immediately.

Without asking permission, they carefully examined Evelyn.

The older doctor frowned as he inspected her injuries.

"Multiple deep lacerations."

"Severe blood loss."

"Possible fractured ribs."

He looked at Richard.

"She needs surgery tonight."

Nathan suddenly stepped forward.

"She's my wife."

Richard's eyes finally met his.

"No."

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"Tonight..."

"You are merely the man who assaulted my daughter."

Outside, more vehicles entered the estate.

Not police.

Federal investigators.

Financial crime agents.

Cybercrime specialists.

Forensic accountants.

Nathan watched through the windows as they spread across the property with military precision.

"What is all this?"

Richard answered without looking.

"The beginning."

Hours earlier...

The moment Evelyn had whispered the words Destroy his life, Richard Carter had activated Code Black.

It was a protocol known only to twelve people in the entire Carter organization.

For nearly four years, Richard had quietly prepared it.

Not because he expected Nathan to fail.

Because he feared one day he might.

Every company connected to Ashford Global had already been mapped.

Every offshore account traced.

Every shell corporation monitored.

Every suspicious contract copied.

Richard hadn't investigated Nathan after the assault.

He had begun investigating him the day Evelyn married him.

Just in case.

Nathan slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"My father trusted me."

"You set me up."

"No."

Her eyes remained steady.

"You destroyed yourself."

Celeste grabbed Nathan's arm.

"We're leaving."

They headed toward the front doors.

Two tactical officers calmly stepped into their path.

"You are not authorized to leave."

Nathan's patience finally shattered.

"You can't hold us here."

A new voice answered from behind.

"Actually..."

Everyone turned.

FBI Special Agent Michael Grant entered holding a federal arrest warrant.

"We can."

Grant approached Nathan first.

"Nathan Ashford."

"You are under federal investigation for financial fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and aggravated domestic assault."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"This is because of her?"

Grant looked at Evelyn's blood-soaked dress.

"No."

"This is because of you."

Celeste attempted to back away.

Grant raised another warrant.

"Celeste Monroe."

"You are also under investigation."

Her voice trembled.

"You have no proof."

David Lin quietly handed the agent another envelope.

"You do now."

Inside were bank transfers totaling eighty-seven million dollars.

Each routed through companies secretly controlled by Celeste.

Each approved by Nathan.

Neither had realized every transaction had been copied years earlier.

Richard walked toward one of the enormous windows overlooking the estate.

Helicopters continued circling above.

Searchlights swept across the grounds.

Nathan finally asked the question that had haunted him since Richard arrived.

"Who are you?"

Richard remained silent for several seconds.

Then he answered.

"I am the man you never bothered to know."

He reached into his pocket and handed Nathan a folded newspaper.

It was nearly twenty years old.

The front-page headline read:

CARTER INTERNATIONAL FOUNDER RETIRES AFTER RECORD-BREAKING GLOBAL EXPANSION

Beneath the headline stood a photograph.

A much younger Richard Carter shaking hands with presidents, prime ministers, and business leaders from around the world.

Nathan stared at the image.

His breathing became uneven.

"I've..."

"I've seen this before."

Richard nodded.

"Most people have."

"They simply never connected the name."

Nathan looked at Evelyn.

"You never told me."

She smiled sadly.

"You never asked."

"You spent four years talking about yourself."

"You never once wondered who raised me."

Those words hurt more than the warrants.

Because Nathan knew they were true.

Just then, one of Richard's security officers approached quietly.

"Sir."

Richard turned.

"We found the underground office."

Nathan's face changed instantly.

Richard noticed.

"What office?"

The officer handed him several photographs.

A hidden room beneath Blackthorn Manor.

Servers.

Encrypted computers.

Stacks of confidential financial records.

And a private vault.

Richard looked back at Nathan.

"So..."

"There are even more secrets."

Nathan remained silent.

For the first time that night...

He looked afraid.

Richard slowly folded the photographs.

Then spoke the words that made everyone in the room shiver.

"I didn't send helicopters for revenge."

"I sent them because I believe what we're about to uncover..."

He glanced toward the hidden office beneath the mansion.

"...is much bigger than my daughter's marriage."

Somewhere beneath Blackthorn Manor...

A secret powerful enough to shake governments had been waiting for someone to find it.

And Nathan Ashford had unknowingly built his empire directly above it.
