Chapter 3: The Empire Nathan Never Understood

My Husband Ordered Two Hundred Strikes—Then He Learned Who My Father Really Was

Chapter 3: The Empire Nathan Never Understood

Some fortunes are measured in money.

Others are measured in influence.

Nathan Ashford had spent his entire life chasing the first.

Richard Carter had spent decades building the second.

That was why one man believed he ruled the world...

While the other quietly shaped it.

The first rays of dawn broke across Blackthorn Manor as federal agents continued searching every corner of the estate.

Luxury cars lined the circular driveway.

Helicopters hovered overhead.

News helicopters remained outside the restricted airspace, broadcasting live images of one of the country's most powerful CEOs watching his empire crumble.

Nathan stood inside the grand hall with his hands clasped in front of him.

He had not been handcuffed—not yet.

Agent Michael Grant wanted answers before making an arrest.

Beside him, Celeste Monroe sat pale and silent.

The confidence that had defined her the night before had disappeared.

She now understood she was no longer watching someone else's downfall.

She was living her own.

Evelyn had been taken to the estate's temporary medical unit.

After treating the deep wounds across her back, the physicians insisted she be transferred to Carter Medical Center.

She refused.

"There are still questions that need answers."

Richard looked at his daughter with quiet concern.

"You've already endured enough."

She smiled faintly.

"I endured it for this moment."

"I'm staying."

Richard knew that expression.

It was the same determination her mother had carried until the day she died.

There was no changing her mind.

Meanwhile, beneath Blackthorn Manor, forensic teams entered the hidden underground office Nathan had tried so hard to conceal.

Rows of encrypted servers filled the room.

Wall-sized monitors displayed shipping routes stretching across continents.

Locked cabinets contained thousands of financial records.

At the center stood a massive steel vault.

Its biometric scanner had already been damaged.

Someone had tried to destroy the contents before the investigators arrived.

They had failed.

Marcus Hale, Carter International's Director of Corporate Intelligence, stepped inside carrying a digital scanner.

He was a tall man in his early forties with calm eyes and a reputation for uncovering secrets governments had failed to find.

Richard greeted him with a nod.

"What do you think?"

Marcus studied the room carefully.

"This wasn't built for accounting."

"No."

"It was built for control."

He pointed toward one wall covered in maps.

Red lines connected ports in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America.

Each route carried coded labels.

Marcus frowned.

"These aren't shipping schedules."

Richard stepped closer.

"What are they?"

Marcus zoomed in.

"They're alternate cargo routes."

"For what?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a nearby filing cabinet.

Inside were hundreds of identical contracts.

Each listed the transportation of inexpensive industrial machinery.

Yet every shipment weighed almost twice what the equipment should have.

Marcus looked up slowly.

"The cargo descriptions are fake."

Nathan remained upstairs under federal supervision when Agent Grant approached him.

"We found something interesting beneath your house."

Nathan shrugged.

"I own a logistics company."

"We keep records."

Grant studied his expression.

"You've never seen that office before?"

Nathan hesitated.

"It belongs to Operations."

Grant remained silent.

Nathan realized too late that hesitation had been enough.

Across the estate, Richard and Evelyn watched Marcus continue examining the servers.

One technician called out.

"Sir."

"We've bypassed the first layer."

The largest monitor came to life.

Thousands of encrypted files appeared.

Each carried the same symbol.

A black crown.

Marcus frowned.

"I've seen this before."

Richard looked surprised.

"Where?"

"Three years ago."

"A classified investigation involving illegal technology exports."

He looked toward Nathan through the security cameras.

"I don't think he understands what he's been transporting."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Nathan always delegated."

"He never read details."

"He trusted people who praised him."

Marcus nodded.

"Then someone used him."

Richard looked thoughtful.

"Celeste."

Marcus agreed.

"Most likely."

"But someone above her designed this."

Agent Grant entered the underground office carrying a sealed evidence bag.

"We recovered these from Nathan's private study."

Inside were handwritten notes.

Meeting schedules.

Names.

Payment instructions.

One name appeared more often than any other.

Aurelius Consortium.

Richard's expression darkened.

"I was hoping never to hear that name again."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You know them?"

Richard answered quietly.

"I helped stop them once."

Thirty years earlier, before retiring from public business, Richard Carter had secretly assisted international investigators dismantling an organization known as the Aurelius Consortium.

Officially, it had disappeared.

Unofficially...

Many believed its surviving members had quietly rebuilt under new identities.

If those same people had infiltrated Ashford Global...

Nathan's crimes might only represent a fraction of a much larger operation.

Upstairs, Celeste requested a lawyer.

Instead, Agent Grant placed several photographs before her.

Images of offshore meetings.

Private islands.

Secret bank transfers.

One photograph froze her expression completely.

It showed her shaking hands with an elderly man wearing a silver signet ring engraved with a black crown.

Grant leaned forward.

"Who is he?"

Celeste remained silent.

Grant slid another photograph across the table.

This one showed the same man attending Nathan and Evelyn's wedding.

Standing unnoticed among the guests.

Watching.

Waiting.

Nathan stared at the image.

"I've never seen him."

Richard entered the room carrying the photograph.

"No."

"You simply never noticed him."

Richard placed the picture beside another taken twenty-eight years earlier.

The same man.

Not a day older.

Standing behind one of the Aurelius Consortium founders.

Nathan felt his stomach tighten.

"That's impossible."

Richard looked directly at him.

"So is everything else you believed."

Hours later, financial news erupted across every major network.

Ashford Global shares had fallen another thirty-two percent.

International banks suspended all company credit.

Major clients canceled contracts worth billions.

Employees gathered outside headquarters demanding answers.

Board members began resigning.

The empire Nathan had spent fifteen years building wasn't collapsing because of competitors.

It was collapsing because trust had vanished overnight.

Nathan finally looked at Evelyn.

"I loved you."

She met his eyes.

"I believe you."

Hope flickered across his face.

Then she continued.

"But eventually..."

"You loved power more."

The hope disappeared.

Just as Marcus finished decrypting another server, a hidden file suddenly opened by itself.

No one had touched the keyboard.

Across every monitor appeared a single sentence.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Then the lights throughout the underground office went out.

Emergency generators activated seconds later.

When power returned...

One server rack was burning.

Automatic suppression systems filled the room with white vapor.

Technicians rushed forward.

Marcus checked the damage.

"It's gone."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"The central database."

"It erased itself."

Marcus reached into the smoking cabinet and removed one surviving hard drive.

Its label read:

PROJECT PHOENIX

He looked at Richard.

"I don't think Nathan built this empire."

Richard slowly nodded.

"No."

"I think someone built it through him."

And somewhere beyond Blackthorn Manor...

The true architect had just realized that Richard Carter was getting dangerously close to the truth.
