Chapter 5: The CEO Who Signed His Own Death Warrant

My Husband Ordered Two Hundred Strikes—Then He Learned Who My Father Really Was

Chapter 5: The CEO Who Signed His Own Death Warrant

A signature can build an empire.

It can transfer billions of dollars.

It can change the future of an entire corporation.

But sometimes...

One careless signature becomes a death warrant.

Nathan Ashford had signed thousands of documents during his career.

Contracts.

Acquisitions.

Loans.

International shipping agreements.

He had never imagined that one of those signatures had quietly condemned him long before he ever raised a whip against his wife.

The federal interrogation room felt colder than before.

Nathan sat with his hands folded on the steel table, staring at the untouched cup of coffee in front of him.

For the first time in fifteen years, there were no assistants reminding him of meetings.

No board members asking for decisions.

No ringing phones.

The silence was unbearable.

Agent Michael Grant entered with a thick leather binder.

"This came from your underground office."

Nathan looked up.

"I've already told you everything I know."

Grant remained calm.

"I don't think you have."

He opened the binder.

Inside were hundreds of signed contracts.

Every one of them bore Nathan's unmistakable signature.

Across the city, at Carter International's Emergency Operations Center, Marcus Hale projected the same contracts onto a massive digital display.

Richard Carter, Evelyn, David Lin, and Agent Laura Bennett stood around the table.

Marcus highlighted one page.

"Most of these agreements appear routine."

"Shipping permits."

"Warehouse leases."

"Insurance renewals."

He paused.

"But every twentieth contract contains a hidden authorization."

Richard frowned.

"For what?"

Marcus enlarged a paragraph printed in nearly invisible gray ink.

"Executive Emergency Logistics Clause."

David adjusted his glasses.

"I've never seen this language before."

Marcus nodded.

"Because it wasn't meant to be seen."

The clause granted unrestricted access to Ashford Global's international shipping network during periods of "operational emergency."

It sounded harmless.

Until Marcus revealed what it actually did.

"Each signed clause transferred temporary control of selected shipping routes..."

He looked toward Richard.

"...to shell companies owned by the Phoenix Circle."

Silence filled the room.

Nathan hadn't simply been transporting illegal cargo.

He had unknowingly surrendered portions of his global logistics empire to an international criminal organization.

Richard folded his arms.

"Who drafted these contracts?"

Marcus clicked another file.

"The legal department."

David immediately shook his head.

"No."

"They didn't write this."

"Someone inserted the language after final review."

Laura looked thoughtful.

"Digital forgery?"

Marcus nodded.

"Highly sophisticated."

"Whoever did this had complete access to Ashford Global's internal document system."

Meanwhile, forensic accountants uncovered another disturbing discovery.

Every hidden clause had been approved during the same eighteen-month period.

The period after Celeste Monroe joined Ashford Global as Executive Strategy Consultant.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"It was never about consulting."

Richard answered quietly.

"She was infiltrating the company."

Back in federal custody, Nathan studied the documents one by one.

"I signed these."

Grant nodded.

"You did."

"I never read that clause."

"You still signed it."

Nathan leaned back, defeated.

"I trusted my legal team."

Grant's expression remained unreadable.

"And they trusted someone else."

Hours later, federal agents escorted Nathan to Ashford Global Headquarters.

Not as its CEO.

As a cooperating witness.

Television cameras lined the streets as his convoy arrived.

Employees watched in stunned silence as the man they had admired for years entered his own building surrounded by investigators.

The lobby that once echoed with applause now fell completely silent.

Nathan noticed something strange.

His portrait had already been removed from the entrance wall.

The emergency board meeting began immediately.

Only eight of the original twenty directors remained.

The others had resigned overnight.

Some had disappeared.

Others were already under investigation.

Nathan took his usual seat at the head of the table.

Before he could speak, Samuel Rhodes—the company's senior independent director—placed a legal notice before him.

"Your authority has been suspended."

Nathan stared at the document.

"You can't do this."

Samuel sighed.

"It has already been done."

David Lin entered moments later representing Carter International.

Nathan looked at him bitterly.

"So Carter wants my company."

David smiled politely.

"No."

"Mr. Carter has no interest in owning a broken empire."

He placed another folder on the table.

"We're here because your company helped finance organized crime."

The boardroom doors opened once again.

This time, it wasn't investigators who entered.

It was Ashford Global's Chief Internal Auditor.

Margaret Ellis.

Nathan looked relieved.

"Margaret."

"You'll explain."

She met his eyes sadly.

"I already have."

She handed him a report nearly five hundred pages long.

"I've been documenting financial irregularities for three years."

Nathan stared in disbelief.

"You never brought this to me."

"I tried."

"You canceled every meeting."

She paused.

"Celeste said you were too busy."

Nathan slowly lowered his head.

Every warning had reached him.

He had simply ignored them.

Anyone who questioned Celeste had been dismissed.

Transferred.

Or quietly pressured into resigning.

He had believed loyalty meant agreement.

Now he understood the difference.

Suddenly, Marcus received an urgent encrypted message.

His expression hardened.

Richard noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Marcus projected satellite images onto the conference room screen.

Six Ashford Global cargo ships had simultaneously changed course in international waters.

Without authorization.

Without contacting headquarters.

Laura whispered,

"They're running."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"They're following emergency instructions."

Richard looked at the timestamp.

"When were those instructions issued?"

Marcus enlarged the file.

Three years earlier.

Authorized by Nathan Ashford.

Digitally signed.

Nathan stared at the screen.

"I've never seen that order."

Marcus answered quietly.

"You signed it."

Nathan's face went pale.

David examined the authorization carefully.

"It's genuine."

Nathan whispered,

"I don't remember."

Richard finally understood.

"You weren't meant to."

Marcus connected the evidence.

Each hidden clause.

Each forged contract.

Each automatic shipping order.

Everything pointed toward a single conclusion.

The Phoenix Circle had never needed Nathan's intelligence.

Only his signature.

His reputation had opened every door.

His authority had legalized every shipment.

His arrogance had prevented him from asking questions.

He had become the perfect front man.

Agent Grant's phone rang.

He answered, listened silently, then looked toward Richard.

"We've identified Victor Laurent's location."

Everyone turned.

"Where?"

Grant replied,

"Not overseas."

"He's been in New York the entire time."

Marcus frowned.

"Impossible."

Grant slid a surveillance photograph across the table.

Victor Laurent.

Gray-haired.

Elegant.

Walking out of Ashford Global Headquarters...

Only four days earlier.

Nathan stared at the image.

"I've never met him."

Evelyn looked carefully at the photograph.

Then something caught her attention.

The man beside Victor.

Only part of his face was visible.

But she recognized the distinctive sapphire cufflinks.

Her heart stopped.

"No..."

Richard noticed her expression.

"What is it?"

Evelyn's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I know him."

"Who?"

She looked directly at her father.

"He attended our wedding."

"He gave the toast."

Silence filled the boardroom.

Richard frowned.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"It wasn't a family friend."

"It was..."

She swallowed hard.

"...your oldest business partner."

Richard's expression changed instantly.

One name surfaced in his mind.

A man he had trusted for over thirty years.

A man who knew every Carter secret.

A man who had helped build his empire from the beginning.

If Evelyn was right...

Then the enemy standing behind Nathan Ashford...

May you like

Had been standing beside Richard Carter all along.
